Cavs of Mars

Now available in advance PDF from DriveThruRPG: A Festival of Blades: A Cavaliers of Mars Jumpstart

Return now to dying Mars in its last age of glory. A planet of flashing swords and choking sands, of winking courtesans and lantern-lit canal cities. Mars, where fortune and death are two sides of the same obsidian chit, where lost cities and dry oceans stretch between the last bastions of civilization. Where the First Martians, the monument-builders, are but a haunted memory. Where the Red Martians become decadent and reckless in their last days. Where the Pale Martians rule the wastes, remembering a history whose weight would crush a lesser people.

In this adventure, you’ll find yourself in Vance at festival time. When revolutionaries strike a visiting prince, you’ll need to explore the city’s dark underbelly, before racing across its towered tombs!

Live, fight, and love on Mars, a world of red death and strange mystery, a world of savagery and romance.

A complete adventure set in one of dying Mars’ greatest remaining cities. The innovative DEIMOS rules, for high-flying, swashbuckling adventure. Four pre-generated player characters, ready to get ...READ MORE

Jumping to Mars [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting, News

Cavs of Mars

We’re back from our various vacation moments, which were much-needed and awesome, and while the mega-excitement of Grande Masquerade 2016 in New Orleans over the Labor Day weekend is building, the business of Onyx Path is to get caught up on all the items coming out of this last month.

One of these is the Cavaliers of Mars Jumpstart, which Rollickin’ Rose Bailey pulled together with Mirthful Mike these last few weeks, and which will be available on this Wednesday as an Advance PDF.

But Rich, I think I hear you ask although really my ears could be playing tricks on me, what IS a Jumpstart anyway?

It’s a booklet designed to enable you to get started quickly playing an abbreviated version of the game. We would have called it a “Quickstart” a few years ago, but that term has become loaded up with some expectations based on the previous years of making them that kind of force these Jumpstarts to be put together a certain way that doesn’t work for all game lines.

We need to be able to allow each line to ...59 COMMENTS

And That Was the Gen Con That Was. [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting, News

Yep, that’s our booth, with both Mikes, Mirthful and Hollywood, wearing the Onyx Path colors and ready to rumble.

Er, uh, I mean: ready to chat about your favorite Onyx Path games!

Hard to believe that just last week we were all just getting back from Gen Con 2016. After all the months of hard work and planning, we dove into Gen Con and emerged on the other side happy, exhausted, and energized about all the good feedback we got from our community, creative contributors, and prospective creative contributors and business partners.

The crowds come pouring in on Day One!

Matt McElroy secretly counts how many books we have left to sell…

As you might be able to see in the pics above, we were experimenting this year with having our booth major in demoing and other friendly introductions to our worlds and Onyx Path in general, with a minor in selling books. Our minor, we got an A in, as we sold out of pretty much everything by Saturday. If we had been majoring in sales, I would have been concerned that we ...58 COMMENTS

Sheer Perfection [Signs of Sorcery] [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

Awakening 2 Slider

Welcome back, faithful readers!

Mage‘s errata is being incorporated, and the second edition core will soon be off to have an Index added. In the meantime, now that we have a stable ruleset, I think it’s high time to get back to Signs of Sorcery.

Our topic tonight is the Perfected Metals, one of the lesser-known pieces of Awakening lore. They showed up in a spell (“Forge Thaumium”) in the 1st ed core, and of course in the names of some of the Watchtowers, but it wasn’t until Legacies: The Ancient that they were explained. Essentially, the seven classical metals of gold, mercury, silver, tin, copper, lead, and iron had Perfected, magical forms . Gold, for example, became orichalcum, which when alloyed with lunargent (silver) and hermium (mercury) in a spell became Thaumium. Legacies: The Ancient gave a few lines of notes about what those metals did when not alloyed together, and launched a dozen fan theories and rules expansions in the process.

When Signs of Sorcery was but a glint in a Developer’s eye, I knew I wanted to finally take a look ...24 COMMENTS

Pugmire August Update!

I am back and (relatively) rested up from a wonderful and insanely busy Gen Con. Thanks so much to all the backers who stopped by to say hi! I had some good meetings at the show, and I announced some things as well. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s dive right in!

Still in very early stages, but we’re at the “discussing how to spend the budget wisely” stage of things. I’ve been chatting with some professional actors about providing voice work on Pugmire and/or other potential audio projects. Everyone I’ve talked to has been really excited so far, which is very heartening!

The magic chapter, enemies chapter, and introductory adventure are all redlined and back to the writers. I should be getting final drafts from them soon. Further, I’ve been heads-down in writing my own chunks of the book, and I’m pretty far along. In fact, here’s a snapshot of where things are at with the manuscript as a whole.

Credits Etc: 939 words Player’s Prologue: 753 words Introduction: 3,434 words Yosha’s Journal: 5,175 words Character Creation: 21,908 words Playing ...READ MORE

Storypath System Preview

Now available from DriveThruRPG: Onyx Path Publishing’s Storypath System Preview!

The evolution of the Storypath system is tied to our work on the Trinity Continuum, a world of hope, heroism, and peril, and Scion, a world where the children of the old gods walk the earth.

Early on, we found that both new editions of these games had similar system needs, because their characters are larger-than-life and fight in epic battles on a grand scale. We knew we needed a system that could accommodate everyday citizens on the street, superheroes soaring above skyscrapers, and gods of the sun and sky, but we also wanted rules to help facilitate the connection between the player-characters, their organizations (Allegiances for Trinity and Pantheons for Scion), and their values.

To move forward, however, we needed to take a step back, because the first editions of the Trinity Continuum and Scion used custom variants of the Storyteller System which powered Vampire: The Masquerade and other classic White Wolf games. Despite the differences between those variants, however, at its core the Storyteller System was designed chiefly as a horror ...18 COMMENTS

2016-2017 brochure

Afternoon, everyone! This popped up online a few days ago, but I haven’t had the opportunity to post about it here on the blog yet.

Our latest Onyx Path 2016/2017 Publishing Brochure is now available. Our focus is a bit different this time around, so you won’t see calendar of upcoming products in the back. Instead, that information’s sprinkled through the appropriate sections of the rest of the brochure.

Tomb Stalkers attack grave robbers near Chiaro

(Update: An earlier version of this post lacked the actual link. Oops, and fixed!)

Hi, folks! I ran demos of Cavaliers at Mars at our booth throughout Gen Con, and the Wrecking Crew did the same thing in our game room. We had a blast playing the game with folks, and I thought I’d share the short demo kit I was using in the booth.

The rules packet covers the core resolution system and the combat engine, trimmed down from the latest playtesting documents. The included characters show a range of careers and traits, but there are even more in the full game. And those come together in the scenario, an action scene where you can go blade-to-blade with the Princess Invincible herself.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think!
