Can’t make it to Gen Con this year? No problem! Onyx Path has got you taken care of.

Now available in PDF and Print via DriveThruRPG: Vampire Twentieth Anniversary Edition: The Dark Ages!

It’s 1242. The Mongol army crushed Baghdad, then Russia under its heel, then moved on to devastate Poland and Hungary. The Holy Roman Empire stood to war with the Papacy. The second Lombard League wielded the word of the Pope and fought off Frederick II.

The War of Princes rages. Patricide looms. Young powers look up the ladder to the next rungs, and see stagnation and hypocrisy. They see targets. When they look down, they see humanity. They see a power that could change everything. They see mortals organizing into universities and empires.

In the mortal world of 1242, power shifted at the rate an army marched. For the undead, power shifts faster than a fire overtakes a haven. To the Damned, power flows as fast as blood from an ancient heart.

Vampire Twentieth Anniversary Edition: The Dark Ages is a storytelling game of horrific power.

Featuring 13 clans and 19 bloodlines, this volume spans ...READ MORE

Onyx Paths, Stuffy Dolls, and Gen Con Indy. [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting, News

Shocking to see Magic: the Gathering card art in our header? That was pretty much the surprise I had the first time someone hunted me down asking if I’d sign one of the cards that I had done the art for. And then several years ago, I was surprised again that folks found me with Onyx Path and had stacks of cards to sign.

So this year, I’m going with it.

Anybody who has any of the Magic cards I illustrated, please come by the booth and I’d love to sign them. All of our booth team know to expect some Magic fans looking for me, so don’t be shy. Here’s two maps showing where Onyx Path booth #1103 is:

The thing is, for a lot of years with my freelance illustration work on Magic, and Doomtown, and Netrunner, and lots of other card games and even some RPG books outside of WW, most folks didn’t really connect that illustrator me with the me art directing for White Wolf.

But now, just like we’re doing the 20th Anniversary Editions of cWoD games, I myself am a classic ...82 COMMENTS

Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Seers of the Throne) [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

Seers Cover

Time for the Devil to get his due.

But first, some musical accompaniment.

Several years ago, when we were writing what is now Vampire: The Requiem Second Edition, I was taking a lot of notes about how I’d handle Mage in what was then still The Fallen World Chronicle. Rose’s decision to put VII at the front of Blood & Smoke along with the other covenants cemented something I’ve felt for years.

That is, that for all its other qualities the original corebook for Mage did not serve the Seers well.

The Seers of the Throne had a bumpy ride as antagonists, until eventually earning their place as probably Mage‘s primary source of opposition for player cabals. Some books, like Sanctum and Sigil, remembered to spend time on them, while others all-but ignored them. Depending on which book you read, the sixth Order may as well not have existed.

That changed – for the better – when the Seer book came out. Every Mage release since then has had Seer content in it. Maybe not much, but when we wrote the Chronicler’s Guide, Imperial Mysteries, or ...35 COMMENTS

Be a Good Dog. Protect Your Home. Be Loyal To Those Who Are True.

These are the words of the Code of Man. Dogs have inherited the world, building the kingdom of Pugmire thousands of years after the Ages of Man. These dogs have been changed to use tools and language, and they (along with other races of uplifted animals) seek to rediscover the world they’ve inherited. Some dogs use the leftover technology of humanity, but they believe it all to be magic handed to them by their dead gods. Others seek to create an ideal civilization, using a Code of Man compiled from ancient, fragmentary lore. The world is dangerous and mysterious, but courageous and loyal dogs will persevere.

Pugmire is a light-hearted and family-friendly fantasy world. It’s one of the first of Onyx Path Publishing’s creator-owned games, produced in a partnership with Eddy Webb and Pugsteady.

How You Can Enjoy Gen Con With Onyx Path [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting

Vertical banners 2015small

Last week, I looked at the historical precedent for why Gen Con is always a big deal for us at Onyx Path Publishing. This week, let’s look at this year and the different things we’re doing so that both the folks attending, and our larger community who aren’t going, can have fun with us next week.

Onyx Path will be at booth #1103!

We’ve been planning on our booth to be, like last year, a place where our community can come in, let us know what concerns you, and let us answer any questions we can. And part of what we’re pointing out this year is just how big our community is with devotees of the various game lines for the classic World of Darkness, and the new World of Darkness, and Exalted, and Scion, and Trinity, and Scarred Lands, and Cavaliers of Mars, and Pugmire. You can see in the pic above, two of our signs celebrating less than half of the settings we have created something for this last year/will create for next year. Phew!

So, we’ll all have plenty to talk about in ...55 COMMENTS

My Body Is A Cage (Silver Ladder) [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

Silver Ladder Cover

First, some Peter Gabriel.

The end is approaching. Not global Ascension, but of these Open Development posts – we have only two more of these posts to go. Game’s nearly out of Development and into Editing, the playtest groups are beavering away, and my Development “to-do” list now fits on one page.

What to say about the Silver Ladder?

The Silver Ladder are would-be Bodhisattvas, and all too often fall into becoming tyrants. They simultaneously define themselves by inequality – the Order is named after their precept that some humans are more enlightened than others – and devote the majority of their time to helping people find their most comfortable “rung” in that system. They created Mage society and do the most work in maintaining it still, all the while demanding that Wisdom bow to Gnosis. Their intentions are good. They see the potential in every human soul, but hate the world those souls inhabit. They hold that the ideal mage is a wise advisor, teaching by example, and often end up forcing their advice on other mages. They despise any restriction on their ...19 COMMENTS

Endless Wonder (Mysterium) [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

(Warehouse 13, property of SyFy)

Welcome back, faithful readers, to another in the pre-GenCon Order writeups. This time, we’re looking at the Mysterium.

If the Guardians, early in Mage‘s gameline, showed what the Orders could be like when expanded upon, the Mysterium were the first Order I really “got,” as I one of my players had a Mystagogue PC when the Order book came out and I lapped it up. I unashamedly love the Mysterium – the adventurer/archivist archetype appeals to me, and I’ve greatly enjoyed using Athenea in my games. They also, from the point of view of other Orders, make for excellent antagonists; my own work on books like Left Hand Path is indebted to the seeds sewn in that Mysterium Order book.

In second edition, the Mysterium are probably the least-changed Order, or tie for it with the Silver Ladder. They’re a dedicated mystery religion devoted to the worship of magic itself. They’e the librarians and curators of Athenea, treasure-troves of plot hooks and complications. They’re adventuring scholars, determined to seek out the strange, putting the Obsession with Mystery into Mage long before it had ...28 COMMENTS

[Demon]Storyteller’s Guide

Demon: The Descent

Still from The Matrix Reloaded (2003, dir. The Wachowskis)

Still from The Matrix Reloaded (2003, dir. The Wachowskis)

I haven’t talked about Demon for a while, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been on my mind.

Originally Rose was going to develop the Demon Storyteller’s Guide, but scheduling issues and so forth meant that it landed with me instead. She did the initial outlining, and I hired authors (including some folks who responded to the all-call we did a while back!), and got it all squared away. Today, I sent developed text to Michelle for editing and art notes to Mike for arting.

It does occur to me, though, that since I haven’t said much about this book (brain’s been deep in Beast for a while), you might like to see what’s in it. So, here’s the “How to Use This Book” section from the Introduction.

I want to give shout-outs to Rose Bailey, creator and co-developed of Demon, here. Also, Demon veterans Danielle Lauzon and Eric Zawadzki (author of the recently released Demon Translation Guide), new-to-Demon authors Maggie Carroll, Leath Sheales, Vera Vartanian, Andrew Atramor, and Amy Veeres, and new-to-Onyx-Path authors Stuart Martyn and Monica Speca.
