Fiction Friday: Tales of the Dark Eras

Chronicles of Darkness, Vampire: The Requiem

Tales from the Dark Eras contains stories from many of the eras covered in Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras. This week we look at Dry Spell, a story by Renee Ritchie set in Vampire: The Requiem’s late 16th century.

“For crimes against the state and the pacts of our safety and contaminating the masses upon whom we feed, Abbot Nathaniel Pendleton is hereby condemned to Final Death, to be carried out immediately. Court is adjourned.”

While not the most ideal words to hear upon returning to court, that utterance confrmed that I was, indeed, home, if nearly an hour late. The Ieldra’s voice flled the court chamber as only hers could: placid, but brimming with power, even when bored. The rustle of her heavy velvet skirts along the floor struck my ears more deeply than the Abbot’s shouted protests and the resulting scuffle.

Harald elbowed me brusquely, returning my attention to my more immediate surroundings instead of the presence of the Ieldra. The Haunt grinned at me, his teeth crisscrossing each other in a fght for dominance in his own mouth. “Oi, some fancy ...1 COMMENT

Revising Endowments [Hunter: The Vigil]

Open Development

Hunter: The Vigil logo

Fans who are already familiar with Hunter: The Vigil know that Endowments are special abilities given to hunters who are part of a conspiracy. In Hunter: The Vigil 2nd Edition, we have decided to rework Endowments to mesh better with 2E rules.

Today, I am linking to our first attempt to redesign Endowments. I want to stress that this draft, which is timestamped April 27, 2017, does not represent the final ruleset or a confirmed approach. I felt that this change was perfect to share via OpenDevelopment, and your feedback will make our design stronger. You can help by testing out the instructions to create an Endowment. What’s clear? What’s confusing? What’s extraneous or needs to be better defined? You can also help by playtesting the new Endowments to help us work out the bugs.

To illustrate the rule changes, we have provided examples of how Endowments are built using the new system in our proposal. I am offering one such example below, to show you the current direction we’re taking. ...15 COMMENTS

Now Available: Lore of the Bloodlines and our first Amazon fiction!

Beast: The Primordial, Chronicles of Darkness, Mage: The Ascension, Mummy: The Curse, Sales, Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Now available in PDF and print from DriveThruRPG: Lore of the Bloodlines, a companion volume to our earlier Lore of the Clans.

The Clans are not the only vampires that strut, if I might steal from the Bard, upon this great stage of fools. There are the errant Kindred inaccurately collected under the sobriquet of “bloodlines.” While their role in the eternal conflict between the childer of Caine is small, it is often incredibly impactful.

As such, I provide this corollary to my original study. It would be the work of several lifetimes to find and document every tiny aberration or fleeting dead end that constitutes a variation from one of the thirteen. Instead, I have focused on nine that I know for certain have an impact in our little culture war of the dead. From the brain-washed abominations of Tremere magic to vampires twisted by demonic will to the remnants of Clans long thought dead, each of these so-called “bloodlines” have their place in society. There is no larger picture for them — for us — to be a part of. Here on ...1 COMMENT

Dragon-Blooded Charms preview! [Exalted]

Exalted, Worlds

Hey y’all. Vance here, with a preview from our upcoming book Dragon-Blooded: What Fire Has Wrought. Keeping in mind that this isn’t final draft material and is still subject to significant change, let’s dive into our first preview for the Dragon-Blooded Charms.

Dragon-Blooded Charms are drawn from their Abilities, like the Solars, but in addition, each Charm resonates with the Essence of one or more of Creation’s five elements: Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and Wood.

Deep-Listening Palm

Cost: 5m; Mins: Awareness 2, Essence 1; Type: Simple

Keywords: Earth

Duration: One scene

Prerequisite Charms: None

Touching a surface or barrier made out of earthen or wooden materials, the Dragon-Blooded displaces her sense of hearing into the Essence of earth. She can listen through that barrier as though it were not there. Metal or similarly durable materials may require a (Perception + Awareness) roll of difficulty 3+ to hear through. On a failed roll, the Exalt is only able to hear fragments of conversation or certain noises determined by the Storyteller with this Charm for the rest of the scene. She cannot listen through barriers made of the magical ...8 COMMENTS

Samedi for V20 Lore of the Bloodlines by Mark Kelly

Something about the Samedi illo by Marvelous Mark Kelly just works to encompass the overall feeling coming out of today’s meetings. Lots and lots of stuff was discussed, all being pushed, prodded, and pulled forward with a ton of energy.

Some highlights (basically the ones I can talk about):

1- Our Extended Media team “Amazon Explorers”, Bill Bridges and Valerie Tate, has completed the first wave of six fiction books into ebooks for sale on Amazon! That’s V20 Endless Ages, W20 Rites of Renown, M20 Truth Beyond Paradox, Curse of the Blue Nile (Mummy), The Primordial Feast (Beast), and the God-Machine Anthology (CofD).

We don’t know when Amazon will put the books live, but we’re hoping to give out links on Wednesday with our weekly sales posts. This is our first foray into that jungle, so it’ll be really interesting to see what happens!

Congrats to both Bill and Val for pulling the project forward and if it works, expect Wave 2 in about a month or so!

This is not the only Extended Media ...25 COMMENTS

Fiction Friday: The Beast Within Revised

Vampire: The Masquerade

Today we go a little further back. The Beast Within Revised dates back to December 2000, but Onyx Path recently recreated it for ebook formats. This story is Gherbod Fleming’s The Inquiry.

[From the interview of Archon Theo Bell, Clan Brujah, on 14 November 1999, conducted by Justicar Mme. Guil, Clan Toreador.]

MG: And so, in your estimation, Archon Bell, at the point at which you lured Prince Vitel to the warehouse, he remained unaware of your harmful intent toward him?

TB: Do you think he’d have got in that car if he’d thought I was gonna blow his [expletive deleted] head off?

MG: I’m interested in your opinion, Archon. [pause; rattling of cellophane] I’d prefer that you didn’t smoke in here.

TB: [barely audible muttering.]

MG: Excuse me, Archon?

TB: Yes. In my estimation, he remained unaware. Hell, we spent weeks briefing him and the others, telling them that the Sabbat could bust through any night. Which was true. And the scenario we constructed for Vitel was credible. When they did attack a week later, they came along the same routes I told him they were using that night.

24 Hour Warning for the Prince’s Gambit Kickstarter

Press Releases, Vampire: The Masquerade

24 hours remain on the Prince’s Gambit Kickstarter for a Vampire: The Masquerade card game!

Prince’s Gambit is a casual card game where each player is a vampire called to the court of the vampiric Prince of the city. Players must cooperate to gain the favor of the Prince while deducing who among them are secretly the traitorous Sabbat infiltrators.

Designed by long-time Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop RPG developer Justin Achilli, Prince’s Gambit is a fast-paced social deduction game set within the world of Vampire, but which requires no special knowledge to play. Neophytes and experienced fans of Vampire both can jump right in.

Prince’s Gambit is our first card game: hopefully, the first of many.  As of this writing, we’re at 563% of our goal, with nearly 1350 backers, and we’ve passed seven stretch goals!

Prince’s Gambit & Its Final Nights (on Kickstarter) [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting, News

Autarkis Grudge from Prince’s Gambit by Michael Gaydos

Yes, we’re getting all crazy here at the end (or at least the end on Thursday) of the Prince’s Gambit casual card game Kickstarter, and we’re thrilled with how well it has gone so far! As I mentioned at the start, this is a very different kind of KS if only because it is a card game, and we’ve never done one of them on KS before!

So seeing how this KS compares and contrasts to our Deluxe KSs has been fascinating and we haven’t yet seen the end. The price point being so much lower ($19 plus shipping for the deck), shipping being estimated until we add it after the KS in BackerKit, it not being like VtES or other familiar cards games from the original WW days; all of these and more have provided interesting responses and data that we know we’ll be able to use in the future.

The Kickstarter is over on Thursday- so pop in if you can – it’s a really fun game and you can even watch ...67 COMMENTS
