Supporting Cast [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

Mage: The Awakening Rulebook

We all need mirrors.

The Awakened are strange, maddening people to be around. Imagine the most insular subculture you’ve ever come across, where the members have their own bizarre rituals, jargon, and shared references, then multiply it by a thousand. Then curse almost everyone else to be driven mad by exposure to that subculture even as they inevitably forget it. It’s little wonder that mages have few friends, but cling tightly to those they do; they’re still people, no matter their differences, and feel the same need for human companionship as anyone else. Who’d be a mage’s husband, wife, daughter, son, sibling, servant, boss, co-worker, lover? What sort of people walk in the Awakened world without signing the Watchtower themselves? What does their relationship to mages do to them?

Just as Requiem second edition gave an Appendix about ghouls, and Forsaken second edition enshrined the role of Wolf-blooded in Packs, Awakening second edition depicts the Orders as employing a multitude of Sleepwalkers, minor magical talents, Proximi, subject-matter experts and entirely unknowing Sleepers. Mages are not alone in the World of Darkness, and ...16 COMMENTS

Changeling the Lost Second Edition: Fairest

Changeling: The Lost, Open Development, Projects, World of Darkness

The third in my series of rapid-fire teasing Seemings, The Fairest. By now, I hope you can see the general feel and format. We’ve already shared Darklings and Beasts; I have the others lined up, they’ll probably go out this coming week.

Here’s the draft.

The normal rules for my draft sharing apply. Here’s the thread for discussing the Fairest.

Lore of the Clans 24 Hour Warning

Lore of the Clans

So far, Lore of the Clans has reached $121,000, just shy of the 250% funded mark. It’s our highest-funded modern V20 Kickstarter so far!

See what all the fuss is about: Deluxe Lore of the Clans

Your pledges have given us eight stretch goals to date, including an Antitribu Appendix, a Caitiff Appendix, and we’re slowly building a supplementary Lore of the Bloodlines PDF, which thus far includes the Daughters of Cacophony, Gargoyles, and Kiasyd.

We’ve also passed 15 Achievements, which means every single backer gets 13 Ready-Made V20 Characters, with different sample themed coteries made with different arrangements of the characters.

We have lots more to do, so let’s not stop there!

Changeling the Lost Second Edition: Darklings

Changeling: The Lost, Open Development, Projects, World of Darkness

Keeping this update, this teaser, short and simple. Earlier this week, I showed you what a Beast looks like. Now, I want to show you what a Darkling feels like.

Here’s the first draft. Same rules as always apply.

Here’s the forum thread to talk about it.

Beast: The Primordial

Still from Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990, dir. Joe Dante)

(I apologize, I know it’s a terrible movie, but he actually uses the word “atavism” in a monologue.)

OK! So! I know I’ve been a little lax in Beast updates this week, and the reason for that is that another project I’m working on – not for Onyx Path, but for my own company, Growling Door Games – just went up for sale in PDF and I’ve been wrangling that. But I promise I’m not going to turn this into a commercial for Chill. We’re here to talk about Beast.

A Beast’s true self is a mythic monster armed with natural weapons and fearsome abilities, some of which bleed over into his human form as Atavisms. Atavisms are intrinsic. They are the Giant’s strength or the Raptor’s talons, and using them is as natural as breathing. Manifesting aspects of his Lair is just as instinctive. They are part of him, too, from the oppressive cold of a Makara’s underwater abode to the darkness of a Namtaru’s subterranean refuge. Unleashing them feels good. The Beast ...50 COMMENTS

Starting off the month was our annual April Fools product for the World of Darkness, Gothic Icons, which features a collection of statted-up characters from classic Gothic literature.

Since April 1 coincided with Wednesday, an actual release day this year, we also released the advance PDF for Mummy: The Curse’s Sothis Ascends, a sort of mini-Dark Eras for Mummy detailing what the world was like during each of the previous Sothic turns since the fall of Irem.

Now in Print

For the first time, Vampire: The Requiem’s Bloodlines: The Chosen is now available in print on demand, featuring bloodlines mentioned in the VTR 1e rulebook, and expanded upon based on fan submissions.

And of course, the all-new Werewolf: The Forsaken 2nd Edition, released as advance PDF last month, is now available in print.

We also saw the release of some new poster art:

Werewolf: The Forsaken

werewolf the forsaken 2

Werewolf: The Forsaken 2nd Edition is now available in print on DriveThruRPG!

The need to hunt burns in your heart and in your soul. To chase down prey with your blood pumping fire through your body. Yesterday you didn’t know what that felt like, but today you’re sitting in a room with the bodies of your family and you need to hunt.

You are a human, a wolf, a killer, a monster. The ultimate predator.

You must hold the balance between the moon and the wolf. Between the flesh and the spirit. Between the pack and the prey. Your blood rises. The wolf must hunt.

What are you going to do?

You are a hunter now, one of the Uratha who inherit the blessings of Moon and Wolf. You conduct your sacred hunts in the shadows of the ordinary world, trying to maintain the boundaries. Driven by the need to hunt, you must keep the forces that would sway you in harmony rather than giving in to your instincts.

But the hunt isn’t easy. Your werewolves think they can hunt any prey, but they now face ...5 COMMENTS

The Creative Arts [Mage: The Awakening]

Mage: The Awakening, Open Development

Mage: The Awakening Rulebook

Welcome back, faithful readers! Mage: The Awakening Second Edition has spent the last four months being redlined with a fine-toothed comb, and is now back with the authors for a spruce-up before evolving into its final form. As second drafts come back in, I’ll be sharing the topics we didn’t get around to in the last phase of Open Development, such as Attainments (and I might split that up), the remaining five Order write-ups, Gnosis, matters of the Soul, and Mana.

Now, the previous blogs have described a lot of how we’re changing Mage, but today’s topic is something that we’ve gone into the new edition not only wanting to keep, but raise in prominence. Awakening, like its big brother Ascension and both games’ estranged uncle Ars Magica, is different to all the other World of Darkness games in how it treats characters’ powers. A Mage character sheet doesn’t list individual powers like Werewolf Gifts or Demon Exploits. Its powers aren’t progressive lists like Vampire Disciplines. The Arcana list many example spells, but they are examples. The game’s big draw, like ...50 COMMENTS

Changeling the Lost Second Edition: Kiths

Changeling: The Lost, Open Development, Projects, World of Darkness

I just posted the first Seeming, Beasts a few days ago. I’ve had a lot of people asking about Kiths, because of their relationship.

So I wanted to share the first draft of the Kith explanation, and a number of example Kiths. The whole book will have about 100. This is about a third of those.

Note: This is a first draft. Excuse references to The God-Machine Chronicle and Blood & Smoke; those things will be included in the Changeling the Lost Second Edition core rulebook. These are internal references, so I can make sure to include them in the final draft copy.

Here’s the draft copy.

I have a few rules for open development stuff. Here goes:

First off, notes need to be in one place. I’ve set up a forum thread for that. I’ll pay attention to that thread. This will be a new thread from last time, to help me organise. Don’t bother commenting on grammar, spelling, and punctuation. These are super raw drafts. Please don’t reiterate points. I’m not looking for consensus or “votes”. If someone said, “this issue exists”, don’t second it. I ...16 COMMENTS

We Started Like You. [Monday Meeting Notes]

Monday Meeting

One of the things we talked about today during the Monday Meetings was something brought up in discussing last week’s MMN blog and also in Eddy’s AMA last week, IIRC. That is, how do folks get their work noticed and published and become part of these RPG writing teams? Basically, how do you go from fan to game creator?

And when I say fan, I’m using it in the same way that I’d use it for myself, not as something with the negative “fanatic” connotations Justin Achilli so despises. I am a fan of Justified, Game of Thrones (both book and HBO versions), and Sherlock, in the sense that I enjoy watching/reading them and then looking further into how they are made, or into other folks’ analyses of the material. I might buy material connected to those worlds, or download their opening credits (that’s actually true) so I can replay them because they’re so cool and they remind me of the original thing I enjoyed.

I was a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and Michael Moorcock, and so when I began playing D&D back before ...67 COMMENTS
