At Long Last, Continuum! [Monday Meeting Notes]

The Trinity Continuum, that is.

This is a big, big, thing for us here at Onyx Path.

You see, back in the dim mists of time, we at the original White Wolf set out to create a new universe besides the World of Darkness. Some of us wanted to explore different genres, and already we sensed that WoD had gelled so that there were certain themes that were seen as not working for those game lines. Same thing with other genres.

Now that thinking may have been right or wrong, but we did in fact create Aeon, and as we were young madmen, we decided that not only would this new universe be a setting for science fiction gaming, we were going to set it up so that we’d have a super-hero game, and what the hell, a pulp-genre game as well. We’d start in the future and work our way back through a connected timeline, and so it had an overarching story that we would tell…backwards!

I mean, we were nothing if not ambitious and exploding with creative ideas.

For me, as head of Production and Design, I had my first chance to help create from scratch a world that required reference materials, and so Aeon had our first “art bible”, with concept art and special fonts, and everything. That was both cool in terms of all the creative effort, teamwork between departments, and thinking that happened before we even went to layout, and it would pay off later on with Exalted and other projects.

Remember, with WoD being modern day, we pretty much only ever needed to describe it visually as “our world, but darker”. And Street Fighter had it’s own visuals that we just used. (Thought I’d forgotten old SF, didn’t you?)

On creative terms, it was pretty sweet.

On sales terms, we may have over-reached a tad. Because we wanted the series to stand out, and we knew that the super-hero and pulp game lines would make sense to do at comic-book and pulp magazine sizes, we made Aeon at 7″ x 10″ instead of our usual 8.5″ x 11″. We created our first really Deluxe cover with a plastic wrap-around binder and plastic spiral binding.

We confused the hell out of the marketplace.

Retailers told us they didn’t know how or just couldn’t shelve the books because of the “odd” size. Customers thought the binding wasn’t going to hold up (all of my tests and all of my books to this day have not lost a single page, but YMMV). And despite advertising the game more than we ever had before, we still had many confused WoD players expecting this to be “Vampires in Space”.

But before all that, as the books were in the warehouse and some had already been shipped, we had to change the name of the game. A muuuuuch bigger company outside of tabletop gaming felt we were using their trademarked title. We had no choice. Stickers were created and applied as fast as we could do it.

So Trinity, as the first game was now named, got hit from a bunch of different directions and had a bit of a tough time of it. Still, it had a pretty great publishing run, and both the super-hero game, Aberrant, and the pulp game, Adventure!, did come out.

And have kind of become minor classics since then.

I told you all that to tell you this: personally, I never thought that the Trinity Universe, as the three game lines and their whole storyline and setting were known eventually, got a fair chance out there on the shelves. Some of that was us at the original WW misreading the audience and the market, and some were situations outside our control. My feeling then and now was that the whole thing positively glowed with potential.

Thus, when I got the chance to buy the IP, I did. Thinking to myself that one of the first things we needed to do was to spread out beyond the original trilogy of game lines, and while still keeping them as important eras, start to see the “universe” more as a “continuum”. More like a series of eras that both exist along a timeline and spin off their own futures. A multiverse, if you will.

That way, as Impish Ian Watson pointed out when we discussed this, a bunch of years ago, the direction of your home TC: Aberrant game doesn’t have to be bound to the future presented in TC: Aeon. The Trinity Continuum allows for, and is designed for, a rationale for why your home game is what it is and may or may not feed into any other eras we choose to create books for.

This also means that your characters’ decisions and actions all have meaning in the big picture sense, because your future is yours to make.

We also decided to go the Core Rulebook+Setting Core route, partially because it gave us a chance to start the Continuum with a modern-day setting, but also because, to my way of thinking, having the Core Rulebook as the “ground-zero” of the Trinity Continuum series allows you, our community, a chance to take those core Storypath rules and look at how they were extrapolated for TC: Aeon and use that as a model for any eras you may want to play in. Then, who knows, maybe we open up the Community Content site for the Trinity Continuum, and you can publish your era, too!

Even within a single setting like the Trinity Continuum, we still have:

Many Worlds, One Path!

Is a life of running and hiding a life worth living? We say yes. There’s always something between the running and the hiding, and those moments of grace make it all worthwhile.

The Huntsmen Chronicle Anthology is a perfect companion piece to Changeling: The Lost, 2nd Edition. These stories spin tales of the Lost, of those abducted and enslaved by fairies. Those who escaped, but whose captors will stop at nothing to find them. These fairies summon forth the Huntsmen, primordial hunters who understand nothing but pursuit and capture. The Huntsmen are unstoppable monsters, and the Lost can only look to each other for respite, rare comfort, and rarer trust.

The Hedge has parted and you can get the PDF/electronic versions and the physical book PoD version of The Huntsmen Chronicle Fiction Anthology for Changeling: The Lost 2nd Edition at DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/210042/The-Huntsmen-Chronicle-Anthology

At last, one of the most legendary of Kindred will share his personal journal with you! V20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary goes on sale in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225322/V20-Becketts-Jyhad-Diary

It’s ever been a loaded word among vampires. Jyhad is in force everywhere from lofty, perfumed Elysium to cloying, smoke-filled blood feasts. Jyhad’s the eternal game played by elders, Methuselahs, and worse — it’s the agenda of beings so utterly beyond humanity, one such as yourself could scarcely understand its movements.

Luckily for you, you’ve picked up a copy of my diary. With my help you may just take a step on the first rung of understanding. Information worth having is information you must earn through blood, and oh, how I’ve bled for what’s contained within these pages.

— Beckett

Beckett’s Jyhad Diary serves as the definitive book of setting and plot for Vampire: The Masquerade, containing 30 chapters spanning different geographical regions, encountering vampires of every clan, profiling obscure and profound segments of the mythology, and providing countless story hooks on every page.

Masterfully written by the likes of Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vaan, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins, Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is as fascinating to read as to use for your game Chronicles.

With a howl of RAGE, the W20 Changing Ways Advance PDF charges at you this Wednesday on DTRPG.com!

Changing Ways is an in-depth look at what it means to be a werewolf, both on a personal level and as part of a pack. It digs deep into what it feels like to have bones re-knit after breaking, the range of senses available across all forms, and the sudden heady rush of the Gifts and Rites bestowed by spirits. It also provides a look at what life is like for lupus and metis werewolves, characters who have had experiences alien to any person. It shows the many ways that werewolves organize in packs, and how those packs are designed as groups of warriors, rather than aligned to the behavior of wolves.

Changing Ways contains:

• A detailed look at what it means to grow up as a lupus or metis werewolf, and how that colors a character’s perspective.

• More information on what it feels like to be a werewolf, a creature that changes in both body and mind.

• Frameworks and organizations for packs, along with new tactics and systems for forging the pack as part of play.

A Land Where Legends Walk

Drawing enthusiastically on Greek mythology, the revised and re-imagined Scarred Lands nonetheless retains its place as a modern fantasy RPG setting. This is a world shaped by gods and monsters, and only the greatest of heroes can expect to be counted among them. The most populous continent of Scarn, Ghelspad, plays host to vast unexplored regions, hides unsolved riddles from ancient cultures, and taunts adventures with the promise of undiscovered riches hidden among the ruins of older civilizations.

Yet the myths of the Scarred Lands are relatively recent events. The effects of the Titanswar still ripple through the world, and the heroines and villains of many of these stories are part of living memory, if not still living.

The Award-Winning Fantasy Setting Returns

Scarred Lands has been a favorite fantasy setting since the release of the Creature Collection for the d20 System in 2000. In subsequent years, over 40 titles were published for Scarred Lands, making it one of the most fully supported fantasy RPG settings ever and the premiere product line of Sword & Sorcery Studios.

Available in both 5th Edition and Pathfinder compatible versions! PDF and PoD formats available NOW!

I can also vouch for the spiral bound Aeon/Trinity books, as mine has also held up exceedingly well.

    So psyched for the Kickstarter!

Same here on the spiral Trinity book. It has survived a lot of unintentional abuse due to moves, a book shelf collapse, and being thrown around the car in a car crash, and it still has all its pages.

Same here, the spiral bound books have held up very well – I’ve got 3 or 4 of them and they’re all still pretty much in mint condition even with regular use – quite remarkable really. The hardback one with the day-glow orange inside covers has faired much worse – mostly the spine giving up the ghost.

        Yep, my point exactly.

My spiral bound Aeon book (I got one of the originals before the name change) has held up very well. The plastic cover has broken at the seam points, but the rest of the book is still in fantastic shape.

All the way down, like it’s in pieces, or breaking open at the edges? Just for my own curiosity.

Just the folding edges that makeup the clasp part. Specifically the flap that you have to fold every time you open the book. That crease gave out about a year ago. The creases at the spines are fine. We played with that book a lot while I was still in high school though and I wasn’t the most delicate with my books back in those days.

Aberrant was the first White Wolf game I ever played or heard of, and it was the first tabletop game I ever ran. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow’s Trinity/Aeon kickstarter to say the least.

To be clear, we’ll get to Aberrant if things go well with this KS, but aren’t featuring it in this KS itself.

When Rich approached me about doing the new Trinity, it was really gratifying to learn how much we were on the same page. A lot of what he wanted to do with it were things I wanted to do, but had come to those same conclusions independently. I’ve felt very much like Rich is letting me run wild an unrestrained, specifically because we have the same general direction in mind. 🙂

I think one of the problems with the marketing of Aeon (Trinity) first time round was that White Wolf spent the previous year or so promoting another sci-fi game online, before scrapping it and launching Aeon instead. I remember being quite confused over what it was (basically a heroic action scifi game).

I’m still curious about how the final physical product will look and feel this time round. Depending on that, I’ll decide the level I end up backing it. I like the system developments and extension to the continuum timeline for settings. So I guess I’ll see you there at the kickstarter.

    1. CHILL Avatar

Yep, that was ‘Exile’, and it has some strange little marketing promotional materials / pamphlets as I recall. I’ve still got the text of the 1st and the 2nd draft documents, combat worksheet and character sheet buried away in my cloud drive. Was an interesting read.

If memory serves one draft had a note in it about a plan for a spiral bound version of the Exile book, bound on the short side with the logo or a holographic sticker on it or something.

      1. richt Avatar
        richt

I don’t recall that, but I know we were looking at ways to reconfigure the physical aspects our game books that started during brainstorming for Exile.

        1. CHILL Avatar
          CHILL

Here we go, found the reference. Its the very first paragraph of text in the file “Exile Second Draft”, its absent from the 1st draft document. It says: *** Cover: Imagine a 7 X 10 spiral bound book book (bound on the short side) with a black plastic cover. Imprinted on it (or perhaps a holographic sticker attached to it) it the exile petroglyph and the word: EXILE ***

          1. richt Avatar
            richt

It’s cool, I believed you. We killed the “short side” binding after talking with printers, who had enough trouble figuring out how to make it.

      Wouldn’t be Aeon without ’em.

Yes, and you’ll be able to read all about it as sections are unlocked during the Kickstarter for backers.

This is what I have been waiting for.
Bought the ‘deluxe’ book a beat before the legal issue.(?)
Spiral and cover are still good. Pages are only worn from use.

    Is there another case/spiral edition?

We discussed it but really want the new Trinity Continuum books to be very accessible to new gamers, so we’re going with a really nice hardcover. Still kept the 7″ x 10″ size though as the market is a lot more open to that size now.

Long time lurker, first time poster, here.

I always loved (and still love) the World of Darkness, but my love for Trinity is unconditional and unlimited. In those stone age days before the internet, Trinity felt like the game that only my friends and I had heard of, and that we were in some special secret club for only the coolest of dorks. Hell, as a camp counselor it was the game I used to teach a bunch of kids about RPGs. Can’t wait to chip in on the Kickstarter.

Thanks Rich, Ian and co. for giving this setting the spotlight it deserves after all these years!

Wow! So glad you were able to get new folks into tabletop gaming that way! We’re really thrilled to be able to reboot all the games, and I think you will like what’s there.

I’ll be there tomorrow for the Kickstarter! Better shovel that snow, Ian! Also, my spiral core book has all its pages. The Continuum proves you right, Rich!

I’m sure this going to do well, and we’ll be talking Aberrant next year.

When things do get around to Aberrant, can we avoid a repeat of Blackwelder’s essay on how Aberrant is not a superhero game? While I get his (highly semantic) point, it confused the heck out of the marketplace.

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

It’s a superhero game. In fact, what I’m looking at for Aberrant is to expand on the superhero genre options more like in Trinity Continuum: Aeon, so that the cult of personality Novas are still a huge part of it all, but there are also areas where other sorts of superhero gameplay and themes are explored.

Oh! Didnt know this was your baby.

Hmm…. you are giving me second thoughts. To be 100% honest I was thinking to skip this one. No judgement on the game itself, I just don’t know anything about it. And, you know, money. But now I am thinking about it.

How about this internet. Why don’t you settle it and convince me I should jump in? What is the single thing you love most about the game?

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

Well, you have a whole month of being able to see what it’s all about via the KS, and backers will be getting updates containing the text from the two books. If after that you’re not into it, no worries!

Hey Rich. I wanted to say that I’ve been really excited about the Aeon Kickstarter. A few friends (who I have played a ton of Aeonverse games with over the years). I was also really interested in backing, and I went to check out the stretch goals and found myself really disappointed. Adding Aeon books to the PDF bundle seems like a really lackluster stretch goal. Especially considering that we have to pick up an add on for that material.

I understand that it is likely too late to change any announced or unannounced Stretch goals for the campaign. I just thought I would offer the feedback and how it is effecting my motivation to back the project.

    1. Hamid Avatar
      Hamid

Those aforementioned friends have already backed the project. I realized a distraction got in my way of completing that sentence.

    2. richt Avatar
      richt

We have three tracks of Stretch Goals that we’ll be bopping back and forth through as the KS goes through the next 29 days, and the PDF track is just one of the three. Sorry that one doesn’t work for you, but since that’s enough to stop you from backing you’ve probably made the right decision. We really want folks to have fun while backing our KSs, not get frustrated, and would rather anybody who isn’t into how we run them not pledge rather than be upset throughout the KS campIgn. The books will be out in PDF and PoD on DriveThru, and the traditionally printed books will be available with IPR and Studio2 and in game stores after we get them to our backers, so you can pick them up then and with no worries. Thanks, and please say thanks to your friends for us, too!

      1. Hamid Avatar
        Hamid

I saw that it was one of three tracks. I suppose what bothered me is that track takes up milestones that could be filled with things that feel like rewards and don’t take an additional add-on to my pledge. I am also coming from a place of owning all of the Aeonverse 1E material.

Just thought I would weigh in on how the reward structure impacted my decision to be a backer. I’ve backed several of the OP Kickstarters and had been looking forward to this one.

        1. richt Avatar
          richt

Well, actually, the PDF track doesn’t take away from the others. If we dropped it out, we would not change the other two tracks and it would take a lot longer to get through the Stretch Goals. We added it both to give more value to our PDF backers, and to provide a nice SG payoff more frequently, as we’ve seen folks get bored waiting for longer SGs to get achieved and tune out of discussions in the past.

If I may offer a different stance. Coming with no knowledge or books on the first edition (guess it never got to canada?) That same track has been my tipping point to finally decide to go all in and back this project. Having all those books for next to nothing a is a huge advantage to me. Core books are great, but often offer an incomplete vision. This allows me to read more untill new books come in.

Do not get me wrong, I understand and respect what you are saying. There is no wrong stance here. I am just using this fortuous instance to illustrate the point as to why these kickstarters are run this way.

Also, yeah, I gave in and pledged. Don’t judge, we all knew it was gonna happen. This setting sound nuts in a very good way.

Glad to see you mention Street Fighter. That to me has always been the game most unsuited to the Storytelling System, therefore it’s the one I’ve wanted to play. I’m curious, would it ever be feasible for Onyx Path to license Street Fighter to create a Storypath System game?

First off, big fan of Exalted, Scion and the World of Darkness; I’m happy to see some of them being continued.

I had a question regarding Scion 2e release, and I apologize if it’s been addressed before: Will the Origins and Hero books be released simultaneously or individually as they’re finished?

Normally, i’d let some of the staff answer this but it is late in the week and I worry the question might go unnoticed. Now, don’t blast down my door if I am wrong but if memory serves the plan was to release at the same time.

What I’m really looking forward to is Adventure and Aberrant (in that order). Back in the day I got into Adventure the most (I just like pulp) and Aberrant was really good as a (kinda) new take on superheroes. I was what, 16-18 years old back then, and still heavily read cape comics.
Never really got into Aeon. I got the German-translated version at a discount somewhere, and even had some of the mini-supllements, but the setting never really tickled my fancy. Now, almost double the age as back then, I’m have more interest in Aeon, just not as much as for the other two.
And looking at the Core, I’ll probably run a few one-shot Leverage-style games (I love heist-themed stuff) to get used to the new rules.
Gotta wait to the end of the month to see how much money will be left.
    Cheers from a German fan.

I’m so happy to see this Trinity kickstarter! I had the original “Aeon” book long ago, before idiots decided your thing was just like that other thing with all the freakishly long, skinny people. I loved that book for years, & when it was stolen from me, I legit cried. And while I picked up the rest of the books (nearly everything that got put out), I’ll never forget that original.

This, well, it brings me full circle. Here I am super emotional to see it come back, updated, & given love I always thought it deserved. Aberrant, to this day, is my favorite examination of the super hero genre, & it really kicked my love of it into overdrive.

Thank you for bringing this back to me. Thank you.

Is there any hope of the Deluxe Beckett’s Jyhad Diary being in backers hands by August? I’m using it to run a game at a convention and I’d really rather not have to shell out for a POD copy when I’ve got the Deluxe on the way
