Covering the Pulp Genre with TC: Adventure! [Monday Meeting Notes]

We’re just about three weeks into the Trinity Continuum: Adventure! Kickstarter, and we’ve hit the legendary Sargasso Sea of Lost Ships time period where the KS pledges start to drip in.

We find this “slow time” with all of our KS’s, pretty much, and many of our friends in other companies report the same thing, so it’s not unusual – but we’d still like to get the word out.

This is a great time for folks out there to join us in pushing the KS to friends, family, random strangers – whatever gets more eyes on the KS page!

Our TC: Adventure! team have continued to sit in on interviews and other media – doing their part to spread the word – and you can find those links down below in the Media section.

Meanwhile, we do keep achieving Stretch Goals and building the companion books, just a bit more slowly at this period!

V5 Trail of Ash and Bone art by Ken Meyer. Jr.

In keeping with the theme of the last several weeks of covering the pulp roots of adventure, I’m thinking a little show and tell of the various pulp elements and the callbacks to first edition that I picked to include on the Trinity Continuum: Adventure! cover might be fun.

And fun is the name of the game when it comes to pulp!

We’ll start from the top down:

There are a couple of things going on here that are presented together: first, this is our cavalcade of villains. We based these on the baddies from first edition, who were heavily photo-manipulated members of our White Wolf staff during that time. So their photos were great source reference material for our 2e cover artist Shen Fei.

It has been said that the pulps were only as exciting as their villains. And we have some goodies. Uh, baddies. Well, you know what I mean.

Since Zorbo was always one of my favorites of all of them in terms of megalomaniac splendor, he gets the big “topper” position and we use his death balloons as a backdrop that includes an aerial dogfight. There was a whole sub-section of pulp that was primarily about aerial aces, but all of them had flying and fights in the skies as elements of their stories. Aviators were a big thing then, with the new developments in flight driven by the two world wars fascinating the regular folk who bought the pulps.

Amelia Earhart disappeared in 1937, and while Charles Lindbergh’s flying exploits were more in the decade before, in the early 30s the tragedy of his son’s kidnapping and murder kept America’s flying hero in everybody’s minds.

Below them, we have a veritable smorgasbord of pulp tropes, but most importantly they surround possibly the key character of the Trinity Continuum: Max Mercer in the classic ripped shirt punching pose that is clearly an homage to Doc Savage. Doc appeared on most of the pulps and all of the paperback covers in a shirt ripped by his exertions as a hero doing heroic things.

Besides punching what is clearly a “living skeleton” hard enough to knock its skull off, Max is in a jungle – a favorite pulp setting – that also seems to have some kind of albino great apes as inhabitants. Previously undiscovered varieties of animals was a huge thing in pulp adventure fiction, sometimes for good, but often as part of the inexplicable death plots of the villains.

Further, I wanted to include an early model car, as again, the development of the automobile and the gadgets a car could include were a big part of pulp, and why not include an adventurer using a super-science gizmo to zap some hoods that probably came out of that vehicle? Gangsters and criminals were also frequently the bad guys – usually as the disposable pawns of the master criminals.

Finally, still in just this one section of the cover, we have an ancient ruin – often a different civilization that we know from history books were in that area, a robot because SCIENCE!, and an adventurer that looks vaguely familiar being chased by a dinosaur. Whether in the Hollow-earth, or just isolated parts of the world, stories that contained dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures all jumbled up time-wise were a popular type of story. After all, if your hero had a tough fight with a bear, how much more exciting was one with a saber-tooth tiger or rampaging dinosaur?

And as a kid who loved dinosaurs beyond all reason, having them in the pulp stories just made them so much fun for me!

Here we are: the original Aeon Society from the 20s depicted posing in the classic photo I made and included as a historical relic for the first Aeon book – and reused over and over again in the first edition. Had to have them here, not just because of that first edition callback, but because their characters ran the gamut of pulp heroes: the weird scientist, the science-mystic, the crackshot, the disguise artist, the flying ace, the explorer, and their leader.

These folks were also portrayed by members of the White Wolf staff during the time that we were working on the first Aeon core book and they’ve lived in immortality ever since!

Below them, you see the Hammersmith Event explosion that was this era’s “empowering” moment. One of the three “tent-pole” events that make up the trinity that the setting could be said to be named after.

Finally, just like on the previous core books’ covers we have our new characters representing the player characters that could be made in the setting. They combine bit and pieces of options in the book, with maybe some tommy-gun shooting toughness, maybe something more mystical or hypnotic, and definitely some masked gadgeteering. Pretty close to the three types of heroes in the book, and pretty close to some classic pulp tropes.

Below them is the city. Any city from the 1930s, although there are a bunch of New York landmarks squooshed together along with other buildings going up. Always up. This was the time of skyscrapers and the building of towers. And above them, an autogyro, the forerunner of helicopters in my mind, and as good a symbol of that age as any – and different than a dirigible, which we did consider. Figured Zorbo’s death balloons got us close enough to them, and we’d be sure to have them in the interior art.

Anyway, that’s how I tried to pull in just about everything I love in the pulp fiction of the time and combine it all in a way that we hadn’t yet so that the various details add up to a feeling, an impression, that matches the fun and adventure that are specific to the pulp genre.

Meanwhile, Behind the Facade of That Innocent Looking Company:

Most of what we discussed today were options for the Onyx Path 2021 Online Con panels, as well as which projects would benefit from Actual Play sessions during the con. We’re trying to give those games that folks need to see being played some APs, and also those that just need publicity – like any that are going to have upcoming crowd-funding campaigns after the mid-June con date.

Because everybody has opinions and favorites, it’s one of those topics that benefit from us discussing and hashing out the choices of game lines. From the list we agreed on, we can look at each game listed and assign possible GMs, which will then be parsed with available times and available players. It’s spread-sheet heaven!

We’re doing a similar thing with the panels, and then the final piece will be all the non-AP games that will be played during the con time frame. There should be a lot more of those than the panels and APs, and many more of our game lines will be played in those games. So, we’re hoping every line gets a game or more that folks can sign up for, or watch something about if it’s a discussed during a panel or demo’d during an AP.

A new sale is up on DTRPG – this time it’s an Urban Fantasy-themed sale so you’ll be able to find PDFs on sale for Scion, Both Mage lines, and both Changeling lines. I hear there are also a lot of our community content sites’ projects included, as well!

Finally, we compared notes on a lot of meetings happening this week, starting off with a new set of Developer Town Hall virtual meetings tomorrow (Tuesday), with an earlier one to make it easier for our freelance creatives across the Atlantic, and a later one for folks west on the US East coast.

We never know what these chats are going to cover, as while our Monday Meeting crew will have a couple of topics to offer, we’re also there to answer questions or just engage in discussion with anyone attending who wants us to. This has been the pattern since we started these last year in order to bring our far-flung creators together in an official venue – and it really has seemed that folks appreciated it during all the weirdness and awfulness of 2020.

As always, I ask any of you who have questions or topics that you’d like me to mention to the devs, please do offer them up in the Comments section of this blog! I WILL bring them up to the crew. They have questions, the MM crew have questions, you all have questions – we’re all in this together, and it’s a chance to get answers and a discussion going pertaining to your favorites of our:

While not a art expert, nor having any kind of formation near art, I love the process of art creation, and those insights to your mind are always exciting. After all you are one of the most important minds that guided the art in RPG books for the last 30 years or so.
    Thank you, Rich!

Would it be possible for those who backed the Lunars KS to get a manuscript preview of Many Faced Strangers like the Dragon Blooded KS backers got for their companion book?

      A much more heroic character…punching a skeleton. 🙂

I’m sure this has been asked, and I apologize if I’m wasting your time by asking again.

Will Hunter: the Vigil 2e be at all compatible with the fifth edition Game lines? If not, I completely understand. I just have a bunch of players that keep asking me. LOL

    Thanks for your time.

H:tV 2e is a Chronicles of Darkness game line, and fifth edition game lines are World of Darkness. So on that basis, they are not designed to be in the same setting, nevermind compatible. That being said, cobbling something together that uses “stuff” from H:tV 2e in your V5 game is probably possible and could be fun if that’s how your table rolls.
