We reached out to Tale of the Visiting Flare author Jim Zub:

I love how Exalted pulls together so many different historical and mythical influences into such an intoxicating mix of fantasy and drama. Writing stories in the world of Exalted is such a joy because it’s such an evocative setting full of colorful characters.

In Tale of the Visiting Flare we focused on a powerful Solar Exalt rediscovering his legacy as the ‘Sword Priest’, a master swordsman who once blessed the magical weapons of the Chosen. Flare is a confused wanderer who carries within him the soul of a legendary hero and the contrast between them, the naive boy and the confident master, made for a nice platform explain to new players the core of Exalted – heroes of legend reborn in a new and frightening age.

Instead of trying to encompass all the different types of Exalts, the epic conflicts and factions, the varied locations and complex relationships, we distilled it down to this one character so someone could read it and get a feel for the kinds of stories they could create while playing Exalted. If we did our job right then experienced and new players can both get something out of it.

Here’s the original character description for Visiting Flare from the pitch document:

Appearance wise, Flare is in his early 20’s. He is lithe, strong, not very tall. His hair is both red and black. He has a defining scar around his neck as if he were beheaded, a scar in his left side as if he had been impaled with a spear, and a scar around the right shoulder as if his arm had once been hacked off. These wounds correspond to the death wounds of Eternal Nova. If his clothing reveals any of these parts of his anatomy the scars should be visible.
