Gaining the Prince’s Favor [Monday Meeting Notes]

Tomorrow! Tuesday, March 21st at 12 noon Eastern US time!

The Kickstarter for Prince’s Gambit goes live!

This is a description from the KS page:

Designed by long-timeย Vampire: the Masqueradeย tabletop RPG developer Justin Achilli,ย Princeโ€™s Gambitย is a fast-paced social deduction game set within the world ofย Vampire: the Masquerade, but which requires no special knowledge to play. Players must cooperate to gain the favor of the Prince while deducing who among them are secretly the traitorous Sabbat infiltrators.

And hereโ€™s a link to our Princeโ€™s Gambit Example of Play video, hosted by Justin Achilli himself, with a special guest appearance by our own Eddy Webb. Itโ€™s about 10 minutes long, but goes through the important set-up and highlights how a typical game plays:

I mentioned last week that this is a pretty big Kickstarter for us as it is for our first non-book sort of project. We’ve studied a lot of other card game Kickstarters and tried to adapt what seemed to work for them into the parameters of Prince’s Gambit.

It is also the first time we are structuring the pledges so that shipping amounts are added after the KS is over. We’re hoping this can enable much more accurate costs, particularly for our international backers. It’s only after having put together a handful of other KSs using BackerKit (as our platform for after a KS campaign is over) that I feel comfortable with handling shipping through the BackerKit interface.

The good news for anybody in our community that is interested in our other game lines, is that we’re very much looking at this first foray into card game Kickstarters as a massive learning experience for the whole team. We have every intent of applying what we learn doing this to further card game KSs in the future. That means pricing, pledges, what sort of Stretch Goals get folks excited, do the same press groups get interested, how fast (if at all) do we hit the funding amount, you name it!

Speaking of what gets folks excited, we’ll be holding an Ask Me (Us) Anything on Reddit next Wednesday the 29th starting around 12 noon EDT. Various developers and Onyx Path folks will be on throughout the day, and Justin Achilli will pop on in the evening after he gets done his day job to talk about Prince’s Gambit. So if you want all the inside info, that’s the place to go next week! I might even be on there answering important, secret, stuff if I can figure out the razzin-frazzin’ scrolling of the threads!

Following up from last week’s MMN blog, our friends at DriveThruRPG have resolved our clogged physical book Pod creation process and I’ve ordered PoD proofs of a half-dozen projects (see the project progress updates below in the BLURBS! section). Some of them are already on their way here to Onyx home base as I write this. Now, will any of them get here in time to go on sale this week? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Mighty Matt McElroy, our Operations Head-Honcho, just got back from the GAMA trade show in Vegas, and the word is that lots of folks want to talk with Onyx Path for all kinds of business deals!

Always nice to hear, and I’m really glad Matt got a chance to touch base with our friends from the new White Wolf Publishing, Jason and Dhaunae, and the guys from Indy Press Revolution (IPR) and Q-Workshop. We’ve really enjoyed working with them so far, and it sounds like big things are afoot for the future.

Meanwhile, Impish Ian Watson, lord of all things Trinity Continuum, hosted an Onyx Path Q&A at CAiNE in Canada that looked a bit quiet for a few worrisome minutes but then all the folks whose games had run late poured in and lots of great questioning and answering, too, ensued!

Just to recap a few questions from this last week:

#1 We don’t have any current plans to create LARP rules for Chronicles of Darkness because, a) we actually don’t have the LARP license, just tabletop RPG, and b) it is the new White Wolf‘s call on whether any other WW settings get LARP rules. If they decide they want to, and we can help, we’d be glad to.

#2 Yes, we do know how concerned you are about the Exalted 3rd release schedule, and we are too. As I noted late last year or early in January, we are working on a new plan for a couple of our lines, and a couple of specific books, and EX3 is at the top of the list for serious changes to how we’ve been doing things up until now. I also know that actions and delivery speak loader than words, and you will be seeing things actually happen in the next couple of weeks.

#3 Yes, we are still planning the Trinity Continuum Kickstarter for this year. We’re just cagey about which month.

#4 Is Dark Eras Companion‘s PDF ever going to go to backers, you ask? Sometime this week!

Hopefully, I’ll see a bunch of you tomorrow as the Prince’s Gambit KS goes live at 12 noon!

The Ordo Dracul. Each has its fierce devotees, its jealous rivals, and its relentless enemies. Now,for the first time, the covenants speak for themselves.
This book includes:
  • A variety of stories from each of the covenants, all told in their own words.
  • Never-before revealed secrets, like the fate of the Prince of New Orleans.
  • New blood sorcery, oaths, and other hidden powers of the covenants.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Fallen Blossoms (Hunter 1640-1660 Japan). Japan is moving into the Edo Period. New laws and new ways of thinking wash over the land, and with a new order come new threats to humanity. Take a look at the Vigil in a time where samurai transition from warlords to bureaucrats, Japan massively and lethally rejects outside influence, and when Edo rapidly grows into a world power.

Continuing our individual Dark Eras chapters, we offer you Dark Eras: Fallen Blossoms on in PDF and physical copy PoD versions on DTRPG! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/205483/Dark-Eras-Fallen-Blossoms-Hunter-the-Vigil

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Doubting Souls (Hunter 1690-1695 Salem). Immigrants and tribes struggled to co-exist on the Eastern Seaboard in the ever-expanding Colonies. Violent clashes, supernatural beliefs, and demonic influences spelled disaster for Salem Village and its surrounding towns, while others fought werewolves and vampires on the frontier. With so much at risk, only god-fearing men and women were deemed innocent โ€” and those were few indeed.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: The Bowery Dogs (Werewolf 1969-1979 NYC). New York City in the 1970s. Crime. Drugs. Gang violence. Vast economic disparity. And werewolves. Itโ€™s a lean, ugly time to be alive, and the lone wolf doesnโ€™t stand a chance out there. In the end, all you really have is family.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Ruins of Empire (Mummy 1893-1924). Perhaps the quintessential era of the mummy in the minds of Westerners, this period saw the decline of the two greatest empires of the age: British and Ottoman. Walk with the Arisen as they bear witness to the death of the Victorian age, to pivotal mortal discoveries in Egypt, and to the horrors of the Great War.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: The Sundered World (Werewolf and Mage 5500-5000 BCE). At the birth of civilization, in the shadow of the Fall, the Awakened stand as champions and protectors of the agricultural villages spread across the Balkans. In a world without a Gauntlet, where Shadow and flesh mingle, the steady taming of the world by humanity conflicts with the half-spirit children of Father Wolf.

Hey guys at OPP. Thanks fro the awesome books so far, hope many more will come :).

Question regarding the Development Status bit of these Monday Meeting Updates. Is it possible to make sure that the Art Direction stuff is only in bold if it has changed status since the last update, like the other sections of the updates?

Also, is there someway to create a filter that filters out every news about gameline that someone isn’t interested in. Perhaps by setting some form of tag on each project with their respective gameline and world and allow people to check those gamelines and/or worlds they are interested in.

    For example
    []CofD
    []-VtR
    []-WtF
    []-MtAw
    …etc
    []Exalted
    []Trinity
    []-Adv
    []-Abb
    []-Aeon
    []Pug
    []WoD
    []-VtM
    []-WtA
    []-MtAs
    …etc

and so on and so on. This would help us to skip stuff we aren’t interested in and would make the updates easier to read.

    Thanks in advance.

Don’t tell anyone, but with all the books you could have stored in those super computers we use for texting and selfies, nobody actually needs new RPG books to play either. But until everybody figures it out, a lot of people want things to come out and be “official” and the like. Crazy, but we’ve got a whole business based around it. So, shhh, let’s just keep it between you and me. ๐Ÿ™‚

So this might be a dumb question but why does it appear that fulfillment of kickstarter rewards is seemingly random and not tied to backer number? I’d understand the difference on the EX3 kickstarter if two backers had the super deluxe vs the deluxe edition but I’m in the low hundreds while I’m aware of people in the three thousands who have tracking number already for the similar reward tiers. Am I missing something?

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

We’ve never said that backers get shipped their packages by the order they pledged, so we’ve never stipulated such delivery order to our shippers. For Exalted, we have three separate shippers shipping about 4,000 packages that need to ship everything from a single book to multiple regular deluxes, ultra deluxes, maps, Chibi bookmarks, and Screens in a single reward package. So the sequence any of them pack and ship rewards is up to them and the best practices they use.

    2. Ian A. A. Watson Avatar
      Ian A. A. Watson

The details are usually up to the shipper to work out. We have shippers specifically so we don’t have to worry about those details.

Generally, though, location plays a key factor. For example, it’s easier (and cheaper) to have all the European orders shipped together to a European distribution centre, and then shipped out to backers from there, than it is to ship things out alphabetically or numerically.

      1. MattD Avatar
        MattD

I expected as much but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask since I’m waiting on other Kickstarters based on my location in the queue. Since the individual I mentioned, that is in the three thousands, lives in the same state only about 30 min away I suspect we probably got batched with different shippers so there is no real information to glean there it seems.

I’m getting worried about the dark ages companion…
    A lot of artist troubles.
I fear for that quality. What’s going on? They aren’t on time or the quality is not what was expected or what?
I fear that since the artists are behind schedule, the other steps of the book will be rushed T-T

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

Have no fear, true believer! Artist shenanigans run the gamut of every possible woe you can imagine, but we have these situations all the time. Mirthful Mike only mentions them when he wants to. Judging the art for quality is a distinct other part of art direction, and something we take very seriously. As the Exalted 3rd backers will tell you, we don’t rush any of the steps and each stage is given the time it needs to be awesome. So we wouldn’t reduce layout time to fit some end date because the art is taking too long, we’d extend the end date so layout gets the time it needs. That being said, we’ve done the production end of the book creation process for a really long time, and we know ways to save time on the different stages if we really need to without risking the quality.

Hey, I know this is a bit late in asking, but:
Why did you guys and gals go with an advanced story for the 2nd Edition Vampire the Requeum Jumpstart book? It seems a bit weird, because it seems it would be for newbies, but the story requires expericed vampires (which seems more complicated to make). On that note, why not include premade characters?

Sorry, I thought the original quick start mini chronicle for VtR was perfect for jumping into the game, and am curious why you did not go with that model?

From myself: the logic is that we were more concerned that VtR1 players would be able to have a fun adventure in VtR2 than we were to indoctrinate newbies. Remember, a lot of our strategy for the first batch of 2nd Editions, at least, was to re-invigorate the community and start giving them new editions that would do that. With WoD getting 20th Anniversary Editions, there were a fair number of CofD players who thought the lines would be cancelled and we needed to show them that that just wasn’t so.

From Rose: For the jumpstart, we picked “Into the Void” because it blows the doors off of what people have been trained to expect from Vampire — instead of the Prince being all powerful, he dies at the beginning, and the story’s about the aftermath of living out that fuck-the-man fantasy.

I don’t think the characters are too complex to make. We hand out a couple of extra dots in the character creation rules, and that’s all it takes.

As for pregens… it’s been four years and I don’t totally remember. I _think_ it was because we didn’t have the page count.

Just to note, I thought Into the Void was absolutely amazing. i ran it numerous times for different groups to get them experienced with Vampire the Requiem. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind low experience jumpstarts, but IMO those don’t show the full crux of what these gamelines have to offer where as a higher experience story allows the characters to get into more mechanics and story development.

Well, like I said, our intention was to give a different taste of VtR2 than base-line starting. Glad it worked for you!

Happy to finally see Prince’s Gambit and that it was rapidly funded!

Now, looking at the first picture:

Incisor teeth as fangs… The “new” White Wolf strikes again.

I’m confused: are you trying to criticize someone here? Because that’s the art we commissioned from Mark Kelly for the Camarilla sect for Prince’s Gambit. To my knowledge, WWP didn’t have anything to do with it except to sign off on it.

What I meant it’s that’s the style of fangs they like and promote for VTM since they owned the IP. It’s good to know this time that decision came from somewhere else, because I was wondering myself if somebody else, directly involved with WoD, agree with that art direction.

I don’t like it, as you can guess, it has less presence, kind of childish and not scary at all. I just wanted to share my concern.

Well, I’ve been doing art for VtM since the main book, and art directing it since the first Storytellers Guide, and never had, or gave, a directive one way or the other. We allowed the artists to create them as they felt looked best, and still do, and I’m sure that that fang look is simply the one preferred by the artist, Mark Kelly.

If you get a chance, a couple of notes on how you do twist it for your own nefarious purposes would be great!

I don’t know if this is the place to post (I’ve also put this on the forum), but on the subject of Dark Eras Companion:

I’ve realized the books I love by OPP (Sothis Ascends, Tome of Secrets, this one, others) always have Dawkins and / or Sheppard on them. They seem to excel at packing content into their books. This book’s Mummy chapter gives us sorcerers, new antagonists, new relics, a new magic system, history, chronicle ideas, cults, more Deceived, and much more. It’s ridiculously good in quality and as value for money. These guys need to be called out for their work, because they set the standard.

Please pass on my praise and make sure they team up in future!!!

Glad you are enjoying and appreciate Matthew (Dawkins) and Malcolm (Sheppard)’s work! I’ll let them know!
