Now available on DriveThruRPG:

As the Prey Evolves…

But what about the stranger aspects of the World of Darkness?

Mortal Remains picks up where we left off with Night StalkersSpirit SlayersWitch Finders, and Slashers. In Mortal Remains, we explore the Vigil as it pertains to mummies, changelings, prometheans, demons, and sin-eaters.

So Too Must the Hunter…

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Fiction and ideas for bringing these strange monsters into your Hunter: The Vigil chronicle.
  • New Dread Powers to represent their fearsome arsenals.
  • New Compacts and Conspiracies.
  • Conversions to adapt Hunter: The Vigil’s rules to be compliant with The God-Machine Chronicle’s rules updates.

Literally just got the e-mail from DTRPG letting me know it is available. Headed there next to buy it. 😀

Had a chance to skim through it for an hour or so. Love it.

Hunter: The Vigil is my favorite line, so I am a bit biased. But the book is great, so far.

Oooh, had a lot of conversations with my groups about how you could work these things in. Very interested to see how you saw that working.

Will buy as soon as the PoD version is available 🙂

It’s hard to imagine anything human surviving against a version of D:tD demons, absent some deus ex machina powers like in “How an Angel Dies”.

For that matter, can any hunter survive under the Integrity rules if being attacked by or even witnessing the supernatural is a breaking point?

You need a better imagination. The real threat with hunting the Unchained, as outlined in their respective chapter, is them wooing you to their side, and from there stabbing you in the back. Physical danger, paranoia? Pshaw, the hunters are used to that.

Also, you are bluntly informed in the revision that it’s possible to replace a breaking point with a trigger point, ie an item of a Code. So yes, they can. And do, although they become…stranger.

        Whoops, double post.

You need better logic. That moral danger in no way detracts from the physical one of a being with no weakness, apocalyptic form better than the werewolves, Going Loud, Embeds and Exploits etc. Can the MR version still freeze someone in time? If anything it would make them more dangerous. (The moral danger seems overblown actually. Hearing about the God-Machine, I imagine most hunters would respond, “Why does God need humans to build Infrastructure? Isn’t it more likely this is an alien imitating God and His angels like you demons imitate cold war spies?”)

I’ll have to look at the trigger points, but since the Integrity rules encourage making new breaking points, that sounds like a lot of triggers.

No, they can’t. By D:tD canon, if they’re surprised, they still can’t.

This is why demons are paranoids, because the enemy you didn’t see and brings you out of your comfort zone is the truly threatening one. And the best victory is one you woo over to your side, which Unchained are good at doing. All they need to be persuasive is to make themselves seem like the good guys, which is what liars are really, really good at doing (“Don’t believe me? Oh, hi husband I got from a Cover contract, aren’t you genuinely happier with someone who isn’t an emotional abuser as your spouse? Back to my point, God or not it’s still a threat to you and yours, and I’m an enemy of it. And seeing how nice I am when I have the opportunity, doesn’t my side of things seem like the good guys?”)

Bringing demons out of the comfort zone what the Knights of St. Adrian do, because they’re simple, they’re completely unlike what they’re used to (being combat monsters), and apart from faded tattoos, they look and act the same as any other human. Nor do they need to investigate and possibly tip their hand, the angels do that for them.

Also, you have a warped view of Integrity, I think. Not everything causes breaking points, only things a person would find traumatic. Zombies? Maybe, but if the person knows the zombie is simply a mindless goon of a necromancer, simply seeing one just isn’t traumatizing enough. Killing one may be, because it splatters you with blood and viscera and all that, but you get bonuses for that. I’d also imagine that the people who are brave enough to actually look for the supernatural aren’t really the people with supernatural-related breaking points. Not anymore, at least.

Do you mean there’s no version of Frozen in Time? Without Exploits like that, The Word, Solitary Confinement, etc, that proves my point. As for surprise, that applies to everyone. Demons even have a couple of powers to negate it.

Demons all sound like Tempters here. They should expect attacks for questionable looking humans, what with Gos-Machine cultists, sleeper agents, etc. Being an undetectable liar shouldn’t make people automatically believe the demon.

From the rules update, “Even so, the player is welcome to decide that any event during a game is a breaking point and the Storyteller is likewise within her rights to make that choice for any character.” The five questions are just a starting point. Technically, there are potentially an infinite number. Everyone has a supernatural-related breaking point (What have you forgotten?”) and there’s no mechanism for removing them. The sample characters on p.185 all get a breaking point from seeing mechanisms covered in blood, even though it’s not one from their five questions at character creation. The implication is that all the ones in the chart apply.

You need a better imagination. The entire chapter is about how Unchained are moral dangers rather than physical ones. Paranoia, big grubbily monsters? Hunters are used to that. They are NOT used to the techgnostic view of the world, the view that seems oh so sensible, so tempting to believe…so easy to present your back to the demons’ knives, because it was either necessary and/or convenient…

And Integrity rules are bluntly pointed out as usable with the Code. So yes, hunters and do survive, and remain sane. They just become really, really strange.

Blood and Smoke is an independent book. Using this book (Mortal Remains), I will still need the basic book nWoD? Still need to use Hunter: The Vigil, the core book?

    1. marin Avatar
      marin

Yes to both. Mortal Remains is a GMC patch for Hunter, not a full-on Chronicle book like Blood and Smoke.

Depending on how things go, they might eventually give Hunter a Chronicle book, but Mortal Remains isn’t it.

I noticed the character sheet in the back only has four Beat boxes. Also, will there be interactive sheets sometime in the future?

Only 4 beat boxes because the 5th becomes an experience, I believe.

I think Mr Gone has an interactive GMC sheet for hunter.
