Tally-Ho! The Hunt Starts! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Of course, the big news is how fast the Hunter: The Vigil 2nd Edition Kickstarter funded!

We’ve passed the first Stretch Goal, for the Storyteller Screen as a physical project, and the second, the start of the HtV2e Companion book! And are darn close to the third!

Besides dropping the Hunter 2e text for backers throughout the KS, James and KS crew are also releasing the fiction sections from the book. Developer Monica Valentinelli has brought on renowned writer Cassandra Khaw to create spot-on and compelling fiction vignettes that run the gamut of the eerie experiences of our hunters!

Thanks to all of you who have backer this project, and who continue to converse about it both on the KS page in the Comments and Update Comments sections, as well as on other social media.

Please, keep it up!

We appreciate so much when our awesome community speaks up about what they like about what we are doing, and even when there are criticisms sprinkled in – so long as they are respectful of our talented and awesome creators. We’ve never claimed to be perfect, and can use to know where we can do better!

And for a Kickstarter, getting out there and talking about it is the second-most important and supportive thing any backer can do after they’ve backed the project (which is the number one supportive thing, of course).

Every time you mention the Hunter: The Vigil 2e KS, a hunter gets a new candle!

If you scroll down to our Media section below, you’ll note that we’ve given you links to, I think, the largest number of Actual Play Streams, Podcasts, YouTube Vids, and our usual jam-packed with goodness Twitch schedule for this week that we’ve ever posted here. (In fact, there are two schedules, the text and the visual, for easy reading no matter your preferred info-graphic style).

So what do you think of that?

Do you enjoy the links we’ve been posting every week; do you click on them? Basically, has our including them helped you further enjoy the many game worlds (One Path) that we offer?

There’s a school of thought that says that new and younger gamers are far more likely to view Twitch streams and YouTube vids for their method of getting into games, rather than older fans who first picked up their books in game stores.

Do you think that’s accurate? I know that when I watch them, and quality can vary, but when I do, I enjoy them. But they aren’t my personal best way of finding out about new games or getting a feel for them. I do know that watching others play is a good intermediate step between just reading game books and actually playing myself – which remains my best way of really digging into a game, personally.

Pugmire art by Cathy Wilkins

We at Onyx Path, as you might imagine, remain dedicated to trying to present our worlds in all the venues that folks use to enjoy this hobby of ours. In fact, you can probably dig up an MMN blog post from when I first started doing these and I’ll be saying that exact thing. So, we keep pushing to get our books into stores in ways that work for us, as well as trying to provide access to more and better streaming events.

We have folks who are extremely engaged with both, and even more, methods of presenting our game lines and worlds. Great looking books, great setting, great game rules, engaging actual play – all of it is important to our collective crew. So we have most of our community’s interests covered, we think.

Really, it all comes down to a fantastic time “at the table” and these are all ways to get there.

Hunters Hunted 2 art by Cathy Wilkins

At the Monday Lunch Meeting today, we did an extra bit of follow-up on company-wide improvements first reviewed during our Onyx Path Summit in January. Some of those are things like further pay increases for our creators, and others are productivity processes that we want to implement.

Not a lot of creative fun stuff, but things that we do that we want to improve as we move forward.

Vampire: The Requiem 2e art by Cathy Wilkins

One of things we are looking at is to further explain just what we are doing with our Community Content sites: The StoryPath Nexus – currently for Scion and Trinity Continuum projects, The Slarecian Vault for Scarred Land projects, and Canis Minor for Realms of Pugmire stuff.

We have created the sites, provided templates, made up art-packs, and set up the rules for what can and can’t go up on the sites. But, and this is a biggie, the projects up there are not our projects. They are not official, they are not “canon”.

Except as much as they are useful for your gaming group, or are useful and fun to read through. More options, more ideas = great!

Our hope is that Community Content creators try and keep to the tone and intention we use in the official projects we ourselves are creating, while being able to explore subjects and parts of the worlds we aren’t able or interested in delving into.

If that doesn’t happen, well, we’re looking to have a pretty standardized set of responses that we’ll go through. We want Community Content creators to feel like they have the freedom to create, not that we are looking over their shoulders. We also have a responsibility to each of the game lines, and Onyx Path as a whole, as well as our community. So, it’s not cut and dried. Expect that there’ll be some bumpier parts to the ride as we get things figured out.

But we will. We always do.

Vampire: The Requiem 1e art by Cathy Wilkins

One other thing that came up. Up above I named the three Community Content sites we have currently. That’s all of them. We have no connection and derive no direct payments or benefits from the Storytellers Vault for the White Wolf IPs. Even for projects based on game lines we created. So, if you do have issues with the SV, ya gotta reach out to Paradox/WW.

Yep, there sure are a lot of ways to get your gaming goodness these days. And yep, it can be confusing, we know. If you don’t know what we’re doing vs somebody else, I suggest reaching out on our social media. Our Facebook page, our Twitter, our official Discord channels. We have folks there that can help you. We even have handy graphics created by Ian Watson or Meredith Gerber that break down what we are publishing by whether we own it, are working with folks, or license it.

It is indeed a brave new world in terms of TTRPG gaming. And in our case it’s a brave:

Many Worlds, One Path!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Today we celebrate the creative life of one of our favorite artists, Cathy Wilkins, who passed away last week. She was one of the nicest people Mike and I have had the pleasure to art direct, and as nice as she was, her talent was even greater. I knew that when I scrambled to get art for our early CofD (nWoD) projects that having Cathy working on the project guaranteed beautiful illustrations – and that she would make the extra effort to follow up on details that tied to the text she was given. We will all miss her, and as a small memorial, all the art inside this weeks MMN blog is work she did for us in the past.

It’s interesting how the art change our view of the book, at least my view. While the first 3 editions of VtM where all black and white, the art bring us the personal horror of the game. The forth brought some color without loosing the feeling.
The artists in VtR did an amazing job bringing this feeling while still capturing the essence os an entire different game. True mastery…
Than we have V5… man… Twilight is better (and their vampire shine in the sun… don’t die, SHINE)… bad joke, the horror I felt was the horror my eyes saw with the concept they were bringing, it’s not bad art, it’s bad concept…
Sad week for those who appreciate a book for more than the writings…

Art is – as been said by smarter people than me – by its very nature, subjective. I think we showed with Chicago By Night and its extra books, and Cults of the Blood Gods, from what we’ve shown with its KS, that the V5 model of aesthetics can indeed work for a wide audience. Even subjectively. 🙂

      1. Mateus Luz Avatar

The art itself is not bad, it just don’t fit on what a personal horror game would seam to me. Also, the way the vampires dress, it’s hard to go unnoticed…

But it’s true, art is subjective, I may give another chance to V5 (but V20 was sooooo better…)

I didn’t realize Cathy was the same artist for all those pieces. Some of my favourite art from Requiem is hers (that Ordo Dracul piece is so iconic). What a loss. Many condolences.

Yup, she was able to try out different styles very successfully. Another great reason we enjoyed working with her. Thanks!

And so Titanomachy takes another step forward, leaving Saints and Monsters in its wake… colour me excited!

Knowing that so many of these projects are approaching fruition and that my group is about to embark on their first Scion experience, I have to ask how much of this will be seeing the light of day soon.
Will any Titan previews be shown to the Scion kickstarters before it appears on DTRPG? Will Demigod be getting its own kickstarter later on? Will Neall ever have a chance to sleep again? The list goes on and on!

I’m also on tenterhooks for Ghost Hunters – it feels like the thing’ll be a nice way of closing off the “classic” world of darkness before the next editions (the New Old World of Darkness? NOWoD?) really kick in. Thank you for finding a way to bring some Hunters of Ghosts back into the spotlight!

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

I think any previews will be things we put up here on our website and on our social media rather than restricting access to the KS. Demigod will absolutely have a Kickstarter. Did Neall ever sleep before? It’s been a long road for Ghost Hunters, and now it’s very close indeed!

That last piece of art you shared, I remember it being one from Vampire: The Requiem that really made me happy. So full of lovely, intriguing possibilities. The world is smaller whenever it loses an artist, but I’m glad we had her in our world(s).

Yes, it really is a classic at this point. Thanks!

  6. Louis Garcia Avatar

Disappointing to hear about Cathy Wilkins. Such great work, especially the early work in Requiem. At the consumer end, we appreciate the art and the feelings it conveys is something we make part of our game, at our table with our friends. Yet, we’ll never know the creator as a person. When I hear they have passed, it makes me wonder what they left behind, family, friends, a life’s work. A bit sad to me.

As I’m not a big fan of video and audio reviews I’d appreciate if you’d add also some links to written reviews of your current projects.

One additional way to make me happy would be some hints for which of the CofD lines projects might be coming. I know you you are restricting your communication due to various, understandable, reasons, but as I feel the focus of Onyx Path is shifting more to the IPs you own some sign that you are planning more source book for the existing game lines besides the one funded via KS would be great. Or is the financial risk for such projects currently just to high?
I’d be happy if you’d share some of the things you consider when defining “this is a game line where creating a new book makes sense”
    Regards
    Ferdinand

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

Well, to go in reverse of the order of your questions, first I look to see whether a new book for a line is likely to pay for the cost of creating it. If not, then there better be a pretty sweet reason for doing a book that in the greatest likelihood will actually cost us to create instead of a project that looks like it will cover its costs or do even better. Then, we look to see if the pitched idea for the project is actually needed by the line, and to what degree. Like, will 90% of the line’s fans want this book? 50%? 25% The smaller the number we estimate, the less likely it is to get made instead of a project that a larger number of our community will want.

Links to written reviews, I thought we had some already, and we’ve certainly posted elsewhere on our social media when we’re sent them. But that’s the thing, we need to get sent them – every link in the Media section is one sent to Matthew. So if you know reviewers, have them send links to their written reviews! Thanks!

Hints are all too often taken as promises by our community, and then, when for any reason we don’t go ahead with that project, we are in the position of having taken something away from the fans. We get accused of breaking promises. So, the fewer times we hint, the better off we are and the more able to create the projects you love without unnecessary and unneeded stress. Now, as for us shifting focus, some of that may be perception because we have started to populate these other game lines we’ve been talking about for years, and some of that is out of our hands. At one point, at the early stages of our license for the WW IPs, I created yearly schedules of game lines’ books. Because of how the license has evolved through multiple owners, our approach is now by necessity more of a one book in a line at a time approach, which means each project is brought on when we get a pitch we think would work and then that WW approves it. So, three things have to happen: we have to get a pitch, that pitch has to be compelling for us and we have to think it would be compelling for that line’s fans, and WW has to OK it.

      1. Ferdinand Avatar
        Ferdinand

Thank you for your answer Rich!
I know that you got a bloody nose with hinting about things and then it did not happen as you envisioned it, so I’ll not annoy you with any such requests. I just want to say, that I’m a big fan of CofD – I own pretty much every book in pdf and every core rule book in print. I also enjoy the 20th A. editions – so I hope there will be more of those as well.
I hope that there will be more of those projects in the not-so-distant-future of Onyx Path.

        Regards

        1. richt Avatar
          richt

No problem. Like I mentioned last week, I think it was, we are working in a different way with the WW IP licenses than when we first started, and so we generally have to pitch a book at a time as we get through a bunch. Whereas previously, I’d pitch one or even two years’ worth of books at a time, which meant we could try and have a consistent and ongoing schedule. Different strokes and all that, but it does tend to make our releases a bit more ragged, in terms of the schedule. Not the books themselves! 🙂

  8. Jonathan Avatar

I would like to echo Yossarian (above). Cathy’s passing is a true loss to us. 🙁

I personally do not engage in any social media. I come here for product news, get emails regarding new releases, and go over to the forums if I want to talk to other players. I *might* watch a YouTube product review but am more likely to go to a blog or other written review source.

I love most everything I’ve seen from the Community Content programs so far. I have not looked at the content guidelines as I have nothing to contribute to any of them at the moment. Part of me agrees about maintaining a certain tone to the various games but another part of me feels that the CC programs are the perfect place to experiment (within some constraints) because of their non-canonical status.

Intrigued by Saints and Monsters (and always glad to see more Scion).

Do you mind if I ask if you consider yourself a long-time TTRPG gamer? As for CC content, like I said, we’re going to be batting the ideas for just how tight we keep things on our view of the brand for quite some time, I’m betting. Thanks-

    Re: Twitch
I don’t know in which category I fall. Old school? Almost 40 and I started playing during the revised era? In any case, I enjoy twitch a lot as an intermediary stage or as a replacement for a game I just don’t have the bandwidth to run.

I just can’t play all the games I buy, but I can still enjoy watching The Primogen run his game of Changeling: the Lost. Then again, sometimes I can play the game and then watching a stream is a great way to internalize new concepts especially if the show takes the time to teach how to play as concepts become relevant. For example, right now I’m running Star Trek, but before I started my game I watched a few episodes of Shield of Tomorrow. I got a feel for the game AND saw that there were one or two rules that I hadn’t gotten right. And now my game is going really well. One of my best to be honest.

    Re: the links
To be honest, I do not use them. I look at the twitch schedule here but I do not use the links. However, I love that it’s there because it gives visibility to talented folks whose hard work deserves to be seen.

To clarify, I don’t use them because I made the choice to focus on watching Twitch. I enjoy having everything in the same space and there is plenty of content to keep me happy there.

Fair enough, since one way or the other, you get over to our Twitch streaming, and others too.

My apologies for not mentioning her passing. I didn’t noticed you mentioning it

Don’t worry, I talk about her in the Reason to Celebrate section at the end.

I get a lot of value out of having the community content links for podcast, streams, and youtube videos.

Chazz- are you getting a measurable amount of folks coming to your stuff via the Monday Meeting Notes blog links? Or do you click on them for your own fun? Or both? No wrong answer. 🙂

As a very small Youtuber who’ve been promoted here half a handful of times so far, clicks from this website makes up 6,7% of my traffic in the last 28 days. All in all, it’s only a matter of a few dozen people checking in, but when you have a small audience like me, it matters a lot.

Any idea when Geist 2 will hit IPR? I missed the KS and plan to purchase as soon as I can. I realize it’ll be a while, I just want to know when I should start looking.

Next month, I believe. We do need to let backers get their copies and all that, but I’m sure it’ll be ready for sale as soon as we can make it so.

So, just as a question, for Trinity Distant worlds, we have: Going to dev.

What does that mean? Giong to development?

It’s in the Proofing section, so going to developer for review.

I don’t watch streams of gaming unless it’s someone I know. I love the medium but I’ve never enjoyed it as a spectator sport, so to speak. Then again, I’m 30 so depending on your perspective I might not count as a “younger” gamer anyway.

I learn about games by occasional browsing of sale websites like DrivethruRPG, friend recommendations, and newsletters from companies I like. I’ve suspected this is a fairly idiosyncratic approach for awhile though.
