Not About a Kickstarter! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Yes, that’s right, we actually do not have a Kickstarter running this week. Weird, huh?

Legendlore just wrapped up with a very strong (and unexpected but delightful) final 48 hours last week, and we have not yet launched the They Came From Beyond the Grave! KS.

So instead, let me tell you about the guy I illustrated for the cover shown above. In-universe (or Continuum), that’s Duke Rollo, the gonzo journalist/commentator of the TC: Aberrant setting.

But.

He’s also Justin Achilli, who originated the character and wrote both small Duke Rollo books – one for first edition Aberrant and now the book pictured for Trinity Continuum: Aberrant.

I originally pictured him as Justin appeared back then, piercings and all, and with a very gonzo attitude to life, and work, and especially after-hours playtime. The version above was drawn to still be the same character, but seasoned. More experienced, but still railing against the inequities of the TC: Aberrant world.

I bring this up because real-world Justin has amassed even more experience and knowledge since the WW days, and has explored game design in the electronic gaming sphere very successfully, and yet has never stopped applying what he has learned to TTRPGs, and specifically the World of Darkness and Vampire: The Masquerade.

His experience with party deduction games led to his working with us on The Prince’s Gambit card game, for example. And his online design theory posts through the years are rife with game design theory that could be applied to electronic games, or right back in TTRPGs.

And in fact, he himself, is also right back in TTRPGs with last week’s announcement that Justin is the new Creative Lead for the WoD 5th Edition efforts over at Paradox!

Congrats, Justin!

Now, I have a long history with Justin, going back to when he was developing the RAGE card game at WW. (A “dragon biting some clown in half”, anybody?) He was developer and I was art director for years on VtM Revised, we worked on the late, lamented, WoD MMO together, and he was the first developer for V20, and then helmed many V20 books for Onyx Path.

And yet, even I really don’t know what he’s planning for V5. The Covid situation here and in Sweden, where Paradox is based, has complicated matters, so we’re still looking forward to what’s going to happen next.

As they say, more news when we have it!

Surely You Have Something Kickstarter-y?

OK. Fair enough, I hear ya!

You want to know more about They Came From Beyond the Grave!, especially since that’s going to be the subject of our next Kickstarter.

Well, it is the second game in the They Came From…! game line, and this time, rather than being based in the world of Sci-Fi movies of the 50s, TCFBtGrave! is set in two time periods favored by horror movies of the 60s and 70s: the Victorian Era and the late 60s into the 70s.

In fact, the game supports either era, or both with players swapping back and forth between the two. Hammer Horror is of course a huge influence, along with Roger Corman horror films, and even the Dark Shadows TV series.

Like TCFBtSea!, TCFBtGrave! uses the Storypath System plus Quip cards that allow players to contribute appropriate (or far more often extremely inappropriate) comments and dialogue that is often hilarious, but also can give mechanical benefits to the character. With the cards, the player doesn’t need to be funny, just how they use the quip.

Similarly, there are cards for filmic situations appropriate to the genre we’re emulating, like “The Devil Himself!”, or “Missing Scene” which allows for a miraculous escape that players can note as having happened during that scene. It was amazing, just a shame the scene is missing, but at least we’re all OK.

Honestly, we should have one titled “Christopher Lee’s Voice”, but that might be too powerful for players.

Keep an eye out on our social media as we continue to tease the game, and check out the actual play sessions that are available on our Twitch channel.

Sorry to say it, but the pandemic is still affecting everyone – writers, printers, shippers – so while we are seeing some folks come back to business as sorta-normal, many others still can’t do that. Sometimes that’s our creators, and other times it’s our manufacturers and shippers. I’m currently waiting for at least five books worth of PoD proofs to get to me for approval so we can start selling them.

So, please hang in with us as we maneuver through this continuing alteration in our normal business practices. There’s a lot of things changing all across the world, and our little hobby isn’t in a bubble – and even if it was, we’re still going to be affected like I mention above. Just know that we are doing what we can to get you the materials so you can enjoy our:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

I’d really like to get back to needing to pull wacky things that happened on this date, but we need to celebrate the life of a towering giant in his field. Ennio Morricone, one of the greatest film composers, has left this earth he brought so much magic and passion and joy to. The Untouchables. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The Mission. Once Upon A Time In the West. His film scores were the background music I played while illustrating all the way back to high school, and as late as two weeks ago I asked Alexa to “Play Ennio Morriconi music” as I wrote that week’s MMN blog. Not only was he a genius in composing instrumental scores, but he was willing to incorporate single instruments, or non-instruments, or inserted choral sections, or even compose an entire theme using fart sounds. Maybe not to everyone’s tastes, that last example, but my point is, he stretched what could be done with musical scores with a deft hand and a genius’s ear. His like will not be heard again.

May I ask if Mask of the Mythos and Scion: Dragon will be part of the same kickstarter!?

We have discussed that sort of combo KS, and there are pros and cons to trying it. So I won’t say it couldn’t happen. We’ll just need to see when we’re closer to the time we’re ready to run one. Good question, though!

Quite a confident move, kickstarting the second They Came game before the first one’s even out! You’ll definitely have my money, but do you think it’ll affect the project’s success to have it launch before people have had a chance to see how well the first one works?

Between that and the other 5 KS projects waiting to launch, I imagine the rest of the year is going to be pretty busy as well! Will you be going back-to-back-to-back, or will you be allowing yourselves a chance to breathe in between rounds?

On a more sombre note, Ennio Morricone was actually the inspiration for my first RPG campaign, putting D&D characters into the endless desert and oases of a dying world eaten by Aberrations. The RPG was terrible, but the image he painted with his music for Leone’s films set an emotional and evocative ideal I knew I wanted to strive for in my attempts at storytelling. We should all hope to get as much emotional content into a single work in our lives as he achieved in every song.
    He shall be missed.

That was my thought, too. I‘m currently waiting for four Onyx Path KSs, two of them 2nd Editions. There I know roughly what to expect. We always get the pdfs, but leafing through the real book is different. I would love to have recieved TCFBTSea before TCFBTGrave.

I’m in the same position, waiting for fulfillment on various Exalted kickstarters. To be honest, while I will back a new Exalted KS if one comes forth, I’m not going to back KS for any of the other lines. Both of the “They Came from” books sound interesting and I may purchase them when they are available for sale, but I’m not going to spend the money up front.

Totally makes sense. If I can dig in a bit deeper, and this isn’t meant to try and convince you so much as to lay out the options, backing a project in one of our KSs has some advantages. First, you get to read the pretty much completed manuscript by the time the KS is over. Two, most backers get added projects and perks in the form of Stretch Goals, the extent of which depends on the Kickstarter campaign. Third, even if you don’t want to back the KS and maybe the Stretch Goal freebies aren’t compelling for you, we then will open up a project for post-KS ordering on BackerKit. The advantage there is that BackerKit doesn’t charge right when you place your “order”, they charge when we start finalizing everything while the project is at press. So much later than the end of the KS. Anyway, like I said, your approach totally makes sense and we really want people to engage with how they get their hands on our projects in the way that works for them. Thanks!

If you have not already done so, I highly recommend checking out “They Came From Devil’s Reef” on Twitch and the “They Came From Beyond the Grave” one-shot on Twitch / Youtube. These have sold everyone I introduced them to on the games who didn’t back the TCFBtS Kickstarter.

Still might happen, although it’ll be very close with Sea at press and printing and us not having launched the Grave KS yet, and that should run for a month. At worst, you can check out Grave’s BackerKit page if we don’t get Sea shipped before the KS is over.

I can’t speak for Rich, but as someone who has helped on both They Came From games, I feel Beyond the Grave is less of a supplemental game, and more of its own thing. Lots of people who didn’t groove on the 50s movie vibe of the first one will consider the Hammer Horror feel of Beyond the Grave without consideration of what the first game offers. It’s not like the Chronicles of Darkness games that are at least tangentially connected to the same world.

      1. richt Avatar
        richt

You speak real gud, Eddy. Only thing I’d add is that while the They Came From…! games aren’t written assuming that they are all set in a singular world where movie/tv logic applies, you can in fact use elements and characters from one game in the other if your play group is OK with the differences in tone built into each game. Why not have crab-men rise out of the sea to attack 70s vampire hunters if that sounds good to you? Make them zombie crab-men, killed in the 50s by the parents of the current PCs, and you’re really doing a mash-up!

    3. richt Avatar
      richt

Eddy handled most of the response, but let me agree that Morricone was just hugely inspirational across so many medias and genres. If you are interested and can find it, check out a vid where somebody took the Tower of Joy fight scene from Game of Thrones but replaced the music with Morricone’s. So much more impactful, and the music in GoT is generally excellent.

    Good morning from Germany 🙂

I noticed during the Cults of the Blood Gods kickstarter that you did not offer PoD coupons for the stretchgoal content like you did with Chicago by Night and I heard somewhere that Modiphius is not a big fan of PoD stuff. Will it be possible to acquire printed versions of those three books later as usual?

I wish you the best <3

You might have missed it, but I think we noted even during the KS that we were not able to do PoD versions of those three projects at this time. maybe that will change in the future, and we’ll certainly let folks know if it does!

    Eddy,
I’m too lazy to compare this to last week’s list, but does the lack of bold indicate that all statuses are the same as last week? If so, I think that is one of only a handful of times that has happened and worthy of a toast!

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

Not Eddy, but. Yes, no bolds = no movement out of that phase. Could still be plenty of movement within the phase, though, so it’s not like no work is getting done. Beyond that, usually for holiday weekends like we just had, we still get progress on some projects as our creators use the holiday to do more work, like freelancers have done since time immemorial. Like I noted in the blog, Covid has added so many other changes to people’s lives that it seems like everybody has to spend more time on those than on using an extra time on projects.

      1. ThomasM Avatar
        ThomasM

        Rich,
Thank you and bless the freelancers who decide to work on their holidays. They are far more dedicated to their craft than me (although I did run two games this weekend so.. yay, me?).

        1. richt Avatar
          richt

Yes, holidays are great for playing games, too! Good for you! Freelancers need to create to get paid, so large blocks of time are golden opportunities. I did most of my Magic Card art on weekends and holidays, back in the day.

I was psyched to hear the announcement concerning Justin’s new position with Paradox! One thing that worried me when Paradox purchased the WoD IP, was that an entirely new team of developers/writers would be working on these games that I had come to love. Mind you… I’m not opposed to adding new writers with a fresh outlook on things. Quite the contrary. But I feel like there needs to be some continuity as well, and Justin certainly brings that to the table.

    1. richt Avatar

He certainly has the brand experience up to V5, and a lot more experience on dealing with other projects outside of TTRPGs, so the mix is certainly promising!

Want to say I’m enjoying all the things that have been coming through lately, in particular the Scion Companion via backer rewards.

But I also noticed something on the schedule for releases here on Monday Meeting. Scion: God has sort of.. Disappeared? Did something set it back? Or has OPP decided to focus on Demigod and these other supplements first rather than the original plans for Demigod/God being KS’ed together?

Sorry if it’s already been covered in previous Monday Meetings. But just curious.

    1. richt Avatar
      richt

Did we have that plan at one point? I really don’t remember. Certainly not for quite some time, as there’s no way both books could have been developed together. First Scion: Demigod, then we’ll move onto Scion: God. There should be some additional projects to come out of Demigod’s KS, too, but those shouldn’t effect Scion: God. Thanks!

Yeah, God has always been in a rough pitch stage, waiting on Demigod to be finished. It didn’t disappear so much as it hasn’t been started yet, and that’s all by design!

I was going to post this as a comedy laugh post, but actually, on reflection it’s a very valid thing.

The title: “They Came From Beyond the Grave!”

I’m still a little blurry from having only woken up a short while ago and (despite knowing the title lol) read it as They Came From Beyond the Gravel – I went “what!?”

So please be careful with your fonts in the books so that ! doesn’t look like a “l” 😀

As luck would have it, the grave was covered in gravel, so we’re good!

Just wait until he reads the official cookbook of the series: “They Came From Beyond The Gravy!(New ways to combine turkey recipes with Hammer Horror!)”

I hear the Rocky Horror Picture Show has a good recipe for Meatloaf.

“Checking with Gunship” sounds really foreboding; did Aberrant start an international incident already?!

We’re checking with our gunship, might be ready to give orders to it, but nobody has caused an international incident yet. Well, this week.

I can’t overstate the degree to which I’m looking forward to Exalted: Fangs at the Gates. With it in Page XX editing, I’m at the edge of my seat waiting for it to go POD-available.
