Lots of fun things happened on Halloween a few days ago – I hope you and yours enjoyed a good Trick and/or Treat! For us, that day also marked the end of the Deluxe 20th Anniversary WoD: Ghost Hunters Kickstarter!
Which was pretty sweet, all told. We surpassed our estimate for pledges and burned through a thematically appropriate (and SPOOKY!) 13 Stretch Goals!
Once again, thanks to all of you who pledged and participated and spread the word! We could not do it without you!
Sometime this month, we hope to Kickstart our next project: Dead Man’s Rust for the Scarred Lands 5e setting. This is a mega-adventure that is based around an ominous (and SPOOKY!) affliction that threatens many of the inhabitants of Ghelspad!
More on this when we have a firm date for the KS’s start. As I mentioned before here on the MMN blog, we decided on putting Dead Man’s Rust‘s KS in here many weeks ago in response to the uncertainty of the elections here in the US. Now, on election-eve, and with little greater clarity as to how things will go, I’m glad we made that call on the Kickstarter.
One other bit of good news in Kickstarter-land, which can be SPOOKY! all by itself, is that our four KSs that were delayed because of the effects of Covid have now started shipping out. The new Creature Collection 5e for Scarred Lands (a gorgeous and SPOOKY! book) finished shipping a few weeks ago, and They Came From Beneath the Sea! (SPOOKY! seas) is finishing right now, to be followed this week by Dark Eras 2 (SPOOKY! through time), and then Pirates of Pugmire (Yarr! SPOOKY!? OK, enough.).
Whew! So glad our printers and fulfillers were able to get all the pieces together at last. Thanks to all of our backers who were so understanding of the challenges they faced due to the changes brought on to both the printing and shipping businesses due to the pandemic.
So What Else Is Going On That’s Not KS-Related?
Well, there’s the election tomorrow, so we discussed that. In general, we’re assuming that Tuesday and probably Wednesday are going to be a wash for our creators. It’s going to be pretty distracting even if you aren’t invested in the situation, and most of our crew truly care about the issues that are playing out tomorrow (and maybe longer). With that, we optimistically set up some meetings later in the week.
While all that is going on, we are reviewing the responses we’ve received so far to our Onyx Path Customer Survey 2020 edition. If you haven’t heard of it, we’re asking our community to fill out a pretty brief survey that we hope will express your interests and give us some good ideas as we start to prep for our 2021 Summit.
Here’s the link: https://forms.gle/k6J1UMV3h5fCx3FD9
Just from the over 500 responses we’ve received so far, there are a few notes I’d like to share. This is in no way meant to make anybody feel bad who responded, we just want to be sure that people are informed about a few things. Regular readers of this blog may already be aware of these things, but please do pass them on if you see the chance:
1- We did not publish the Deluxe V20 book. Eddy and I were on the team at CCP who did create the book and get it printed and out, but it was CCP during their ownership that published that first “love letter to the fans”. Also, the Deluxe V20 book itself was not Kickstarted. Onyx Path‘s very first Kickstarter project was for the V20 Companion and started our long tradition of Kickstarting 20th Anniversary Editions, but the main book was offered on pre-order without a KS.
2- To the person who was so pissed off that we asked them what country they were living in, in an optional survey that you don’t even need to answer every question on, that they answered every question with FU! (except they wrote it out), here’s hoping you feel a lot better after that cathartic moment. Glad we could help!
3- Big one here, folks: We do not own the World of Darkness, Chronicles of Darkness, or Exalted, game lines. We pitch our ideas to Paradox, who does own them, and they give us approval or not on those ideas for projects. We literally can not legally publish a project they have not agreed to. We don’t hate your favorite game line because we haven’t published anything recently for it, seriously.
4- Another along the same lines: We did not create Vampire 5th Edition, nor the Camarilla or Anarchs books. Onyx Path didn’t have a thing to do with those books, even if there are some freelancers hired in common by our company and Paradox. The 5th Edition setting and rules decisions were made by the Paradox White Wolf team. We have created several books for that game line that we think are pretty damn good, but we work with their set-up for how the TTRPG books need to be. It’s their property after all.
4.5- As you might tell from the points above, we are a licensee of Paradox, whose license allows us to create projects based in their Intellectual Properties. As a licensee, we have no say on what other licenses are arranged by Paradox for their IPs. We don’t have inside info on them, and we don’t get to add our two cents into their business decisions as to what other kinds of projects are licensed.
A few responses told us not to do X, and X was something we had no connection to, so I thought it would help if I laid out the info above. We know that the ownership changes over the years combined with some books being licenses and others being made inside Paradox has been hard to keep track of. It’s not like the old White Wolf days, certainly.
Besides that, if you haven’t yet filled out the Survey, and have a spare five minutes, we would really appreciate your sending it in and helping us get some info on just what we can do to create the sorts of game books and experiences your enjoy. Thanks!
Finally, everybody, please take care in the next few days, and we’ll see you back at our:

Virtual TableTop!
Introducing a Virtual Tabletop adventure: the Gauntlet of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop!
Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.
Gauntlet of Spiragos is a Scarred Lands adventure designed for 1st level characters, although it can be easily modified for characters of up to 5th level.
Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Get started quickly with built-in support for most popular game systems. Whether you’re brand new to TTRPGs or a veteran tabletop gamer, Astral‘s ease-of-use and built in automation is designed to streamline gameplay.
Astral is browser-based and uses the latest technology to streamline your storytelling experience. Connect with your party online and run your campaigns however you like. Astral offers tools optimized for phone, tablet, and desktop devices, no installation required.
Build epic battlemaps using Astral‘s enormous collection of scenery, props, and tokens or upload your own. Pro users gain access to over 12,000+ assets and fresh new packs every month. Add weather, visual effects, triggers, and so much more with easy-to-use tools

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
As we stand on the cusp of change and potential upheaval throughout the US and inevitably beyond, let’s celebrate our friends and those who we can celebrate and/or commiserate with. Friends who have your back through thick or thin, and also friends who might not go that far, but who make you feel better anyway! And take care, all of youse.
I wasn’t sure if that first image of the cityscape was election night in the US or from a new Onyx book. 😉
Looking forward to getting They Came From Beneath the Sea in the mail soon.
Be safe everyone.
Pretty much both! You too!
R.I.P. Sean Connery
“… From thish world I musht pash…”
“I’ll play yuir game, you rogue!”
Huh… I had figured Masks would be next, since its KS AD appears to be done… is it going to be a double feature KS alongside Dragon, then?
I am hoping that turns out to be the case, but it looks like Dragon is a bit behind Masks Of The Mythos now. Mostly I am hoping they kickstart together cause I know they like to mix it up with each Kickstarter, so if a Scion product goes up, they are gonna want to do other things before returning to another Scion product. I am gonna donate either way but I will admit Scion Dragon is the one I am salivating the most for now. 🙂
It is, but that shouldn’t effect any Kickstarter plans. Thanks!
We’ll let you know when things are clearer as to the future. Thanks!
I forgot to mention it in the survey so I hope it is ok to say it here. I like that you have done a few community content spotlights over the past few weeks and hope it becomes a regular feature of the blog.
I second that, this is a great idea!
We are very much in support of our various community content sites: Storypath Nexus for Scion, Trinity Continuum, They Came From!, Dystopia Rising Evolution, etc.; Slarecian Vault for Scarred Lands; Canis Minor for Realms of Pugmire games. So, expect that we will continue to feature community content along with our own projects. If you haven’t listened to it yet, the Onyx Pathcast did an episode recently that was excellent, as well.
Under the “how often do you play question” it doesn’t have an option for “fortnightly” gaming, which is how I roll. Can you update it?
No, we don’t need that level of granularity, just pick whichever you think best describes your enthusiasm to play- if it’s all you can do to make those sessions then it’s more like monthly, if you are constantly thinking about playing on the off weeks, then call it weekly. 🙂
Is “The Hedge” book for Changeling the Post 2e still in the development pipeline plan?
If it’s not on the progress report, then it would be premature to talk about a project. Thanks!
It would be great if you could post some results from the survey in the next Monday Meeting posts.
We’ll have to see if we have any closed down and tabulated by then. I know we want to give folks plenty of time to fill them out, and we’re sending out the links to them in a few stages.
One thing that confused me about the survey was the question, “What is your favorite Onyx Path RPG?” I felt it was somewhat ambiguous due to the issues you described above. OP creates Chronicles of Darkness games under license from Paradox. Would they be considered OP RPGs in this context or no? Ditto for the 20th anniversary game lines.
Understood- we really aren’t qualifying those questions as we want folks to answer as they think about their favs. In general, I’d say that if you have books with our logo on them, then that line qualifies. Thanks!
Yeah, I took it to mean “your favorite RPG published by Onyx Path”. Hence I did not list Mummy: the Resurrection* since Onyx Path has not published it (yet, he says hopefully).
*That’s correct, Matthew; I am the one guy that likes MtR more than any other WoD game.:)
MtR is also my favourite oWoD game line.
I still hope there will be a 20th A. edition for it…
I mean it doesn’t look to good as there has been no sign for a big game line book since Wraith 20 – but the KS for Ghost Hunters shows that the 20th A. editions are not yet dead and burried …
Up to Paradox.
Just FYI, Changeling20 followed after Wraith20.
Sorry – I got confused due to the delivery. Of course I also backed C20 !
Still I hold a candle of hope in my heart that Paradox allows for more 20th A. Ed.!
C20 was started in 2015 … and since 5 years no additional big source books 🙁
This is no criticism on Onyx Path ! I know you are bound by the contract, just my expression of longing for an update of the great games from the past.
I’m kind of hoping They Came From [Classified]! is actually the name of the book, and it’s a spy movie game.
Here’s hoping we know who won the US election before the next MMN!
Oh, let’s hope so!
I have to thank the team for Aberrant pre-errata PDF. The art is beautiful the improvements on the manuscript are great!
The “post Election Day” art gives a certain Lovecraft chills, but I know it’s just the next president…
Great to hear thanks, and yes, I believe the chills were part of Mirthful Mike’s intention when we picked art to top the blog!
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to provide feedback via the survey. It is a huge shame that some choose to take out their frustrations on you, but I hope the majority of the responses are productive and helpful.
I forgot to mention on the survey that I really appreciate James’ work on the Kickstarters. He seems a valuable addition to the crew and its amazing he remains so affable during the stressful periods.
James has are a very particular set of skills; skills he has acquired over a very long career. Skills that make him a joy for people backing our Kickstarters. 🙂
Well played, sir. Well played.
Thanks for getting the reference!
