When Vampire: The Masquerade debuted in 1991, it looked and felt very different from other roleplaying books. The art was a big part of that, but there was also something else. Quotes. Shakespeare, Ovid, and Alan Moore all headed sections. But so did The Cure and the Indigo Girls.

Those song quotes were a big part of Vampire‘s contemporary feel. The best quotes gave new energy and a cutting edge perspective to the text. The worst… well, even those told you a lot about how the designers thought and felt about the text.

So I thought it’d be fun to go through the first edition of Masquerade and make a playlist out of the quoted songs. Here you go:
