How Much More Winter? [Monday Meeting Notes]

I am, of course, referencing Groundhog Day: that delightful US fake holiday where we look at a rodent while he comes out of his cave. If he sees his shadow, which he did today, then we have six more weeks of winter. Probably a bit more reliable than the weather predictors these days!

And yes, I know I said I was going to put real art up there next, but the graphic just made itself, thus giving me another chance to remind everyone that this is our 15th February (and Groundhog Day) in business as Onyx Path!

And there was much rejoicing.

There is also joy because today I received a message from the printer working on the Deluxe Edition of Exalted Exigents and the book has finished being printed and bound and wrapped, and they are now arranging shipping to our fulfillment shippers! We can’t be more definite as to when those shippers will start sending out backer copies of the books, but keep an eye here and on James’ Backer Updates for more news as it happens!

(Usual caveat that we are still forced by the chaotic nature of shipping and tariffs to move cautiously in terms of getting more crowdfunded books to press, but it is finally starting!)

Plus, we’re continuing to get lots and lots of projects that were Stretch Goals out to backers, as we managed to really push for last year, and even some books not even related to crowd-funding! I know, who’da thought?

We keep getting asked what and when our next crowdfunder will be, and I can confirm today that the what is actually two whats: The Delver’s Guide as well as Secrets of Kalm and Kaos for The World Below! These are essentially the Player’s Guide and the Storyguide books for TWB, and we’ll be getting a pre-launch page up really soon!

We also get asked a lot about the nature of the info contained in the Curseborne core book. It seems there are some folks who are looking for more info about the characters and the world of Curseborne, which is super to hear, but some of them also think that the openness of the very first big book for the line was some kind of mistake that we made.

Like, we spent year and years on creating this, but just plumb forgot to include tons of history and lore.

I promise you, we did not forget.

The intention of the Curseborne core book is to allow players to start playing in a setting with over 30 starting character types without feeling like they need to be experts in lots of lore. What would you, as a character, likely know about your condition, and the supernatural world you find yourself in from the start? We designed it so you would be able to play right from the start whether you are one of our long-time fans or coming fresh to the Accursed.

If you look at the books we’ve released and will be releasing, they are all ways to further build on that initial core book experience. Jumpstarts to give direct examples of how to play (with a ton of Actual Play vids and The Gentleman Gamer informative vids), the short story collection for inspiration as to living as an Accursed, and books like Seattle so that you have an actual city and its environs to both play in and use as a model for campaigns. The solo play book is there to provide a further option for playing, as are a couple of projects still under wraps.

So, the CB core is really not all the info we’re planning on building up, it was always designed to be the tip of a scary, dark, iceberg below the surface of our reality. There was just no way to put all of what we know will be fascinating and frightening lore into the first book without being the biggest book we’ve every created…and having made some pretty intimidatingly huge game books over the years (- cough- Mage 20th, Exalted 3rd -cough-), we know how hard it is for prospective players to absorb all of that!

And those big tomes already had very devoted fans willing and knowledgeable enough to dive into their many, many words! Curseborne is truly a new game line – it needs a chance to show you what it can do – so keep your eyes open all this year, I think a lot of those desires for more depth are going to be extremely satisfied!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Besides being about a scared rodent, today also celebrates Very Good Dogs: The 1925 serum run to Nome, also known as the Great Race of Mercy, was a transport of diphtheria antitoxin by dog sled relay across the US territory of Alaska by 20 mushers and about 150 sled dogs across 674 miles (1,085 km) in 5+1⁄2 days, saving the small town of Nome and the surrounding communities from a developing epidemic of diphtheria. Both the mushers and their dogs were portrayed as heroes in the newly popular medium of radio and received headline coverage in newspapers across the United States. Balto, the lead sled dog on the final stretch into Nome, became the most famous canine celebrity of the era, and his statue is a popular tourist attraction in both New York City’s Central Park and downtown Anchorage, Alaska. Togo’s team covered much of the most dangerous parts of the route and ran the farthest: Togo’s team covered 261 miles (420 km) while Balto’s team ran 55 miles (89 km).
