Well, looky there, it’s the cover for Vampire: The Requiem 2nd Edition, featuring the Blood & Smoke Strix Chronicle. As we are getting ready the new PDF and physical book PoD files, I just want to remind everyone that already purchased a PDF of Blood & Smoke: The Strix Chronicle that we will be updating the B&S listing on DriveThru and updating your B&S PDF with this new VtR 2nd Edition PDF at no cost to you.
Additionally, at 12 noon EST on Wednesday, November the 19th, we will stop selling the PoD version of Blood & Smoke: The Strix Chronicle and will be replacing it with the PoD version of VtR2. So, if for any reason you didn’t already get a B&S in physical book PoD form, you have until Wednesday at noon. After that we will be getting proofs of the PoD books, and once those are OK’d both the PDF and PoD versions of Vampire: The Requiem 2nd Edition will go live at last!
Our weekly meeting was mostly about the upcoming Wraith 20th Anniversary Edition Kickstarter (this week? maybe?) and the start of Pitch Season: that magical time of the year wherein we solicit pitches from our devoted developers and writers for projects. We’re first getting in pitches from our line developers for cWoD, nWoD, and Exalted, and then we’ll be asking those wacky writers. We also chatted about upcoming sales on DTRPG, and our con presence next year.
Lots of bits that led to talking about what currently we are thankful for in week three of our Month of Thanks:
– As per my lead-in paragraph, I’m super thankful that we are so close to getting out our first nWoD 2nd Edition, and I think Rose agrees on this one. Part of that is also being grateful that CCP was willing to re-examine the 2nd Edition idea and give us the green light for what I’ve considered for years to be a needed evolution of the lines. And we are actively working on nWoD 2nd core, Werewolf, Mage, and Promethean 2nds, and Changeling the Lost 2nd is revving up.
– I am grateful for the gang that meets every Monday to manhandle this crazy business into submission (or at least cooperation). Some employees, some consultants, some volunteers, but all pulling Onyx Path along, often by sheer force of will, a helluva lot faster and coherently than I could alone. And, in fact, a couple of them have some thanks of their own they’d like to share.
First, Eager Eddy Webb:
* Thanks for Onyx Path taking the risk on an owner/creator property like Pugmire.* Thanks for the V20 fans for continuing to show that open development doesn’t have to be a train wreck.* Thanks to Kickstarter for providing a way to give high-quality deluxe books to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get them (due to market forces).
– I also would like to thank Kickstarter in an abstract way, because it exists as a site, and a process, and without it we would certainly not be able to create the beautiful limited edition versions of our books we’ve been having so much fun with. But more specifically, I want to thank all of our Kickstarter project supporters, the newbies and the veterans, who rise up out of the darkness each time we do one and support the KS with what they can. In many cases, this has been a bumpy road, and I appreciate that so many of you have kept backing as we’ve developed more and better ways of making Kickstarter work for us.
And Maniacal Matt McElroy:
As a new Onyx Path Developer this year I’m thankful for the advice and
encouragement of experienced developers like Matthew McFarland, Justin
Achilli, Eddy Webb, and David Hill for showing me the ropes and
welcoming me to the team.I’m thankful for all of the teamwork from Rich, Mike, Rose, Ian, and
Monica (and now Lisa) for building Onyx Path each week.I’m also thankful for all the hard work of the freelance writers,
artists, and editors. Mostly, though, I’m thankful for all of the
enthusiastic energy and feedback from the fans because without them
these games wouldn’t matter at all…
– So grateful for the wealth of projects we are currently working on. All three of the WW game lines, plus the system team actively working on our new dice-pool system for Scion and Trinity. (Working name The Sardonyx System. Yes? No?) Plus Scarred Lands gave me a chance to finally publish The Gauntlet of Spiragos adventure I wrote, and Cavaliers of Mars and Pugmire are in active creative discussions. Such a variety of Good Stuff, yet all of it has that certain spark that makes a project special.
And here is Mirthful Mike Chaney:
- I’m thankful for the support of our fans in all of our publishing endeavors. Without that support we couldn’t have done some really cool books like the Deluxe Hunters Hunted II, Prestige Edition Demon the Descent (so shiny it hurts), Deluxe Anarchs Unbound, or the Deluxe Mage with Lenticular Tarot Card (and tons of other upcoming cool stuff).
- I’m thankful that I am able to devote 100% of my creative energies to Onyx Path and it’s various and expanding IPs. That has in turn given me the opportunity to design some truly awesome books (Vampire Dark Ages 20 and Mage 20) and expand the various ways we are able to deliver Onyx Path IPs. That’s a very big thanks to both Rich and all the fans.
- I’m thankful we will be revisiting the Scarred Lands. I spent my first three or four years in production working on Scarred Lands and getting to revisit it is like seeing an old friend after a decade apart.
- I’m most thankful that despite two decades of various shenanigans, I still get to work with my friends making games that people still love to play. As of today, I’m at 260+ White Wolf or Onyx Path publications and I fully intend on making that 600+ one day.
– Like the Mirthful One, I’m also thankful that in a crazy world, I get to actually have fun at work with people I actually like, making these amazing and evocative games and books, and selling them to a community that loves them just as much as I do.
– Which brings us to all of you who read and post comments on this blog. I am grateful and somewhat humbled (no, really, it could happen) by your attention and commentary. Much like our Kickstarter community, and the eagle-eyed fans who post in our advance PDF errata threads, and the Open Dev blog posters, and the folks who review our projects online, and all the community that doesn’t write much, but is out there supporting us – we couldn’t do this without you. Angry or glad, impressed or disgusted, frustrated or thrilled, you let us know what is working with our crazy ideas and which are just plain crazy. Thanks, indeed!
It’s kind of weird to ask anybody here to contribute thanks as I feel like that’s kind of asking folks to tell us how great we are, y’know? So instead please add in anything recently you’re glad we did (or didn’t do) if you have any thoughts in that direction.

REASON TO DRINK: To really appreciating the present. Because no matter where you go: there you are.
M20 is out of editing! My joy can hardly be contained.
Let it loose!
I’m guessing, what with the Tome-like nature of the book, layout (all dat sweet sweet art), and indexing there is little chance of seeing M20 drop before the new year?
At the size it is and it being the core 20th, its very hard to estimate how long the layout will take, and then there is the index creation.
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Thank you for your hours of edits, submissions, red lines, and everything else under the sun to make great products. Thank you for having a team of talented individuals who work hard and create some of the best RPGs out there. Your hard work, blood, sweat, and tears are appreciated immensely.
Also, thank you for Mage the Awakening forever 🙂
Thanks and no problem- hope you enjoy MtAwakening 2nd!
I’m grateful that I got such a great deal on the Demon kickstarter, and that soon there will be more books to distract me from the troubles of real life 🙂 (been a bit of a rough year and gaming is a very nice way to distract oneself for a little while)
And since I forgot to add that in, though it was implied, thanks for giving me something so wonderful to distract myself with.
Glad we could provide some distraction in tough times.
Wr20 finally! /froths at the mouth
You have no idea how desperately exciting this is for me especially now that I am playing in a LARP with Wraith in the 1200s.
So…are you limiting how much money we can contribute to the KS? lol /hemmorhages money
As much as you want to pledge…
Challenge Accepted…?
Silly question: Where’s the ‘Requiem’ label in the cover? It’s just ‘Vampire: The Second Edition’ from where I can see.
Odd. Now there it is, after I updated the page.
That is odd. It is on there as always with second edition below it.
Yesterday I bought the Blood and Smoke and I wonder if I’ll ever get that new book or even receive the format Blood and Smoke?
Assuming you mean the PoD version of B&S? Yes, any PoD order before noon Weds will be B&S.
Oh god I just can’t wait for mage, please have mercy on our souls and tell us how many more days do we have to suffer? just an approximation is fine please I beg you.
It’s a big book, we have no estimate on how long layout may take. Sorry!
A question concerning V20 Ghouls, is there any update on where its at? Just haven’t seen anything in a while is all.
Just what we have here. When it moves forward, we’ll move it on the Update list. Thanks!
Looking forward to it then, and got W20 Umbra – definitely something to be thankful for, kudos to all the devs involved.
I’m thankful to the return of fiction for the World of Darkness(Strix,Idigam,God-Machine and Demon Anthologies so far!)
I’m thankful for the sheer volume of high quality work Onyx Path has give us for all gamelines and how much enthusiastic, hard-working and acessible the wole team of writers, developers, artists are.
I’m also very grateful that my home city Rio de Janeiro is getting a whole book dedicated to it for Mummy(and thankful to the whole line in general, really loved Book of Deceived!)
You’re welcome!
I’m thankful for everything that Onyx Path and the gang has done in the past, present, and what will sure be a kickass future.
I’m thankful for all of the amazing deluxe books you guys have allowed me to kickstart(especially the glorious HH2).
I’m thankful that you guys are so transparent as a company.
I’m thankful you guys have stayed true to what you were, while making changes that only improve upon everything.
I’m thankful for the CWOD, the NWOD, Scarred Lands, and pretty much everything in between(Pugmire sounds fantastic).
You guys rule. Keep it coming. I’ll keep buying.
Oh yeah, I’m also thankful for RedBubble(more Hunter stuff, please). Without Red Bubble’s OP store, I wouldn’t have spent almost 200 bucks.
Oh, and more stickers/decals? I’d love some stuff for my car, computer, and random stuff.
Mirthful Mike would love to get more Hunter stuff up- when he has a second. Not sure when that’ll be as we wind up the year!
Are there any differences between the POD B&S and 2nd Ed beyond the cover? I really want the B&S cover but not at the sake of content.
oh, thank you for all the great memories past and present, stretching back to 1991. Excited for what is to come, especially Awakening 2nd Ed!
You’re welcome and thanks!
Some tweaks, and an index added for 2E, but 99% of the interior is the same.
https://theonyxpath.com/the-world-of-darkness-second-edition/
I’m thankful for WEREWOLF: THE APOCALYPSE 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION AND ALL OF ITS SOURCEBOOKS. Words fail me to describe how awesome this roleplaying game world is. IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND ENORMOUS IN ITS VARIETY.
What would make me even more grateful is a CHANGING BREED BOOK that totally focuses on CAMAZOTZ, the Were-Bats. I get chills just thinking such a book could possibly exist in the future.
I foresee being extra grateful when I finally get MAGE20 in my hands and spend weeks absorbing it.
The World of Darkness is ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!
The Camazotz get some more love in Shattered Dreams, since it delves into the Wars of Rage – and Camazotz may have had some involvement in the second war… maybe. 😉
I’ve heard rumors…maybe…
THANK YOU! The more Camazotz the better
Wating for Exalted 3ed and mage 2ed with anticipation.
my memory is a bit foggy but isnt that also the cover for the original requiem??
ah, no, i just noticed the strix on the backround
Oh, wow, I also didn’t notice that at first sigth…. creepy 🙂
Which is really interesting, as some people can’t see anything except the owl shapes. We all see different things in any given image, it seems.
I’m grateful for my partner being willing to play Mummy: the Curse after running Golden Sky Stories for her!
Always grateful for people to play with!
What’re the chances of the Wraith20 KS hitting this week?
Working on it right now, trying really hard to get all the parts together.
I want to thank you for giving us so many words and worlds to feed our imagination.
You have helped me to have fun reading books and have a lot of nice moments with friends or alone.
That should make all of you proud.
Thank you for everything EXCEPT the pain of knowing that M20 will be an amazing book but we will not know when we will have it 😉
Thanks! And it really does make the long hours and crazy work worth it when we know folks value what we’re creating. It’s a big thing. As for M20, keep checking the Updates: you’ll see it come to fruition as the stages occur.
Where do I sign up to bribe an author to pitch my ideas?
You need to cultivate a friendship with one of our writers. Buy them dinner and drinks. Knowing our people, mostly drinks. Then one day you can mention it, just do a ” By the way, I had this little idea for one of the games…”
“Knowing our people, mostly drinks.”
It’s like you know us or something. Er, I mean, I have no idea what you’re talking about! *hastily puts down the Crown & root beer* 🙂
Did you just make that up or do you really drink that? And it’s good?
I have seen Crown & Root Beer quite a few times actually. It’s amazing. For another option, you can use Ginger Ale instead of the Root Beer
I do know how to make a mean caipirinha…
I am easily flattered and swayed.
I think the thing I am most thankful for in regards to Onyx Path is the level of transparency they provide into their production process. It allows fans to have input on a “nuts and bolts” level and also lets possible buyers decide if a given book is their “cup of tea” long before it its sale.
Looks like V20 DA is going to beat M20 to release. I thought it would, but I also thought they might be closer (in release) to each other then it looks like they are going to be. Not a bad thing, both a massive books that are going to take a while to read.
Rich, you mention the NWoD Core 2nd but its not on the timeline for development. So is it in pre-first drafts at the moment? How much of the God-Machine stuff are you guys keeping? Just the rules appendix at the back? Some of the general “weird” fluff that was not directly tied to the God-Machine? Any idea on whats getting added e.g. vehicle rules, fire/falling damage rules etc?
Just wondering in general, as obviously like Requiem 2E its the only book that might have some previous work already done on it from the Chronicle book phase last year. Also because as you mention Changeling is revving up with previews on the forums, so the 2E Core really is the last great mystery of 2E at he moment.
Rose just took on developing the nWoD 2ndE project, which as you say, needs more work integrating the various rules including vehicles, etc. with a God Machine section for that default Chronicle. So a fair mix with the rules stuff from GMC being integrated into the core rules, and the setting still being as open as the original “blue book” but with the added Chronicle section.
Do you plan to do a kickstart for it?
No plans at this time.
Question….
I purchased Blood and Smoke when it first was available as a download and i also have a hard copy. Does this mean I’ll be able to get a free copy of the PDF of 2nd Edition when it is ready?
You won’t have to go get the 2ndE PDF, as I said in the first paragraph above: “I just want to remind everyone that already purchased a PDF of Blood & Smoke: The Strix Chronicle that we will be updating the B&S listing on DriveThru and updating your B&S PDF with this new VtR 2nd Edition PDF at no cost to you.”
So you will automatically get the VtR2 PDF as it replaces your B&S PDF in your DriveThru library.
Whoohoo! Sorry…needed more coffee when reading this. If you all don’t already know this, y’all are awesome. I am really digging the new writeup, artwork and the direction the WoD is going. I admit I was a bit of a naysayer until I cracked up things and got reading, now I am a fan. I am looking forward to 2nd editions of Forsaken, Awakening and Lost soon.
Great to hear! Thanks!
Will there be a VtR2 KickStarter for a Premium Edition?
We have no current plans to KS any of the 2nd Editions. But you never know…
Just had to wipe my post and start again as it appeared I was channeling some K’llasshaa entity.
Between the inane gibberish I think I wrote something along the lines of “M20 out of editing. Very cool. Can’t wait.”
It goes without saying that I’m extremely excited in regards to Mage and can’t begin to imagine how much time, love and effort has gone into it.
Anyway, I’m going to go before I’m possessed again, or even worse start to get soppy.
Thank you for bringing joy to this cranky gamer’s soul.
Thanks, we’re glad to bring joy whenever it’s possible! M20 still has a longer than normal layout period and indexing because of its size, so don’t let the entity take over yet!
I see ‘Sardonyx System’ and think ‘sardonic’. So now I’m not sure if that’s a serious suggestion or if Rich is trolling those of us without enough coffee in their veins yet.
Then again, I kinda like the name 🙂
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onyx#Varieties
So what you’re telling me is I had actually drank enough coffee this morning 😉
How much is enough, really?
Touche
Everyone has really already said everything there is to say in one way or another, but just to add another helping onto the heaping pile of love, You guys are amazing! I’m enamored with everyone’s dedication and care for quality. The level of transparency we have is something I’ve never dreamed a fan would get from the thing they love. The ability you folks have to engage the community really makes it feel like this isn’t just a consumer/producer relationship. It feels like a big extended family. I’ve always believed that these games are the best of the best and I am continually blown away by how alive and rich our hobby feels with the advent of the Onyx Path.
Thank you so much, that really does mean a lot. Very glad that you are feeling that way, as we’ve really tried to always reach out, in one form or another, to our community and keep everybody talking and playing together.
I see that World of Darkness Dark Eras core book (WoD Dark Eras) is almost at the end of development. I am so looking forward this supplement but am wondering what the estimated publication date (for the PDF and PoD) will be?
All of you at Onyx are doing a fantastic job of not only keeping the WoD alive but breathing new life and vitality in a game world that has been a fundamental part of horror RPG and LARP for over 20 years. Great job and keep it going!
Thanks! We’re still looking at having Dark Era’s Kickstarter in the beginning of the year. There’s no way to guess right now how long after we’ll be able to deliver the various formats, because we won’t know until the KS is over how many chapters the book will have, nor how big those chapters will ultimately be.
Seriously, I can not thank you enough for taking a chance and intending to bring back Changeling: The Dreaming! Back when it was canceled, no one thought there was even the slightest possibility there would be new material for it, let alone an opportunity to give it a giant, deluxe 20th anniversary edition that can stand as an equal to the juggernaut that is Vampire: The Masquerade.
We didn’t even think it was possible when we started V20, so yeah, pretty great that we can- I agree!
Don’t know if this has already been asked or answered somewhere else, but can we please have access to the raw text that came back from editing?
It would really nice to read while waiting for the pdf.
While I appreciate that you feel that way, we don’t have plans to release the raw text early in that way. Thanks!
Wraith! WRAAAITH!
TELL me that the “we won’t fix the broken stuff, it was part of the game” philosophy will be a little less predominant in Wraith prease? fewer Arcanoi that are almost guaranteed to cause you permanent injury if you dare try to use them? ahhh, who’m I kidding, I’d buy it if you shipped it hacked into the Phoenix Command rules.
Rich Dansky is looking at the 20th Anniversary Edition as more of a 3rd or Revised Edition (to use the parlance of the other lines), and will have more leeway to make changes he thinks Wraith needs.
It shall be glorious, and it shall be good.
Is there going to be a source book for the Classic World of Darkness that fills the same role that the “Hurt Locker” sourcebook does for the New World of Darkness?
We don’t have one planned yet, as there isn’t a “core” book to then expand on like in nWoD, but it is Pitch Season, so maybe somebody has it in their ideas.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the new pitches are. You guys have a great collection of creators
Thanks- I agree!
I would love to contribute to such a book, were it ever to see some traction. I’ve been saying for a while now that I would love to see something like the back of the Vampire Storyteller’s Companion a bit more modernized.
I actually had a conversation about that with David Hill the day before Hurt Locker was announced. (Which was actually pure coincidence.)
You know, as much as I love Onyx Path…I am really not sure on Wraith 20th. Not that I am not sure they will not do a kick arse job, but because the game has always been a strange place in the setting..
Well, that’s part of the challenge, certainly. How do you honor Wraith with its 20th Anniversary Edition, but also revise it in a way it never was before to allow it to have more relevance to WoD as a whole?
Yes, that is EXACTLY what I’m looking forwards to seeing! I cannot tell you how excited I am for Wraith getting the attention it so richly deserves!
I do agree, we do need a CWoD book similar to the Hurt locker or Armory as the big book of beating ass was meh. The Classic WoD also desperately needed a Tales From The 13th precinct book instead of having stuff about law enforcement scattered about every edition. It just needed 1 book like Tales, as lot of people incorporated Tales as is as it’s just a big book on police procedures..
Also I am giddy that M20 will soon be released to the backers to get their feedback from. As it’s getting there, but as a side note, y’all could use it as a bullet proof vest because of its massiveness or as a self defense weapon ! j/k
As much as I loved making 13th Precinct, it only sold OK because of the specific subject matter, so we have to bear that in mind with those sorts of books. Sometimes, there’s a way to put a couple of topics like that together for a range of subjects that might appeal to a broader audience. Or with our publishing model having shifted to online sales, a smaller PDF/PoD book might make more sense, now.
Either way, these are the things I have to look at with more specific books like 13th Precinct, or anything that gets pitched like it.
This thread brings an interesting (to me at least) question. Could certain topics appeal more to fans of one version of the World of Darkness than fans of the other?
Take 13th Precinct for example. It’s about police in a supernatural setting. The nWoD is a modular setting where the emphasis is on local going ons and every piece of the setting is presented as optional.
The cWoD has nation wide or global level supernatural organizations and conspiricies. It might be more interesting to see how police operate in a supernatural setting when they have the Camarilla, the Sabbat, the Garou Nation, Pentex, the Traditions, the Technocracy, the Hierarchy, Concordia, and the Shadow Court to contend with.
In a similar vein, it seems like a book about combat would be a very different animal for cWoD than nWoD. Hurt Locker looks like its going to explore the consequences of violence, which seems perfect for nWoD. A book like that for cWoD seems like it would be better suited going the opposite direction – show how to make fights more cinematic. How can you emulate the fight scenes in movies like The Crow, Highlander, or Underworld while keeping the rules light and fun?
I am super excited for Wraith 20th, and to see how Dansky revises it for the new edition. It’s a game I loved the first time around, barely got to play, and am looking forward to introducing to a new group of friends.
However, I’m concerned that if the Kickstarter for Wraith 20th comes too soon, I might not be able to pledge for the deluxe book that I’d like to get. The Dark Ages core book KS just finished. Staggering them further apart might be better. That’s two expensive books very close together, neither of which will arrive anytime soon. It’s hard to budget and justify, especially when Mage still hasn’t shipped.
I understand the M20 is totally on time (and doing great, I’m not asking for a rush job!), but floating the money for a big-ticket third book is a big deal. Having more space between core book KSs, and/or having shorter lead time to delivery, would make me and several others I know able to purchase more books.
Bring on the Wraith!
Wraith20 is by far the most exciting CWoD book yet!
You can take my money now please.
