3000+ Curses! [Monday Meeting Notes]

What’s that all about, you ask? Well, more than three thousand backers came together in support of Curseborne, our return to the horror genre! Friday after the campaign was over was pretty weird as I found myself going back to the page to check the progress, even though I quickly realized that it was over. We’d done it, and multiple years worth of effort and planning was done.

Well, that phase of getting Curseborne out to y’all, at least.

(And how about this new piece of Curseborne art up at the top? That’s just the start of continuing to work on this!)

Today in our Monday Meeting we started the first in a rolling series of meetings as we figure out a) how do we want to keep the conversations about Curseborne going, which leads to, or is entwined with b) what sequence are we doing the next CB projects in. Because the core book really is just the beginning. It was never ever designed to provide all the answers, just like it was never designed to provide all the power levels that PCs can rise to as the game matures.

For a), we have a few givens that are already happening: we’re speccing out the three Stretch Goal projects; Tangled Webs, the Curseborne Fiction Anthology, and the Accursed Adventure Supplement; we are assigning our creative team to monthly antagonists with Curseborne Tasty Bits, and the Gentleman Gamer videos taking deep looks at the Curseborne Families are continuing thanks to Matthew Dawkins!

People are already reaching out to license CB in various ways, so we have to field and process them. Which is really delightful as we love it when folks outside Onyx get that excited about our new thing!

For b), well that’s what our team meeting tomorrow is for!

But now, here’s some Curse-driven KS thoughts from the Monday Meeting crew:

Danielle:

My favorite thing about the Curseborne Kickstarter was seeing new folks show up and all the people who were there from the start welcoming them and giving them the rundown as if this game had been in the world forever, rather than it being completely brand new. The way everyone has taken to it, and started to dive into it so quickly is both thrilling and heartening. Here’s to a long run of a really great time!

Travis:

I’ve had the opportunity to participate in several Curseborne actual plays as producer, player, or Storyguide, which has given me the chance to see several players engage with the setting for the first time. Seeing their interest and enjoyment as they took their first steps into the world of Curseborne has been an amazing experience. It’s been especially gratifying as a player to be able to step into a brand new world and explore a novel character type when I played a Primal of the Eight Hands over at Dork Tales last weekend for Extra Life! I can’t wait to further explore the world of Curseborne!

Eddy:

My favourite thing about Curseborne has been watching people really get some of the new things we’re doing with the game. It’s really great to see people excited out of the gate, of course, but watching it dawn on people some of the really cool with, say, curse dice or how families are framed, is so heartening.

Dixie:

Honestly for me the best part of the Curseborne Kickstarter was getting to see everyone finally getting to see the team’s hard work! So many people worked really hard on this book, and I’m glad the backers were finally able to see all the love that went into it. It’s a really special project for us at Onyx Path, and it’s been gratifying to hear so many kind words about it over the past month. Thanks, everyone!

Matthew:

Selfishly, my favourite thing to do with the Curseborne Kickstarter was having a real renaissance of video production over on my YouTube channel – where I first started, really, on this crazy RPG journey – to make the Gentleman’s Guide to the Accursed and a whole load of inspirational media videos, setting videos, and “how to” videos, among many others. It’s been wonderful to speak to subscribers, new fans of the game, and old backers of my channel, and get everyone nicely enthused about what Onyx Path have coming next!

Mirthful Mike and RichT:

The Mirthful One and I were trying to do something a bit different with the Curseborne art for the KS, and judging by the commentary, it seems like almost a year of reaching out to a wide variety of artists worked really well! Mike notes that he is also really jazzed for how well the slipcase edition came together, and that it looks cool even just as a mock-up. And it wasn’t just us: Danielle and Dixie and Maria Cabardo lent their expertise and gave us input all along, everything from the Lineage colors, to what fashions Izzy should wear, to a delightful back and forth collaboration I had with Dixie in creating and then scrawling the Primal symbols. I also had a great deal of fun collaborating with Travis on both the early teaser and later videos – which were a bunch of my ideas and a huge amount of his film-making ability and hard work! It’s a team effort all across the board and a lot of talented folk really pushed their skills to the limits to bring this KS together!

A special shout-out to our KS Concierge, James Bell, who did a superb job of pulling (and holding) the KS campaign together from start to finish!

More Curses, Less Space:

After wrapping up the Curseborne KS, Halloween, and, well, life – there’s not a lot in our progress section (below) this week. Although the PDF and PoD versions of Sidereals do go live on Weds! So that’s great news!

After a bunch of meetings this week, Dixie and I head over to York, PA for the Bodhana Group‘s Save Against Fear Convention from Thursday until over the weekend! Of course, we’ll be talking up Branch Riders – which I hope to sit in on a few games of – both to gamers and to the therapists who come each year to discuss Bodhana‘s innovative and effective therapy processes using tabletop gaming. As always, we are fully in support of said efforts, and remember: this con is for charity and your tickets help to support Bodhana.

Jack Berkenstock, the Bodhana Group‘s fearless leader also posted this:

Also, if you are local to the York, PA area, The Bodhana Group will be hosting its 14th Annual Save Against Fear Convention at the York Expo Center and we are celebrating the success of Branch Riders with multiple sessions throughout the weekend as well as a special raffle for people who late pledge back during that weekend. One lucky new Branch Rider will receive this custom book themed dice tower! Badges are still available at the Save Against Fear website!

  1. the long wait is over, the stars have finally aligned and Yu-Shan enters the third edition.

Special thanks to the Onyx Path Censors who broke through the celestial bureaucracy to finally bring this wonderful book to life.
