When Is a curse Not a Curse? [Monday Meeting Notes]

I dunno, Babs…but I do know this:

Our Kickstarter for our highly anticipated return to horror gaming, Curseborne, is still hotly hitting Stretch Goals and is at almost 500% above our initial funding goal with more than half of the campaign still to go!

Thanks to so many of you who have supported this effort and have given the Curseborne line such a super way to get started! That’s right: your contributions and spreading the word are all about getting folks onboard for the main book, sure, but they also tell us that there’s an audience out there who are most probably interested in what comes next

And since we have always planned on CB ultimately growing into a game line that has more breadth AND more depth than anything we’ve worked on previously in the horror genre, we are thrilled that all indications are that you too would love to see that happen! (Of course, CB itself sets the stage at the same time it enables a very rich and diverse panoply of stories to tell and play through, but it doesn’t have 35 years of releases to draw from…yet! Give us a wee bit of time on that.)

In fact, while I know that Actual Play vids or podcasts aren’t everybody’s cup of ichor, if you check out the sheer variety of storylines that our AP friends are running down there in the Media section below, you might notice that there is a super-wide range of kinds of horror stories that folks are already playing!

On our Twitch, just this week, we have six different broadcasts concerning Curseborne: Tuesday the 14th at 7am Eastern is an AP, “In Between Places“, followed that same day at 8pm Eastern with the “Beginner’s Guide to Curseborne“. Then Wednesday at 8pm Eastern is the “Family Feud” AP, with another AP, “The Hills, The Eyes“, at 8:30pm Eastern on Thursday. Friday is a day of rest, and then Saturday, we have Curseborne lead dev Danielle Lauzon on Phil Keeling’s “Meet Your Makers” at 2pm Eastern. Finally, coming back around to next Monday, we have the second part of the “Last Train” AP at 7pm Eastern. Phew!

(Speaking of which, did you catch Danielle extolling Curseborne on Forbes‘ online site? Google it, it’s worth the read as D gives the insider’s inside scoop on Curseborne and its creation!)

For folks who don’t do the vid thing, just a note that we are providing audio versions of some of the AP videos on the Onyx Pathcast for your listening pleasure. In fact, this Friday’s Pathcast is the second part of the Curtain Call AP where you can hear Mathew Dawkins’ dulcet tones as he guides a group of amazing players including wrestling stars Athena Palmer and Nyla Rose to the story’s ultimate…conclusion?

Something I’m really thrilled about is that Matthew is also creating more The Gentleman Gamer videos for his YouTube site (which he graciously allows us to post, too). Way back when I first met Matthew, I was impressed by his thoughts on the original Vampire game as he expressed them in the Gentleman vids, and it is great that he’s chosen to now do the same for Curseborne! He’s starting off a series of them where the GG goes through Family by Family with the Iscariots Family of The Hungry:

Matthew Dawkins here! This week I started the first of The Gentleman’s Guide to the Accursed with a video on the Iscariots Family. These videos are being made in the style of my popular Gentleman’s Guide to Vampires and PENTEX Guide to Werewolves series, and like them, this one will benefit from viewer interaction and support! If there’s a Family you want to see me focus on in these videos (only 30 more Families to go!) comment here or on the video so I can see which groups appeal to you!

Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/HsDyM0gRg7k

But back to the Kickstarter for a moment: last week I posted some of the FAQ that James has gotten so far over there on the KS, and here’s another one that popped up since then:

Was generative AI used in any of the artwork?
Onyx Path doesn’t allow AI usage in any of our artwork.

In case you wondered.

Also, Eddy has something to say about our process in terms of getting your thoughts and concerns to the actual creators of Curseborne:

With the campaign running, we have to focus our attention in a lot of other places, so please send any thoughts, concerns, or playtest data to the feedback form you’ll find once you back the campaign. We love how much people are excited about the game and their thoughts about it, but it’s exhausting to stay on top of. So please, if you don’t want to have your thoughts lost in the noise (and to save our collective sanity), use the feedback form. Thanks!

This is actually really important for us as we work on finishing up the book once the KS is over – we want to pay heed to your thoughts, but there’s just no way our team can hunt down each and every venue that you might personally prefer to express them in. We’ve tried to parse through the KS Comments in past campaigns, and it is just an enormous drain on time and resources, which is why we’ve been using the Feedback Form for the past several years now.

It’s the best way that our particular team has found to amass your scintillating and helpful thoughts, and please be sure to use it to help us, help you, to help us!

PLOP

Why that subhead? I have no idea, it was what was up on the screen when I signed into our Monday Meeting today!

But from that ploppy MM, we get these notes:

Some folks have been asking, and here’s a quick note to let you know that Scion Demigod on Roll20 looks like it’s coming soon. (TM symbol assumed.)

Coming soon on Roll20, in conjunction with the Halloween Sale on DTRPG that’s also coming but not yet here, will be a sale discount on all They Came From! gaming items. So if you been wanting to get more fun into your online gaming, this is a great chance to try out the games that generally disturb the neighbors during live convention gaming!

In the world of atoms, not pixels, we’ll have Onyx Path folks including the indefatigable Travis Legge running games this week at Game Hole Con, and they’ll not only run you through Curseborne and other games but have a few physical handouts you might enjoy!

Other con news: the Dead Gamers Society are running some of our games (including Curseborne) at Something Wicked This Way Con in L.A. at the end of the month.

https://www.deadgamers.club/schedule/something-wicked-this-way-con-2024

Also in the real world – and I probably should have put this above the second headline, but whatever: if you have a favorite Friendly Local Game Store, it would be really helpful to us, and I think would help them, if you could let them know that we have three different Retailer Reward tiers available in the Curseborne KS campaign. Regular book, Deluxe, and Slipcase versions, are all available with special retailers-only rewards – and we’d hate to have them miss out on special savings!

Finally, here’s a note that our second Community Survey went out last week, this time for the Trinity Continuum! Let us know what you like or don’t so far, what you’d like to see for the line in the future, if you want to see us move to the Storypath Ultra rules, should Divis Mal still have arms, you name it! We want to hear from you, so here’s the link!

https://tinyurl.com/mpzs3hjv

Thanks to everybody who filled out the Scion Community Survey, and we’re compiling those responses and reviewing them even as I write this. We’re glad so many of you enjoy how we’ve been handling the Scion 2e line so far! Always great to get that kind of general response, even if a lot of you have wildly different ideas of what else we should do!

It’s really helpful to hear from y’all in such a structure that let’s us identify specific topics easily, as there is a massive amount of ideas and creativity in our hobby in general, and that’s like x1000 for those who love our:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

In the US today, on a state and federal level we are celebrating a holiday called Indigenous Peoples’ Day and/or Columbus Day. Our states and the fed are not in agreement as to what it is called, but a lot of people – mostly government employees – have off work today. Which tells you, oddly, a fair bit about the US right now. But, it is also the birthday of Jennell Jaquays, an artist, writer, and game designer who was one of the first TTRPG creators to successfully jump into the computer game biz right when it was starting. Jennell’s official bio says: Her notable works include the Dungeons & Dragons modules Dark Tower and Caverns of Thracia for Judges Guild; the development and design of conversions on games such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong for Coleco’s home arcade video game system; and more recent design work, including the Age of Empires series, Quake II, and Quake III Arena. Jennell and I first worked together as art director and illustrator respectively, but then she was hired into the WoD MMO project and for half a year we shared an office and tried to keep the project going (along with several other computer game veterans), and while the project burst apart, I consider the insights and game design thinking that we shared during that time to be one of the highlights of that project. She was awesome, we miss her, and here’s hoping she’s gaming like crazy in whatever higher plane she ascended to!

  1. Can’t wait for Alchemicals. Bring on the gritty noir stories of vengeance and retribution in back alleys and slums of Nexus, as a soulsteel caste private investigator delivers grim justice for the people of his community.
