Magickal Kickstarter Fulfillment Time! [Monday Meeting Notes]

IMG_1405

This week, my blog portion (you know, the part you don’t stop at until after you read the project updates!) is going to be a bit shorter than normal. I’ll try and get something to update it out Friday-ish.

This is because we shipped the two Deluxe versions of Mage 20th Anniversary Edition (see the pic above) last week, and boy are my arms tired.

Not really, but my brain does hurt a bit. See, we at Onyx Path don’t actually ship the books, but I do prepare the info for the shippers and then answer and/or forward backer concerns and issues as they come in. So far, we have had six incidents where the package was delivered but the backer didn’t realize it until they asked around, five instances where the shipper didn’t include the M20 Screen, four times the backer realized after the book shipped that they had moved but had never sent us an address change, three times the shipment couldn’t be delivered because of issues with the shipping service, two books damaged pre-shipping, and one purple book without gilding at all (what?).

And eleventy billion backers wanting to know things about their package en route, or where their tracking emails were, or whether we could hold the package because the person they got the book for is at home this week and they need it to come when they are not there in order to keep it a surprise. (True story!)

All of which are important concerns for each person, but which kind of send me into a Hawkeye Pierce mode of triaging which messages I have to answer now and which can wait. So, sorry if you sent me a note I haven’t yet gotten back to you on, but I will try and respond as soon as possible since this next week we continue triage as the later US and Canadian and other International packages make their way towards everybody.

Thanks to everybody who commented positively about the packaging and how beautiful the books and Screen are! Makes my bleary eyes happy to read those sorts of messages.

You’ll note that our art peeks this week are all from the upcoming Scarred Lands Player’s Guide that our partner in SL goodness, Stew Wieck, ran our Kickstarter for in January. Mirthful Mike tossed me a few pics that we thought showed different pieces of art than seen previously, and which continue to come in as the book is pulled together.

Just indicative of ALL THE PROJECTS we are working on and especially some of the bigger books you can see in the Updates below.

Lots of ship outs coming up for me with Deluxe V20 Lore of the Clans headed to the shipper, the Prestige Beast: the Primordial and Deluxe Exalted Third Editions getting traditional printing files prepped, and Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras PDFs going to backers this week!

Tired, but a good kind of tired, like they say.

  1. ‘Eleventy-billion’ is a LOT of Kickstarter messages, but having seen all of your offerings so far, I’m not at all surprised. It’s a mark of a job well-done, I say!

More importantly, though, I’m super-mad-happy-chuffed for the Beast: the Primordial PoD version! I have the advance PDF, but I need the physical book to page through and hold and sleep with and… um, you know? Stuff. πŸ˜›

  2. Got my physical copies of CofD core, DSG, and the new Conditions* deck. Patiently awaiting my copy of Beast. I love the Numina and Dread Power Cards, very useful. Maybe someday Tilt Cards?

Does this mean the backer pdfs should be updating soon?

  4. Oh yay Changeling moving to second draft! I had a curious question, what are the projected page/word counts for Tome of Secrets and Lore of the Bloodlines? I was trying to keep track because I was very interested in both of those texts.

Im still crossing my fingers on the Backerkit for Wraith.

    Reply
    • Wondering why you need the projected page/word counts?

Won’t be doing a BackerKit for Wraith, I don’t think, but maybe one for Changeling20 since I haven’t sent out a Backer Survey for it yet.

      Reply
    • I mean I’d love to see the page counts for those books just out of curiosity. You’ve shared it for some future texts like Victorian Mage, or Book of Secrets, but not others. Not the end of the world if you’d rather keep some of those details close to the chest, but it is in a geeks nature to see what the scope of their upcoming goodies are.

      Reply
      • We gave _estimates_ for the Stretch Goal write-ups, that’s all. Mage 2nd, for instance, will be a bigger book like VtR2 logically.

        Reply
        • I think part of the curiosity is the Vampire Dark Ages and Lore of the Clans kickstarters didn’t include word count estimates for the stretch goals as you indicate here. Which I thought was kind of weird at the time, but it was more of the curiosity. Kickstarters before and since then have, but not those two. So I think it’s just geeky curiosity being piqued by knowing that about say Changeling, Mage and Wraith stretch goals, but not those two.

I know for me I wouldn’t want anything really specific, but I’d love the level of detail in like the Wraith kickstarter. Just something like each bloodline is going to get 5k or 10k words or whatever. I just checked that kickstarter to make sure I didn’t miss something. If I am not reading the right part of that page a quick pointer to the already posted data would definitely be good enough.

          Reply
          • Sorry, you are going to have to have your fan curiosity unsatisfied by me. ? Not enough hours in the day to spend digging up info for everybody’s curiosity. But raise the question in the forums, I’m sure somebody out there has scoped out what they expect the books will come in at.

          • Shrugs. Given that I’ve seen other devs comment here as well and they may easily know it off the top of their heads it was more of a hey it doesn’t hurt to ask kind of question. I certainly didn’t assume you’d respond personally or take any extra time and I doubt the original poster thought that either, but if it wasn’t a quick kinda thing I also didn’t figure you’d worry about responding. Sorry if asking was a problem.

Unless there’s public info available that I’m not aware of any responses in the forums would probably just be speculation. So I’ll just assume it’s a doesn’t hurt to ask because worst case scenario is one ends up where one started and that’s where we are. It’s not a big deal.

          • Not a problem, easy enough to respond. The gist of your previous message was that you’ve dug around and not found the info on the KS pages, and in order to respond I would need to also dig through the KSs and find for you where we actually responded to those questions. And that part I don’t have time for, buuuut other posters on the forums might have done that for you already. Frex, I know we responded multiple times to how long the Bloodlines might be, and you could count how many made it in to the Lore of the Bloodlines book and figure a close page count – which we couldn’t do on the KS because the Stretch Goals added Bloodlines which added page count. It was undetermined as a total until the KS was over and no more Stretch Goals could be added.

          • Ok, I’ll peek at the forums. For the bloodlines I didn’t figure exact page count would be available without some math work that would probably take more time than it’s worth. For both Dark Ages and Bloodlines I personally would more just be curious about word count per stretch goal (assuming they are roughly similar). I’ll see if I can drum that up on the forums.

  5. I got my Mage 20 book on Thursday with no problem. I’ve not had any problems with DriveThruRPG or the Kickstarters. While it’s obvious things happen (aside from being late), they fortunately seem to be in the minority. Though I’m sure that doesn’t help if you’re IN that minority.

Really glad to hear about Dark Eras and Beast, but especially Dark Eras and the Pack! Woo! It hasn’t moved but we got a big entry from Stew and hopefully will get another one and also hopefully pdfs will be soon woooooo!

  6. Mage: the Awakening 2e in proofing!? It can’t be. I refuse to believe it! Almost certainly the occurance of this obvious impossibility is going to trigger some sort of Paradox manifestation; and we’ll find it back in editing next week.
I kid of course. Very excited for it.

    Reply
  7. We reeeaaly want beast out Wednesday to. I have fund ready to purchase.

Can you give us an idea in the Mage 2e page count?

    Reply
      • I’m glad. I hope it comes out before I have to go to work tomorrow.

Mage 1ea had 396 pages. I’m just really hoping it gets all the space it needs. This is the game that got me into nwod. It holds a special place.

        Reply
        • Well, of course it does. Yet page count is no indication of quality in and of itself. Nor does page count somehow equal how valued a game is.

          Reply
          • I suppose that’s one way to look at it. But. Check it out.

I wasn’t really a fan of 1e werewolf or vampire.
But 2e Wrewolf and vampire. While I wont really run the games. The books were everything 1e needed. They were gold. I even found myself humouring a werewolf game.
I’m confident that Mage won’t disappoint.
So since it’s a game that needs just a little more on the way content in a single book. I’m just hoping it gets it.
Plus page count is sort of a way to extrapolate cost.
If it’s the size of vampire 2e i have an idea to have 40 to the side for a standard copy. If it’s like demon. Tag an extra ten on their and decent shipping Is another 17 -25.
So page count at this point just is a way to give me a rough idea what I need set to the side so I can buy the book day of as soon as I get my email.

  14. Really happy to see the progress on Black Hand, Mage 2e, and Beast!! One question: will we have to wait very long before Dark Eras pdf is available to non-backers (unfortunately for me, both Dark Eras and Beast KSs came out when I was very low on that good ol’ disposable income!)?

    Reply
  15. I received my two copies of M20 today and my screen.
Absolutely blown away by the sheer quality of this book, and boy is there a lot of book!
A million and one thanks to Satyros Phil Brucato, Bill Bridges, Rich Thomas and everyone else involved.

    One more thing.
    That packaging.
I’m sure that stuff could have survived a small thermonuclear device.
I want to shake the hand of whomever came up with that.
From now on I will demand all my orders are protected so well. I don’t care if the pizza delivery guy can’t fit it on his bike.

    Reply
    • The protection was the shipper’s idea and came about because the huge weight of M20 meant we were catapulted into only being able to use certain kinds of shipping and at that cost we had more options as to packaging. Nobody wanted any damaged books for a book as gorgeous as M20, and reshipping for any reason is wicked costly. Smaller, less ornate books from future KSs will have different packaging options we’ll consider.

      Reply
      • I would also like to add a “ditto” to what Andreas said above. I got home on Thursday to find my M20 box sitting on the porch in wet snow. Thankfully it was well packaged and totally unharmed. Gotta love Wisconsin in March. And gotta love the extra mile when it comes to packaging. Also, as an extra bonus, the cats are still playing with the packaging.

  20. Just to clarify, with Beast final PoD being available this week, does that mean that deluxe versions will be shipping before long or is there still a lengthy process on that?

    Reply
    • Now we move into the traditional printing process, prepping our files for them based on the PoD printer files, and adjusting for traditional printing presses. We’ll review their proofs, and they’ll print and bind and ship to our shipper. At least a couple of months.

      Reply
  21. “Ex 3 core book – From RichT: Waiting for PoD proofs to be orderable.”
So the final is with the printer and the printer is running test proofs to look for error’s in the final physical copies?

    Reply
    • Essentially yes, the PoD printer runs checks on our PoD files after we upload them. If they OK them, we are notified that we can (must) order a PoD poof, which is really just a copy of the PoD version of the book. So I was waiting for that notification and then ordered both Standard and Premium color PoD proofs. No idea when they will get here, though.

I am not being hyperbolic when I say it took me upwards of a minute of careful opening and unwrapping to get to the actual book to make sure I didn’t hurt anything. Turned out it was so well wrapped I had no reason to worry about accidentally hurting the book cutting open the box. Shipping company did good work.

I wasn’t worried about it, since I figured things were still in the process of going out the door. But this update makes it sound like everything has already shipped? Did mine get lost in the shuffle somewhere? (Let me know if you want me to email and/or send a KS message with more info.)

I don’t want to nag, I’m just really excited to get my hands on my copy!

    • I’m sure it’s fine, and if it’s not we’ll deal with the issue later on. I don’t actually send out or have access to those emails- that’s the shipping company and they tell me they are double checking that all the packages went.

      Reply
      • I’ll trust them, then. I’ll keep waiting for now (and refreshing… and refreshing…). At what point (if any) should I be concerned, though? Or will the shipping company notify you if there’s some problem?

        Reply
        • They may, if the shipment gets flagged by the service. Usually we wait a couple of weeks and see who got their stuff later than expected because of glitches in the process and then who didn’t get them at all. In general, you want to ask about things using the Contact Me messaging on the KS page so we can access your KS files. Thanks!
