Now Available: Exalted Third Edition!!!

Exalted3e
Ex3 CoverIt’s here! Now available in PDF and print at DriveThruRPG:

This is the tale of a forgotten age before the seas were bent, when the world was flat and floated atop a sea of chaos. This is the tale of a decadent empire raised up on the bones of the fallen Golden Age, whose splendor it faintly echoed but could not match. This is a tale of primal frontiers, of the restless dead, of jeweled cities ruled openly by spirits in defiance of Heaven’s law. This is a tale of glorious heroes blessed by the gods, and of their passions and the wars they waged in the final era of legends.

This is your tale. This is Exalted. What legends will they tell of your deeds?

Exalted 3rd Edition depicts both a revitalized and expanded Creation, and the triumphant return of the Solar Exalted—but whether their rebirth will herald the salvation or destruction of the world, none can say. The system redesign takes the best parts of the previous editions and streamlines the mechanics for maximum playability.

Exalted 3rd Edition includes:

  • New Fiction – Read a new tale by original Exalted developer and author Geoff Grabowski.
  • New Artwork – See the Realm in a new light with stunning artwork by both new and classic Exalted artists working under the direction of Maria Cabardo.
  • Expanded Locales – Expand your campaigns with a detailed overview of the sprawling and decadent Second Age of Man. In addition to classic locales such as Chiaroscuro and Nexus, find many new locations not detailed in previous editions, from the treacherous intrigues of Port Calin to the proud warriors of the frigid plains and forests of Medo, held in check only by the iron hand of the Realm.
  • Intrigue and Mystery – Discover a revitalized Realm, still standing at the brink of civil war, but more dangerous than ever before; and the Lunar dominions which harry its borders, seeking redress for ancient crimes while pursuing modern ambitions.
  • Expanded Character Creation – Create and play Solar Exalted characters and compelling mortal heroes with more information and fleshed out details.
  • Combat System – Fight with a new cinematic combat engine, primed to deliver dynamic, exciting, and easily resolved battles between heroes, gods, and armies.
  • Charms – Explore a vibrant new Charm set encompassing both classic Solar powers from previous editions and all-new powers to shift the course of Creation.
  • …and much, much more!

    • I have purchased several basic and premium books I can say that when I know I’m getting a Deluxe from a kickstarter I tend to purchase a Basic because that’s really the copy to throw around the gaming table. They are very attractive. They do not look nearly as good as the Premium printings though. The Premiums are also on much thicker paper, so for really big books like Exalted or the M20 premiums that some of my players purchased for our Mage game the book size gets a little cumbersome. If you are getting a Deluxe printing in a few months when that goes out I’d really recommend a Basic just based on my experience, but I know people who only buy the higher end printings because they want the art to always look it’s best. For whatever that feedback is worth.

  2. Congrats on getting a long term project completed (notwithstanding physical deluxe copies being sent out I guess). It looks good, and you must be proud and relived at finally seeing it out there!

    • YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

But yes, people may have noticed we’re getting a general backlog cleared out. Black Hand, Beast, Exalted 3e, the upcoming Mage 2e… a lot of projects which have been in the works for a while are getting pushed out the door. It’s wonderful.

      • From the looks of Art Direction there’s going to be another great purge coming later this year, although given how sparse layout is I’m expecting a bit of a breather to hit in a month or two before that happens. I’m honestly kind of ok with that. I’ve been picking up more books than I can really parse lately.

  3. For Someone who never played Exalted before what are the top 5 reasons I should start playing it. What makes it special, I know it is just because of other comments I have seen posted.

    • these are the order of how I think of them, not in the order of importance.

      1) who DOESN’T want to have a game that requires you to have 30 or so 10 sided dice?

      2) huge vibrant world, where if you choose, you can carve out your own kingdom.

      3) you want to play an RPG where you are a flawed hero out of Greek mythology.

      4) channel the power of the gods to perform miraculous and heroic actions such as single handedly defeating an entire army (or drinking them under the table).

      5) where many RPGs have power creep (where each new book introduces new and bigger powers) Exalted (at least the earlier editions) have awesomeness creep.

      how is that?

      • oh, 6) there is a lost kingdom that was founded by super intelligent dinosaurs!

        7) it is a fantasy RPG where all the characters are magic powered martial arts wielding superheros.

    • 1) It’s an original, in depth setting that harks back in some ways to the great settings of the 70s – like Glorantha or Tekumel. A lot of RPGs these days tend to go for generic systems or licensed IPs, but Exalted is an example of the art of original setting design.

      2) It has a lot of funky, engaging magic systems and types of special maneuvers in combat wherein you can develop cool signature combos.

      3) The characters are godlike in their status and abilities. The power level is significantly higher than other fantasy games.

      4) The game and setting deliberately avoid western fantasy tropes (i.e. Tolkienesque) and takes inspiration from other sources, like Japanese Anime for example. It’s all a bit different.

      5) The book itself has the highest level of full colour, jaw dropping production standards in art and layout. It looks gorgeous if nothing else!

      • Your comparing it to Glorantha is definitely a selling point with me. I played a lot of RuneQuest back in the day. One of my PC’s could title their Autobiography (for the earlier part of their life when they were still a guy) “I was a Teenage Lunar Spy”

Definitely have to put the pdf on my list, don’t think I have room on my shelf for a printed copy, and though I like physical books, more and more of my Game collection is PDFs because of the convenience.

  4. In the backer section why does each section have several alphabetic lists of backers. Kinda hard finding a name when even though you know they are in the Exalted backer section, you have to go through three separate lists of backers.

    • Don’t listen to him. We need Abyssals first! Or second, as Dragon Blooded will be first… So someone is going to be second, then third, and Abyssals should be there, right? I think I just confusenated myself.

Regardless, I DO agree with the part about the book being awesome! It is a fact.

Now get on that Abyssals thing, please, with salt and sand on top? Huh, when I put it THAT way, the request for the Lunars supplement sounds a lot more enticing… Oh well, I’ve confidence that the line shall continue to be AWESOME! 🙂

  6. The Charm chapter is SOOOOOO dense, and I find myself missing charm trees a bit.

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I would by an additional POD book that was just the charm chapter with old school tree’s inserted.
