Jumping to Mars [Monday Meeting Notes]

Cavs of Mars

Ooookaaaay!

We’re back from our various vacation moments, which were much-needed and awesome, and while the mega-excitement of Grande Masquerade 2016 in New Orleans over the Labor Day weekend is building, the business of Onyx Path is to get caught up on all the items coming out of this last month.

One of these is the Cavaliers of Mars Jumpstart, which Rollickin’ Rose Bailey pulled together with Mirthful Mike these last few weeks, and which will be available on DriveThruRPG.com this Wednesday as an Advance PDF.

But Rich, I think I hear you ask although really my ears could be playing tricks on me, what IS a Jumpstart anyway?

It’s a booklet designed to enable you to get started quickly playing an abbreviated version of the game. We would have called it a “Quickstart” a few years ago, but that term hasΒ become loaded up with some expectations based on the previous years of making them that kind of force these Jumpstarts to be put together a certain way that doesn’t work for all game lines.

We need to be able to allow each line to shine by emphasizing what we think makes the game line special and interesting to play, so we renamed this sort of booklet to give the whole idea a fresh start.

So check it out and get your pulse racing and your blood boiling as you trade bon-mots and flashing blades on Mars!

Besides Rollickin’ Rose catching up on her Cavaliers of Mars and Vampire: the Requiem 2nd projects, I’ll be pulling together the upcoming Scion 2nd Edition Kickstarter (it looks more like early September now, though), getting the Beckett’s Diary KS BackerKit page up and out, and sending out PDFs of Promethean 2nd Edition to our Beast Kickstarter backers who pledged at the right levels for it.

Mirthful Mike will be able to pay undivided attention to the various books that are in various stages that the Mage 2nd Edition errata and Promethean 2nd layout processes (not to mention all the incredible and fun stuff the Mirthful One pulled together for Gen Con) slowed down.

As a group, we’ll be reviewing the many, many emails/resumes that were sent in inquiring about the Extended Media freelance position this week, and hope to reach out to a few folks for further discussion before the month is out.

Beyond those direct projects, there are so many possible tasty items coming out of Gen Con that we’re discussing, and which I hope to be able to reveal in the months to come. Some of those are internal organization and pay rate increases, and some are cool alliances and projects with other companies, and some are new projects for existing lines that just emerged right before our eyes as we talked late into the night.

And some are changes based on the critiques given by ourselves to ourselves at the Onyx Path Summit we held Saturday night at our hotel after a delicious meal at Harry and Izzy’s. The main Onyx team were all there, and we reviewed the past year’s triumphs, tragedies, and frustrations with what I think was a critical yet constructive eye towards the future of Onyx Path.

Because I want our team to always be willing to lay it all on the line and speak their minds without concern that things will be repeated, I’m not going to go into more detail here, but rest assured that you’ll be able to trace many of the upcoming positive changes this whole next year to this year’s Summit.

Any negative changes are all Eddy Webb’s fault.

And with that, I am out of here! (And back to working on the stuff mentioned above).

BLURBS!

KICKSTARTER!

We’re looking at our next KS campaign being for Scion 2nd Edition in late August/early September. Neall and I sat down at Gen Con to discuss the last details, in fact. Neall’s working on his voice-overs for the Kickstarter videos even as I write this. More news when we have it!

  1. At some point this weekend, my brain decided that the Faith of the Seven was criminally unexplored, and that A Song of Ice and Fire was the perfect setting for a medieval Scion game. Then I started thinking about Geasa and the Red Wedding. It was weird.

Really looking forward to trying to make it happen though.

  2. I was sad to see that the Bunyip tribebook for W20 hasn’t been mentioned again since last year’s Gencon brochure, including in this most recent one. Does that mean all the recent shifts and such have wiped it off the table? I was a huge fan of the White Howlers book, and was excited for the possibility of another old-style tribebook for an extinct tribe.

  3. Make this monday even greater and give us dragon-blooded spoilers. Onyx path should consider upload more videos on their youtube channel too. How about dragon-blooded exalted videos? (Puppy face).

    • Spoilers are up to the Devs. We will be posting more vids in the year to come, that was one of the items we discussed. Thanks!

  4. I like jumpstart better than quickstart but when capitalized it makes me think Kickstart. Perhaps something with the word dawn?

Anyways, I like Werewolf the Forsaken a lot, and really enjoyed the Pack book (currently at gold).

Are we going to get any announcements for further books in this line? I’m worrying that the silence on the matter means something businessy is happening behind the scenes that’s going to be disappointing to fans in the future πŸ™

    • Not every CofD line will get a book every year between GenCons, we simply don’t have the space to give all 11 lines that many books. But WtF2 will be getting more Dark Eras, and most likely will get more DEs in Dark Eras 2.

  5. What’s old is new again! “Jump Start Kit” was the name for the Stormrider introductory product for Ars Magica that Lion Rampant put out around 1990 (and White Wolf reissued in 1991).

Apparently, at that point you were Richard “Did I really draw a Japanimation Marge Simpson on Nicole’s thing?” Thomas.

  6. I was looking over the Ex3 KS, to refresh my (and a friend’s) memory on whether or not there was a tier that included Miracles of the Solar Exalted without having to come up with a Charm*, and I rediscovered a few stretch goal items whose status I’ve not seen any updates on lately. What ever happened to Jess Hartley’s novel about Novia Claro, or to the book of ready-made characters? Are those still in the pre-first-draft stage? What about the bookmarks featuring MelUran chibi art of the new signature Circle? Dare I hope they’ll be shipping with our deluxes and maps?

(* I’d forgotten it was an add-on, which fits because we both forgot to add it on.)

    • I’m also interested to know about the status of the essay collection. I think a critical analysis of the Exalted universe and game line was a great idea for an introduction of a revolutionary new edition in the line.

      Reply
    • As those projects get to the first draft stage they will be added to the list. Bookmarks are getting easy to go to press, we sent out the PDF preview version a while ago, andw I’ll ship with the books. Not sure what you mean by the sample circle, except that those are the Exalted Ready Made Characters.

I mean the new Solar signature characters (Perfect Soul and company). If they’re going to be the RMCs, great! If not, still a good deal!

  13. It would be REALLY awesome if we could an 2nd Edition update for Mummy similar to Hunter: Mortal Remains. I imagine that a full 2nd Edition for the game is years away, at this point. It would just be nice to have some rules consistency when trying to incorporate Mummy in a crossover type scenario.

    Reply
    • Yeah. If Mummy 2e were to be announced at nect Gen Con, it woukd then take another year or two from there to come out, and I really don’t want to wait through the end if the 2010s for my favorite game to get updated.

  15. If we’re getting a Dark Eras 2 is there any chance of some more time period piece love for Old World of Darkness. I would kill for some Dust Bowl Changeling(Or at least a good book on the Resurgence), and a more comprehensive development of the Great War for Wraith. I know Victorian Mage is still on the docket, and I’m thrilled about that. I’d just love to see more development in that direction for the other game lines.

    Reply
    • I’d also love a historical Changeling book, and the 1970s (immediately in the wake of the moon landing and the return of the Sidhe) would be wonderful and terrifying.

      Reply
    • There are some REALLY great ideas here! I loved Dark Eras – both contributing and reading the amazing things that the other writers wrote – and I agree that WoD would hugely benefit from a Dark Eras of its own.

(Full disclosure: I would straight-up kill a man to be able to write another Dark Era. :D)

      • Yes yes kill a man. Clearly as a member of the church of the sub genus you recognize all men as merely part of the foot stool that angels got for Bob. So it only seems reasonable.

        • What ever are you talking about? *innocent eyes*

Nah, totally Bob πŸ™‚ As they say, ‘Moses parted the Red Sea, Oppenheimer split the atom, but “Bob” cut the crap.’

          Reply
  16. I would love the Resurgence as a time period, but I honestly want at least 1 good time period piece for Changeling before the Sidhe came back. I know a lot of fans would complain (Love for the Shining Host is after all neverending), but the entire culture of the Fae would be different and it’s always frustrated me that we don’t have a good book that explores those dynamics. I love the idea of the 1930’s with the horrors of the dust bowl as the Autumn of a coming endless winter, and pre code Hollywood framed as a last bastion of creativity and wonder. You could have locations like the Grand Cinema Palaces as powerful freeholds. I mean the meat of it is just . . . ooomph. So good.

On the European side you have the buildup to WWII. Given the fiction at the beginning of the Scatthach section of Book of Lost Houses you can see how the time period is even more rich in Europe and would allow the exploration of some really REALLY dark dreams, and what insidious creativity means for the Fae. I personally have never struggled with the “Changeling has too many kids themes” because I see the game very much through the lens of stories like the one at the opening of the Scatthach writeup, but I definitely think in terms of how the community at large engages with the game line that development would be very beneficial.

I’d love to see a Vampire Dark Ages Wraith supplement that goes into what life was like after the first great maelstrom. It would be pretty spectacular to see the early rise of Renegades as they blame Charon for the first great catastrophe of Stygia. For a full on time period line though I’d much rather see the Great War get the limited line it always deserved. Everyone loves Dark Ages, and it is ripe territory for Wraith, but as a setting it’s also already received an enormous amount of attention, and Wraiths themselves wouldn’t be fundamentally different at that point in history. If we’re not going to be looking at a fundamentally different phase in their existence as supernaturals the way Dark Ages Fae does with Changelings or Dark Ages Mage does with Mages I’d really rather flesh out a period of time that hasn’t gotten much attention.

  19. Since I wasn’t at GenCon, where can I find more info on the plans for Dark Eras 2? Are you going to put out a press release? Is there any chance we might see some of the settings that didn’t quite make the cut the first time? (Of all the runners-up, the one I was most disappointed not to see was Jazz Age Requiem.)
