Werewolf? There Wolf! [Monday Meeting Notes]

That’s right! The big news for us last week, beyond all the national and international doings, was the announcement from the new White Wolf Publishing that they had signed a deal for a Werewolf: the Apocalypse computer game for PC and console!

You can find the press release here: https://www.paradoxinteractive.com/en/white-wolf-partners-with-focus-home-interactive-for-a-video-game-adaptation-of-the-world-of-darkness-storyteller-game-werewolf-the-apocalypse/

We’re absolutely thrilled here at Onyx Path central, both because we can hardly wait to play it, but also because this is the first of the fruits of WWP‘s last year’s worth of effort in getting the World of Darkness licensed out (the way things should have been happening the last ten years).

In a lot of ways, they are playing catch up, but the point is that they’re actually getting contracts signed that gets WoD into different media. This is what they said they’d be doing, and what we said they’d be doing, and it’s just the start.

A brace of points, though, in response to things being brought up after the announcement:

  1. Heart of Gaia was cancelled, what, 15-20 years ago? Let it go, people! Whatever it was going to be then, would look and play like crap now. Let it go…
  2. Like I said above, this is just the first of many cool licensed projects utilizing aspects of WoD. To some extent, WWP is limited to the offers and contacts they get, but considering the cult reputation of the earlier WoD games like Bloodlines within the computer game industry, I have no doubt more gamelines will get their projects too. It’s happening, just wait for your fave to be announced!
  3. The CCP-owned WoD MMO is dead. Dead and dead. WWP is using some concept art (and why not, those artists had incredible skills) but the code and assets are dated at this point. Maybe a different company will license the right to make an MMO, but the CCP one? Dead.
  4. Speaking of which, CCP has nothing to do with the current owners of the White Wolf properties. They can’t ruin it “like they did the MMO”, as they aren’t anyway involved. Similarly, White Wolf can’t drop the ball like they did on game X as the new White Wolf Publishing is a totally different company with different people working in it.
  5. Finally, just to clarify, Onyx Path Publishing is a fully independent company that is also licensed by the new White Wolf Publishing, but for us our license is to make tabletop RPGs. We have no connection to WWP besides that, and no connection to any computer game licenses unless the other company reaches out to us for some reason.

Anyway, very exciting times are just starting for WoD fans.

Semi-serious thoughts here. (By which I mean, it’s a serious topic, but let’s not get too intense about it). Had a lot of talks and some eye-opening experiences at MidWinter – most of which I talked about last week.

But, one thing that came up while hanging out with folks like new Vampire: the Requiem 2nd developer Danielle Harper (Congrats Danielle!), was the wide range of experience with and connection to the old White Wolf that folks had. Besides old codgers like myself from WW, there were fans there who had been playing since 1991. There were “medium experience” folks like Rose and Eddy who came aboard after the legendary days, and newbies playing and writing only for the past five years, more or less.

I was often asked to recount a story from back then of the crazy stuff we did one moment, and then was pulled into a huddle because one of our freelancers was having an attack of doubts about their work. Rose and Matt McElroy and I would be in a corner making decisions about how to get some projects rolling faster now, then I’d be talking with a fan who was at GenCon the year our tent-like White Wolf booth fell down on us, and then I’d be walking a freelancer back to their room because they had had way too much to drink.

The juxtaposition over and over again really put into sharp focus not just how ridiculously long I’ve been at this (as did John Wick as we compared our grey beards…dammit John!), but also that as Onyx continues to bring new talented folks into our projects, we’ve got to be aware that some of them have absorbed all those stories, good and bad, true and false. We have an obligation to encourage and empower our new creators, and to be aware that they might have expectations about how things work in “the biz” that were either exaggerated or which are just not possible in these times.

We’re going to work a lot harder to mentor our new creators internally, but as an outward sign of this thinking, I’m changing the venerable “Today’s Reason to Drink” at the end of this blogΒ to “Today’s Reason to Celebrate”. I think that hits what we’ve been trying to say all these years, but while Celebrating includes Drinking, not all Drinking is a Celebration, so this change opens up what we can put there – and in today’s uncertain times in the US and around the world, we need all the celebration (drinking and otherwise) thatΒ we can find!

Finally, here’s a few things that people asked me about from MidWinter and this last week:

As you can see from the teaser art this week, we do have art for Changeling 20th coming in and Mirthful Mike just needs approval from WWP and he can get the layout started by handing everything off to one of our most talented and skillful old compadres from the WW Production & Design department, Aileen Miles. Who will be doing the layout and graphic design.

We just sent the text for Wraith 20th over to WWP for approval. More details in the Wr20 backer update coming before the end of the month, but we’ll be looking at starting art notes now.

The Scion 2e BackerKit page is almost ready, just need a few more touches and BK’s OK and out it goes.

You’ll note if you look at The Blurbs! section below that we’re offering two more separated chapters from Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras (this timeΒ one forΒ Mummy chapter and one for a Mage and Werewolf chapter). No, we don’t have astounding sales figures on the first one, but we expected we’d need a half-dozen out there before we could really decide if folks like the option of just picking up chapters for the game-lines they prefer.

Yes, our Extended Media teams are working diligently behind the scenes to, uh, extend our media.

And with that, I’m outta here!

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Ruins of Empire (Mummy 1893-1924). Perhaps the quintessential era of the mummy in the minds of Westerners, this period saw the decline of the two greatest empires of the age: British and Ottoman. Walk with the Arisen as they bear witness to the death of the Victorian age, to pivotal mortal discoveries in Egypt, and to the horrors of the Great War.

Available in PDF and physical copy PoD versions this Wednesday, the 25th, on DTRPG.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: The Sundered World (Werewolf and Mage 5500-5000 BCE). At the birth of civilization, in the shadow of the Fall, the Awakened stand as champions and protectors of the agricultural villages spread across the Balkans. In a world without a Gauntlet, where Shadow and flesh mingle, the steady taming of the world by humanity conflicts with the half-spirit children of Father Wolf.

Available in PDF and physical copy PoD versions this Wednesday, the 25th, on DTRPG.

  1. Before Changeling: the Lost 2.0 accidentally got moved to Editing, it was at the the top of the list of Development. When it was moved back, it ended up going to the bottom of the list. Should it go back to the top of the list of Development?

    Reply
    • Not really, there’s no “slot” they need to fit into, just so long as the project is in the right stage of the process. Thanks!

      Reply
    • The order within each group doesn’t have any particular meaning. At best, it just reflects the order in which Rose hears back from the developers. It doesn’t really reflect any particular queue for the books themselves.

      Reply
      • For my personal record-keeping, I tend to list games in the order their first editions came out. So, f’rex, in the development section, I start with the W20 products, then Wr20, the C20 fiction anthology, Ring of Spiragos (Dagger of Spiragos is listed separately because it’s in development and art direction), Arms of the Chosen, Signs of Sorcery, Changeling: The Lost, Second Edition, and finally Building a Legend. Application to the other categories requires a memory for chronological trivia or a willingness to trawl archives.

  2. How is the M20 Book of Secrets artwork coming along ? and also speaking of being the grand poobah for OP, has there been any artwork for any of the previous games that made you stand back and go “wow, whats awesome..” ?

    Reply
    • M20 BoS art is being made, maybe we’ll have some teasers soon. For the WOW art, give me a bit more in the way of parameters…I’ve seen thousands of pieces of art over the years, after all. You mean old WW days, or Onyx Path, or both?

  3. WOO HOO! I mean that for literally everything in this week’s update. The Werewolf game, seeing Wraith movement, C20 being almost ready for layout, and Mortal Remains moving to layout already. There is a whole lot to be excited about this week. Rock on!

  4. So, just to make sure, this Werewolf game is going to most likely be set within the reworked WtA that WWP is going to create isn’t it? It won’t be a game based on W20.

    Reply
      • Thanks, I know you probably can’t talk about it a lot, even if you do know more. I’m very interested though, at least looks wise and ambience, their Call of Cthulhu game looks amazing.

  5. When it says “color comps” under art direction, are those finished art pieces or something between a sketch and a finished piece?

    Reply
    • So many great pieces, it’s hard to decide. What I always love is when I get something where the artist takes the notes and really goes way beyond what I’m expecting. The Imperial Parade illustration from Exalted 3rd, Sam Araya’s art we used for the God Machine Chronicle cover, and the Dogs vs Ants piece for Pugmire, as examples, really caught me by surprise for that reason, and that was a thrill.

    • Proofing is when the developer goes through a laid out version of the book (in this case a pdf) looking for errors that might’ve slipped through or been introduced in the layout process.

    • Marin is correct, this is a World of Darkness book. Basically a supplement to all 5 20th Anniversary Edition core books.

There will be sections on how paranormal investigators interact with the Giovanni, the Syndicate, the Arcanum, Pentex, and more.

  8. Great news!! I’m glad to hear that the new White Wolf is able to move forward with plans and ideas that didn’t work out the first time.

I really like the new Changeling art. It keeps the feel of first edition but updates it at the same time.

Also, can’t wait for that Scion survey/BackerKit. πŸ™‚

    Reply
    • Well, kind of. I think we have to be careful in how we think about this and not look at WWP as redoing old plans but as them making new things happen. Werewolf just happens to have several projects that were cancelled previously under WW. But again, this is the whole point of their purchase of the WW IPs; to get licenses across all media and build up WoD, first, as a known brand. Thanks!

  9. Proofing refers to the process of proofreading said manuscript for typos and what have you. Making sure the text lines up, ect..

  13. There is so much happiness and great news in this week’s update.

First, happy birthday! Wish you the best in the coming year. And the ways things are shaping up, I’m sure it will be amazing.

Second, HOLY APIS, a honest to God Werewolf: The Apocalypse video game. I am so glad I got to see this. Bloodlines was the epitome of what gaming could do with Vampires, if you ask me, and I always wanted to see a game do the same for Werewolf. Hell, I’ve designed this game in my mind so many times! Wish I lived in France, for I would apply to a job at Cyanide right now if I did. I left that industry behind three years ago, but for Werewolf, I would go back without hesitation.

Also very exited about Wraith. That is one book I can’t wait to read cover to cover. πŸ™‚

Oh! And good idea to change to reasons to celebrate. That makes a lot of sense.

    Until next week.

    Reply
    • Indeed. I’m really interested in hearing more about the intended gameplay style. Right now, are they thinking about a Bloodlines feel, or something else? We’ll just have to wait to hear more, but just the fact that one is slated to be made is cool in and of itself, I think.

      Reply
      • 100% in agreement. It will be a long wait for more information.

Whatever they do, I have to believe it will be great. This is WWP’s first stone to build a foundation that will bring their plan to fruition. It has to be a success, it has to blow people’s mind. It has to be Marvel’s Iron Man, so to speak. I cannot believe they would have gone ahead without making sure it would be amazing. Thus, the wait begins.

        Reply
        • Which brings the question: What would you like as a gameplay style?

BTW, this is an open question. Anyone, please feel free to partake.

  14. I missed the chance to add this last week so I’m tagging back to it here: Love to see progression on Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition. I have two players who practically forced me into a blood oath that as Storyteller I would drop whatever other projects are on the burner the very moment that Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition comes out. They absolutely love that game line. We’re playing a Geist Chronicle right now and they still can’t wait for more. Looking forward to it!

Tagging off of that, seeing Wraith getting closer to the finish line is exciting. I came to Wraith way late in the game so I missed a lot of the story it had after the core. Absolutely looking forward to getting a chance to start over on the ground floor with the 20th-A Edition.

For me personally, Hunter 2nd is the next big bright spot. Vigil was the first NWoD RPG I picked up new back in the day and it holds a special place for me.

  15. I’m completely happy, not only about the new announced projects for WoD (the tabletop games and the new WTA PC game), if not the thought that WoD will be able to reach out new audiences and people.

If it would be a WTA/WoD simulator and there’s the option to play all the Tribes, including the Black Spiral Dancers, too and you’d able to fight for Gaia or betray her and there’s a great immersion in the lore, I’d feel served, well, with all the Tribes and the lore as the main gameplay aspect would be enough.

BTW, considering the current situation of the world, a Demon: The Fallen PC game would be a good idea, sooner than later.

More media for World of Darkness!

  17. Whie i know that the Scion origins and Hero are being developed at the same time, has there been any discussion of releasing origins before hero if it gets finished faster, even if only in a pdf form? As i’m(and probably you all as well) are unsure of the size of the books, I was wondering if Origins ends up being completed say a month before hero, if we could just get our grubby little hands on it sooner to learn the system…maybe start up some origns characters that go hero once that book is finished.

    Reply
    • PDF-wise, that’s possible, depending on Neall’s comfort level with putting Origin out before Hero. For the physical books, we’re planning on doing those together and releasing them together too.
