A Purr-fect Start for Monarchies of Mau [Monday Meeting Notes]

This little fellow pictured above is Sabian Sphynx von Angora, one of the iconic characters in Monarchies of Mau. He’s a necromancer, because, as Eddy Webb says: “Cats like to play with dead things.”

Sabian is featured prominently on the Monarchies of Mau Kickstarter page, helping to explain just what Monarchies of Mau is and why backing it is a good idea. He must be pretty persuasive, as the MoM KS funded last Tuesday in just a minute under an hour and has been rolling along happily since then.

And besides being something like “The Three Musketeers meets Planet of the Apes, but with cats”, Monarchies of Mau is also a completely standalone game. You don’t need Pugmire to play it, although having both books does mean you have the rules for mixed cat and dog groups. Mass hysteria!

New art for Beckett’s Jyhad Diary by Michael Gaydos

Like I mentioned last week, our Operations Manager, Mighty Matt McElroy, traveled to World of Darkness: Berlin a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic time connecting with the gang from the new White Wolf, as well as the convention crew, attendees, and fellow licensees of the WW intellectual properties.

That’s right: fellow licensees. Which was absolutely great for us here at Onyx Path, because Mighty Matt got the chance to hobnob, trade stories, and talk with them about the potential projects we could do together that they approached him about. (Hopefully a tenth of the discussed projects actually happen, because even that much would be some amazing opportunities for Onyx Path).

But that whole set-up of licensees visiting each other at a WW convention might sound strange to a bunch of you. Particularly if you are used to a White Wolf that makes most of what you are interested in, with a couple of licenses for things that aren’t tabletop RPGs.

In fact, I wonder if some of the upset that has occurred with each of the new WW‘s announcements is not partly because folks aren’t used to how they are moving forward.

Yes, the new White Wolf is working on Vampire 5th Edition, and revealed staff (Hi, Ken!) and some planned formats, as well as doing some very, very, early playtesting. But rather than being the start an ongoing game line that they create, they are looking at V5 as the hub of a many, many licenses. Onyx Path will be in that line-up, creating new tabletop RPGs, but so will other folks, and with the creation of WW‘s community content plans as talked about at the con, maybe some of those creators will be you.

And then, outside of tabletop RPGs, will be licenses to other media. There’s really no limit here as they move through the expected like bringing back VTES or working with our friends at By Night Studios on LARPing, and then into computer games, other sorts of games, and even TV and movies.

What the new White Wolf is doing is more what, let’s say, is done with Star Wars, with a central core “property” and lots and lots of licenses to media that can feature that property. So when you see a new project announced, it is very likely a new project and a new licensing partner, and if that project doesn’t float your boat, just give WW time and you’ll see another launched that will fit your interests better.

Or as another example, you might see a licensed board game with art pulled from the illustrations we commissioned for one of our books. The new WW can give that art to another licensee, because even though we commissioned it originally, the art ultimately belongs to WW and they can use it as they think best.

Onyx Path is one of these licensing partners, and one of many for V5 and the new iteration of World of Darkness. With the idea of the new WW as a hub with lots of spokes, we don’t get to choose, and often no knowledge of, other licensees until their projects are announced, because they are another spoke over or even on the other side of the hub from us.

Mighty Matt tells me that the WW crew took great pains to talk up in glowing terms our Beckett’s Jyhad Diary project (that we have worked on with them) as a gateway, or even bridge, from Vampire: the Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition to V5. Which was great to hear, and the compliments were very appreciated!

They also talked up, Martin in particular, the idea that Chronicles of Darkness is pretty much going to continue as Onyx Path‘s exclusive playground. They didn’t mention it, as far as I’ve heard, but we are also rolling full steam ahead with Exalted 3rd.

Mighty Matt also took along a hefty box full of our brochures which was scarfed up in a single day, so hopefully a bunch of our community that never even realized all the game lines we are working on now can see the full range of all that Onyx is doing!

So, all in all a very good event for us, and for the WoD community as a whole!

Meanwhile, here at home. Rollickin’ Rose and I talked to Dapper Dave Brookshaw about his outline for Deviant last week, and went over our notes. Dave is making some changes and we’ll be presenting that to WW, and then he’ll finally be able to hire writers. Meanwhile, he is dedicated to getting caught up on Mage2 releases. Dapper Dave has had a bunch of challenges thrown at him this last year or so, but things are looking good moving forward, and we’re glad we could work with him on that.

Similarly, Rollickin’ Rose has been working with our Exalted 3rd team in order to get the new devs acclimated to our procedures, and our monthly projects folks working hand-in-hand with the devs so there’s a consistency of vision as well as teamwork. We’ll be putting the next installments of our monthly EX3 releases on sale this Wednesday, and to tide you over, here’s some of the art as a teaser!

Sailing out of the dark, the V20 Dark Ages Companion Advance PDF is now on sale on DriveThruRPG.com! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/211504/V20-Dark-Ages-Companion

Travel the long roads and deep seas in search of power and experience danger, or tackle the wilderness to hunt monsters and face death. Settlements large and small dot the black expanse with the promise of sanctuary, life, and community. These bastions of civilization present cold comfort, when playing host to vampire warlords and sadistic Cainite faiths. Whether led by a Prince, a coordinated belief, or hounded by monsters from without and within — no domain is truly the same as another.

Dark Ages Companion includes:

• Domains scattered across the world, from small fiefdoms to massive cities. Bath, Bjarkarey, Constantinople, Rome, Mogadishu, and Mangaluru each receive coverage.

• Apocrypha including plot hooks, new Paths, and mysteries to explore in your games.

• A how-to guide on building a domain within your chronicle, including events and servants necessary to make a domain as functional or dysfunctional as you wish.

• A study on warfare in the Dark Ages period, so combat in your chronicles can gain authenticity and lethality.

The fabric of reality is cracking. Fissures appear in thin air, glowing with balefire. Something is scratching on the other side, pressing, beginning to break through….

The Wyrm’s corruption finds its way into the hearts of humans and Garou alike. Even an ultra-rational techno-cratic scientist can fall sway to its lies. Channeling his hate and resentment through the most sophisticated machine ever created, Basil Czajka has turned a tool designed to peer deep into the heart of the quantum universe into a nursery for the hatching of a horror — a creature whose birth cry is destined to unmake Gaia’s Song of Creation.

The only ones standing in his way are One-Song, a broken-down old Theurge, and Lord Albrecht, whose heed-less anger might be the very weapon the enemy needs to crack the egg and free the Unmaker.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Beneath the Skin (Demon and Skinchangers 1486-1502 Aztec Empire). Ahuitzotl sits on the throne at the height of the Aztec Empire, overseeing his sorcerer-priests’ sacrifices and the endless flower wars his jaguar and eagle warriors carry out in his name to keep the altars well-supplied with victims. The gears of the Aztec Empire turn smoothly and inexorably, but not everything is what it pretends to be. Skinchangers take the shapes of animals to run the wilds or bring down human prey, the Unchained cobble together identities from stolen lives, and stranger things still lurk in the deserts and jungles beyond the walls of Tenochtitlan.

On sale in PDF and physical copy PoD versions on DTRPG! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/206028/Dark-Eras-Beneath-the-Skin-Skinchangers-and-Demon-the-Descent

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Into the Cold (Demon: the Descent 1961 Berlin). East Germany erects a wall against its Western counterpart, turning West Berlin into an island within its own country. As the Cold War heats up, demons find themselves the targets of increasing human scrutiny, and begin to realize that the God-Machine’s plans didn’t end with the War.

Silly me, I thought it was stuff like the Zak S. thing where they let a guy who’s harassed your employees work for them and put out content that was also harassing and offensive. -_-

    • My comment doesn’t discount that in any way. There are other concerns that other members of our community have, and that’s what I’m talking about in the text you quoted.

  2. I just pledged for my first Kickstarter and was a bit confused about how to add the extra accessories (namely the dice and the screen).

I went with the $85 tier because I don’t already own Pugmire and thought I’d get both at the same time. But I also wanted the dice and screen accessories. Does that mean that all I do is to add +25$ to my pledged amount with no way to directly specify which accessory I want? Do I get contacted later on about that or have I missed something?

    Reply
    • So firstly the Kickstarter needs to finish successfully.
A few weeks or so after it finishes, you’ll be contacted by email with a link to OnyxPath’s selected addon administrator (usually BackerKit, going by my own subscriptions).
In addition to confirming your address and things, it’ll ask you to specify which of the shiny things you’d like to be packaged together with your new books.
From there, it’s just a matter of waiting a year or two for everything to be made as pretty as possible and left on your doorstep, dice and all!

      Reply
    • Under the Add-Ons banner on the Kickstarter page:

“You can Add-on the items listed below to any Reward Tier pledge that already includes a Monarchies of Mau physical book by clicking on your Reward Tier to the right, and then when you get to the pledge page that confirms your pledge amount, manually changing the amount of your pledge from the base Reward amount to that Reward amount plus the amount of each Add-on that you want as listed below.”

      Reply
      • I understood that much. The only thing I was curious about was how to specify which accessory I wanted since I believe two of them had the same price and simply adding the sum won’t automatically give away which of the two with the same price I want. But I suppose that’s specified later on when e-mails start showing up.

        Reply
        • That’s right. All that gets specified in your BackerKit Survey. Add-ons aren’t actually something that Kickstarter created or has programming in place for; people who were running Kickstarter campaigns came up with them and had to ad lib how Add-ons were handled after the KS was over. BackerKit does that well, I’ve found, and gives you a lot of control over your pledge post-Kickstarter.

  3. Hi. When we can expect faq for a mage? It’s been almost 9 months since the work on it was ‘almost done’. I think that’s a pretty important part of a gaming product but we’re keep being said that there are other more important things to do. Which is quite possible, but you know, I’m curious.

    Reply
    • That seems to be something the developer has mentioned working on. Right now, as I noted in the blog, he’s getting back up to speed on the actual Mage products and once those are where they need to be he’ll be able to look at following through with a FAQ.

  4. I’m glad to hear that Dave Brookshaw is staying on as developer of Mage and Deviant. Things have been quiet for those lines for a while and I was afraid he might be leaving. Here’s hoping whatever’s been going on in his life gets worked out and goes well for him.

I’m also excited for the new Beast material. I knew it was getting close to being done, but I thought hoping for a release this week was pushing it, so thanks for the good news.

  5. Serious question: what are the odds of changeling the lost 2nd ed advanced pdf seeing the light of day before the end of the year?

  6. Hi,

I am curious about a statement. You wrote..
“Onyx Path will be in that line-up, creating new tabletop RPGs”
To which new tabletop RPGs under the White Wolf IP are you referring to?
    The CofD and Exalted?
The V5 line under the user generated content license? More official products for the V5 line? (which I thought will be done by White Wolf themselves, bit like Disney still releases Star Wars movies and series themselves)

    kind regards,
    Jennifer

    • We’re a business partner with WW, so we won’t be utilizing the community content portal as such. As per their talk, WW is currently slated to create the main V5 book plus the Camarilla and Anarchs books, but they have encouraged us to pitch ideas for V5 books and other supplements are in discussion.

      • Y’know, it could be argued that while we’re too early for Demon 20th Anniversary, we’re right on time for Demon 15th Anniversary.

        Eh?

        Eh?

        • More importantly, we’re two years or from a hypothetical Hunter20 — and if Onyx Path’s track record is any indication, that would be just long enough for it to come out on its actual 20th anniversary if they started working on it now.

  7. Very awesome news! Glad that WW looks at Onyx Path as a serious and vital part of the WoD/CofD. In terms of new games, this intrigues me…and I cannot wait to hear/see more! V5 seems interesting (I have seen the talk on it) but I will hold all opinions until we start seeing more development on it. Thanks for keeping us up to date! And, if I can be a bother for a moment; How is Geist 2E going? (1.1E was my FAVORITE OP game!)

Soon shall the temple of flesh arise. Soon shall the Wronged feel the cleansing fires of Vengeance burning in their veins. I love me some straight up supernatural hijinks but secret psychic warfare THATS MY JAM! Out of all the projects y’all have going, TC (Aberrant – I got players waiting) and Deviant are the ones that have me the most lit up

I am so glad to hear that WW is apparently going to be a generous working partner and deeply curious whats in the big pile of crossmedia maybe that you get to see. Any chance some of your folks could pick up the title screenwriter – cause awesome is AWESOME

    • We’re still expecting the Trinity Continuum to have its Kickstarter later this year, and we’ll have a rules+Trinity sneak peak brochure for Gen Con. I think we’re more likely to get a chance at other disciplines like screenwriter with our own projects like the Trinity Continuum than with WW’s, but you never know!

  9. Hi Rich, same question as last week since you asked me to push it back a week. How are the individual Exalted pdfs going to roll up into a final product? I want to get them all, but also want to have the complete version and a POD of it, but I don’t want to pay twice.

    Reply
    • Here’s where we are with this, and I mostly just wanted to confirm that we were still all OK with this plan and had examined all the options based on how other companies have done similar things: We’ll combine all of the monthly releases, release a compiled PDF (with a seriously discounted price coupon link sent to folks who bought the monthly releases) and a PoD version at regular prices. Hope that works for you, we are just giving this a shot now and gonna learn along the way.

  10. Great post as ever, richt. Glad to hear about your involvement with 5th! I will certainly take a look when its released.

A couple of questions if you will allow.

    1. The new werewolf novel: I am unclear as to if original w20 backers will get it or if I should buy it. I am more than fine with purchasing it, as I feel I have gotten so much out of that kickstarter already.

    2. Indoctrination: any noteworthy update on the pentex book? No rush, just cant qait to see the drawings 🙂

    3. Can you fill us in on the community content a bit more? I saw your plans for it with Scion but this WW thing is new to me. And I would LOVE to participate if it means I get to write books on how to roleplay spider born ananasi, etc.

Best of day to you and yours.

    • 1- If you’re a backer, you should have received the link for the PDF as per the W20 Kickstarter. It was sent March 30th.

2- As per the updates section, art is being made for it right now.

3- That’s going to be up to the new White Wolf to give out. We’re doing our own thing with Scion and our other properties in terms of community content, and like a lot of these things there’s some room for variance in the details. When they put things live, we’ll certainly let folks know, but until then I’d hate to give out info that might change about another company’s project.

      • 1 – Found it! Many thanks. Must have missed it in the flood of kickstarter emails (it is possible I kickstart too muhc). I must say, I am starting to find it difficult to track after so many. Happy customer on all of yours, so, not complaining.

2 – Good. It’s just that the past tense sort of made me think it was done (AD’D – Art Directed). But I understand what you meant now.

3 – Roger that. Thanks for saying as much as you did. I’ll keep an eye out now that I know it’s in the works. Hope you get to do W5 too. To be 100% honest, I’m gonna have trust issues with that one. But I trust you guys. You did wonders with W20.

  12. I’m wondering if I can ask how many short stories are in the upcoming CtL2E Huntsman Chronicle Anthology. I love you guys anthologies! With the Geist2E core in the midst of 2nd drafting as stated above, might we see a Geist (?No Idea as to the name. No previews as yet into the new Chronicle focus?) Chronicle Anthology in starting up on the Monday Meeting blogs soon? It’s great to see so many projects moving through the Art Direction point. And a big thanks to Rose & Meghan for their Changeling 2E posts back in April. Gave a lot of food for thought and really added to the building interest for the new core. Looking forward to Geist & Hunter 2E advancing to the development stage in the coming months and delightful tidbits that may follow 🙂

    • Each of the devs posts previews, tidbits, excerpts, etc, as they feel it works for their workflow, so hopefully you’ll get more in blogs and such coming up. Thanks!

  13. Really looking forward to the upcoming WoD Ghost Hunters supplement! Is there any chance we are going to see some info or a preview of what the final article might cover?

  14. I’m so excited to see that Deviant is moving forward. I’ve been eagerly anticipating that game ever since it was announced, and every tidbit that we’ve gotten has just left me wanting it even more. I’m glad that Onyx Path might be hiring writers for it soon. How would existing freelancers toss their hats in the ring for consideration?

  15. Oh no…new Exalted devs? What happened? I know of serious health issues over the last few years, but not the current status of that team.
