A Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love! [Monday Meeting Notes]

That must be what a whole lotta you folks have for Exalted Infernals because your support for its crowdfunder has been utterly fantastic and heartfelt! We funded in 11 minutes last Tuesday, and…

We’re not even a week into the campaign and Exalted Infernals is over 500% funded!

Thank you so much over 1400 backers – you’ve not just enabled our creating the Deluxe version of Infernals, but also the creation of eleven Stretch Goals so far! These include the Infernals’ Companion sections: New Signature Charms x2, a Gazetteer of Malfeas, Infernal Artifacts, Infernal Storytellers Guide, Adamant Circle Sorcery; the Screen; Infernal Backers’ TShirt, Digital Wallpaper, and Streaming Overlay!

Whew! And we’ve got more than three weeks to go!

So, with that in mind, here’s a teaser from the devs giving you a glimpse of hellish marvels yet to come:

Hey folks — Vance and Elliott here with a sneak peek at Infernal’s signature power: Devil-Body Apotheosis. Behold their true form, and despair.

Devil-Body Apotheosis

Each Infernal Exalt contains the hidden potential for a terrible transformation. In times of great need, the raw Essence of Hell catalyzes around their corrupted Exaltation like amber, warping them physically and spiritually into a ruinous and majestic demon form. Devil-Bodies can be almost anything, from a hundred-limbed colossus with an immolating third eye to a ziggurat of ever-growing black glass that drives its victims to despair with its maddening chimes.

Designing Devil-Bodies

Infernal players receive five dots to spend on their character’s Devil-Body, to be spent on a list of powers that range from one to three points. Additionally, a Devil-Body has a package of five dots of mutations which manifest while transformed. Players are encouraged to work with their Storyteller to come up with a distinctive Devil-Body that they feel accurately reflects their character’s inner demon.

Devil-Body Powers

Expansive Form (•••)

The Infernal encompasses a wide area, allowing her to become a living tidal wave, a veinous root system or profane temple. This has the following benefits:

•           When she transforms, she can choose to displace terrain within short range, pushing it back one range band to make way for her grandeur. Depending on how this power manifests, this can be temporary, as she warps the boundaries of space for the duration of her transformation in the manner of Hell’s arcane topography, or permanent, as she crushes erodes away that which would confine her or crushes it like a layer of the Demon City.

•           The area within short range of her counts as difficult terrain for her enemies.

•           When she attacks an enemy, she can count as being one range band closer or further away from him, whichever is more advantageous. She gains the same benefit when enemies make ranged attacks against her.

•           She gains Dispersed Form and Area Attack for free.

•           Some variants of Expansive Form are immobile but encompass a much larger area. The Infernal cannot move from her location, but she destroys or displaces terrain within long range when she transforms, can count as being three range bands closer (but not further away) for the purposes of attacks, and can count any area within long range as difficult terrain for her enemies.

Oh yeah! I think we’ll be presenting the first Charms section this coming Wednesday! (We’ve also expanded the high level pledge Rewards, and wait until you see what gets added for Black Friday!)

Also Luvin’ This Stuff:

We’re also thrilled that Curseborne has had a great first week on DTRPG, rapidly headed towards a Gold bestseller for its PDF and physical book PoD versions! It might even be there by now as you read this. Many thanks to all of you who posted reviews and ratings – those are both vital towards making some noise on the very crowded site!

We’re expecting the Backerkit page for the Curseborne Player’s Guide to go live very soon as well, as we’ve had a lot of folks asking if they can jump in on the CBPG now that the Kickstarter is over. You sure can! Just keep an eye out over on BackerKit, and we’ll have a link to get you over there real soon!

Of course, since this is the end of the month, you will also be able to get some Curseborne love with this month’s Tasty Bit on Weds!

PAX Unplugged was last weekend in my hometown of Philly, and LisaT and myself met up with Dixie and the ever-lovin’ Neall Raemonn Price (and also that rascal Justin Achilli manning the Studio Hermitage booth as they spread the word about their Our Brilliant Ruin TTRPG and graphic novel and more) to wander about, see all the delightful games and companies, and also sweat our butts off. It was HOT in the exhibition space! Onyx was represented there sales-wise by Studio2, and there were multiple Curseborne games happening in the free-play/demo area! Here’s how it looked:

Meanwhile, over at the Bodhana Group‘s booth, the skies parted and a miracle occurred as the advance PoD copies of Branch Riders finally showed up on Sunday! Since they were already demoing the game pretty much non-stop to great acclaim, it was super that they could actually put a few copies into folks’ hands! I know the whole team, who have worked so hard on this, their very first TTRPG, were really thankful to get the opportunity and for everyone’s reaction to BR!

While we’re talking about thanks and being grateful, it is indeed time for our annual Thanksgiving line-up where our team here give some thought to just what they’re thankful for this year! (Unfortunately, a bunch of folks are already on vacay for the week – but they’re just as thankful as the rest of us!).

First off, here’s Matthew Dawkins:

This year I’m feeling thankful for the great success Monster Kingdoms and Curseborne have received. It’s always great to work on games that receive such warm receptions. In the case of both of these games I’ve been playing in or running stories for them over the past few months (a full year for one of my Curseborne games!). I’m very thankful for the support of my Patreons and their fantastic character and plot ideas, especially the way the Accursed in last night’s Curseborne game defeated the Blooming God in its peculiar battleground liminality, and maybe (just maybe) freed the Junction City U Chi Omega sorority house from the horrible haunting and mind control that’s been influencing them for so many years.

LisaT adds:

As a person who primarily works from home, this year I’m thankful for Onyx Path MM group. You are often a bright spot on a Monday midday and I learn much about the creative process from you. Having just been to PAXU this weekend and another convention or so this year, I’m also thankful for the fans we get to meet. Their great enthusiasm for our games makes the job worthwhile!

Mirthful Mike has a few things to be thankful about, too:

This year I am thankful for….

  1. Rich and Onyx Path crew for having my back after one of the biggest health scares in my life. They all picked up the slack while I recovered from the worst of it… and have continued to be supportive as I continue to recover from some of the lasting bits of it.
  2.  That Curseborne has been so well received and continues to thrive. Makes all the effort we’ve put in over the last 3 or 4 years feel really worthwhile.
  3. That OPP has been able to weather one of the complicated and treacherous years I’ve seen in my lifetime.
  4. Mountain Dew Baja Blast Zero

Here’s Travis Legge with s’more thanks:

I’m thankful for the amazing fan support we’ve received throughout the year. From the successful crowdfunding of multiple new games to the warm reception Curseborne has gotten, there has been a great deal of excitement not only for we creators, but for the community that enjoys our games. I look forward to seeing that continue to bloom as we head into the new year and beyond! I’m also grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this team, helping create and expand wonderful worlds we can all tell stories in. Thank you all so much!

And also, ta da!: Dixie:

I’m thankful to have such lovely colleagues who help each other out through both personal and professional challenges. Though I don’t get to see most of them nearly as often as I’d like, we have a great core team here surrounded by a bunch of excellent freelancers, and they’re all fantastic to work with. I’m also incredibly thankful that Curseborne is mostly out in the wild now so people can pick up and play this labor of love we’ve been working on for over seven years. I am excitedly developing Seattle: City of Curses alongside Matthew Dawkins, and I think people will really enjoy it. I’m thankful, too, that I keep getting to put my paws on Pugmire‘s second edition, as I’ve been a huge fan of Pugmire since 2015! Have a lovely holiday for those who celebrate, whether with friends or family, y’all!

Finally, last and certainly least, are my thanks for such a team and such a wonderful group of fans that even through a very scary and confusing and cautious year for us, you all made it fun – and we’re suddenly looking at getting back to whatever passes as business as usual for our wacky company! No teasers for the year to come; I have all of December for that! Nope, just so grateful as I look back over this last year that we can create and publish in a biz that allows us to push our creative limits.

It’s really something special, and you’re all a part of the magic. We could all be stuck doing massively unsatisfying gigs and wishing we could create if we didn’t have our fan community supporting our efforts! Thanks to you all for enabling our passionate creation of:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

On Thursday we in the US celebrate Thanksgiving – which is a super holiday for getting down to thinking about the good things we have in life, even if there’s a crapton of bad stuff all around us too. A lot of people think also of Turkey Day, and the MST3K Turkey Day Marathon, and Football, Football, Football, and parades and stuff. But, still, a good day to find Thanks in our lives!

  2. I thought I saw Neall & Dixie from across the room in 108, but I was in the middle of playing Mothership so I didn’t get a chance to say hello. The Studio 2 booth was jumping every time I went by. It was another great PaxU.
