Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts! [Monday Meeting Notes]

We aren’t! Which is mostly because of World of Darkness: Ghost Hunters and its Kickstarter that funded in three hours and has zoomed past 200% funded in just short of a week!

As we’ve been doing for quite a few Kickstarters, the completed text is being released to backers in pieces all through the campaign, so at the KS’s end on Halloween, they’ll have the full text to enjoy (sans final edits and layout and all that good stuff that makes a pile of text into a book)!

Also, as we’ve been doing for quite awhile with our KSs, we’re building a companion book in sections as they are achieved by backer pledges adding up to milestone amounts that fulfill Stretch Goals. These sections are further explorations of ideas from the main book, as well as new topics we think would help the game line – sometimes even from backers who suggest ideas in the Comments section!

In the Monday Meeting today, Matthew Dawkins suggested a couple of things to watch that could get you in a WoD: Ghost Hunters mindset: on Netflix is Bly Manor, a sequel to Haunting of Hill House, and on the BBCi Player there’s the aptly titled Ghost Stories. Matthew suggests both although we’re not sure if everyone can access both of them – guess it depends on your country.

(I won’t be seeing these, though, as it is well known that I’m a-scared of horror films and TV…).

In the weeks to come in the Onyx Path Media section, you’ll be able to find links to several WoD: Ghost Hunters interviews and actual plays, including this interview of Matthew himself:
https://magethepodcast.com/index.php/2020/10/10/world-of-darkness-ghost-hunters-with-matthew-dawkins/

We’re doing our part, too, with next Friday’s drop of the Onyx Pathcast being one the Trios’s patented insightful and incisive Deep Dives all about WoD: Ghost Hunters! Check out Dixie, Matthew, and Eddy, as they explore the info in the book, but also delve into the kind of book it is – a descendant of the old WoD “black books” that dealt with elements of the World of Darkness rather than a specific game line.

Save Against Fear Virtual Con Notes!

This weekend we were part of the Save Against Fear Virtual Convention, a fund-raiser for the Bodhana Group, who are professional therapists that are using tabletop games as therapeutic methods in their efforts. Pretty sure this was my 9th year attending and sponsoring, as I think they are good smart people trying to use our thing to help people. Which is a good thing.

In recent years, I’ve also brought along (conned) Onyx Path folks and we weren’t going to miss it just because circumstances dictated a virtual con. In fact, we kind of like virtual cons – just the no-pants option is a huge thumbs-up!

To start, we had a panel Friday afternoon at 4 where Eddy, Matthew, Dixie, Travis Legge, and myself, reprised the ever-popular What’s Up With Onyx Path? panel we’ve done at so many cons over the years. A lot, A LOT, of silliness went on as we talked current and upcoming projects, and even revealed a hither-to unknown new main rulebook Matthew is working on!

If you missed it, we’ll have it up on our YouTube channel sometime soon!

I couldn’t sit in on any other panels as this weekend was extremely busy for me (including a virtual Zoom-based 40th high school reunion gathering – talk about surreal experiences), but Dixie and Eddy were in on a ton more over the next two days. Here they describe what went on:

Dixie: While I did a few events at SAVE Against Fear this year, I feel like I learned the most from the two panels I moderated, “Consent in Gaming” and “Safety Tools in Gaming.” While they had some overlap in content, the panelists were distinct enough to have different conversations at each. For Safety Tools, I spoke with Crystal Mazur, Sen-Foong Lim, Doug Levandowski, and Travis Legge about the physical or spoken tools (like consent forms, the X card, and lines and veils) you can bring to your gaming table to ensure everyone is having the best possible time and feels safe, no matter how horrifying or emotional your game might be.

For the Consent in Gaming panel, I spoke with Shanna Germain, Sarah Lynne Bowman, Jacqueline Bryk, and John Stavropoulos more about the idea of consent and why it’s important: culturally, at the table, and in our communities. I learned a ton from all the industry professionals I was lucky enough to meet with, and once the videos are up on the Bodhana Group’s YouTube, I’d love to hear what any of you think about the panels!

Eddy: The panels at Save Against Fear 2020 were really great. Unlike other streaming panels, the audience was small, which allowed us to actually directly chat with participants in a way that felt closer to an “in person” convention. Two in particular stand out to me. “2020 A Game Changing Year” was a chance to talk about how recent events have really impacted game design, both on the logistics side (with all the Covid-related slowdowns) and the creative side (as certain game topics become more controversial, even in “traditional” spaces like D&D 5e).

Similarly, the “Accessibility in Gaming” panel was a chance to dig deeper into specifically disability accessibility, both physical and mental disabilities. Every panel had folks with a wide variety of experience, so I felt like I learned more than I taught, which is always an excellent sign.

Panels haven’t previously been a massive part of Save Against Fear, but I really hope the convention will keep them in future, because they were great.

I haven’t heard from the Bodhana Group‘s team as to how the con worked out for them, although I expect to later this week, but am really interested in whether this is something they’d like to do again as we at Onyx Path have been discussing doing another virtual Onyx Path con.

Virtual TableTop!

Introducing a Virtual Tabletop adventure: the Gauntlet of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop!

Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.

Gauntlet of Spiragos is a Scarred Lands adventure designed for 1st level characters, although it can be easily modified for characters of up to 5th level.

Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Get started quickly with built-in support for most popular game systems. Whether you’re brand new to TTRPGs or a veteran tabletop gamer, Astral‘s ease-of-use and built in automation is designed to streamline gameplay.

Astral is browser-based and uses the latest technology to streamline your storytelling experience. Connect with your party online and run your campaigns however you like. Astral offers tools optimized for phone, tablet, and desktop devices, no installation required.

Build epic battlemaps using Astral‘s enormous collection of scenery, props, and tokens or upload your own. Pro users gain access to over 12,000+ assets and fresh new packs every month. Add weather, visual effects, triggers, and so much more with easy-to-use tools

  1. While the art of Aberrant is wonderful and are welcome to have more and more, at same time I really wish the book had less arts so it would be ready to backers eyes.

As all, I can do is wish, I hope we get it soon, and with as much wonderful arts as possible!

  2. Crucible of Legends had been in Manuscript Approval for like 2+ months. I have seen several other white wolf properties move in and out while it’s sat there. Any idea when it may move forward at this point? Really looking forward to it and any other new exalted releases.

    • Manuscript approval isn’t just Paradox approvals- it includes anyone, like other devs or myself, who needs to sign off or request changes. Some books take longer than others. Thanks!

      • Makes sense, since from what I have heard Essence and CoL are basically sister projects in that that they share a number of writers and both teams want them to consistent with each other.

(Annnnnd CoL has the honor of laying out the revised Infernals, Alchemical and what exactly the Getimians are like so no small task.)

  3. So is LET THE STREETS RUN RED out of errata and at the press for publication as a PDF and POD or is it out for errata so you can collect any last minute changes?

  4. Glad to see that the title on “The Faithful Undead” was changed to a more Eddy-friendly Bloody Blood Blood title! Tell Eddy “blood” from me, in honor of Halloween! 😀

Also, that Aberrant art/comic looks amazing! Really looking forward to it!
