Yes, it’s getting chaotic out there – which I don’t really need to tell you folks. Lots of surprises so far this year, with a lot of people in our community reeling from the scariest ones. As a gamer, I’m very glad that we can still try and find some level of relief from reality by stepping into other worlds and characters.

(The rest of the blog in the upper section before the Subtitle is all about biz decisions, so you might want to skip to the fun stuff after the Subtitle. Although there’s biz news there too, so maybe this week you can’t win).

Of course, when you do this thing of ours for a living, it’s a different proposition. We had a comment on last week’s MMN blog about whether we were moving ahead to our traditional printer on Exigents the same as on TC Aether and Scion God: as I had mentioned those two last week.

Which is a fair question, and kudos to that commenter for reading between the lines!

The basic answer is that we’re exploring options, and different printers, because of increased tariffs – and even worse, the very real possibility of even more increased tariffs on books printed outside the US. There is just no way to know how high the extra costs we’ll need to pay will be when the printed books reach the docks here in the US months from now.

But hearing from the news about these plans before the election was over, I held off from OKing sending books to our traditional printers and watched and waited to get some idea of how things would impact us. I’ve talked to other publishers and read about many, many options for some kind of plans that would let us traditionally print without ruining the company. TTRPG income and profit margins are incredibly thin, at least at our size, so us having to pay customs +20% of what we’ve already paid the printer is painful, but +65% or more means we’re putting out books we lose money on.

Ugh. Can’t do that, folks.

And we also can’t sit on projects forever, even though I know to some of you it feels like we do!

So, a few weeks ago, I OK’d the two books I mentioned above to move to traditional printing as normal, but also began talking to other traditional printers around the world with an eye towards finding a nice spot to send Exigents. Still reviewing quotes, and talking to other trad printers, but things look good for Exigents, and maybe a few other books we have ready, to go to press soon.

As always, and certainly very much more so in these chaotic times, all that may be altered as the situations change.

Meanwhile, we’re also cognizant that our company is comprised of creators who are also getting slammed every day by what they are seeing in the news and on their feeds. So part of our meetings have been putting together a non-work online retreat for the Monday Meeting crew. A sort of self-help thing but all play, no work, as a different way to gather together from all of our virtual offices.

This is not something we’ve done for quite a while as a complete group, since we’re even more spread out than back when we could mostly all hang out at conventions, so the need is there – now we just have to figure out the best date to have it!

Oh I have answers, but they’re all of dubious legality.

It was a very helpful meeting today…

Many ideas were advanced and several were actually legal.

First off, we discussed receiving several alerts from DTRPG about physical book PoD prices going up a fair bit for some kinds of books, which is not something they or we are thrilled about, but the way PoD printing works we have to raise our prices if they raise theirs. Where we can, we’ll keep the changes minimal, but the new pricing is slated to roll out April 1, 2025, so if there’s a PoD version of one of our books you’re considering buying, you have a few weeks to order them before prices go up!

Another option is to go for the traditionally printed versions at Studio2 and IPR, if they have the book you’re looking for in stock.

BUT, with an eye towards getting a couple more PoD projects out to you before the deadline, we’re offering two PoD projects this Weds the 12th! Both the Trinity Continuum Tasty Bits Combo collection, and TC: Aegis will be available in both PDF and PoD versions! We were going to stagger their releases, but we wanted to give y’all extra time to get them before April 1.
