First off, big thanks to Eddy Webb, who took over writing up this blog last week: Thanks, Eddy!
In the week I’ve been gone, oh wow did our Scion Mythic Shards crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit leap forward past a whole bunch of Stretch Goals! Congrats to all of our backers – you’ve got some great new stuff to play with!
The four revealed Shard chapters have all been added to the StoryGuide Reference PDF, and you also have unlocked the option to Add-on four sets of dice – one for each Shard so far)!
You’ve also achieved two new Shard chapters to be added to the book itself: Lost Time (From the BK site: Rules for playing a battle for the stability of all realities as Scions slip through the different shards and semi shards trying to thwart a usurper’s plan to invade another reality. Sliders and Doctor Who style adventures with a group of Scions who are selected to be reality police) and the chance to vote on yet another Shard that should remain open until the campaign ends.
Which is going to happen this coming Thursday, the 15th – so if you haven’t backed yet, please do jump in!
Now, what about that fifth Shard chapter, to be revealed this Tuesday – tomorrow as I write this? It is called Space Odyssey, and our devs actually have a lot to share about that fifth Shard:
Take it away, Kim:
Hello from sunny Palau this week!
I’ve been on a journey this month just like we’ve shared with you all with Sion: Mythic Shards. We’ve taken Scions to what remains of the World when the apocalypse has wiped the slate clean and shown alternating timelines where heroism is embraced and rejected. Now we’re taking Scions further than they have ever gone before… into an uncharted sector of space called the Tenebrium. Space Odyssey is our final written shard for Scion: Mythic Shards. We veer our stories into space opera while embracing all there is to love about Scion. Magic and high technology co-exist with impossible seeming space craft and strange alien worlds to explores. What new pantheons can your Scions discover and interact with as they try to find their way home? This is setting rich in possibilities.
I grew up watching Star Trek (Next Gen, Deep Space 9, and Voyager)and Babylon 5 every week with my parents. Star Wars was the favorite with my cousins so space opera is genre close to my heart. I love revisiting my favorite media inspirations when I work on projects but I didn’t have to when I was developing Space Odyssey – I had already written They Came the Interstellar Starship! for the They Came From the RPG Anthology! The universe is vast and yet seems ever so small. I look forward to hearing what new planets, ships, and deities people will dream of in their Space Odyssey games.
Plus, here’s Hiromi with even more in-depth info:
Space Odyssey draws from virtually every space opera you’ve ever heard of and maybe even a few that you haven’t. It is Scion at its most epic scale: an entire universe for your Scions to explore. While there’s always the risk that a meeting with a cosmic entity might go wrong, forcing you to turn to violence, there’s also the possibility of puzzling out the secret motivations behind the entity, allowing Scions to talk the cosmic being down or even prove that the entity isn’t so mysterious or powerful after all! On top of that delicious space opera foundation, we have the myths and legends of our world, but viewed through a sci-fi lens. The Vulpari might resemble the fox-like kitsune of Japanese folklore or the huli jing of Chinese folklore, but they’re their own people, with their own hopes and dreams for life in the Tenebrium’s Worlds. In fact, every folkloric creature might have an analog in the Tenebrium!
In short, Space Odyssey is equal parts space and Odyssey. Homer’s Odyssey may have helped form a kernel of the shard, but there’s much more to do than get lost for a decade. Odysseus has nothing on your spacefaring Scions. Besides, he was mainly concerned with getting home, whereas your Scions might already be home in the Tenebrium.
It’s up to you whether you want your game to be about an epic journey home, making a new life for your Scions in the Tenebrium’s Worlds, improving life in the Tenebrium for everyone, or even making big political plays to shift the balance of power in the Worlds to your advantage. In other words, there are many paths and one grand adventure awaiting you!
Further, Back In the Meeting Again!
Yep, back to the Monday Meeting and we’re still filling in for each other as Eddy and Mirthful Mike take some time off on well-deserved vacays, and then we should be ending the month with everybody in the meeting having had some kind of a break over the Summer. It’s a testament to the in-house team that they have been able to cover each others’ bailiwicks so that none of our projects have been stopped dead in the water!
For example, even while we are still working on ongoing projects, we’ve also be putting out two blog posts a week that reveal more about Curseborne, our new horror game. With our intention of an October Kickstarter campaign looming incredibly quickly ahead, getting these posts out – and the shorts vids that go out on social media with them – has been really important.
Such things involve all of us really. The in-house devs who prepare the blog text; either by snipping from the existing book text, or by writing it themselves, or a bit of both. They involve Mirthful Mike getting us the art for the blogs as per art notes from the devs and Dixie, and my picking which art goes with which blog. I also create the symbols for the Lineage and Families blogs (after a bunch of discussions with Mike, Danielle, and especially Dixie), and make sure that both Ian and Travis have the right art for the right blog, and in Travis’s case, for the short vids he puts together for us.
It’s a full team thing, and we keep a careful eye on who needs to be involved when, so that vacays and cons and other projects don’t derail the Curseborne blog train. (Spreadsheets may be involved.)
This is sort of the rolling reveal of Curseborne bits that will culminate in the October Kickstarter if all goes even close to plan. These are the meatier bits we have always planned to reveal, even as far back as those first short vids that expressed mood more than anything, and even further back to our initial planning from before Covid when we hammered out the major “beats” of the game world.
Of course, it wasn’t called Curseborne then, but we knew there were curses that defined the world. The minor, miss your bus curses, and the grand dramatic supernatural ones that doomed mortals to exist as these various supernatural creatures. The weight and the webbing as these curses entwined and defined and confined our world was there even then. We just had to figure out the best way to describe all that and present it to you.
Now that’s happening!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
A very spooky, scary, ghostly, double feature anniversary Reason To Celebrate this Tuesday, tomorrow as I write this, with the THIRTY (30!) year anniversary of the original Wraith: The Oblivion, and the 15th anniversary of the original publication of Geist: The Sin-Eaters! I am somewhat at a loss for words, in that I have so many memories of the creation of both these games – hanging out in a cemetery in Atlanta with Mark and the other writers as they pulled WtO ideas together, commissioning the cover construction by Henry Higgenbotham, and years later working on GtS-E with what remained of our WW production team as the transmogrification of old WW continued under the CCP deal. Phew! Lots of the River Styx under those bridges!
Small question, Where is Squeak in the Deep companion coming?
If you don’t see a specific project on the MMN blog weekly Progress Report, that’s because there was no notable progress on it that week. Not necessarily “no progress”, just that the process is rolling along. You should be able to see where it was at the end of the previous month, though, by checking out Ian’s monthly Release Round-up, which lists everything we’re working on. Under Project Status Updates!
Our full list of projects will be available monthly on our blog! Check out July’s full list report here: https://theonyxpath.com/release-roundup-july-2024/
