GhOOOOOOst Haunters, er, Hunters! [Monday Meeting Notes]

We’re almost two weeks into the Deluxe WoD20th: Ghost Hunters Kickstarter and it’s getting into the looong plateau before it’s finale on Halloween, October 31st.

What interesting with this KS is that we seem to be surprising folks with what material is being revealed to backers. One backer is interested in the Arcanum. It’s mentioned in there.

Another, the Benandanti and Necromancy.

In there.

Today someone noted Numina in the revealed text, and Matthew mentioned that the team used a lot of the previous WoD material, including WoD: Sorcerer.

So if you still aren’t sure, and/or you haven’t backed one of our KSs for a few years, please do be aware that we have the complete text and are revealing it throughout the course of this Kickstarter. It’s what we do with our KSs now, and means that if you back the project you will be able to see whether you’re favorite stuff is in there.

(And with this team of creators there’s a really solid chance that it will be, as they love working in past WoD material and probably know that world better than our real one!

Now, one way that folks have been a bit confused is the idea that these are Ghost Hunters, not Hunters Hunted hunters or Hunter: The Reckoning hunters. In the first case, we did already do a new HH for the 20th Anniversary line, so this is more something that can complement that book and vice versa. (You can find Hunters Hunted 2 on DTRPG).

In the second case, Hunter: The Reckoning, we wouldn’t get in there and “stealth” a 20th Anniversary take on them – and even if we did, the text for this book went through several approval passes with the crew and Paradox/White Wolf. While we’d love to do a true H:TR 20th Anniversary, we respect Paradox’s right to make the call on whether that’s something they want created by us. So, no sneaking it in. 🙂

Some shorts bits from the meeting today:

Here’s a bit of general Kickstarter news: we’re going to try and have one more KS before the end of the year, or through the end of the year. Everything in the beginning of November is uncertain nationally, so we have to leave some room as we see what actually happens.

Right now, that looks like the Scarred Lands mega-adventure Dead Man’s Rust as it is the most flexible in terms of it not being a license, so no external approval periods; relatively modular, so we can release a bunch of it at once if we need to compress the KS or expand it and subdivide the sections; and it is being developed by Travis Legge, who has both his own skill-set and 5e knowledge, as well as his writing team’s, to draw on if we need any emergency changes due to circumstances outside our control.

(Sorry to bring real-world events into our many worlds of imagination, but as a company we have to deal with these sorts of things as they do impact our hobby).

Here’s a happy bit of info: today is Mirthful Mike Chaney’s wedding anniversary! Congrats, Mike and Di!

There’s also some additional good news for the Mirthful One: Mike Chaney’s new art help. Yep, we have arranged for a bunch of new freelance art directing and layout folks to work with Mike under his direction. We’re hoping this gives us a jumpstart in those areas that have gotten a bit bogged down through no fault of Mike’s.

On the Wikipedia page for “work ethic” there’s a picture of Mirthful Mike, so… just sayin’.

The Prestige Edition Chronicles of Darkness books sale at Indie Press Revolution (IPR) continues and has been so strong that Beast: The Primordial traditional printed hardcovers have sold out, with the first Dark Eras collection right behind with only a few copies left!

https://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Deals-and-Specials/

These are the copies we overprinted after their Kickstarters, and don’t worry, you can still get the PDF and PoD versions at DTRPG.com!

That news is pretty exciting, and I’ve also been having a lot of fun with the concept art work for the peoples for the fantasy MMO half of Trinity Continuum: Anima. I need to come up with their look in order to then create the thumb-nail sketch of the cover of TC: Anima to get to the cover artist.

Since the fantasy world they live in is at its heart an MMO, we’re looking at needing a consistent look for the player character and PC peoples, the various flora and fauna, all of it. In ways we haven’t really approached for years! Which is a lot of fun to work on!

Of course, we always love creating new worlds – and we actually have many more that we will be revealing as time goes on into 2021. Because, after all, we love creating them and then inviting you into our:

Virtual TableTop!

Introducing a Virtual Tabletop adventure: the Gauntlet of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop!

Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.

Gauntlet of Spiragos is a Scarred Lands adventure designed for 1st level characters, although it can be easily modified for characters of up to 5th level.

Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

More of a commemoration, and one I usually skip for these but today the anniversary lands right on today. Nine years ago was the infamous Black Wednesday at CCP/White Wolf when a very large swathe of the employees working on the WoD MMO were fired, a group with a large percentage of folks who had been hired into the original White Wolf. The fact that in a couple of months it will be the 9th anniversary of the founding of Onyx Path Publishing is entirely coincidental. Not.

  1. So I was soooooooooooo very much hoping that Trinity Continuum: Adventure! would be the next Kickstarter. I mean I get why its not, but I was hoping nonetheless. 🙂

Is “They Came From [Classified]!” the actual title or are you doing the whole not answering thing.

Cause I hope its the title, there is soooo much potential with that being the focus of the game.

So the more I hear things about Prometheus Unbound (was Psi Orders) the more I am really looking forward to it. One element I heard is that it provides information on using psi powers for between the dot rating things (like how x power could be used in other ways) and that sounds really awesome.

As an aside so pod copies of Vampire the Masquerade 20th, Dark Age Vampire 20th, and Mage the Awakening 2nd just arrived. I LOVE them all. (I am kind of sad I didn’t jump into Mage 2nd earlier, but I had reasons, reasons which turned out to be unfounded.)

It does lead me to wonder something, was Vampire Masquerade 20th a direct White Wolf project or a precurser Onyx Path project. It doesn’t really matter, but I was curious.

One thing I will say is I like the structure of Dark Ages a bit more than of the general Masquerade book. hehe

Oh. One more thing. I LOVE how you guys do your table of contents now. They are actually really useful and informative, unlike say in the 90s when its chapter title but nothing about what is in it. I like nice meaty table of contents.

Okay, this is the last thing. Ghost Hunters on Kickstarter. The information on Numina (I forgot for a moment that covers all powers in the old WoD and not just spirit powers) is awesome and something I really want to here. Your mention about putting in WOD Sorcerer stuff and psychic power stuff has me grinning in glee.

So yeah, I am eagerly awaiting that chapter.

Okay, was just about to post this and then I noticed “TC Aeon Terra Firma – POD files uploaded” and that means it looks like I will be ordering that book in pod soon. hehe

V20’s deluxe edition came out in September 2011, with the regular edition dropping in October 2011. Onyx Path wasn’t really a thing until January 2012.

        • Yep! Back then I was mostly on the fan side, and I ran Wolfspoor for a good long while, but it’s been gone for years now.

Justin hired me on V20 to do some transcription, so I’m also on the credits page. Both ends of things helped me get my foot in the door when Onyx Path was in the early stages. 🙂

    • Can’t tell you more, it’s [Classified].

Like Ian mentions, V20 was created inside WW/CCP when a group of us realized it was coming up to the 20th anniversary and proposed doing something nice for the fans of VtM. Part of the pitch was that such a product might engender good will for what everyone hoped would be the audience for the WoD MMO. So, not an Onyx Path project, but it did do a couple of great things. 1- set the stage for the rest of the 20th Anniversary books that Onyx Path _would_ publish, and 2- working on V20 doing the art direction and layout reminded me of how much I enjoyed and missed making TTRPG books. An important step towards founding Onyx.

      ToCs- I agree.

Glad to hear the rest of your excitement over what we’re doing!

  2. I am so glad that Onyx Path exists. That you did what you did. Its sad what happened but out of that came a company that is basically brilliant in pretty much every way.

So a toast to Onyx Path and nearly nine, and hopefully many more, years of amazing products!

  4. So this is the closest we’ll get to an Sorcerer 20th? I’d pay fat cash for a Sorcerer 20th that’s. They’re such a cool and under used part of WoD, which is a shame cause Mage brings up how important they are to the Traditions and Technocrats.

    Really love the Products.

Wish for at least 10 more years of products and many new worlds!
    A couple of questions.

    1. Can i upgrade my pledge in a kickstarter after it ended? Got the basic one in contagion chronicle and really want to update to the book reward level.

    2. Is Vampire the Requiem 2ed Line considered complete? There is nothing in the status updates for a new book in that game line.

    3. Is there any consideration to convert Chronicles of Darkness to the excellent Storypath system? Maybe a third edition general convertion book.

Thanks in advance for any answer!

    Reply
    • I can answer two of those!

      1. I believe as long as the BackerKit is open you can add some add-ons. You can’t change your pledge, though, since we need those numbers in order to determine things like print runs and overall shipping cost.

      3. No consideration, as Storypath is owned by Onyx Path and Chronicles of Darkness is owned by White Wolf. Better to keep those pieces separate.

      Reply
    • Eddy covers most of it, with the exception that you can actually upgrade your pledge in BackerKit until it is closed for upgrades/changes to your pledge. So you can upgrade from a PDF pledge to a physical copy pledge. That sort of thing.

As Dixie has mentioned in our various Q&As, it’s not really up to us to determine the releases for WW IP game lines. We pitch and it’s up to Paradox/WW to give the green light to go further. But, in general, we haven’t “zeroed out” any lines.

As for Storypath being brought into any of the WW IPs, Eddy nails it with mention of keeping our IPs separate. End of the day, if we decide on doing a horror or dark or urban fantasy line with Storypath, it will be something we create ourselves.

      Thanks!

  6. I gotta say Outside of WoD and Exalted I’m most interested in Assassins and I hope every week its moved somewhere in development.

  7. I agree with Carl both your own game lines and the stuff you do with Paradox/WW is phenomenal!!!

Question on Kickstarter – is there any way to “late pledge” a Kickstarter that was missed. This truly has been a challenging year and I’d love to late pledge for DemiGod

    • Keep watching the project progress reports each week and you’ll see it getting nearer to release and then one week it will! No worries! Thanks!
