Like Moths to a Flame! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Scion: God Companion art by HIVE

The title is how we’re hoping to draw people to the final week and a half of the Curseborne Player’s Guide Kickstarter! As I (also this is Dixie, hello!) type this, we’re just under 1,000 backers, and just under 200% funded, both things I think we can achieve by the end of this campaign!

As I’m sure you know, the Player’s Guide has new Families, along with tons of play advice, a template for making characters quickly, and information on venators and new Paths, Torments, and spells! We’ve been really excited about the response to the core Curseborne manual, and we hope you check out this expansion.

Our meeting was short-ish today, as we were down a few people for various reasons (nothing bad!), but that also meant we were able to move quickly through our production reports and the like, which frees up more time for us to work on books! As you’ll see in the report below, Matthew and I have gathered writers for Seattle: City of Curses, the sourcebook we announced earlier this year, and I’m very excited to go back to one of my favorite places I’ve ever lived and populate it with stranger people, places, and things thank the ones I used to hang out with, which is honestly saying something.

(I’m also writing this approximately five hours before the Seahawks game tonight, so I want to make it clear that I don’t want them to be cursed!)

Here’s a quick Curseborne Player’s Guide update from Eddy Webb!

Hey Cursed people! We’re in the middle of our usual slow period of the crowdfunder, but there’s still steady growth and we’ve unlocked a few stretch goals, which is always exciting to see! It’s great we’re going to get a couple more fiction stories for Curseborne, because I’ve been heads down working with the team to get the first anthology together, and it should be going out to backers of last years’ campaign very soon!

Speaking of stories, that’s one thing I love about Curseborne: there’s so much story to dig into, even the people who are firmly against the Accursed. The Venators have been a hot topic of interest to people since we mentioned them in the core rulebook, and it’s been so cool to make them a playable option in the Player’s Guide. Here’s a small tease about how things work from their perspective.

A Quick Rundown

First a quick rundown of the Venators and what we do. Then we can do a Q&A if you like.
Let’s start with who we are. So, you’ve heard of ghost hunters and mediums: People who seek out the supernatural, catalogue it, or post it on the internet for views. They’re hunters, sure, but they aren’t Venators. We’re chosen to hunt. It starts with a single target. And if you are successful, you get more. If you fail, usually you die, but sometimes it just nags you for the rest of your life like a hobby you were once obsessed with and now can’t bear to discard. It fills your closets, takes up space in your home, and there’s a constant reminder of it every day.

We don’t know how people are chosen. Some Operations have theories about who chose them and why, but it seems so random to me. All we know is if you follow the thread to its conclusion, you find another thread waiting for you to pick up the next day. That’s where you are now. Waiting for your next thread.
I don’t know how else to describe it. You get a feeling something isn’t right, so you follow your hunches, pick up the clues, and the trail leads you to your quarry. It’s a monster, and when you kill it, the feeling goes away for a short time. Your duty is complete, and you’ve paid your dues to whatever or whomever was guiding your hand. Needless to say, where you find the unexplained, the strange, and the inexplicable, you find monsters. Not all these things yield hunts, but you’d be surprised how much supernatural crap is in this world, right under your nose.

But on from Curseborne and over to our Scarn correspondent in the field, Travis Legge!

I wanted to take a moment to talk about the Scarred Lands Player’s Guide for Savage Worlds Kickstarter. First of all, I want to thank everyone who has shown their support for this campaign so far! We funded in under four hours and have already unlocked our first Stretch Goal, which is incredibly exciting! As of this writing, we’re less than $200 from unlocking our next Stretch Goal, so if you’ve not yet had the chance to check out the campaign, I’d love it if you’d give it a look and back the campaign or help spread the word to others who might enjoy it.

We’ve got two events coming up this week to help promote the Scarred Lands Player’s Guide for Savage Worlds Kickstarter. On Thursday at 1 PM EDT our friends at Dork Tales are hosting Scarred Lands: Cities in Dust, an actual play set on the wasteland continent of Asherak! Kickstarter backers have gotten a couple backer-only looks at Asherak already, and this actual play will follow a group of heroes as they contend with the dangerous terrain and uncover the truth behind one of Asherak’s greatest mysteries! This game will be run by Travis Legge and features Dixie Cochran among the cast. Session zero is already up on the Dork Tales YouTube channel and you can watch session 1 live on Thursday at https://twitch.tv/dorktales!

On Friday at 1 PM EDT GM Alain Giorla will lead a group of adventurers on the continent of Termana in an adventure entitled Scarred Lands: Hammer and Blood! This will be a session zero in which the party will create their characters from a list of ancestries found on Termana. Scarred Lands: Hammer and Blood will be broadcast on https://twitch.tv/theonyxpath, so be sure to tune in and see the first steps of this adventure!

As you saw above, I’m going to be playing in the actual play on Dork Tales for the next three weeks and I get to be a Piterin, which is a BAT PERSON. I’m so excited, y’all.

Also, don’t for get that we’re having an Onyx Path AMA over at r/WhiteWolfRPG on Friday 24th October at 12:00 EDT.

We’ll answer questions about anything, but our focus will be on Exalted Infernals. We’ll have links up on our social media as the week progresses!

Since Rich isn’t here to do it, I want to wish a very happy birthday to Lisa Thomas! She works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep Onyx Path running, and she’s also just a delightful human being who always brings me cookies at conventions (specifically this one kind of pumpkin cookie she found out I had a weakness for). Happy birthday, Lisa! I hope you had a fantastic one!

  1. Hello there 🙂
Is Seattle by Night going contain pointers on how to develop your own city as well, like Damnation City did for Chronicles of Darkness?

  2. After listening to Danielle’s interview, I am incredibly excited for Seattle.
The thought of a city book that is also about teaching you how to build your own city is incredibly cool. Especially in SPU where each locale could have suggestions for enhancements and complications

  3. What about Realms of Pugmire, Scion: Titans Rising & Titanomancy, Curious Cats of Mau, The World Below, At The Gates, Scion: Mythic Shards, Trinity Continuum: Aegis, & the Trinity Continuum Player’s Guide?

Can we add another section to the Monday Meeting Notes for the completed projects that haven’t gone to print yet? I know James does the monthly updates on the associated crowd-funder pages, but they seem forgotten here.
