It is Valentines Day, after all!
But we DO love M20, and all of our many, many game lines – so this is a good day to say it again. To remind ourselves what got us into this wacky biz, and why we keep making new books and settings! And to remind ourselves that we are only one small percentage of all the folks worldwide who love these game worlds!
Diving in specifically, we, of course, find that we’re all loving the M20 Lore of the Traditions Kickstarter – which is in its last few days! We’re hoping that these last few days, always an energized time for our Kickstarters, can propel M20 Lore of the Traditions right past 400% funded, and even more importantly, past the last of the Stretch Goals that allow us to create two more M20 supplements!
There are a ton of Actual Plays and interviews out there, and linked on the KS page, as well as two weeks of Onyx Pathcast roundtables hosted by Matthew Dawkins with as many M20 developers and writers as he could fit! You can tell in these conversations just how much these folk love to work on and play Mage, even when they drift off on a best hamburger tangent for a couple of minutes!
We’ve been thrilled at the response to the more in-depth looks at the Trads that make up this book – as delivered every couple of days to our backers – and how the KS commenters have been by-and-large constructive and creative with their commentary. Thanks, gang!
Now let’s get out there and try and induct new members into your favorite Tradition!
Or, at least introduce more folks to the Kickstarter! 🙂
Speaking of KSs: in our meeting today, I was reminded that tomorrow, Tuesday the 15th, is the 10 year anniversary of our very first Kickstarter campaign!
Yep, for V20 Companion.
So there I was, there I was, there I was…talking to Justin Achilli, who was freelance developing the book, and we were frustrated because my wee lil’ TTRPG publishing company, only in its first months, couldn’t afford to give the book a leatherette and embossed cover that matched V20 itself.
Yet, there was this new, to us, crowd-funding platform that one of our friends from CCP North America loved to back projects on, and which we’d seen a few of our TTRPG pals, like Matt Forbeck, create successful campaigns for. It was still the Wild West over there in Kickstarter-land, but maybe, just maybe, if enough V20 fans were into the idea and pledged…we could make our deluxe cover for the book.
So I dove right in and started the page and did all the building of it with really, very little idea of what we were getting into. Got quotes, figured out a break even point for how many pledges we needed to pay for the covers, and so figured out how to charge for it. Stretch Goals didn’t even exist yet as a concept, I think, and Reward Tiers were really rudimentary.
But we did it, and we went live, and hoo boy! the excitement from the fans, and the angry yelling from CCP. You see, they, as a group, had no idea what Kickstarter was. There were, let us say, “accusations”. It was strongly suggested to me that I prepare a document explaining why Kickstarter was a viable idea, which I did – two and a half pages that focused less on the money, and more on what Justin and I had observed and valued: the way Kickstarter backers became a community.
Now, hilariously, several years later I found myself seated at a party next to one of the loudest and angriest of the execs, who straight up admitted that going to Kickstarter was “brilliant” and he apologized – just a bit – for how he’d reacted before. Which, you know, was very nice.
For Onyx Path, though, it was just the beginning of a part of our efforts that we continue to hone to this day, and which I bet will continue to evolve.
DID YOU KNOW IT’S THE MONDAY LUNCH MEETING?
I’m reminded of this because during our meeting today, Dixie couldn’t answer a question right away because she was eating, which is fair – this Monday Meeting that I pull the blog from was originally the Production Monday Lunch Meeting. So yes, folks can certainly eat during it!
In fact, back when my Production department at White Wolf all gathered around the big table in the game library, it was after we had gone out to Subway to pick up our lunches, and we all sat there gorging on subs while conducting the meeting. We had to have Subway because Josh Timbrook loved his Subba-wubba on Mondays. (We did shoehorn in alternative take-out, but mostly it was Subba-wubba). (And Josh loved them any day, not just Mondays).
What I’m saying is, good for Dixie – upholding the tradition!
Of course, that was way before the start of Onyx Path, but we still meet every Monday at Onyx. For 10 years, in fact!
Which is my incredibly smooth segue into mentioning that we are still celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Onyx Path with a 10% sale this week of Wraith20th and Changeling: The Dreaming20th PDFs. (But not Ghost Hunters, because its KS backers haven’t received their books yet). All week both lines’ PDFs are 90% off, and our friends at IPR continue their 20% sale of physical WoD 20th books. These are the Deluxes and such that were printer overruns from their Kickstarters, so there aren’t a lot left of any of them!
Plus, we’ll be ending the month with Mage20 PDFs on sale, so keep an eye out for that and if you are a M20 Lore of the Traditions backer – be sure that you note James’ updates about the sale! We’re doing these sales so that we have a very focused way to show how much we love our community, we don’t want any backers feeling less than thrilled!
Just a couple of other things this week: we talked about Virtual Cons – in this case our own in June and the Gen Con virtual con. Still looking at what sort of panels we should run, and who can do which ones. We don’t want to just duplicate all our panels, so what should we focus on at each of the cons?
Finally, if you’ve not checked out the bi-weekly Lunch and Crunch (speaking of themes, maybe I should have gone with Lunch as a theme this week instead of Love) on Twitch, featuring our own Eddy Webb and Danielle Lauzon going in-depth over the Storypath System and the games that it powers.
They’ve just posted the YouTube version of their first show, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu8sd8i40d8&t=880s
And their third show focused on “genre conventions” will be Tuesday the 15th at Noon EST. These two absolutely love to talk TTRPG systems, and know Storypath inside and out, but are always focused on how a rule plays, and how it engages with the setting – well worth a peek!
That’s does it for this very special lovey-dovey edition of the MMN blog. Talk to you next week as I have for over:
Ten Years, Many Worlds, One Path!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
Happy Valentines Day! It might only be a holiday made up by a card company, but it’s still nice to get that heart emoji, that extra smile, that bouquet, those couples matching yachts – whatever! And if you haven’t received anything yet, well, here’s a heart from us just for reading this blog: We love ya!
RichT,may i request the exigent kickstarter t be next one? it’d make me so happy if had exigents this month
Totally appreciate your excitement, it’ll be soon. If not the very next one, it’ll be soon after! Hang in there!
I know what you stated is not binding in anyway but that reply makes me soooo happy!
Glad to hear it!
How much longer for Hunter the Vigil 2.0
If you’re referring to the printed KS rewards, that’s going to depend on when the printer can give us a print slot, as per what I and James have been letting backers know about the situation.
I actually meant the POD through DTRPG
No worries! Need to get the PoD proof from DTRPG- guess it depends on the mail at this point.
Have a merry VD! And here’s to Exigents! ?
You too!
Ooo hly Shit new Mage: the Awakening? I am pumped!
Me too! Looking forward to seeing this come out!
Just to be clear, will M20 The Rich Bastard’s Guide to Magick be included in the Mage sale? I’m happy to add it to my Lore of the Traditions pledge, otherwise, and I would totally understand if it were not included in the sale, as it is such a new release.
You’re right, it won’t be in the sale because it’s too new. We feel like folks who bought the PDF just a while ago deserve a bit of time before we put it out with a sale.
Thanks for the reply. I can totally understand that and have added it to my pledge for the KS.
Happy to see more TC: Aberrant coming our way!
Oh, there’s plenty more a-comin’!
So happy to see tome of the pentacle getting closer to finishing!
Delighted to finally see some movement on Tome of the Pentacle! Looking forward to forking over some cash for it.
The update describes it as being in “Final Draft”. In terms of comparison with other projects in the pipeline, I assume this is actually “Second Draft”?
It’s a catchall for any drafts after the first one. Usually, a second one is enough, but sometimes we need more than that.
[insert joy icon here] Tome of the Pentacles moving
[YAY!]
A new Aberrant book?
You have my axe!
They call him…the Lumberjack! Master of the mystic axe!
I see the notice on the Scion character sheets for apps like Fantasy grounds and Roll20 are coming soon, any chance for “They Came From” sheets as well?
Ultimately, we expect the Storypath games’ sheets up on all the VTT venues.
RichT, I’m curious; if Exigents isn’t the next Kickstarter (an outcome I’m very much for, by the way), what will the next project potentially be?
Two answers, but neither are absolute answers. One, you can see what we’re prepping for by looking at the Jan progress report and the ones so far in Feb, so those would be the most likely, and two, we’ll let you know on the MMN as soon as it’s set.
By progress reports, you mean the past Monday Meeting notes?
Yes, and the comprehensive one that will be posted at the end of every month. I included a link to January’s in this week’s blog.
