Thrilled to be able to say that the Kickstarter for the Deluxe M20 Lore of the Traditions starts this Tuesday, the 18th of January, at 2pm EST!
The thrill really comes from the fact that we weren’t sure we’d be able to even do another M20 book, but the gang at Paradox were cool with it – so here we come!
Our team have done a great job of breaking out each Tradition into its own focused chapter, and really digging into all the lore for each one going all the way back to first edition – in proper 20th Anniversary style! Of course, you’ll get the chance to read through those chapters once you back, so I’m sure the comments will fly hot and heavy.
Mage: The Ascension fans being so shy and retiring, you know!
Like I like to do in the first MMN talking about a new crowd-funding campaign, is relate to the start of the project, and/or of the game line. In Mage‘s case, it was the first of the WoD first edition core books I was able to visually design and art direct from the start and see through to publication, so the game always has a special place in my heart.
While the writing was being fought over, we quickly saw the gold and purple coloring as the main theme visually, and we had Joshua Gabriel Timbrook’s concept sketches to help narrow down the visuals for each Tradition. After designing the symbols for Vampire: The Masquerade 2nd Edition, Mage 1st Edition got both Tradition symbols and two-page spreads for each Tradition right from the get-go.
We were actually waiting for Josh to deliver his final inked Tradition piece of art for those two-page spreads as the Fedex truck pulled up. Josh needed to finish inking and we had to drop the art into the layout – and then get the physical page files in a big package out to the printer. But the Fedex guy had a route and a timetable. Fortunately, Chris McDonough and Travis Williams, and I think Stew Wieck himself, were able to talk (and talk and talk) the driver into hanging out until we had the package ready!
So you see, a lot of blood, sweat, and even tears (of frustration, at least), went into that first pass on the Traditions – and here we are able to present this latest – potentially the ultimate – depiction of them all with M20: Lore of the Traditions!
Tradition Says We Had A Meeting Today…
…which we have done for pretty much every Monday for a decade!
Today, in addition to the Kickstarter review and talk, we also ran through the 10th Anniversary focus on Dystopia Rising: Evolution this month. More things coming, like the DR:E fiction anthology An Exquisite Corpse going on sale on Wednesday, and our Onyx Pathcast crew focusing on Zombie media and DR:E in this upcoming Friday’s show.
Of course, the big news is that the DR:E core book PDF is now on sale for 10% of its cover price in honor of the 10th Anniversary:
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/283402/Dystopia-Rising-Evolution
That 90% off, btw. And we are doing the same with the rest of the DR:E books starting next week – except for An Exquisite Corpse, because that’s new and only getting released this week. Plus, our friends at Studio2 also have the traditionally printed hardcover core book and Screen on sale over at their site! Check it out below under Studio2!
Then next month, we’ll do more celebration, but with a different game line. Each month, all through the year!
We’re starting to set up the panels and games we’ll be officially running at the 3rd Onyx Path Virtual Convention, and we are really just starting to discuss that. So now is a good time, if you have any suggestions, to please feel free to make them! Here in the comments, on our Discord, or any of our other social media venues. We love knowing what you’re interested in!
Speaking of other online media, there’s a new Twitch show that Eddy and Danielle Lauzon are doing together called Lunch and Crunch! Its first show is Tuesday the 18th at 12 noon EST, and in it they will focus their game-making and system-crunching powers to look at Storypath System game design. It promises to be an in-depth but irreverent dialogue between two of the most experienced Storypath designers we have!
And with that, I am outta here until next week or I see ya at the M20 Lore of the Traditions KS! Until either of those occur, thanks for joining us for:

No one knows how long it’s been since the world was blasted with nuclear radiation and became infested with undead. The survivors of the Fall were the first strain of deviation from the human condition and were able to make it through the rapidly spreading epidemic. Finding a community of decent size in this world is rare; finding one with any concept of equality or morality is rarer still.
Oh, and people have the unnerving ability to come back from the dead, regrown from the very virus that destroyed the world. Over the course of these 16 stories, learn what it’s like to live in a devastated world populated with the undead. Welcome to the Evolution.
Remember: the Pre-Order page for Trinity Continuum: Assassins is open on DTRPG! https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/379041
Conventions!
Because dates for physical conventions are subject to change due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, we don’t yet have a list of upcoming physical conventions. Instead, keep an eye out here for more virtual conventions we’re going to be involved with!
Right now, we’re planning our first plans for the 3rd Onyx Path Virtual Con later this year. Can we pull it all together a third time? Wait and see!
And now, the new project status updates!
Our full list of projects will be available monthly on our blog!
Development Status from Eddy Webb!
(Here are the projects that moved to the next stage of production):
Second+ Draft
TC: Aberrant – With Great Power
- Eddy: Some personal problems delayed things, but now things are moving ahead to final drafts.
Manuscript Approval
Scion 2e – No Gods, No Masters
- Eddy: Writers kept falling off this project, which delayed things, but we now have enough of the manuscript in hand that we can start approving it.
Editing
TC: Core – (Tasty Bit) Polyphemus
- Eddy: Asked for a moderately-large rewrite to help dial in the material, and the team knocked it out of the park! It’s zooming through milestones now.
Indexing
Hunter: The Vigil 2e
- Dixie: Hunter: The Vigil 2e’s index came in over the weekend and once again Sarah Herrick has done an amazing job! We rely on our indexers to organize the information in the back of the book in an accessible way, and their work is as important as any other step in the process. (Also, they almost always catch a few typos we and the errata process didn’t!)

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
Here in the US, today we have a national holiday honoring the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.. We celebrate his efforts during his life, and the man whose “legacy’s call is clear: deliver justice for the poor, protect those targeted by hate, defend the freedom to vote, and demand that our leaders fight current malice as the best bulwark against future harm.” It’s also the late Betty White’s birthday, which a lot of people are celebrating, too, it seems.
Has Kickstarter given up on Blockchain then?
They’re not using it yet, and certainly not this coming month.
Doesn’t look good for Chronicles fans after the Kickstarters are out. Does Paradox have a blog for it?
What in today’s blog leads you to that conclusion?
It just seems like there’s been less mentions of new stuff for Chronicles. At the 10th year Anniversary Newscast, not a word of it. And “You have to ask Paradox” has been the response for anything about it, but no one is mentioned at Paradox to ask and even when things happen like vtubers playing Hunter the Vigil, Paradox’s WoD influencers just come in and recommend Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition.
There’s obviously good reason for slowdowns in a pandemic with price hikes for printing. But “You’ll have to ask Paradox” is starting to read like “Try thoughts and prayers.”
Sure, I understand what you mean, but none of that springs out of anything new, or anything posted on the blog today. The advice we’ve been giving you, is the best we have to give, and still applies.
I’m always torn between being a negative Nelly on CoD, and staying positive based on what’s still in the pipeline (Kith and Kin being a big one for me). It’s disappointing there was nothing about it in the Anniversary newscast, but here’s hoping CoD will have a month dedicated to it as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations!
CofD will absolutely have a month dedicated to it!
It would be nice to know who at Paradox to reach out to and how to contact them. Scouring their websites I haven’t been able to find any email addresses that look relevant.
Good question. I certainly don’t have a customer-facing email address for anybody there, so I suggest that anybody wanting to contact them use social media. Hope that helps!
As a person who got their start on the World of Darkness with CoD, I look forward to that 90% off sale to finish catching up my library. If M20 hits that sale as well, I’ll be a very happy player with all of the mage I could ever want. I absolutely love magic systems, and the lore that comes with the mage magic system really is enjoyable for both series. I hope you guys can continue to work on it. I don’t know if I’ll be able to back the M20 book, but I have all the plans to back the Exigents book so… Either way, you guys will be the first kickstarter I’ve backed in my life. Either way, bad ramble aside, keep being awsome.
What is “ TCFGtG!?” I’m not sure what that acronym stands for.
It’s a typo. Fixed now.
Prometheus Unbound! Huzaah & hooray! (I’ve been looking forward to this one, can you tell?)
It’s a really good one!
Just curious why there wasn’t a Lore of the Tribes book for Werewolf? With Lore of the Clans and now Traditions I figured WtA would have gotten one too being part of the main 3.
Was it due to lack of interest or just couldn’t get approved by Paradox?
Basically, we ran out of time on W20 with W5 being worked on and Apocalyptic Record is a great book to finish up on.
I’m super hyped for Prometheus Unbound. Everything I’ve heard of it makes me want to read it.
Just a couple of days and you can!
Just over here counting money and waiting for the EX3 Exigents Kickstarter…and hoping the next book lands on the schedule somewhere soon.
And we’re over here getting art for the Exigents KS, so…soon!
Implying from the fact you said you ran out of time on W20 to make Lore of the Tribes. It gives an impression if Paradox is working on a 5th ed of a system you can not keep working on that 20th edition, presumably due to licensing.
Does that mean we have hope for more books in the later series getting more 20ed books.
Such as Guide to the Guilds, or KoE 20?
You are free to infer anything you want, certainly that’s a beloved and much used right of the internet. But I’m not going to speculate in public, I’ll announce things when they happen – like always!
Hi Rich
If Paradox allows it I would love to see M20 Sorcerers Crusade or M20 Dark Ages added to the list of upcoming projects.
Both are super ideas, we’ll have to see what else we can do with M20 once this KS and it’s stretch goals are revealed!
2024…? Man, I love me some Onyx Path games, but 2 years? I have friends that still make jokes cause I tried to get them interested in Ex3 before the book came out. Scion, also on a multi year rotation so no one wants to touch it. I think I end up backing more Op kickstarters now becuase I want the books.
Because there is no way in hell I can get excited about some new Op publication and then try to share that hype with others. Two years from now, our gaming group is lucky to plan something two months from now… I know I want the book and I am pretty sure I will end up backing the ks, but will I ever play a game using said book? I look at my never been touched copies of Ex3/Dragonborn/Lunars and really wonder. Is it worth it? Ya. Is there no more effecient way to get a book made…?
I’m thinking that what you are looking for with crowd-funding and how we use it are pretty different. Maybe getting your crew excited about a game needn’t be tied to our crowd-funding campaigns, but to when the MMN notes says that the book is in PoD review or in Layout or something far further into the process. Dunno if changing that emphasis might be helpful, but it’s a thought.
I mean, we were really rolling through the deliveries of our KSs before Covid hit, and we were delivering much earlier than the two year estimate we have to give KS. But now, I’m glad we gave them so far out because the hit to our processes we took because of what was happening with our creators, and then the hit we took last year when our printer was just totally jammed up by supply and personnel shortages, really screwed that whole time-frame. Also, we are still delivering the PDF and often the PoDs way before the traditionally printed books, not to mention providing the full text before the KS is over for those who want to get playing right away, or at least sooner.
Happy 100th, Betty!

Whatever happened to Crucible of Legends?
Devs are currently working on the artnotes…
