Making It To 250! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Boom!

Just in the year we’re all celebrating Onyx Path‘s 15th year in business, our home country is going us quite a bit bigger with 250 years of existence! Y’know, on this coming Saturday, July 4th.

I’d like to be here in less “interesting times”, but there you go.

It was great to come back from vacay (big thanks! to Dixie for filling in with this blog last week!) to see how well all of our projects are going, and to hear that the dreadful and dangerous heat in the UK and EU was easing off. Both Eddy and Matthew had to try and stay focused on their many projects during the sweltering heat, and that’s just not easy to do! End of the day, the last thing we at Onyx Path want is our folks putting themselves in danger for any reason, and punishing weather is not something you can bargain with!

Pugmire Unleashed art by Navella Studio

Here are just a few points that came up while I was gone in various places online and at the Origins Game Fair:

1- We continue to be against the use of AI to generate art and writing, in particular. If you are posting material on our social media, please do try and find out if it has been AI-generated before posting, and please be aware that we’re not going to give anything questionable the benefit of the doubt and will remove it, in the interests of caution. We can be wrong, and are willing to review those decisions, but we’ll need something that proves whatever it was isn’t from an AI.

2- Fifteen years ago, I signed a licensing contract that allowed Onyx Path to create TTRPGs for the World of Darkness, New World of Darkness (called Chronicles of Darkness, now), and Exalted. We are still creating and publishing Exalted projects via that license. We _did_ create a whole lot of WoD and CofD projects, but have not for several years. This was the decision of Paradox, who owns those properties, and not ours here at Onyx Path.

Maybe they’ll decide otherwise some day, but for now, we legally can’t put out anything without Paradox‘s OK. Which is fine, because we could not create and publish anything without CCP‘s approval when they owned the original White Wolf properties either, as that’s how licenses work.

And look, I know most of you folks reading this already know these facts, but you’d be surprised at the number of times in just the last coupla weeks that we’ve been accused of wrecking CofD so we could create Curseborne (we didn’t), or that we had something to do with something in WoD5 that somebody didn’t like (we haven’t created and/or published anything WoD5 since our well-received run of books in the first year or so of VtM5‘s life-cycle). I’m bringing it up here so that if you do see folks making these sorts of statements, now you can refer them back here for the straight facts of the matter!

3- We have not been bought, Eddy Webb does not own Onyx Path (nor DTRPG, for that matter), and we have not secretly been owned all along by another company. Onyx Path has been fiercely independent for over 15 years now. It’s just us, gang – the people you see mentioned each week along with hundreds of freelance talents around the world! Just some kooky kids tryin’ to make it in the cruel world of TTRPGs!

Speaking of which, here’s one of them now to tell us about what’s on our Twitch channel this week, our very own Travis Legge:

This week we have a brand new episode of Curseborne – Accursed In Boston coming at 7 PM EDT on Wednesday as Awkward GM Corbin continues his tale! On Thursday at 3 PM EDT Storyguide Tom Murr returns with more Guiding the Path, sharing his insights on running games with Storypath Ultra!

Thanks, Travis!

Also on the programming front, the team at Tales of Pantheons have put together a vid where they play around with the Scion Nexus on Demiplane. It’s a great video about how to use the platform: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F9_lXyOhfE

Thanks for doing that, ToP!

And there you go for this week’s MMN blog! Please stay cool and get plenty of water if you’re in the heat; please take care of your pets with all the boom-booms near the 4th that they might be dealing with if you’re in the US; please find the time to have fun playing games – any games; and please take a moment and be kind – to yourself, your significant other or others, a friend, or even a stranger.

Let’s add some plusses to the ledger here in the real world, and then in our:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

As mentioned above, this coming Saturday is the 4th of July holiday here in the US and it’s the 250th anniversary of our county’s founding, so it means a lot to US folks – for a variety of reasons and not all of them about having fun, having a party, and firing off legal (and illegal) fireworks! Also, yesterday Mel Brooks turned 100 years old – which is also an anniversary to celebrate!

    • Yes. We don’t include every project that we are working on every week unless it moves from one stage to the next. Check out Impish Ian’s monthly status report blog for the more complete list – June’s should be out today or tomorrow!

  1. …I am suddenly extremely baffled by the presence of the rumors mentioned at the start of this blog. I have heard something /vaguely/ along the lines of “OPP did some of the infamous stuff from 5e” from a tiny game store’s owner once but I just wrote that off as someone with an extremely unusual opinion. I didn’t know that was to whatever extent a misconception beyond one odd take.

    • Hey, think of how we feel – there’s plenty of biz reasons to not want to be confused with another company, nevermind several, but it also stings creatively and because we really take pains to explain and debunk this sort of stuff here and on our social media. But it keeps coming up. More than one person has recently mentioned avoiding Curseborne because they were stung by CofD stopping; yet we, the creators of CB, had nothing to do with that decision, plus we own CB so it’s not going to be stopped!

  2. Good morning 🙂
Will Curseborne Compact Edition contain more than “merely” the Curseborne base ruleset in condensed form? I backed the normal Corebook already and now I am unsure about buying that one – other than to scratch that itch to keep things that I really like complete in my collection 😀

    • This is Matthew’s response when previously asked: A condensed, streamlined version of Curseborne just containing the objective details from the game. All the system you need and all the playable options in a tighter, more accessible format.

  3. I got an email from World of Darkness saying that Vampire: The Masquerade will be playable in Dungeons and Dragons via their upcoming book, Bound By Blood. It uses the 5.5 edition of D&D and will allow you to make Brujah, Gangrel, Nosferatu, Lasombra, Toreador, and Ventrue characters. Does anyone know this is happening and what’s your opinion on this?

    • A lot of people know it’s happening, in much the same way you learned about it. If you mean: does Onyx Path know about it, then I’d say that some of us do as we learned about it the same way you did. It’s going to be on D&D Beyond, so I dunno if there will be an actual book as well. Haven’t really thought about it, but since you ask, I’d say it seems like a shot at getting more D&Ders to check out VtM and possibly adopt playing the modern version. Part of VtM’s appeal was that it wasn’t D&D in setting or in system, but that was then and this is now. Good luck to them if it makes more “one game” players try something different!

  4. Some the rumours I’ve run into baffle me little like yeah I miss CofD dearly but you know, liscnecing deals and whatever Paradox is doing is out your guys hands. I do really appreciate Curseborne, esp as someone disappointed and frusstarted with some of v/h/w5’s design decisions.

I also figured Eddy doesn’t own you guys because OPP would have more Sherlock Holmes related games.
