Although our illustration above, by long, long-time WoD artist Ken Meyer, Jr., isn’t really all that funny or punny, and only sort of a mime, that’s kind of the point today. A lot of our game lines are pretty serious. They’re about catharsis and dealing with (un)life in an unfair world.
We have extended that range over the years and have created game lines that allow a wide range of play-styles and expectations. Really, we have touched on a range of genres, and those genres tend towards particular moods and sets of themes. We try and stay within certain parameters that are within that genre and our take on it within a game line.
I used to call it the Doctrine of Appropriateness when discussing what visuals, artist styles, and graphic design elements we’d use. Even the coolest visual wouldn’t do well for a line where it didn’t sustain the overall look for that line. That still works when looking at everything that goes into a game, I think.
You can see that overall thematic attention when looking at Pugmire‘s core book, for example, since that’s a good example of us creating a game from scratch. In Pugmire‘s case, Eddy and I worked hand-in-hand (paw-in-paw) to determine how to deliver a lighter and family-friendly playing experience. The writing, the delivery of that writing, the design and art chosen, all work together towards that experience. (Even if there are some deep and mature themes under the surface!) Similarly, each of the They Came From…! games has a particular aesthetic that plays off of the genre it is spoofing.
There’s a whole ‘nother blog post in there about how to write funny without making a TTRPG impossible to take seriously – and leave oxygen for the players to actually be the funny ones and funny-makers, so remind me about that and I’ll go into it another time!
Which I guess brings me back around to the “funny” MMN blog titles I make up each week. Every week, week after week, month after month, year after year! Next year I can say decade after decade…gulp. Mostly, I enjoy a bit of word-play, mostly foolish, and since this is my direct weekly place to talk right at ya’ll, you get a silly title each week.
Just like our range of game lines, though, these MMNs are pretty important to me, and the crew here, and even though the antici…………………..pation can be nerve-wracking when folks are waiting for a project to progress, we do take our transparency with the Progress Reports seriously. Basically, we have fun, can be funny, and at the same time we’re really committed to what we’re doing.
Here’s a line I think nails what I’m saying here, and I’m paraphrasing: We’re serious about what we do, but not necessarily about how we do it!
Some KS items: we’re hoping to get the Exalted: Essence Kickstarter page over to Paradox this week for their OK, and also we need to submit to KS for their OK.
We’ll let you know but unless everything happens perfectly (and quickly), we won’t be starting any KSs next week. But sooooon….
Looking at a KS reward ship-out that is finishing up, I wanted to share an excerpt from the latest V5 Cults of the Blood Gods Backer Update by our Crowdfunding Concierge, James Bell, concerning the difficulties that our outsourced fulfillment partners went through:
To say the past 16 months have been a struggle for many is an understatement. Even those who have been lucky enough to avoid the worst of the challenges over the past year have still had to deal with the cascade of delays and obstacles as everyone managed through the pandemic as best they could. The shifting of employment and workloads, the changing schedules and manufacturing ability, not to mention personal losses, and the reorganization of how Paradox manages theΒ Vampire: The MasqueradeΒ brand have certainly presented challenges to this project. But, at last, I’m happy to be able to confirm that the final 20 packages for this project were shipped out today.
What would have been a 10-day pick, pack, and ship process took double that, as our fulfillment partners at Studio 2 continued to deal with the ongoing obstacles from the past year, but at last we’re here.
Thanks to everyone for your patience and enthusiasm as these books trickled out of the shipping bay and work their way through the various delivery systems.Β
Normally, US backers would start seeing deliveries a week or two after the orders have left the warehouse, but the strain on delivery infrastructure during this pandemic has a cascading effect that’s just slowing all processes down. That’s also affecting tracking updates – but, I’m told, information should catch up as packages move through the system. Many of us have actually received our books before the tracking status got updated, but the good news is that, eventually, everything should be delivered and confirmed.
I wanted to get James’ words out here because they underline what I’ve been letting you regular readers in on since last year; the effects of everything that happened in 2020 continue to be felt. Here, specifically, and around the world.
Hopefully, we are actually coming out of these repercussions, and things can return to what passes for normal here at Onyx Path. But we don’t know all of what that means right now, do we?
Dynamic Dixie is hiring editors as fast as she can review their work, and Mirthful Mike is bringing on more graphic designers to get the books laid out once that edited text is done, but we still have a huge backlog of projects that collected during sequestering and Covid, and everything that made making our stuff so much harder to do.
I’m hoping that we will be “regularized” by the end of the year, because we sure do have some great projects waiting in the wings that you’re going to love – but first we need to get all the current games and books through the pipeline and into your hands!
Punny You Should Ask About the Monday Meeting!
We talked about the TryItCon this weekend, the 14th – 16th, and I just heard today as we pinned things down, that we will have a What’s Up With Onyx Path? panel at 2pm EDT on Saturday the 15th. Hope a bunch of you can stop in for the panel and even try a few games ala the name of the con. More info in the Media section below, including details of the charitable contributions that will be made with its proceeds.
The full schedule is here: https://tabletop.events/conventions/tryitcon-2021/schedule#?query=
Which of course led right into discussion on the progress of our very own Onyx Path Online Con in June – here are some links to the Code of Conduct and for a GM sign-up list. Please do consider signing up as we’re looking at some great games already planned that we’d love you to be a part of.
Code of Conduct: https://intercom.help/startplayinggames/en/articles/5208570-onyx-path-code-of-conduct
GM Sign-up: https://intercom.help/startplayinggames/en/articles/5217651-onyx-path-virtual-gaming-convention-2021-faq
We are planning on having some great in-depth panels for our game lines, and have a few reveals slated, or at least some serious teasers! (Both, really). We also hope to have our new online brochure ready to debut there during the con, but prepping for our upcoming KSs diverted a bit of time and effort from the Brochure – so we’ll see!
Which naturally led to more sales and marketing stuff, including that we are doing another three-prong sale: this time it’s the Scarred Lands Sale – with PDFs and PoDs on sale at DTRPG, and hardcover physical books on sale at both Studio2 and IPR. Scarred Lands is a hugely popular game setting for our Twitch-playing friends and we have a delightful amount of games and Actual Plays and info-sessions up on our YouTube channel. Check them out if you’d like to know more!
As James noted above, we’re still seeing all sorts of delays in shipping processes, so I let the team know that even though I had ordered PoD proofs for three different books weeks ago, I don’t have them yet. But, you know, they could show up at any point. π
We noted that while we feel like we put up a notice with the PDFs we put out asking for errata specifying that we don’t want pgXX corrections, folks still seem to want to include them. Not sure where this is coming from, but seriously, we don’t want them because if any of the other errata fixes change the text to such a degree that some of it flows from one page to another, then we have to redo all the XXs anyway.
And if we miss the fact that a page-shift has occurred…Hoo Boy is that ugly.
So seriously, we appreciate the attempt to help, but please check to see if we’ve specifically said that we don’t want that – most of the time, we do have a reason for those sorts of restrictions.
Folks mentioned both the big pile-up of projects but also the much reduced listings in the phases before Editing – why is that? It’s a combination of secret projects that we aren’t announcing yet, and holding off on green-lighting too much stuff while the logjam continues. We have a really big list of projects waiting in the wings, and we sure do want to show you those – but we also have a ton we need to finish!
Which is not the worse situation ever, but it is an out-of-balance one and we want to get it fixed! Then we can better take you to all of our:

BLURBS!
Kickstarter!
Like I mentioned above, weβre still pulling together the graphics in order to get the approvals for our next couple of crowd-funding campaigns. More when we have it!

Virtual TableTop!
Two Virtual Tabletop adventures: the Gauntlet of Spiragos and the Dagger of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop and DriveThruRPG!
Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.
Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Get started quickly with built-in support for most popular game systems. Whether youβre brand new to TTRPGs or a veteran tabletop gamer, Astralβs ease-of-use and built in automation is designed to streamline gameplay.

Todayβs Reason to Celebrate!
17 years ago the edge of Infinity book for Scarred Lands was released. Which is all well and good, it’s sort of a nod to Planescape but for SL, but the important part and why we celebrate, is that it is our own Impish Ian A. A. Watson’s first published TTRPG writing! Good going, eh!
“Some KS items: weβre hoping to get the Exalted: Essence Kickstarter page over to Paradox this week for their OK, and also we need to submit to KS for their OK.
Weβll let you know but unless everything happens perfectly (and quickly), we wonβt be starting any KSs next week. But sooooonβ¦.”
*impatient vibrating intensifies*
Careful – you might vibrate right out of this dimension!
This is a very real risk.
Are gonna get anything new for Geist and Promethean? They are my favorite lines but I feel they are kinda abandoned in their 2e iteration (much like GtSE was during 1e).
Abandoned? The most recent Geist product was not even a month ago!
Onyx Path has released a substantial amount of material (visible at the following links) for both Geist and Promethean.
Oh, I did not realize that Dark Eras eras were supposed to replace sourcebooks for the lines. Which is odd, since most lines still get/got their own supplements along with eras (vampire, forsaken, mage…)
1 foot in the grave is a jumpstart, come on. For folks who have pledged in the ks a jumpstart doesn’t add anything new to the line.
Also, by now all lines that are currently out have a 2e Night Horrors except for geist (and changeling which is newer and isn’t fair, since the hedge is yet to come).
“1 foot in the grave is a jumpstart, come on. For folks who have pledged in the ks a jumpstart doesnβt add anything new to the line.”
Not everyone who purchased Geist pledged to the Kickstarter. I’m sorry that you don’t count supplements you don’t personally find useful, but it’s still new material for the line.
As Ian points out, we are demonstratively putting out new material for the lines you mentioned, and we have framed the Dark Eras material from the get-go as a way to touch on the many, many gamelines that comprise CofD. Those are our efforts to try and give folks who love game lines across CofD at least something new but we can’t guarantee any single person’s interests in that material.
Don’t take me wrong, second edition already has more material directed to Geist than first edition ever did.
But I would like a player/storyteller guide to promethean. Specially because with the alterations of second edition, a bunch of first edition material is not apply to second edition.
I really need a Geist night horror. Sacrosancty krewes, geist and reapers from barghests, rank 3 or more castoffs, bounds with their own doppelgΓ€ngers, and that is just direct result of already published material. I am not even imagining the strange things that could come from OP writers for a NH to Geist.
Those are awesome ideas! If we can’t get to them, and/or get Paradox approval to do them, then maybe somebody can do a version on the Storyteller’s Vault?
I am willing to bet that the people sending in the “Pg XX” corrections are long time RPG fans in general, and White Wolf in particular. Back in the early days, White Wolf was known for the “pg XX” citations that slipped through editing, and I think I have seen a couple slip through, even with Onyx Path. Though, I have also seen them slip through with other game companies over the years.
The entry on the form for page XX submissions literally says “p. XX (these will be deleted as we do not implement them at this stage)”.
We make it as obvious as possible that those corrections will not be used, but they still get submitted.
Keeper,
I get what you are saying – I am also an old-timer – but eventually people need to pay attention to the words that are right in front of them. Then again, I did have to point out a sign to someone this weekend who thanked me and then promptly ignored it.
I’m sure that folks sending those notes in are doing so because they are trying to help. I mean, that’s a pretty convoluted master plan designed to bog us down! π My point, and as Ian also notes, is that we are specifically asking people in the doc not to do so. Which is why I brought it up. Also, as somebody who was part of the team at WW who discovered why pgXXs were occurring, it’s an irritating error, but hardly a fatal one – if anybody is concerned about helping us.
Exalted Essence and CofD T-shirts? Always good when an update tickles my fancy like that!
Great to hear, and thanks!
When will we see the Aberrant Core Book on Drivethrurpg available for purchasing?
Keep an eye on the Progress Report in this very blog and you’re sure to see the announcement! Thanks!
I’m very curious about what stretch goals they’ll come up with for the Essence Kickstarter
Agreed. I imagine there will be a companion that will add more charms and such for each splat. Other than that it will be neat if they go off in some new and different directions with this one. Maybe we’ll finally get an Exalted Cookbook.:)
What dishes would you put into said Exalted Cookbook?
Oxbody Tail Stew

dirtypoolfims,
Congratulations, you win the internet!
Rich,
Firedust seared kabobs for the South, spice wrapped tubers for the East (actually a dish in our last Exalted game), Gethamane fungi stir fry for the North, WaveCrest’s Bounty (seafood boil) for the West, and One Night in An Teng (a potent cocktail).
What’s in One Night in An Teng (he asks giving an opening for any who want to respond)?
One Night in An Teg and the world’s your oyster
The bars are manses, but the jade ain’t free.
Amazing!
If had the ability to throw money at getting a recipe in an Exalted cookbook it’d have to be calzones.
Going all the way back to August or September of 2001 there has been a calzone vendor in Nexus in pretty much every game I’ve played in or run. This eventually escalated into the mystery dish of “calzone ramen” which my players are still trying to figure out what exactly it’s like, so tormenting the writers with figuring out exactly what the hell calzone ramen is could be fun.
@SamuraiNujuru,
I like the way you think!
Rich,
I see “One Night In An Teng” as a class of cocktail inspired by that tropical city, rather than defined by the exact ingredients. Great House mixologists gain great renown for inventing a new but in-theme take on the drink. The version most popular in Great Forks is:
2.0 parts Amber Rum
1.0 part Coconut Rum (or liqueur)
1.0 part Pineapple Rum (or liqueur)
A dash of bitters (in game – coral snake venom)
Garnish with lavender leaves and don’t hand it over until they pay the ridiculous cost for such an extravagant drink!
(Note: this is just me brainstorming. A committee should be formed to taste test this and any other proposed drinks.)
So, uh, rum. Basically. π And coral snake venom, which is a perfectly normal thing.
So you’re ready to dispell the mystery and actually give the recipe? Ramen stuffed into the calzone? Calzone made out of ramen and stuffed? So many options!
(So am I)!
As nice as it is to see God started, and so many projects I’m interested in either on the precipice of launch or moving through production, I’m most excited at seeing Exigents finishing primary development almost a year on. I can only hope it’s excellent.
Bear in mind: that was one helluva awful year.
Oh I wasn’t critiquing, Rich. The realities of the situation are very clear. I was only noting that the most complex part of third edition is now largely designed, and I’m glad of it. nWod, exalted and scion are far and away my favorites and it’s quite exciting to see all the hard work of the writers and devs pay off.
No worries, I didn’t take it as a critique, so much as I was trying to underline the big blocker to having a lot of these projects out sooner. Thanks!
I’d be fascinated to read your take on how to make a TTRPG funny but not stifling. More than anything, the question makes me think of the evolution of Paranoia over the years, originally coming off as a straight-laced conspiracy game with possible traitor mechanics (until the players realised The Big Secret) and altering slightly from one edition to the next until appearing in the last few years more as an attempt at reproducing Dilbert’s company as run by the offspring of Clippy and Glados. There’s clearly a lot of ways to go at the same joke, and I’d be very interested in hearing your take on how to present a game’s punchline while still keeping it from stepping on the players’.
I think Paranoia is right there near or at the top of making funny work in TTRPGs. We actually talked a lot about it when we were working on They Came From Beneath the Sea!. It starts with a base concept that is absurdist, adds in the double-think in extremely concrete and in-world examples all through the books, and kind of establishes a rhythm, if you will, of how to express how The Computer responds and how the NPCs respond that makes it easy for players to both model themselves and anticipate how the world will react to what they do. So, as a player, you know how to be ridiculous by following all the clues, and you can engage in the world by essentially setting up the weirdness like a classic “straight man” sets up the punchline for the “funny one”.
So that’s a tad bit of thinking about funny TTRPGs…one in a series?
My poor withered bones still long for even the slightest news on Mummy. By now it feels like the last time it was mentioned, Irem’s pillars still stood. Any word on, if not progress, the next announcement/news regarding it?
Looks like we’ll be getting the final PDF soon. Indexing is one of the last stages. Then we have The Book of Lasting Death in editing. That’ll take a bit of time to finish up, I’m sure.
As for new stuff, they have to pitch to Paradox and get approval to start anything new. I’m sure Onyx Path wants to see how well Mummy’s core sells before spending effort on pitching new ideas.
It’s right there in Indexing, isn’t it? Did they time-shift it again? π
Are you aware that there is no separate character sheet for Lunars available? Solarβs and DBs have them downloadable, but you have to get a 3rd party sheet for Lunars.
Also I would love the DB and Lunar (and future splat) Charm cards available, in the same way that the Solar charms are.
Check again. π
Exigents and Essence? Oh man someone pinch me. It’s so close I can taste it,
WHy do you never mention The Immaculate Chaos podcast!? They are fantastic (it took them a few episodes to hit their stride but I love them).
If those folks are interested in us including them in coverage, they should reach out to Matthew as he says each week. We don’t have the available time to seek out and check with the zillion podcasters doing great shows out there, unfortunately. Thanks!
They already have!
