Never A Moments’s Rust! [Monday Meeting Notes]

The Dead Man’s Rust Kickstarter for Scarred Lands 5e has just over a week to go, and time and the kickstarter sure have passed quickly!

So much to do, so little time!

Right now, we’re in that classic pledging plateau phase most KSs go through, but that hasn’t stopped Travis Legge and his great crew of writers from creating Actual Plays and going on interviews in order to get the word out further about this awesome projects that combines a mega-adventure with a well thought-out plot and even more details of the Scarred Lands setting.

The full list this week is down there in our Media section, below, but I do want to call out a couple of efforts:

In terms of Scarred Lands itself, this series of YouTube vids are an absolutely fantastic primer and co-host Sarah Stewart has been working on the rebirth of Scarred Lands since Stewart Wieck was pulling together the SL Players Guide! Here’s the link to the full collection from Wanderer’s Haven Productions: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpK1DZP4y9yt3h4HAhLtGunwcvzkZtoUx

Also, here’s a link to The Wisdom Check‘s excellent in-depth interview with developer Travis Legge and his take on Rust and Scarred Lands as a whole: https://youtu.be/nBJ4AUgc6Wc

In terms of Actual Plays, we have Matthew Dawkins and Klara Herbol playing with Red Moon Roleplaying here:
https://youtu.be/qn1CZqDhyb8 and our own Onyx Pathcast Players will be playing Dead Man’s Rust in the Onyx Pathcast released this Friday!

Part of the reason I’m putting these links up here this week is that last week I asked our blog readers to let me know what was stopping them from pledging to the Rust KS, and some folks were straight up wondering just what it and Scarred Lands were all about.

I figure, links here and all down in the Media section might help make it easier to find out more about them.

Big thanks to all of you who did post! Your responses were really helpful and confirmed the range of our gut-level thoughts, so again, thanks for taking the time to let us know!

MONDAY MEETING… STUFF

Not a lot of the top secret stuff this week, so there’s more to read here this week. Which good be good or bad, depending on your point of view!

As an aside, if after nine years of writing this blog pretty much every single Monday, I opt for something a bit more light-hearted like all the REDACTEDs last week, how about everybody stays cool with a little fun? The stuff in question was never going to be put up in the blog at the stage it is at, so you were totally not missing out on vital info.

Yeesh.

Here’s a bit of info that’s not really secret, but did you know we have another meeting that informs this weekly Monday Lunch Meeting? It’s a quarterly production meeting where we discuss the way the info you see in our weekly updates fit together to further our bigger goals.

If you start with last Monday’s meeting, then last week’s production meeting, and then today’s meeting, our biggest ongoing conversation was about Exalted. We started reviewing just how our plans for it were hammered by everything that happened in 2020. It is no exaggeration to say that every project and every creator was affected, and then all of our outside partners like our printers and shippers were also delayed and understaffed by what went on.

That was the background, the what was. We needed that to get to just what we were doing about getting Exalted as a game line back on track. (And please do be aware that we all know that this is a conversation we have had several times before. We know, oh we know.) Last week, we heard those plans to accelerate the release schedule heading into 2021, this week we saw them implemented. The start is something you too can look at in the Project Status Updates, below.

It is the start. And here’s Dixie Cochran with a bit more info as she has been the person boosting and holding the team together all through all this:

Hi, Exalted fans!

I know it’s been a bit since anything came out for the line, and I’m sorry it’s been slow. 2020 hit our team a little harder than a lot of the others, to be perfectly honest. We’ve had illnesses, family emergencies, and some people working 12-hour workdays or picking up the work of three people in their day jobs. This is, of course, on top of everything (pandemic, protests, anxiety, etc.) this past year has brought in general.

That said, I think 2021 is going to be a banner year for Exalted Third Edition! In addition to the deluxe version of Lunars: Fangs at the Gate being on the way soon, art is rolling in for Heirs to the Shogunate, and it’s lovely. This week, we have movement on both Hundred Devils Night Parade and Exalted Essence, the latter of which I’m looking over before we send it on to Paradox.

I’ve been assured Across the Eight Directions will be in my hands shortly, even with the aforementioned 12-hour days one of the devs is dealing with. We’re aiming for about a month from now to have Many-Faced Strangers off to approvals, with Adversaries of the Righteous before that. The player’s guide, Crucible of Legend, should also be off to approvals by the end of this year.

Additionally, we’ve brought on two new developers over the past few months to help move things along. One of them is working on Exigents, which we’re hoping to see completed and approved by the end of Q1 or the beginning of Q2 2021. The other has been assisting on HDNP and AotR, as well as developing Many-Faced Strangers and Across the Eight Directions.

So yeah, 2020 was a bit of a bust all around (though I was and continue to be so happy with the reaction to the PoD and PDF of Lunars on DriveThruRPG).

Here’s to 2021 being a truly Exalted year!

As always, thank you to our developers, writers, artists, layout people, editors, and (most importantly) you, the fans! We know you’re hungry for more content and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.

So say we all!

Just a quick reminder that we are putting up what we hope are easy to download and use items each Weds in December since the shipping situation this holiday month is even slower and more fraught with peril than usual.

If you must have physical books, our sales cohorts at IPR are still running sales on our physical books from Kickstarters, DTRPG still has our PoDs for sale, and Studio2 still can get you, your local game store, and their distributor our traditionally printed books, too! Just leave plenty of time in your expectations for shipping!

Finally, we are again joining and sponsoring Gehenna Gaming’s Virtual Horror Con this year in mid-February, so expect lots of appearances by Onyx Path creators as well as all sorts of our games being run across the whole range of our:

Virtual TableTop!

Two Virtual Tabletop adventures: the Gauntlet of Spiragos and the Dagger of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop and DriveThruRPG!

Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.

Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Get started quickly with built-in support for most popular game systems. Whether you’re brand new to TTRPGs or a veteran tabletop gamer, Astral‘s ease-of-use and built in automation is designed to streamline gameplay.

Astral is browser-based and uses the latest technology to streamline your storytelling experience. Connect with your party online and run your campaigns however you like. Astral offers tools optimized for phone, tablet, and desktop devices, no installation required.

Build epic battlemaps using Astral‘s enormous collection of scenery, props, and tokens or upload your own. Pro users gain access to over 12,000+ assets and fresh new packs every month. Add weather, visual effects, triggers, and so much more with easy-to-use tools

Build your own adventure, or choose from pre-generated game kits like Gauntlet of Spiragos and Dagger of Spiragos. Create character sheets, craft maps, or just jump right in to connect with your friends and start your adventures!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

I just learned this and love it: Monkey Day is an unofficial international holiday celebrated on December 14. The holiday was created and popularized in 2000 by two artists when they were art students and caught on; first among their fellow students and then worldwide. In 2005, Peter Jackson’s King Kong was released on the fifth anniversary of Monkey Day. For Monkey Day 2014, the creators of Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb released a short feature starring Crystal the Monkey. Monkey Day celebrates monkeys and “all things simian”, including other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers, and lemurs. Monkey Day is celebrated worldwide and often also known as World Monkey Day and International Monkey Day.

  1. I really appreciate the level of transparency with your creative processes, Rich. It vastly exceeds that of most publishers.
Would you mind explaining the new publishing structure for WoD IPs now that Paradox has moved development in house again for core books? Its my understanding that Renegade studios is now the primary licensee for everything non core. So will OP be developing titles as a sub licensee similar to your prior relationship with Modiphius?

    Reply
    • No, I really can’t. Our transparency is about our processes, but our relationship with Paradox concerns both company’s processes and so not something I can go into.

      Reply
      • Ok I’m a bit confused by your answer. In the past, you were pretty clear about your relationship to Modiphius and Paradox. On multiple occasions, I recall reading here that Paradox owned the VtM IP, Modiphius was the primary licensee for VtM, and so any projects created by OP for VtM had to be approved by both Modiphius and Paradox. So I was just asking how that’s changed now that Modiphius is no longer involved and Renegade is. If that is something you’re no longer allowed to talk about, certainly, I respect that. But that’s different than saying that you can’t talk about it out of respect to Paradox when clearly it wasn’t an issue in the past.

        Reply
        • In the past, whenever I’ve discussed anything it was after the arrangements were made and all parties were talking about it. This is not that time, and we’ve already quoted Paradox as saying that nothing has changed in our relationship with them.

  2. I have been chomping at the bit for Deviant. I am so excited to see it getting closer to release! I have loved everything that you guys have done with all of the CoD titles. I have been a Vamp player since the first edition was released. I have played every game in WOD thru CoD. Just wanting to say thank you for making roleplaying a better place.

    Reply
    • We’re really looking forward to getting Deviant out into stores and available for sale on DTRPG, etc. It’s not just a great game on its own, but is so useful in creating all those sorts of “supernatural bits” that belong in CofD but don’t have full game lines or write-ups elsewhere. Thanks for your kind words!

  3. I appreciate there has been a little more description in the Art Direction section lately. At least it feels like the blurbs are more descriptive than they used to be.

    • Over the years the amount of details has ebbed and flowed as it’s always up to Mirthful Mike as to what info he sends me to include in this blog. It’s a pretty simple correlation of Mirthful Mike sharing more details if in sharing those details he doesn’t get folks giving him a hard time. In the art direction section, we’ve also started dividing ADing into Kickstarter ADing and after KS art buying, in addition to those projects that aren’t KS’d, so there’s more details to be given.

  4. How should I understand the part from Dixie that “The player’s guide, Crucible of Legend, should also be off to approvals by the end of this year.”?
According to the project status it is already in “Manuscript Approval” since .. how many month now (feels like ages)?

    Reply
    • Sorry for the confusion! It’s been in internal approvals, with Eric and Vance making sure everything matched up with their vision for line. There are still a few tweaks to go before we send it to Paradox. 🙂

      Reply
    • As Dixie notes, there are a variety of possible approvals depending on the project that may need to happen in that stage of a project’s progress.

    • That’s a little book we’re doing featuring the PC options from my long-time D&D setting The Crossroads Continent updated to 5e rules.

  5. First: thanks for your response from last week, and if I was one of those people who came off as too serious, then I’m sorry. I did get that it was meant in good fun, and I do appreciate your more humorous posts. =)
Secondly, more for Dixie, I had thought I heard there was an ST guide for Exalted 3E coming out, and somehow I got into my head that it was Crucible of Legends. Was it because there’s material for STs in Crucible, or is the ST Guide a different project entirely?

  6. Thanks for the exalted update. As an exalted can since 2003 Im used to the odd wait but clarification makes it bearable. Roll on 2021 feels like when crucible of legends, exigents and essence is out that the scope of the game will be greatly improved even without the other splat books. And looking what the team has done already for 3e lore very much looking forward to across the eight directions

    • Yes, you hit it right on the head! All three books – Exigents, Crucible, and Essence – are designed to give folks a lot of useful and fun info, including tools for covering more parts of the Exalted lore that haven’t been extrapolated on yet. Thanks!

Little disappointed to see there aren’t any Exalted 3e twitch streams would be great to see that.

    • To underline what Matthew has alluded to, the folks you see on our Twitch and YouTube and highlighted in the MMN have reached out to him as per his request each week in the Media section. We don’t have the bandwidth to seek out and review every group who puts something up online, nor are we a news site whose actual job is to hunt those items down. We’re just happy to share links when folks approach us.
