Onyx Path Publishing Announces New Exalted Essence Corebook

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 5, 2019 — Rich Thomas, founder and Creative Director of Onyx Path Publishing, announced today a new corebook called Exalted Essence is planned for the popular Exalted Third Edition gameline.

“This is a project we’ve been thinking about for quite a while and we’re thrilled it’s moving forward. I’m beyond excited to be overseeing the creative direction of this book, which is being developed by Monica Speca and Neall Raemonn Price,” said Dixie Cochran, the coordinating developer for Exalted. “We handpicked the Essence team, all of whom love and have worked on Exalted, very carefully and can’t wait to see what they do with the outline and alpha write-ups provided!”

Exalted Essence will be developed by Monica Speca and Neall Raemonn Price; Exalted Third Edition developers Eric Minton and Robert Vance will also be involved as consulting developers while they continue to develop other books in the line. The new corebook’s design is geared for new and existing fans who want a fresh and streamlined take on Exalted. Exalted Essence will include:

  • Ten Exalt player-character types presented in one corebook for the first time
  • Universal Charms (including Martial Arts) that work across multiple Exalt types, as well as some Charms that are unique to specific Exalt types
  • A brief overview of Creation so players and Storytellers can dive right into their epic adventures.
  • Rules for Sorcery
  • Storyteller Antagonists

“As a long time fan of Exalted, I’m thrilled to be working on a project that will help spread the joy of playing Exalted to all players — from newcomers to dedicated fans,” said Monica Speca, Exalted Third Edition developer and writer.

Writers for Exalted Essence have been contracted, and work will begin in 2020. Once the manuscript is completed, a Kickstarter is planned for the new corebook.

Fans will be thrilled to know Exalted Essence is not a new edition of Exalted. Like its name suggests, the new title distills what makes Exalted Third Edition great into a new corebook and is designed to work with other books in the line.

So when you say “streamlined”, whadda ya mean? Coz, while I have always ADORED the Exalted setting, I have utterly bounced off of every iteration of the system, every time I’ve tried to run it. And a less fiddly and involved game system would really ring my bell.

I’d say it’ll be similar to starter boxes, like D&D or Fantasy Flight games get. Essentially a simplified ruleset to allow for streamlined play.

That sounds very interesting! Will you be able to use this in place of the core rules (and if you want all that crazy crunch, just use the core rules)?

If it’s like the FFG boxes that would be great but those doesn’t have a lot of CREATION options they only comes with 4 pre generated PC, the adventure and the rules.
A good explanation of the rules in combat and outside of it. It would be good they check those from Lo5tR and Star Wars.

And from D&D 5E the limited options for character creation would be great. Maybe 3 variants per Exalted type, idk but Essence sounds good.

I am SUPER EXCITED about this. As a fan of Exalted since 1e, this is the most excited I have been in a LONG time.

Could be nice, but I wish for a storypath system exalted edition.

i’m kinda looking for Storypath everything at this point. Exalted, CofD games. it’s such a more modern system.

ok, so when you say 10 exalt PC types, do you mean Solars, Dragonblooded, Lunars and the like, or do you mean Dawn, Night, Wood, Air, etc?

As Exalted 3e gains new sourcebooks, will support for Exalted Essence continue to receive support, either through those books or through its own series of supplements?

Extraordinarily ready for this. I am a big fan of Exalted in general and third edition in particular, but many of my gaming friends are deeply averse to its level of crunch.

Will the combat mechanics and the movement range band been better explained and address it? The rules chapter in EX3 is awfully edited and some sections are to specific cough CRAFT SYSTEM cough or to convoluted.

I hope instead of a lot of charms we get kind of combos // Several charms together in a package to make character creation for NPC and PC easier. And the charms trees.

Overall I hope for compatibility between EX3 and Essence for future supplements.

Also will Exalted Essence will be a normal print run? One of my biggest complains with EX3 is that’s essentially just Deluxe editions and that’s too expensive to get the Core book in a Premium quality and some people in the Drivethru section comment that the binding isn’t correct for this behemoth of book.
