Rage! Rage, Against the Dying of the Light! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Yes, that’s right: only a few more days before our Deluxe W20 Apocalyptic Record Kickstarter campaign is over! Noooooooooo!

(And all due respect to the poem the title is a play on – it is powerful and beautiful. After all, how could I do otherwise to the legendary Dylan Thomas? The man all American Thomas’ of Welsh descent try and draw a genealogical line to connect with?)

We’ve achieved a couple of our Stretch Goals, and we didn’t load this one up with them, and now backers have a chance to help us create what are likely the last of the W20 books with this goal that we’re getting very close to:

At $85,000 in Funding – Howls of the Apocalypse – A chronicle incorporating plots from the pages of the Apocalyptic Record will be merged with the Ready-Made Characters, transforming it into the Howls of the Apocalypse scenario supplement PDF. All Kickstarter backers receiving the W20: Apocalyptic Record PDF will automatically have this added to their rewards list.

So this and Icons of Rage and W20 Apocalyptic Record itself will all stand together at the end-times of W20! Join your fellow backers and bring more pack-mates and make this a huge howl around the fire that is heard around the world!

Before we go much further, we thought it would be important to point out a new concern related to all the stories of shipping and printing woes across our industry that I have shared with you these last months: if you plan on ordering a physical book from DTRPG, or IPR during their current sale, or through a local store and Studio2, for delivery Nov/Dec, we strongly suggest you order now!

We’re hearing that the holiday season shipping will be extremely affected by everything going on, and shipping times will be increased accordingly. So USPS, Fedex, UPS, all those sorts of shippers, are liable to face increased quantities of shipping needs without the personnel and supplies they need.

So: SHOP EARLY, folks!

You’ll be glad you took advantage of the October sales now and are reading your books when your friends are still waiting for theirs to get through the holiday shipping bogs. If you’re a PDF reader, the shipping issues aren’t a problem for you, but you’ve still got a great DTRPG sale to participate in! Here are the links:

Here are a few more items we discussed at the meeting today:

Several years ago, we initiated a monthly release of two sorts of PDFs for Exalted 3rd Edition. One was for Adversaries of the Righteous – basically individuals and groups that would be actual antagonists for the player characters. The other was Hundred Devils Night Parade, which was a monster per entry. All sorts of creatures, some helpful and some harmful.

We had never done a long-term monthly release thing before, and so we let the releases go out at different sizes and prices in order to learn from the experience. Which led to how we did the dual Scarred Lands‘ monthly releases the year after, and now our Tasty Bits (which are for all the Storypath game lines).

Hundred Devils Night Parade had 29 releases, comprising 54 creatures. We ended figuring that we would add a bunch more and then compile and release them all onto DTRPG as we normally do. Wellll, we actually wound up being really literal with the title of the project, and so the now finished book contains 100 creatures!

Here’s Dixie, with some thoughts about that:

We are so excited about Hundred Devils Night Parade going on sale as a full book this week! Every single QC (literally 100 of them) has gorgeous, full-color art, and is ready to use in your Exalted Third Edition game. Prior to this publication, we released 54 of the entries as small monthly PDFs, so here’s a preview of a handful of the (46!) new monsters and creatures you’ll be seeing in the final product.

Beginning with Chapter One: Strange Beasts, we have the beautiful-yet-horrifying Crystalmoth, which can slice with razor wings, along with its progenitor, Gajum-Un, the Living Manse. We also present the curious and enigmatic Scroll, as well as returning (and terrifying) favorite, the Thousand-Forged Dragon.

For Chapter Two: The Dead, the soul-collecting Ankou leads the way, followed by a host of other creepy delights, such as the helpful Grave Messengers and the giant, one-man army that is Keregost. Death-related beasts in this chapter include Festerwings and Scavengers, and many more besides!

In Chapter Three: Spirits, we’ve collected both elementals and demons for your game, from Ahesh the Forgotten and Charnavrix the Unyielding to Oldrasek, Audegar, and Stanewald. Excitingly, there is also an entry for Sibri, the Rampart of Serpents, a Third-Circle demon.

Chapter Four: Creatures of the Wyld has weirdness to fuel a Wyld-touched game, as the storytelling Epochine rises from Creation’s birth, and Kian-Ji, the Heartmirror invites your Exalts to an otherworldly feast. Stumbling from the Wyld, Napaxu infect people and towns, while Siren Towers lure others to their doom.

Lastly, Chapter Five: Animals has creatures to use in your game as mounts, familiars, adversaries, and even Lunar spirit shapes! From Birds of Paradise, Camels, and Dolphins to the stranger Simhatas, Mospids, Siakas, and Sthenurines, we’ve presented a range of interesting animals for all sort of purposes.

As thanks for so many of you who bought the individual monthly PDFs along the way, we’ll be sending out coupons with a range of discounts depending on how many titles you purchased previously. Thanks for believing in EX3 and our efforts!

In order to get your discounts, be sure that your DTRPG account is set up to allow you to receive email from us: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/account_contact_options.php

We received a lovely thank you note from the effervescent Jack Berkenstock of the Bodhana Group for Onyx Path‘s efforts with their recent online SAFe convention. Which was appreciated but really unnecessary as we love to help out such a worthy cause!

Jack adds this for all of you good folks who participated:

The Bodhana Group has relied on the support of the community to help with our mission and vision.  We have enjoyed our collaboration with not only Onyx Path Publishing and their direct team, but all of the fans and friends of Onyx for over 11 years.  Your continued dedication to the mission of therapeutic gaming through sponsorship, donation, panels and many many games helps to spread the word and the good will – bringing our services to people in need.  This year’s SAFe was the biggest yet!

Right back atcha, Jack!

Which pretty much wraps up this Monday’s meeting. Hope to see you all next week: same bat-time, same bat-channel, and batty for our:

On Sale This Week!

This Wednesday the long-awaited and Greatly Expanded Advance PDF for Hundred Devils Night Parade for Exalted 3rd explodes onto Creation! And onto DTRPG!

Once a year, the time of Calibration steals the lights from the night sky and weakens the barriers between Creation and otherworldly realms. Monsters and creatures from every hidden corner emerge to claim it all for their own in the eerie, timeless dark. For five days and nights, the world remembers how it once was, when it was newly forged from chaos and humanity was not yet a scrap of thought in the eyes of its titanic makers. Wild and hungry, wondrous and deadly, a menagerie of beast and spirit descends upon Creation in its brief time of dominion to the joy and terror of all.

Blink, and you might miss it.

Hundred Devils Night Parade is a collection of Quick Characters designed for Storytellers to include in their games as antagonists, companions, familiars, and mounts, or to use as examples for creating their own creatures. It encompasses the dead, elementals, demons, things from the Wyld, ordinary animals, and stranger beasts that cannot be defined so easily.

Conventions!

Because dates for physical conventions are subject to change due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, we don’t yet have a list of upcoming physical conventions. Instead, keep an eye out here for more virtual conventions we’re going to be involved with!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Not really a reason the celebrate, particularly at the time, but certainly the big impetus for creating Onyx Path: tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of the mass firing of CCP employees that included many old White Wolf veterans. Most of those good folks have moved into much better situations, but the reason for that movement is still a cold sting. To the better times you have had since, my friends!

  1. 100 entries for Hundred Devil’s Night Parade?!?

That’s huge, can’t wait for Wednesday! (plus that cover art is far more literal a
than expected, but I love it)

    • Printing, like shipping, is also affected by COVID. And we generally wait to release the PDF when we discover if there’s anything we need to correct for the printing process. So it’s really hard to even estimate.

      Reply
    • When it goes live or shortly before, and then everybody can also fill out our Advance PDF errata form if they are so inclined, so we can tweak the files before the final PDF and the physical book PoD are made available to everyone. Thanks!

  2. My eagle eyes spot Lore of the Traditions is getting KS art!!! So you have Anima, [Classified]/Cyclops, and Lore of the Traditions in the works for KS. My wallet is going to need an ice bath after all that!

    Reply
  3. Is there going to be an Advance PDF and errata gathering for the M20 Rich Bastards Guide? The pre-order on DriveThruRPG says that will be the case, but I’m not getting that impression from these Monday Meeting Notes.

  4. Just received the discount coupon for the HDNP. I only bought six of the individual releases so I didn’t expect any discount. It’s absolutely appreciated though.

  5. I see a lot of novellas in the pipeline above–any chance some or all of these will be compiled and turned into audiobooks? I know you all don’t own the complete rights to *all* of the stuff you develop for or print, but the stuff you DO own… can we expect any of its fiction in our ears some day? In my (inexpert) mind, if you’re already writing, editing, and printing books, audiobooks would increase revenue regardless of the margins.

    Reply
    • So, yes there’s a chance. But bear in mind that there’s still a lot of work involved in making an audiobook beyond the work making the original game project.

      Reply
  6. Tome of the Pentacle has been in redlines for almost a full year now. Can you share any info on what’s going on with this book?

    Reply
    • It’s being worked on and is currently in the redlines stage, as you note. I’ve talked a lot about how the events of the past couple of years didn’t suddenly stop once we got to January 1, 2021, and some projects were affected more than others as our creators dealt with personal issues arising from the events of 2019-2020 including the pandemic. Hope that helps put that time in redlines in perspective, thanks!

  7. I buy all the Scion stuff and the Trinity stuff that comes out. I love these two lines. I am also getting the They Came From line as well.

I am worried, though. There is a LOT of products out there. I am worried that the writers and devs can get burned out. Can we get them to focus more on Tasty Bits stuff or something?

I do not ask for my wallet. I ask because I want to see longevity of the lines I love.

    Reply
    • By and large, it’s different teams from project to project. So the people working on Trinity Continuum: Aether aren’t the same team working on Trinity Continuum: Anima (or, even if they are on both books, their work on Anima ended long before writing started on Aether).

We trust our freelancers to know their own capabilities, so if we offer them too much work, they’re free to turn it down.

While individuals may overextend themselves from time to time — it happens, and we try to keep an eye out for it — there’s no threat of teamwide burnout.

      Thanks for your concern!
