We love it when the excitement gets “electric” like in that art…and at the Buried Treasures crowdfunder that is closing in on two weeks running! We’re headed towards 300% funded and backers now have all of the Delver’s Guide text, with the text for Secrets of Kalm and Kaos coming out next!

Matthew here again, to tell you good folks about one of my favourite parts in the ongoing crowdfunding campaign…

Pets and mounts! In several pieces of artwork and in many of the narrative example for The World Below, we depict characters on bug mounts. In the scenario I often run for people at conventions, it starts with the cannibalistic gouhak riding an enormous ptera in pursuit of the player character party, starting things on an exciting note. I love a good cavalry charge in gaming, and now – with Secrets of Kalm & Kaos – you can be in the saddle, riding down a haemexii swarm as your colossal mount overwhelms them!

We’ve provided rules in Secrets of Kalm & Kaos for characters to tame and train bugs and beasts, for starters. This ranges from determining the temperament and character of a giant bug with a couple of dice rolls (I seem to consistently end up with grumpy or comedic bug mounts) through to the ways in which you wish to train them. For example, you might want your bug pet to forage or act as a rescue animal, or to guide someone in the party with a visual impairment. Alternatively, they may occupy the traditional “animal companion” role of guardian, attacking anyone who comes close. Each skill is taught using hits from a very simple roll mechanic. With enough time (and patience) your character can teach an unruly giant worm to roll over and perform tricks!

Beyond this, we’ve also provided rules for mounted combat, as alluded to above. Whether you want to know the terrifying effects of having a mounted warrior riding down on you (the Terrified status effect does come up), the additional harm caused to your foes when you trample and skewer them, or the additional speed gained from having a beast with ten legs beneath you, there’s a lot covered.

Finally, we’ve provided a nice selection of possible mounts, and it’s easy for you to make your own. So whether you’re interested in riding a hard-backed beetle, a slimy worm, or a crawling ooze, Buried Treasures has you covered.

Coming this summer from Onyx Path Publishing –

The Storypath Ultra System will be open for third party publishing! This license will allow other publishers to create entirely new game settings using the Storypath Ultra game system. This will be separate from our community content license. Stay tuned to the Onyx Path blog updates and be sure to sign up for Onyx Path Virtual Game Convention in June!

We’ll definitely have more to say and reveal about this in the months to come before the Con at the beginning of June – where you are very likely to be hearing much, much more!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Today, we can celebrate National Read Across America Day – an NEA initiative to encourage reading. Read Across America Day began in 1998, on March 2 which was the birthday of the popular children’s author, Dr. Seuss. Since 2017, NEA’s Read Across America focuses on the importance, value, and fun of reading and sharing diverse books and “celebrating a nation of diverse readers”. Which also means we can celebrate today for the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904. He was an American children’s author, illustrator, animator, and cartoonist and known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death.
