So Much Curseborne! [Monday Meeting Notes]

Yep, a lot of our stuff here today is about Curseborne – but don’t let that get you scared about your other favorite Onyx Path games: we’re still plugging away at all sorts of projects besides the Curseborne ones! But, it’s almost October – the scariest month – and we’ve naturally timed a bunch of things to happen that are springing from our new horror game!

Plus, we’re really thrilled that we’re at a state with Curseborne that all these great projects that we’ve been pouring intense effort into are getting out to y’all! So with that, let’s roll into the new hotness:

As we approach October, we’re thrilled that we are able to replicate the timing and the venue of last year’s Curseborne Kickstarter campaign with the KS campaign for the Curseborne Player’s Guide! Starting October 1st, Wednesday, at 2pm Eastern US time, we’re going to be offering the next big book for Curseborne that adds to the Lineages with more Families, gives advice and actual rules for expanding just what it means to be in (and play) a particular Family, and then we swerve to present the rules for playing a character without a Family: an Orphan.

But even better, here’s dev Eddy Webb with this to say, here on the cusp of the KS:

Oh man, it’s so exciting that our first big supplement for Curseborne is going to see the light of day! The core rulebook is a huge accomplishment, of course, as well as the smaller supplements we’ve done, but I’ve always felt that the first big release of a line really helps cement a game line’s character and momentum. If you want a peek into what’s going to be in the book, here’s a quote from the introduction of the book:

The Curseborne Player’s Guide is primarily focused on the players at the table who take on the role of individual characters. If you’re a Storyguide, you can expect to find ideas that help you prompt the other players and frame their place in the world. Use these to create details that resonate with a player’s intentions and to direct the story to places where the main characters’ themes and concepts can flourish. Other players can expect to find tools to develop your character, both in your narration and on your character sheet.
In this book, we introduce grounding concepts for playing the Accursed, providing role-playing hooks and touchstones rooted in the world they find themselves. These are intended for both brand-new players looking for a place to start and for players in the middle of a story who are open to new angles and complications. We expand on all the types of Accursed introduced in the Curseborne corebook, including those who don’t have a family to call their own, but also provide even more ways to express and wield the power of curses through new spells. We even add a new angle to the world of Curseborne as we present playable rules for the monster-hunting Venators, who contend with the same supernatural forces as the Accursed without Damnations of their own.

Speaking about character creating, part of the Curseborne PG features a quick character creation step-by-step. To further explain and more importantly, demonstrate the process, Matthew has created this video of how to make a Curseborne character in 5 minutes:

We know that folks are concerned about shipping and tariffs and all that, and here’s a reminder that all of our crowdfunders have Retail Reward Tiers, and that you could encourage your friendly local gamestore to order your books for you in order to side-step those issues. It never hurts to let your local store know you’re interested in a project that’s up for crowdfunding! Plus, you can also let them know that they could order our existing projects from both Studio2 and IPR, especially if you’re looking for the snazzy traditionally printed version.

There was also some concern about us starting this KS before backers of Curseborne had received their Backer PDFs, but, of course, we actually did send those Backer PDFs out on Friday, so we hope that everybody feels better about that now, especially since we delivered the Curseborne Backer PDF earlier than we had predicted during the KS campaign!

Which gives me a nice segue into talking about the Curseborne Backer PDF!

Like I said, we’re just all so pleased and proud to be able to deliver our scary new baby to you all! We’re like evil, twisted, hell-storks, and hearing from all of you all about how much you’re enjoying it is just a delight! We have incredibly robust discussions all over, and especially on our discord, so please feel free to join in!

There are a few common notes that have popped up, so let me touch on a couple of them. First, yes, there are three black boxes where we are missing art that was running late. It will be in the final PDF and printed books, and it’s going to look great! But we couldn’t wait for it and hit that whole timing thing I mentioned above. Second, yes we were previewing sections of the revised text once a month, but we’re not going to continue that since the Backer PDF supersedes the excerpts.

Third, if you think you’ve found something that should go onto the errata form, please check the PDF or online and see if the thing you are wondering about isn’t explained or answered in a different part of the book you haven’t gotten to yet or missed. It happens, we all do it, but any time we can cut out even one piece of “oops errata” sent in by a backer it speeds up the process of getting the errata reviewed and changed in the final files.

Finally, while you’re having fun discussing the many areas of fun in the Curseborne Backer PDF, if you can throw in a mention of how much you’re liking it, that’ll goes a long way to make our creators feel good. (And will help them to realize that all the commentary is because they’ve done their bit for CB really, really, well and not that everybody is criticizing it). Thanks!

“WARNING: Travis is making shit up! Tread carefully!”

I don’t remember what the quote above was in reference to, but it was funny at the time…

We finished the Monster Kingdoms BackerKit campaign last week with respectable numbers and plenty more ideas for adding in projects, so overall we were thrilled that so many folks seemed to be into the setting! Thanks for backing!

In last week’s blog I asked if anyone had tried to bring up our website or forums as we had found some conflicts between our service providers and fixed them. Heard from a few folks on FB that the site’s faster, so we’re hoping that the fix was what we needed. Let us know one way or the other if you try.

Along the same lines, I’m freed up (almost) to check out the Discord Dice Roller App and to give it a shot with the fix for that. Going to try and do that this week…

Wow, I didn’t get a chance to mention the Lineage symbol shirts we’re putting up on RedBubble for Weds, or the Curseborne short story collection and the Making Of book that’re both getting close, but hey – we have all of scary October to add those in. We may even have another brochure in the offing.

Until then, I’ll see a bunch of you Wednesday on Kickstarter, and the rest on one of our:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Born this day in 1547: Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright, best known for his novel Don Quixote, a work considered as the first modern novel. The novel has been labelled by many well-known authors as the “best book of all time” and the “best and most central work in world literature”. Don Quixote is pretty much the patron saint for people who decide to work in TTRPGs (and those who are responsible for setting and arranging a regular game night) as we dream the impossible dream!

  1. Just want to reiterate what I’ve said in other social media posts. I really appreciate the work that went into Curseborne! I am super excited to see the making of book when it goes live as I know it’s been a long journey to get to today. Thank you all!

    • Thanks, it’s most appreciated – and thanks for posting on social media your appreciation for the splendid work our creative team has put into each aspect of Curseborne and the next projects for it!

  2. I did my first quick-read of the Curseborne corebook, it is a very exciting read and I love the changes to the first manuscript we got <3
The new adversary, Dr. Seth Winston is an interesting idea (I still love the Symbol of Murder more though ;-))

I'm in starting position to give you more money for the Players Guide tomorrow 😀
