Some Cursed Projects: Explained! [Monday Meeting notes]

I thought I’d use today’s blog to give everyone some thoughts on the roll-out of our Curseborne projects – you know, the ones all over the Production Progress reports every week. I’ve heard there’s a bit of confusion as to which projects are which, and I understand why that is.

Curseborne itself, the core rulebook, was designed to enable and encourage a style and level of play very much unlike our previous urban horror game lines. But if we had presented the sort of in-depth descriptions of our monstrous protagonists that we had devoted to previous horror lines, the core book with 31 distinct Families would have been well over 1000 pages!

Clearly, not viable just for book engineering reasons alone.

So instead, we limited the book to presenting the setting and the PCs at “street level”, early in their time as Accursed. Which means that there was a lot more information already set that could elaborate on the core starting situation. (As you can see with the expanded info covered in the Players’ Guide).

But since we have all this lore, and think it is pretty good stuff if we say so ourselves, we put together a release schedule that would expand not only the base info like I mentioned above, but also provide different ways to play and access the lore of Curseborne. There have been a lot of different ways that are now more or less accepted methods of interrelating with a game setting, and we don’t want folks having to wait too long until we provide them with their favorite access point.

For example, fiction in general has always been a way that the setting is still available, even when your local gaming crew can’t get together.

So, here’s a run-down of the various Curseborne projects with some notes from their respective lead devs. (And please understand that I might miss a specific book in order to give you a look at a different related one and that does not mean that “your” book has been cancelled, or that we hate it, or you, or any of the creators of the project!)

To start with, just a heads-up that we are still finalizing the printing of the core in order to get them into stores, as well as to provide backers with their book and their Deluxe Editions. It is happening, but the project consists of the trad printed version, the Deluxe, the four-paneled Screen, dice, and the Making of Book in a slipcase – so it’s taking a bit of time to pull everything together as we can’t do multiple press runs. We also have a pretty good idea that the Curseborne Jumpstart that finished its crowdfunder last week – thanks to all our backers! – can also be printed at the same time. At least according to our wonderful printer.

Here is Travis to talk a little about:

The Making of Curseborne

Dixie and I have been going through the emails, interviews, videos, and progress documents to tell the tale of Curseborne coming into being. It’s been a wonderful, interesting, and at times terrifying journey following the team from concept to execution. The Making of Curseborne discusses the various aspects of production and the means by which raw ideas were work-shopped and forged into a new and evolving setting. We’re in the final stages of assembling the book and are looking forward to not only getting copies into backer hands, but also discussing it at this year’s Onyx Path Virtual Gaming Convention! As we put the finishing touches on this tome, we invite you to once again Follow the Moth!

Since we’re talking about crowdfunded books, here’s Eddy to let you know a bit about a couple of the big projects he’s been overseeing – one you know about from last October’s KS, and the other that we haven’t revealed yet:

Oh man, I feel like I’ve worked on a million Curseborne books lately! Last year was a lot of work on the Curseborne Player’s Guide (which is ready for art and layout), as well as the stretch goals that came out of it: two novellas (one is in redlines, one is ready for layout) and a new jumpstart (which is in development). Now I’m one of the codevelopers on Curseborne Secret Project along with Matthew (which is now in final drafts). Plus of course I occasionally chat with Danielle and Matthew on various Curseborne-related topics. It’s always bubbling away in the background, which is loads of fun!

When discussing what books we needed besides big important ones that added elaboration to the core, we agreed that a location setting book provides readers and players with a snapshot of how Accursed society functions (at least in that one city), which is why we have pushed through the next book listed here, as commented on by Dixie:

Seattle: City of Curses

Matthew and I had a great time co-developing this city book! Inside, you’ll find a handful of new Families and broods, an in-depth look at Seattle though both historical and Accursed eyes, and a guide on how to build your own city, as well! There are also a ton of SGCs to use in your own stories, most of whom are in crews of their own for your players to bond or feud with. Seattle is a city near and near to my heart, and I truly feel it’s presented excellently in this one, but it’s also a great help for those who want to set their games in other cities, from Chicago to Berlin to Tokyo!

The next three books are those kinds that give folks options for how to get into and stay into Curseborne. First there’s one of our fiction books, then a solo play version for those players that want or need to play without a group (and we’ve all been there), and a compact edition, which consolidates Curseborne play information while lightly touching on the flavor elements we felt were needed in the core. All three are projects that Matthew has thoughts about:

Curseborne Solo

I believe it was Danielle who first proposed we make a Curseborne Solo edition, which I took on as developer with the fantastic Peter Rudin-Burgess as author. This book provides all the rules, prompts, and features you’d expect from a solo RPG, but firmly immersed in the urban horror-fantasy world of Curseborne. The sheer quantity of options arrayed in this one actually made me feel bad we hadn’t included them in other Curseborne books, but we can’t include everything everywhere! This one is going to be special, and I’m hoping we see some fun solo actual plays of Curseborne Solo in months to come.

Curseborne Compact Edition

I took on the writing of Curseborne Compact Edition myself, in response to players and Storyguides who have been fond of Curseborne but want everything presented in a condensed, reduced fashion. So this book will have much of the subjective, ambiguous material cut from it in favour of mechanical heft and all the rules you need to play the game. We’re also providing objective truths about the Lineages and Families, their Damnations and so on. The idea being, if you want to get Curseborne to the table quickly, this is the edition that’ll serve you well. Plus, I added a few new Heirlooms, tags, and other bits and pieces so even established Curseborne players will find something new within.

Peel Back the Bark Novella

It’s a rarity that I get to work on fiction, and this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to write 40,000 words or so of one complete story, which sees our Primal signature character – Izzy Plummer – moving to a small timber town in Washington with her family (lower case f) and finding herself immersed in cults, monsters, killings, and personal teenage angst. It’s great that we’re getting to expand the world of Curseborne via fiction and with such a vibrant character. Some people really find fiction to be the best way to open up their game settings (see the World of Darkness novels, Forgotten Realms novels, etc), so I’m really hopeful this one will land well, expanding what the Primal are, how the Accursed interact with mortals in a small town, and what things might terrify our monstrous protagonists.

Finally, as you’ve probably already noticed, Travis has been busily producing new Curseborne teaser videos that will give alert watchers clues as to the upcoming Secret Project that we’ll announce at the…well, let me dance out of the way so Travis can do his thing, other than to mention that’s a clue to this coming Friday’s vid:

Curseborne Videos

Once again, videos have been appearing on the Onyx Path YouTube channel, hinting at something more to come. It’s been a delight to see the theories crop up in various fan spaces. They’re all good guesses, fine detective work, but not quite there. Keep watching, keep guessing, and don’t miss the Curseborne [REDACTED] Panel at Onyx Path Con where all will be revealed!

So there you go! Please feel free to ask questions about these and any other projects next month at that there Virtual Con Travis mentioned! And once again, thanks to all of the backers of the CB Jumpstart – we were honestly stunned at the warm and excited response to the shortest campaign we’ve run!

While I mentioned the Onyx Path Virtual Gaming Con up above, as did Travis, he does actually have more to say about it:

We are now less than one month from Onyx Path Virtual Game Convention! The schedules are below, and as you can see we have so much to share with you! It’s going to be a great weekend, so make sure to mark your calendars!

Don’t forget, you can also sign up to run games for the convention, or find games to play via Startplaying.games! Head over to https://startplaying.games/event/onyx-path-virtual-game-convention-2026 and get your game listed! I’m running a game of Curseborne myself on Friday, and we have a few seats left at the table, so if you’ve been looking for a chance to play Curseborne, hit the link and sign up!

Sounds like fun! And now, if you don’t mind, I have to share with you folks some pictures of a tattoo that were sent to me by a fan of one of my Magic the Gathering pieces of art. (It’s Air Elemental for those who don’t play). The artist did an excellent job, which means I have the somewhat surreal feeling of seeing my work etched into someones else’s arm. Thanks for the pics, Ivan!

I guess it’s fair; after all, you folks have etched your enjoyment of our projects into our hearts! (Awwwww!) Just as we’ve etched our words and pictures together to create our:
