The Squeaky Wheel Gets the… [Monday Meeting Notes]

…Meece?

…the hose, again?

…the cheese?

…to back the Squeaks in the Deep Kickstarter?

But, of course! In fact there’s just over a week to jump in and join us all in the deep parts of the world as we scuttle and natter and chitter and chatter as mice and rats! Bring your favorite cat (Mau) and dog (Pugmire) characters and everyone can search for the underground ruins of Humankind.

As I mentioned in previous weeks, the sewers, tunnels, cellars, caverns, dungeons, and buried ruins, of the Realms of Pugmire work thematically for our rodent friends and enemies, and for Realms of Pugmire as a whole. They are quite naturally and logically the buried places; the places where Man’s secrets are most likely to be.

Each culture may have their own rationales for why they would explore and search for artifacts, but, as a concept, dungeons as exploration becomes even more compelling when they are part of a search for truth and identity for your people (as well as the adventure, magic items, and sweet, sweet, plastic! that we all expect out of a dungeon crawl).

To further this emphasis on the search, Eddy has embraced more of a free-form way of looking at these underground areas. There is no mega-map but plenty of smaller ones, so that you can decide how they connect for the story you and your table are telling. These sorts of areas are under Pugmire the city, these sorts of things extend into the Monarchies of Mau, etc.

Once the Stretch Goal for them is hit, these various underground areas will then also be available as maps for adventuring on virtual tabletop, which will make the decision to keep them modular even more helpful for playing!

So, check out the Kickstarter and check out the actual play episodes Vorpal Tales are running with Eddy and Dixie as players! See you in the dark! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/339646881/squeaks-in-the-deep-tabletop-roleplaying-game/

Today, while pushing our current KS, I also want to mention what comes after one of our Kickstarters. There’s a whole ‘nother phase after KSing, where backers can adjust pledges, get more stuff ordered, and folks who missed the KS can also get involved and get in on the KS’d project.

Back before post-KS options, we just had to tell folks they had missed out until the project hit stores – but now, with BackerKit, we all have more options and chances to get in on these projects!

In other words, BackerKits are cool.

In fact, the following Kickstarted products are still open for preorders via BackerKit:

Hope these links help folks find out about some projects they missed or want to now know more about!

They Came From Beyond the Grave! art by Durwin Talon

And Then We Chittered At Each Other For Hours:

Eddy sent around more examples of TTRPG companies announcing shipping/printing woes. And this time they also were talking about their need to increase prices to keep up with the rising pricing from printers and shippers.

I even hear that Hasbro is raising prices on D&D and Magic: the Gathering stuff!

So we continue to discuss how the current economic situation around the word affects us, our projects, and all of you. Basically, expect changes.

We don’t know how dramatic or severe, and so I don’t want this to sound all doomy and gloomy. So far we may have some complications to iron out with our printers and shippers, and with how Onyx Path is going to deal with things internationally as those laws become even more taxing (hah!), but we’re still – like many of you – adapting to changes all over.

Frex, I answered a fan last week in the blog comments who was concerned about why a book was taking so long, and what I noted then, and I want to point out today, is that the effects of this pandemic have no idea about our concepts of the end of a year, or the start of a new one. These Covid and “2020” repercussions are simply going to continue and aren’t stopping because we feel we’ve “turned a page”.

But you can turn a page that is now On Sale with the IPR Dog Days of Summer Sale that is now going on their website!

Yes, fellow babies, you just read one of the worst segues EVAH! Thank you, thank you.

So we did talk about the above stuff, and some of the items below here, too, but the majority of what we discussed today during the Monday Meeting was troubleshooting fonts. Yep, we’re having a problem with some typefaces working the way we want them to when going from Word to InDesign.

Fascinating, I know. But drilling down into such topics and solving the problem is part of why we have the Monday Meeting in the first place because it affects every project. It’s how a bill becomes a law. How the sausage is made.

It’s not all as exciting as figuring out panels for the online Save Against Fear Convention for our friends at the Bodhanna Group, which we also did today!

Keep an eye out for some additional blog posting starting this week that provide even further Media links to active online games, Twitch games, YouTube vids, etc. featuring our many game worlds! There is just SO MUCH happening out there with folks enjoying our games that we feel like you, our community, deserve to know about so you don’t miss anything!

Finally, I’ll be out next week on my yearly deluxe vacation to Italy on my yacht, The Silver Bell (not even remotely based on reality – it’s a family vacay in a tiny cabin in the woods with bad cell reception), and Dixie and Eddy will be blog-sitting for me. Please be super nice to them, and I’ll catch you later in one of our:

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

3 Years ago V5 was released, I think at Gen Con. We celebrate the new edition of VtM, and we really, really, celebrate the opportunity it gave us to create an explosion of fantastic supplements! V5 Chicago By Night, The Chicago Folios, Let The Streets Run Red, V5 Cults of the Blood Gods, Children of the Blood, Trails of Ash and Bone… these books are like a masters’ class in how to create rich and exciting books for a license!

Actually, with Gen Con around this time of the year, we have tons of anniversaries coming up – for the long and short of it, it was 1 year ago that the critically acclaimed They Came From Beneath the Sea! boiled up from the depths and 9 years ago we released Falling Scales Chapter 2! An SAS adventure easily adapted for use in the Chronicles of Darkness that was part of our earliest release slate.

  1. OH MY GODDD!!!!! Kith and Kin is in MANUSCRIPT APPROVAL!

    YEH-HEH-HEH-HESSS!!

So happy…. I honestly never thought this day would come.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  2. Hi. I’m glad to hear Squeaks is going well. Pugmire not my kind of game but it’s success is something I do enjoy, for Eddy and OPP, plus all the fans seem so happy.

I wanted to ask about something different and older, though. On DriveThruRPG, Werewolf the Forsaken’s Predators book is only available in hardcopy, with no pdf option. But that’s relatively new, for some reason the pdf option was removed a few years ago.

While not a 2e book, the mechanics of spirits haven’t changed much, and the lore is still incredibly useful, the book having something like over eighty spirit examples and writeups. But, especially with the hardcopy cost increase, this 1e book can be a tough meatball to get across to others. Is there any way the pdf can be made available again? There’s no other books on the horizon that seem to focus on spirits the same way, and outdated or not the information secondhand has helped us fans who have the book teach newcomers to the game on discord, but we can’t share much and atm directing them to DriveThruRPG gets them balking at the cost (one of our new players is from Vietnam and prices were already high).

It seems like it might’ve just been removed by mistake or something as is, but here’s hoping we can get it back and selling.

    • Unfortunately, as Predators predates Onyx Path by seven years, it’s not one of ours (note it’s listed under White Wolf as a publisher), so there’s little we can do about it.

      Reply
      • I did not, but it looks like someone got the word because Predators is now available in PDF once again (with the addition of it being available in softcover).

  3. I think part of people’s frustrations in waiting for a product is that they see their Kickstarter pledge as a “pre-order,” which, of course, in some ways it is. But what people fail to realize is that pre-orders in the context of a traditional publishing model usually occur when a project is MUCH closer to being shipped (usually a few months away). For example, Paradox opened pre-orders for Sabbat in May, with an expected ship date in August. Most of OP’s products are done via Kickstarter these days, which makes sense given the cost certainty that provides. But, despite the fact that the *writing* is complete prior to the Kickstarter, the project itself is nowhere close to being “pre-order” ready. So I think people can avoid frustration by divorcing themselves from this idea of their Kickstarter pledge being a pre-order, and instead think of it as a “contribution towards the creation of a product, which I will receive at some point in the future when it’s done.”

    Reply
    • Well, you’re not wrong in terms of how folks could perceive KS’d projects to hopefully avoid frustration. And I think a lot of our audience gets that. I made the point time and again that our KSs weren’t pre-orders, but when backers are coming from bigger KSs that are pre-orders, essentially, it is hard to make that stick. And in a bigger, consumer, sense – why should it? If I can order a book on Amazon and get it in two days – or overnight or same-day – then why should I pledge today for something that might be in my hands in a year, or two or more? We hope that by providing a bunch of other cool items via Stretch Goals and other rewards besides the main thing KS’d, and by having an active community, that we are giving people a reason to back beyond that singular exchange of money for product. But, YMMV.

Also, just a nit-pick to your excellent post, we only KS a dozen books a year, but have releases every Wednesday. Some are projects that came out of KS campaigns, yes, but we do publish a lot outside the backer reward ship-out model from crowd-funding like Kickstarter. Thanks!

      Reply
      • That’s fair, Rich. My perspective is likely skewed towards those products that I, myself, tend to purchase from you- the vast majority of which have been crowd-funded. Which isn’t at all a problem, in my view.

        Reply
  4. If there’s any way Mirthful Mike or Radical Rich could get some more shirts on the Red Bubble Store(like the art for Blood-Dimmed Tides hint hint I’d buy 2!), that would be great.

Regardless, looking forward to the Technocracy journals.

    Reply
    • Pretty sure we can only use images from projects we have created that use those images, so that sounds like a Paradox thing. Sorry, that’d look awesome-

  5. Rich, any chance you can update the Onyx Dice section to say “Android only” or similar. I recall in the mists of time this blog said it was being pulled from iOS for updates. It’s never come back.

Every week I scroll past and get a little sniffy because I can’t throw a hundred dice, after changing devices I can’t download the app, the money I spent on dice skins is wasted, and I part funded it as a KS stretch goal.

    Reply
      • Not wanting to be rude, but when was the last time you checked?

It barely worked on certain iOS devices for 2-3 years before it was pulled. If it’s not available on iOS and/or the developer isn’t up for making that happen then that’s cool. I’ve lost maybe £10-£15 on dice skins. But all of that remains frustrating.

        Reply
        • For years, as you said, Apple has made it harder and harder to adapt to their changing iOS – I’ve been told by the dev. But, as you have had it for years and years, how about if I reimburse you for all the skins you bought? Send me your PayPal address and the amount to richt@theonyxpath.com and I’ll get that out to you.

          Reply
          • I absolutely appreciate that offer. Thank you. But it’s not what I’m looking for. I genuinely only want the dice rolling app, and as I said I feel a degree of frustration that its not available to me.

All I’m asking is that you give the dev a bit of a prod if you’ve not done so recently, and be a little more transparent on this blog that it’s essentially not available to iOS users.
