As people far and wide keep showing up at all hours and backing the Deluxe M20 Victorian Age crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo! Earlier today we passed the 200% funded mark, and we still have a little more than half of the campaign to go!
The line itself is a play on “The sun never sets on the British empire”, which was said during Victoria’s reign because they had countries under their rule throughout the world. Empire-building and colonialism was in full-flower then, with everything that entails.
M20 Victorian Age deals with both the classic tropes of the Victorian Era, and also with the terrible costs in human misery underlying those tropes. It attempts to provide a background based on history broad enough for players to be challenged with the questions of their time, even with the power at their disposal. This Era could be the most dramatic and dynamic for playing Mage: The Ascension!
Yet to be clear, M20 Victorian Age is not a history book, although our writers have researched the era, and the history of Mage: The Ascension, in order to combine the two, nor will it address every issue that every person can point to. It’s not an encyclopedia of the time, nor is our intention to provide info on all countries in detail. It’s goal is to cover what is going on with Mage in the time period, which is a whole lotta material in and of itself, and give folks the info they need to have fun and enjoy.
Since backers will have access to the full manuscript, every backer will be able to enjoy what the team has created before the campaign is over. (And if you do see an area you’d like covered that’s not in there, please do use the form included with the manuscript downloads to politely suggest adding it).
As if M20 Victorian Age wasn’t enough, I’m thrilled to have another big announcement about M20 today!
If you look down at the First Drafts section of the production progress report, below, you’ll see that a previously unannounced project called M20 Lore of the Traditions has shown up! Much as Lore of the Clans did for V20, M20 Lore of the Traditions will devote a chapter to each Tradition, detailing new and deeper info and player options.
Like I’ve gone into all of 2021, we had a whole bunch of projects and other initiatives bog down because of last year – and if you combine our challenges with those of our license holders, it all snowballs. But now, we can shake the snow covered 2020 tree and projects are falling out! It feels good.
And How About the Monday Meeting, Then?
We spent much of the meeting going over our plans to set up the infrastructure for the next Onyx Path Virtual Gaming Convention in June. There’s a lot of pre-planning even for a virtual con, and we need to get that settled before we get any closer to June.
Did I mention that it’s in June?
We’re having sales at both DTRPG with their GM’s Day Sale running until the 15th. Almost all of our PDFs are at a sales price:
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/rpg_gmsday.php?manufacturers_id=4261
And IPR is selling our dice sets in their Rolling Into Spring Sale:
https://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Deals-and-Specials/
We found out during the meeting that we have 2000 members on the Onyx Path Discord. Which is fantastic news since we really haven’t been active with it for that long. We all hope everyone on there is enjoying the conversations in all of our game world categories, and for such things as the Pathcast. It’s moderated, and most of our devs and a lot of our writers are active posters, so come check it out!
Speaking of improvements in 2021, we’ve added further to our pay rates, and have begun to phase out Pay Upon Publication from our contracts. This is only possible because of our continuing good sales, even through 2020, and those are only possible because of your support!
We’re always looking towards evolving how we handle the business aspects of the company, from trying out alternative platforms for getting our projects into your hands, to improving how we work with our hundreds and hundreds of freelance creators. In big ways and small, Onyx Path has been evolving every year since we started in order to keep on creating what we all enjoy, our:
Many Worlds, One Path!

Virtual TableTop!
Two Virtual Tabletop adventures: the Gauntlet of Spiragos and the Dagger of Spiragos for Scarred Lands on Astral TableTop and DriveThruRPG!
Scars of the Divine War, which ended less than 200 years ago, have still not healed. One such scar is the Chasm of Flies, a rent in the earth created when the titan Spiragos the Ambusher was smote down by one of the young gods, Vangal the Ravager. Now, the Chasm is inhabited by spider-eye goblins and their spider allies, but it is also thought to be the resting place of powerful artifacts from that elder age.
Astral TableTop is the easiest way to play any tabletop RPG online, free. Astral already supports popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder, and Astral can support virtually any tabletop roleplaying game. Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
Not only is it National Women’s History Month, but today specifically is International Women’s Day! In our hobby, let’s celebrate women gamers, commenters, creators, and publishers – and all the amazing games and gaming they’ve made! Here at Onyx Path, we couldn’t do what we do without the women in our crew!
Wonderful women’s day to all women around here!
Now, Adventure! art is just amazing! It’s getting closer and closer!
Thanks, and glad you like the art teaser!
Will the Hollow Ones be included in Lore of the Traditions?
In M20, the Hollow Ones are listed as part of the Disparate Alliance, so if we include the DA in the book…
That seems like a well-teased stretch goal. Bravo!
Fingers crossed for Exalted Essence and/or Exigents around the corner! Or anything Exalted, really.
Just looked at cover art sketches for Essence today, actually. So, getting closer!
Ooh, that sounds like a blog post. I don’t think you have discussed the intricacies of designing cover art previously, and would very much like to read about them.
Did I not do one for the Trinity Continuum covers? By now folks are able to see how the main covers all play off one another, so maybe I didn’t talk about that yet…
Great to see new projects beginning to appear in the First Drafts section. Crossing my fingers for some Chronicles stuff to emerge, and keen to see where Aberrant will go after the stretch goals.
New Chronicles projects are up to Paradox’s OK. The TC: Aberrant project schedule is being hammered out as we speak.
The Clades and The Devoted companions are both in editing. Please if there is anything that can be done beyond the prayers and well wishes that are already going out, let me know. The awesome is mighty with this one. My first session zero in a LONG TIME was Sunday and I could feel the groove rising. Thank you
Congrats! Always great to be playing again!
Very excited to see Scion: Larp is still chugging along, and getting closer to release! Can’t wait to play it, keep up the good work : )
Do you already have a group that is ready to play Scion LARP? We would love to see pics from that when you do play!
We do! We’ll hopefully be starting in August, but we’ll see how it pans out. We’re currently tenuously doing character creation 🙂
When will the backers get the jumpstart of the Contagion Chronicle?
Sorry, Mirthful Mike was mistaken in his report, James tells us, and the Contagion Chronicle Jumpstart was not a Stretch Goal for backers.
For Hunter, the Vigil v2: what does AD’d mean?
The project’s art needs have been fully scoped out, and any art beyond that already bought for the Kickstarter has been assigned and perhaps contracted, although the notes don’t specify.
