This Weekend, We’re in Labor. [Monday Meeting Notes]

4Craftsman_final-small

Yes, strangely enough, while the rest of the good ol’ USA has a multi-day holiday, we at Onyx Path are working along. Even Mirthful Mike and Rollickin’ Rose on vacation still sent in their project updates for inclusion below so you folks would have the most up to date info possible.

But we have to, really. There are just so many projects that are clooooose to finish, or at least to getting finished.

Like Exalted 3rd Edition, which should be in to CCP for approval by the time you read this. (That’s art from the book above). Or Mage 20th‘s Standard PoD version which is still having trouble at the PoD printer, but which we expect to have worked out once the PoD printers get back from the Labor Day long weekend.

Meanwhile, Eddy and Rose were either at or in DragonCon in Atlanta over this weekend, along with our friends and Onyx Path contributors Bill Bridges, John Kennedy, and Matt McFarland, and seemed to have a had some fun and even talked some business.

Impish Ian Watson was up at FanExpo in his home country of Canada trying to both spread the word about Onyx Path and get his copy of V20 signed by as many of the voice actors who had worked on the old Vampire and Hunter video games as possible.

And as I mentioned last week, this same weekend I had the honor to attend (for the 5th year) the Save Against Fear convention which donates towards an organization of therapists who are incorporating tabletop RPGs into their therapy options.

While I have my own anecdotal evidence of how members of our community have been helped by playing RPGs, it was incredible to hear stories from actual educators and therapists about individuals who were reached and helped because of this “hobby” of ours.

They had one panel that I sat in on, that was more of a presentation and discussion group, all about the character sheet and how that info presented there parses out to the aspects of the PC which they then related to how those character aspects could be used in therapeutic sessions.

Fascinating stuff and the sort of things I point to when  I’m confronted with folks who just don’t want to believe that tabletop RPGing is far more than just silly games. I say what we do is Art, because Art changes peoples lives, alters peoples’ realities.

So there!

I believe the panels were recorded and that the folks there will be sending me links to those recordings and vids, and I’ll get them off to you when I get them. I also sat down for a quick interview with a couple of old friends- more on that when they get back to me on when they’ll be posting that.

So yeah, quite the “holiday”.

🙂

Hope everybody else who had the weekend off had a great time and enjoyed themselves!

  1. You guys are great.
That art looks amazing althoug I have no idea what’s going on other than “crafting.” Is that a snake’s tongue coming out of his mouth?

    • He seems to be sucking the magic out of the sword.

Or vomiting magic all over the sword.

Either way, a singularly new and interesting crafting technique
      :).

      • Oooooo

A pity though, there could be great merit in such projectile based delivery of enchantments. Just think! No more pesky need to lay on hands. Just BLAARG and your whole legion is ready to take on Thorns. The foundational work of Uke Mochi speaks for itself.

Admittedly Tsukuyomi did decapitate here almost immediately afterward so the technique would require a degree of … ergonomic refinement.

    • If I were the betting kind, I’ld say this is the illustration for the craft charm “Craftman needs no tools”. Congrats to the artist.

  2. WOW, quite a weekend RichT. So… EX3: The time has come, it was a long waiting… hell i feel the same as when i saw the preview of STAR CRAFT 2. One question: Can you give us some update about the Anathema Software development?, personally i depend a lot of it to make my chars.

    Thanks and cheers.

    • I personally haven’t heard anything beyond the fact that Anathema has been given what they need and that and they are working on it. Again, in case there’s any confusion, their character generator is their project and not ours, so we have no oversight on how things are going with it.

      • ill be honest, ive always preferred Ed Exalted over Anathema for character generation. simply more customization of the overall tool kits, including charms, mutations, merits/flaws, backgrounds or really anything else you could imagine putting on a character sheet, ease of use, and generally more splats offered overall (link below in case someone hasn’t heard of it) the main thing though is that its made by 1 guy so updates can be slow and… it doesn’t much like the newer OS’s. you can get it to work but its often a bit more finicky and in my experience sometimes requires multiple attempts. still definitely always preferred it. the only thing that I can definitely say about the current release of Anathema is that I like how simple and well designed their sheets are.

Ed Exalted just updated to v7 on august 30th 2015 to now include Alchemicals. currently he has said that he doesnt plan to do 3e, but may work on it later.

  3. Glad to hear each of you had some good trips at the various conventions.

You guys have some great stuff that is about to be released. And I have some great(okay?) money that I can’t wait to give all of the fine creative people at Onyx Path once they are.

Keep up the great work, Rich.

Oh, and by the way, are we still looking at the last week of September for W20: Shattered Dreams?

  4. Speaking of video games. While I love your books, of course, I also think your worlds are just perfect to explore in other media and… honestly still cannot understand, even knowing all that has happened in the past, how it can be that there aren’t more shows, movies and video games set in those settings. I mean just look at bloodlines as an example of the pure awesomess that can be achieved if done right.

So, now that you guys are all sails open in a sea of endless potential, I ask the 10 000$ question. Without revealing anything that would not be proper, and with full understanding that the answer will have to remain theoretical: How likely is it, that we might get a new show, movie or game within, let’s say, 3-5 years?

How open would/could you be if approached by third parties interested in producing either ones?

Because I for one would kill for a Werewolf TV show, movie trilogy and/or open world game or a Vampire: The Mascarade episodic game.

    • I think our best hope is that Steam’s market of visual novels will grow big enough that CCP will notice and see an opportunity to make some easy cash for little investment, especially if it’s Kickstarted.

Anyone who approaches us about WoD projects will get directed to CCP, because they own the IP. Any decision on this sort of thing is theirs to make. We have the license to make tabletop games only.

For all I know there may be other projects currently in development, but they don’t have to communicate that to us at all.

      Reply
      • That… makes sense. Is a bit sad, but it makes sense. I hope they do make something with those licenses. It would be such a waste not to. And any event, thanks for the reply Ian.

        • Computer game made by hem i would guess no with the wod mmo failing and them being mainly mmo guys (ccp each). Maybe if someone approached them with an idea that he had a chance to do it himself.
Films and series. A series would be possible as there was one already. And only stopped with the dwath of the main actor. But i wiuld guess that there wont be enough profit in a series to split between 2-3 companies. Esp. With so many similar ones around. Which leaves films. And there are many films set in a dark vampire filled universe. So possible lawsuits,… If one gets too successfull as they can only get similar. So a high risk there.
All in all. I would guess low propability there 🙁

          • Yes, but that’s assuming Vampire is the focus. Which I am personally not rooting for. Vampire as a game, yes, gimme, gimme, but as a movie/show, we’re saturated right now. I agree.

But a Werewolf: The Apocalypse or Mage: The Ascension show or movie would be a vastly different breed of movie/show than anything on right now if they keep the setting and mood intact.

  5. So long as Ex3 comes out between the 10th and the 28th, it’s all good. It’ll give me an excuse to work at home while people get used to all the traffic and construction going on around here.

Aside from that, I’ve been in the mood for some more Beast during the last few days. I’m really looking forward to learning more about the player’s guide.

    • Awesome! It was really important to me that each dog’s character come through in the poster art, besides them showing a range of attitudes, classes, and environments. Thanks and thanks to Jon Hodgson for illustrating Pan so well.

  7. So I’m from Washington state and am a part of the Ex3 Kickstarter, you know the one that is 2 years overdue. Double the 650,000 they raised would be a pretty penny.
