To the Final Duel! [Monday Meeting Notes]

That’s right! These are the last few days of the Jadestorm crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit! So far we’re over 340% funded and have passed through our latest Stretch Goal just today! If you’re a backer, you pretty much have the complete text, and James has already given everybody a head’s-up about Add-ons and other “end of the campaign” procedures.

But over here, we’ve got juuuust a bit more to share, including:

Here’s Emma’s final thoughts during the campaign, and they are a look at some of the interesting ways our other Earthbane Cycle game lines might intersect with Jadeborn:

Return to the Cycle

Jadestorm is an Earthbane Cycle game, and as fans of its other entries know by now, no Earthbane book is complete without some curious references to its sister games. The world of Eos contains a great many of these as well, from the obvious inclusion of bloodlines from other Earthbane games to more obscure hints at things like the origin — or perhaps the future? — of The World Below’s settlement of Oracaster. Storyguides will even find where Eos is hiding Earthbane’s now ubiquitous Well, which plays a disturbing and thought-provoking role in one of Jadestorm’s pre-written adventures.

When designing Jadestorm’s playable options, it was important to me that players have the ability to engage with these broader themes and repeated images in the Earthbane Cycle even if the Storyguide wants to run a campaign that won’t take the concord anywhere that’s recognizable from, say, At the Gates. You’ll find some interesting implications for the broader Earthbane Cycle in several of the playable options, but none greater than in the Nether Path devoted to Wid-ros, the Malefic who ruled oblivion and vanished from Eos after winning the Infernal War:

Jade of the Hollow King

Wid-ros’ Jadebearers view themselves as neither heroes nor villains. They are inevitable reapers, the hands of the universe and its cycle. Eos and the cosmic realms must have come from something before them, which must have themselves come from something even earlier. So on and so forth, until some lost world must have sprung from nothing at all.

This is the crux of Wid-rosi philosophy. Oblivion is no more than another stop on the universe’s cyclical journey, just like Eos and other existences even the Malefic could never know. Wid-ros’ choice to vanish instead of claiming victory is the only proof Hollows need that they are part of a grand design.

Paradise Lost

Heaven is important to the wuxia and xianxia genres — not the Heaven of Abrahamic religions, but “heaven” as a conceptual force of natural order and law — so it was crucial that Jadestorm include it. But in a setting with three Malefic pantheons, seven bloodlines, and nine realms, how could Eos possibly have one unified conception of heaven?

When writing Jadestorm’s bloodlines, it made the most sense to me that different people groups would have different ideas of what heaven is. The lepora conceive of heaven as the moon, a beautiful realm still untouched by the Malefic that they might return to when they die; the mantodea believe heaven was a cloud realm that the Malefic destroyed eons ago, giving rise to mantodea culture’s hatred of the Jadebearers who still bear infernal power in much the same way that much xianxia media positions cultivation as a defiance of heaven’s natural order; and Glamourwefts, Sword Saints, and other Disciplines with lofty ideas about virtue all affect how Jadebearers who study those arts might conceive of heaven.

People across Eos quarrel about whose idea of heaven — also called Nirvana by some groups — is the right one, but many myths about heaven seem to have some basis in reality. Maybe they’re all right in their own ways. Maybe none of them are right at all, and heaven never really existed. But if that’s the case, how could a place like this exist in Eos?

Nirvana’s End

Mantodea legend tells of Nirvana, a lost realm of paradise that the Malefic ripped from the sky eons ago. Eos’ other bloodlines have their own myths of such a place, but none are so accessible as the rolling cloud plains in the Wilds south of Kir Sento that one can still reach when weather brings them low enough to touch mountaintops. The luminous clouds are thick enough to walk on and dotted with ruins that the mantodea cite as proof their legends are true.

Nest: A shockingly large nest made from the stone found across the clouds’ ruins, crystal from below, and plant matter from as far off as Silvaerim and Kir Ob-Tani. Whatever carried stone, crystal, and fallen trees from other realms to build this nest must be horrifyingly strong indeed; an egg as large as you are sits at the nest’s center, though it looks to be made of solid rock.

But Emma’s actually been really busy, and sat down for a fun interview about Jadestorm and other topics with our old friend Corbin!

Plus, in response to a bunch of folks asking whether there’d be an Actual Play for Jadestorm so they can see what it looks like in, um, actual play, Emma put together this awesome AP of the game:

Not to be outdone, here’s Matthew’s Jadestorm AMA from his site!

So, plenty of vids to go on top of our written excerpts and the complete text for backers! You can tell that the team are super-excited, and hope that you are (or will be) too!

Bauhaus is the best I can do for you

That almost sounds like song lyrics, doesn’t it? But not yet, instead it is one of many lines thrown out in chat during our Monday Meeting today. Referencing referencing stuff from the 90’s, of course!

Not from the 90’s are all these Curseborne moths fluttering around! At least I hope none of them are from then, no natural moths could live so long…

We’ve got a bunch of Curseborne Covenant stuff percolating, so here’s what has bubbled to the top of our evil brew!

Here’s the link to the Covenant Kickstarter sign up and preview:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/curseborne-covenant

Feel kind of bad for that moth up there splatted by the code box!

During the end of last week and into the weekend, it seems like there was a leak of some or all of the Conspiracies chapter for Covenant! Since they are one of the cool new elements that are a big part of advancing into the shadowy secret world outside of your Family, we decided today that since some folks got to see them early, EVERYBODY should get to see them early!

Here’s an official link to the Conspiracies text:

Now everybody can join the discussions already taking place all over our social media! (You’ll notice that this link also shows you a bit of our changing Curseborne website – more to come, there!)

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Let’s celebrate the historical reaction to 9/11 that can be seen here, today, in 2001; the Historic National Prayer Service held at Washington National Cathedral for victims of the September 11 attacks. A similar service is held in Canada on Parliament Hill, the largest vigil ever held in the nation’s capital.

  1. We didn’t start the pyre,
    No it’s always burning
    since the world’s been turning.

    No we didn’t light it,
    but tonight we fight it.
