Unleash the Unleashing! [Monday Meeting Notes]

We’re unleashing the greatness of the Realms of Pugmire with the Pugmire Unleashed crowdfunding campaign this week!

It goes live at 2pm EDT on BackerKit – this Thursday the 19th!

Even before that exciting time and date you can use this handy sign-up link in order to get a taste for what’s to come, and become one of our supporters:

In fact, here’s Eddy with another sneak peak of some of the info on Badgers that you’ll find in the book!

We’re getting close to launching Pugmire Unleashed: A Player’s Guide very soon! To keep you enticed, here are a look at the badger upbringings — the first time we’ve ever shown anything about player character badgers!

Broch

Clan leaders tend to be brochs, and they’re often called upon to make tough decisions others can’t. Brochs are raised to be thoughtful and meticulous, laying out plans for everything from battle to herd movements so they can easily find food. They are brought up to consider appropriate courses of action and decide on what’s best for their community, as survival depends on preparedness.

Because of this, brochs are thought of as calm, stoic, and occasionally even slow, but such descriptions undercut how agile they are internally. Though outwardly placid, brochs are usually considering one problem or another and how best to fix it, their minds racing from initial issue to a variety of outcomes for any situation. They just find it easier to keep their thoughts to themselves until it’s prudent to speak.

While some brochs lead their clans into battle (bashers), others act as spiritual counselors (wildspeakers). Brochs can be found doing all manner of jobs, as everyone in badger society is meant to pitch in a meaningful amount.

Ferret

Any badger raised to be lithe, quick, and dexterous is called a ferret. They’re often used as messengers and scouts, and they’re also generally adept at sneaking in and out of places they shouldn’t be. Ferrets act as advance intelligence gatherers, scoping out any places a clan intends to use as a resting spot, and checking for enemy movements to avoid ambushes. Some ferrets also use their skills to find hunting or gathering spots to help feed their clans.

Ferrets’ reliance on being quick, both in their speech and movement, leads to others sometimes thinking they’re flighty or irresponsible, but that’s usually untrue. While ferrets dislike standing still and droning on about things, it’s because they always feel like they’re busy — and they usually are. Often, people throughout the clan ask ferrets for favors without realizing other people have also asked them to fetch something and also the leader needs them to scout ahead… and so it goes. Thus, ferrets are incredibly good at multitasking and figuring out where priorities lie. Would it hurt worse to get in trouble with the clan leader or their own mother? Best to be double quick and not ever have to find out.

Ferrets are well-suited to anything that requires being light on their feet, whether that’s chasing after and ensnaring enemies (trappers), or keeping up with their speedy animal companions (wildspeakers).

Otter

Now that the badger clans have started opening diplomatic relations with the other species, the charismatic otters are widening the scope of their duties. Otters have been the peacekeepers and arbiters among the clans since they joined many years ago, but sending envoys to Pugmire, the monarchies, and beyond is precariously new. They know one misstep could set them back, so they read the histories, train their rhetoric, and carefully pore over any missives they can get their paws on to learn the nuance and connotations of their new language.

Otters smooth over both intra- and inter-clan conflict, while advising others in leadership positions how best to judge and perhaps even punish transgression. Usually, a clan’s chronicler is an otter, and when badgers need to write missives to each other or to members of another species, otters typically act as their scribes. Most otters cultivate both a cool head and a keen eye for detail; they are excellent at reading body language and intentions, as well as convincing other people to follow their course of action. Otters are also excellent teachers who can adjust their instruction to any individual student on the fly. Most young badgers have a favorite otter who taught them how to fish, hunt, weave, read, or sing.

Placid, calm otters excel at waiting for their prey to come along, whether literal or in social settings (sniper). They also exhibit infinite calm working with animals and cultivating plants (wildspeakers), as well as when weaving nets and setting snares (trappers).

Polecat

Polecats are the newest members of the badger clans as a whole, though they joined around the same time as the otters. Not a few of them resent the fact that many — if not most — badgers still treat them like outsiders and newcomers, despite their universal embrace of the otters. It’s no surprise that polecats end up with the brunt of grunt work and jobs no one else wants to do, both in camp and during hunting parties. This has, however, made them resilient. They also rest easy knowing that if they stopped doing their jobs for even a day, no one else would want to pick up the slack. The badgers have come to rely on the polecats’ unwavering commitment to duty and clan, but times are changing rapidly.

Of all the badger upbringings, polecats are least likely to include adoptees from other badgers in their ranks. Few badger or otter kits want to be polecats when they grow up, and even fewer otter or wolverine parents encourage their kits to join. Polecats, however, happily take in those who don’t quite conform to what the badger clans expect of them, such as short-statured wolverines or quiet and timid ferrets. They’re also the most likely to adopt from outside their own species, allowing outcast lizards or rodents into their ranks, among others. Polecats focus on teaching their offspring to be well rounded, anticipate the needs of others, help out when they can, and not to judge people based on their station in life. It’s not about being the mightiest warrior or a great orator or hunter; it’s about community.

Polecats can be found in all sorts of jobs in the clans, whether helping out hunting parties via making and deploying nets (trappers) or rushing a dangerous animal from the frontlines, since no one else wants to put themselves at the most risk (bashers).

Wolverine

The badger clans’ bruisers and enforcers, wolverines are usually the largest physically as well as the most vicious. They value toughness above all and are the first to lead the pack in larger-scale conflicts and most hunts. They spend their days training and drilling when they’re not hauling crates or helping build wagons and other structures needed for their caravans. Wolverines also gather wood for campfires, regarding swinging axes at trees as a good use of their muscles. Protecting their individual clans, as well as badgers as a whole, is their foremost goal, and there’s usually a wolverine among any guard rotation.

While anyone with an aptitude for physicality can become a wolverine, they’re one of the more insular upbringings, adopting mostly from badgers and other larger types. Some others question their role in the clans, especially as they turn toward less-martial ways of settling conflicts, but it can’t be argued that they’ll always need someone on the frontlines or leading great hunts, and wolverines have long proved best at those. Even their traditional dances and tales draw from the warring side of their history and propping up great badgers like Kibu the Red, who’s known not only for his gift of language but also his bravery in combat.

Wolverines lead the majority of their clans’ hunting parties (bashers) and are also trained with ranged weapons (snipers), though it’s rarely their first choice. When wolverines bond with nature (wildspeakers), they favor predator beasts as their primary companions.

Now that’s a meaty preview, thanks Eddy!

For even more info, on Thursday at 1pm EDT we’re rebroadcasting the Pugmire panel with Eddy from last week’s Onyx Path Virtual Con on our Twitch channel – you can check that out for more info!

Just a couple more Pugmire Unleashed points – the first of which is that, yes, we changed the title as we were working on the crowdfunder. I guess it’s a sign of us always wanting to do better! In this case, we first were using the Pugmire Players Guide, but we wanted a title title so that the Players Guide could be secondary. By the time Eddy pitched the game to me, we had the original title that I’m blanking on right now, a title neither of us really were keen on, but it worked OK. Then, Eddy came up with Pugmire and Beyond, which is literally what the book covers, so that was OK in a “tell the buyer what’s in it” way.

As we were putting together the crowdfunding page, our Crowdfunder Concierge James jotted down a list of names for the Reward Tiers and I noticed one of them was Pugmire Unleashed. I just stared at it for a minute, stunned by what a good title for the whole book it was (and pissed that I had never thought of such an appropriate doggy pun!) A quick email to Eddy, who agreed, and we let our team know that we were making juuuust a slight alteration to the game. So, I guess it’s really both a sign that we want to try and do the best we can for one of our game books, and also that we are small enough that such a last-minute improvement is actually doable!

Similar, but not quite, you’ll also see during the campaign that we’ve structured the campaign to avoid repercussions from the ongoing flux and chaos with printing and shipping outside the US. We hope backers will appreciate this particular solution.

Finally, coming up on our Twitch, Comrade Bubbles (as seen on our Discord and elsewhere) is going to run an Pugmire Unleashed Actual Play campaign – starting out with Session 0 on the 26th June 2025 at 2:30pm Eastern!

And then these *&$% werewolves had to be “£($£ fixed!

So, yeah, as work continues on the Making of Curseborne project, we’re all going to wind up being interviewed and Mirthful Mike suggested gently this average sample of what his interview might be like. We do all love this thing of ours!

Actually, here is something we really do love that we get to do: Matthew’s schoolkids project that we mentioned weeks ago on this blog has been covered by a local UK paper.

The headline from the Salisbury Journal reads: “Salisbury school partners with Onyx Path to create RPG book”

Below is a few quotes from the article and then a link if you want to read the whole thing:

“They did it in their own time, taking time out of their breaks and lunches. It was no small task, and it was a real triumph.”

“Matthew kindly came in and spoke to the children about what happened, and the children were all presented with a copy of the book in assembly.

“They didn’t know, and they were absolutely thrilled. The Year 5 children have already said they want to do it next year!”

Link to the article.

We really hope that all those budding game designers had so much fun with the project that it leads to all sorts of creative moments in the years to come!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

1904 – Irish author James Joyce begins a relationship with Nora Barnacle and subsequently uses the date to set the actions for his novel Ulysses; this date is now traditionally called “Bloomsday”. Yes, it’s a recreation of stream of consciousness, might require an explainer text to be open right next to it, and has nearly no vampires, swordplay, explosions, or spellcasting in it, but Joyce’s day-long chronicling of the physical and mental meanderings of a “regular person” is an amazing artistic triumph because with all that it still illuminates the human condition in ways a more “novelistic” novel could not.

  1. Hi. Maybe I missed something but I don’t get what’s with Exigents. It has status “quoting” for… I guess a year now. I know about suply chain problems but this is a bit problematic, especially when later book (Essence) landed on my bookshelf already and next books are added to queue (Sidedeals and I guess Abyssals)

    • Yes, please do look up the existential crisis to our industry that are the tariffs. It’s an ugly situation that we are trying to navigate, and part of that is getting quotes with printers.

      • Ok, I understand. That’s why I’m asking, not making a media drama :). Hope it’ll solve soon (yes, I know about the other drama, caused by… highly erratic regulations about international trade in U.S.A. due to some stable geniuses playing 6D chess),

    • Right now, it’s an Accursed. I think. But sometimes things change overnight and no one remembers changing them….

    • Depends on who is defining “polecat”. In the US South, we do call skunks “polecats” sometimes, but they also use the term for black-footed ferrets where those are common, and European polecats are very much like chonky ferrets in both appearance and behavior. It’s a name that gets hung on a lot of underappreciated, frequently stripe-y critters, few of which are actually particularly closely related.

      Reply
    • What Brian said was correct, and it’s also noted in a sidebar in the chapter what kinds of real-world animals all these categories correlate to, even though it’s not in this writeup. So a polecat can be a European polecat or a skunk, broch covers several kinds of badgers, etc.

  2. Hey, I notice the Trinity continuum players guide isn’t in the ‘at press’ section, but I don’t believe the deluxe / traditional print version of that book went out? I see I still get the backer status updates in email, just curious if it was dropped or I’m just missing some piece of information?

    Reply
    • You can keep following James’s backer updates as he usually has a handy chart that gives you the progress for every part of the crowdfunding campaign, which I’m sure will let you know when things move forward. Thanks!
