What Evil Lurks in the Heart of Empire? [Monday Meeting Notes]

This is a wild week!

First, we have the finale of the M20: Victorian Age crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo on Thursday, and then we also have the start of the Trinity Continuum: Adventure! Kickstarter. Also on Thursday, but at 2pm Eastern US time!

So we go from one to the other. (Or at least, that was the plan but apparently Indiegogo decides when your campaign ends – another thing we have learned along the way – so there’s overlap we didn’t intend. Sorry.)

But sliding from one to the next also makes a kind of sense for these two game books. Both are set in “historical” eras where we take the cool stuff, the fun stuff, that popular culture has selected from and added to each time period and play with those aspects for our gaming. Our goal isn’t to ignore or try and hide the awful parts of those eras so much as provide ways for players to approach and/or deal with the racism, sexism, colonialism, and so many other issues that are part of those time periods.

In both games, the player characters are extraordinary and can be involved with extraordinary organizations. Some who challenge the status quo, and some who buttress it. Can magic and steam-punk change the M20: Victorian Age world? For the better? Or putting lofty goals aside, how much satisfaction will a TC: Adventure! player get from punching out a Nazi?

(That was a rhetorical question. We all know the answer is: A lot!)

But back to the games themselves and their crowd-funding campaigns!

Just a few more days left on the M20: Victorian Age campaign – how did we get here so fast? We’re closing in on $100K of pledges, and are over 1100 backers! Fantastic! We just passed the Stretch Goal to add more art to the book, something I always love to see, and we haven’t yet hit the end of the campaign surge. So plenty of room for awesomeness yet to go!

Like we mentioned a week or so ago, once M20: Victorian Age is done on Indiegogo on Thursday, we’ll be moving as fast as possible to BackerKit and are going to be continuing to tally the amount coming in and count them for Stretch Goals for backers for, I believe, 60 days. We think that should give the majority of our M20 supporters a chance to find the BK site and contribute, while still letting us do the boring banking reconciliation and all stuff that we need to get wrapped up after one of these campaigns.

Which brings us to Trinity Continuum: Adventure! and its KS starting on Thursday at 2pm EDT. TC: Adventure! is the third of the Trinity (Aeon) games that we have redone for this new edition inside the Continuum and it’s always been one of my favorites! More on why and just what’s so damn enjoyable about the Pulp genre will come up here in the weeks to come, but for now let’s start with the idea that anything could happen, the idea that you would find both wonders and perils if you chose to find them.

Adventure! is right around the corner!

Finally, in reference to the challenges of this era as noted above, here’s a quote from the team:

TC: Adventure! is an updated, more inclusive take on the pulp genre”. We’ll have more on just what that means once the KS goes live and excerpts start being released, and also on this Friday’s Onyx Pathcast when the crew take one of their patented Deep Dives into the game. See you Thursday!

Then There Was A Monday Meeting, See?

The Peoples of the Crossroads Continent PDF and PoD goes on sale this Wednesday, and I shared a bit of what that means to me with our Monday Meeting crew today. I figure we’re all friends here, so here’s a bit of that.

Little personal note here, in case you want to skip that sort of thing:

The Crossroads Continent is a world I started over 40 years ago, and we played an average of a game a week in that world through some of the most wrenching, awful times in my life. Yet, no matter what was happening in the real world, I could immerse myself in the creation of more detail for me, and more story lines and adventures for my players.

And I think it was a haven for my players. The high school kids who didn’t fit in, who wanted a camaraderie they didn’t find in the real world. The college students dealing with making choices and decisions which seemed to have unknowable outcomes, but who knew if they rolled a 20 in the CRC it’d be double damage. Players at the start of their careers, at the start of their families, at the beginnings and ends of marriages; they all came over to play knowing that the CRC was there, and I had a story for them.

So Peoples of the Crossroads Continent feels really special because of what it comes out of, and because most of the characters in there are player characters from over the years. It contains one of the first characters in the setting, Orville MacLoch, a seriously good-guy human Paladin played by one of the nicest guys I went to high school with, all the way through to several of the 5e group of playtesters from two years ago. Those characters that represent the Peoples in the book span the decades.

The book also represents in a lot of ways the culmination of over 40 years of creating. All the art, the graphics, the logo were created by myself, plus most of the writing. That also means a lot to me, but I’ll tell you that even with all that, the book wouldn’t be possible (nor anywhere near as useful) without the writing, graphic and layout work – and advice – that Travis Legge brought to the project.

Which tops off just how awesome it is to finally bring this small part of the CRC to any of you who are interested. TTRPGs are rarely one person creations, and Peoples of the CRC is no exception. It’s what makes our hobby magical

(Personal stuff over!)

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Since we know our friend Bill Bridges is a big fan, today we celebrate the birthday in 1937 of Angelo Badalamenti, American pianist and composer – particularly noted for his haunting music for Twin Peaks; a great soundtrack for gaming in strange and unusual settings.

  1. Watching Deviant and Mummy 2e creep closer to release every week, with Hunter 2e not far behind every step of the way, makes me so excited.

I’ve been playing since the nWoD launch in 2004 and my anticipation for all three books is becoming more than I can stand, in all the best ways.

  2. Hello! Hope all is well.

Is the Onyx Dice Rolling App available for the iOS devices yet? It used to be on the store but I know it was removed to be worked on.

    Reply
    • I don’t know, but we can ask the devs. Basically, in case that sounds strange, the dice roller is really more of a licensed product as we inside Onyx Path don’t handle any of the work or updating. We don’t have those skill-sets. But we can ask the devs who made and update it and see what’s up. Thanks!
