Funny you should ask!
2022 was a year of rebuilding, redirection, and regrowth, for Onyx Path, as well as an entire year of celebrating our 10th Anniversary as a company. I’d say, all in all, it was a good year.
In fact, here are some facts about our 2022, starting with:
Ian’s 2022 Release Retrospective: https://theonyxpath.com/release-retrospective-2022/
To boil it down, as there’s a link to just about everything Ian has listed: that’s about 100 projects released (almost two per week!), 6 crowdfunding campaigns (James must be tired!), and about 70 community content projects (great job, CC creators!).
Also, the fine folks at Geeknative compiled a bunch of top-seller lists from DTRPG – also compiled by Ian:
We had the #1, #3, #6, #11 on Horror RPGs
1: Hunter: The Vigil 2e
3: Forbidden Religions
6: They Came from Beyond the Grave!
11: They Came from Camp Murder Lake!
https://www.geeknative.com/149126/the-best-selling-horror-rpgs-published-on-drivethrurpg-in-2022/
We had the #1, #2, #4, #5, #6, #10, #14, #15, and #16! Almost half the top 20 of the Modern RPGs list!
1: Hunter: The Vigil 2e
2: Forbidden Religions
4: Scion Player’s Guide: Saints & Monsters
5: Scion 2e: Demigod
6: M20 Sorcerer
10: Kith and Kin
14: Masks of the Mythos
15: Operatives Dossier
16: Scion: Dragon
https://www.geeknative.com/149173/the-best-selling-modern-era-rpgs-published-on-drivethrurpg-in-2022/
We had #10 on Sci-Fi RPGs with Prometheus Unbound https://www.geeknative.com/149208/the-best-selling-sci-fi-rpgs-published-on-drivethrurpg-in-2022/
#6 on Family RPGs with Squeaks in the Deep
https://www.geeknative.com/149242/the-best-selling-family-rpgs-published-on-drivethrurpg-in-2022/
And finally, #6 and #8 on Misc RPGs
6: They Came from Beyond the Grave!
8: They Came from Camp Murder Lake!

There are some phenomenal games on these lists, and we’re truly honored to be listed with them – go ahead and click on the links if you want to find out more!
The best thing is: 2023 looks to be even better!
We’ll be launching the crowdfunding for Realms of Pugmire (Pugmire 2nd edition) near the end of this month, and later in the year we’ll be doing much the same for The World Below, our first true fantasy game using the Storypath System.
Which brings up the fact that we’re launching two new systems in 2023: the codified and streamlined version of Storypath for The World Below that we’re calling Storypath Ultra, and a d20 system for Realms of Pugmire! I don’t know if Eddy has already told folks the name of that system, so I’ll leave it at that to avoid stealing his thunder. But, if it goes over well, it’s possible that we’ll start using it for our other d20-style games!
It’s also possible that we’ll be launching and maybe even crowdfunding another game line or two, but that depends on many factors. Let’s just say that we feel like there is still a lot of room to be creative in genres we’re already well known for, as taking expectations and spinning them to create something even cooler is something we’ve been doing for quite some time!
We are definitely partnered with The Bodhanna Group to publish their Branch Riders game, and if the reports from their playtests at various conventions are any indication, this is going to be a game that people are going to love for a wide variety of different reasons. More to come with that as they get it closer and closer to crowdfunding and/or publication this year!
Part of what is allowing us to ramp up more games is that our creative and scheduling crews have worked extremely hard to catch up our schedules (although we’ve still got a bunch of projects to make that happen for), and so we can hit 2023 with a lot of forward momentum built up. Which is particularly gratifying after these last tumultuous three or four years.
We were also able to explore several crowdfunding options in 2022, which gives us more opportunities to try out a few kinds of campaigns that we’ve held off from due to the uncertainty of the last couple of years. Right now, we have a full crowdfunding schedule with both the Realms of Pugmire and The World Below campaigns already slotted in, as well as several you could probably guess at, including Trinity Continuum: Aegis, and Exalted: Abyssals.
But we also have some that are more…experimental in nature, at least for us. We’ve talked for years about an ultra-short campaign, or one just for reprints, or another “anthology-style” one. Well, with more crowdfunding options, we now have the chance to try out some of those ideas!
Plus, while printing, manufacturing, and shipping have sorta calmed down, we can also look around again at our options in those industries as well. Not as much fun to think about as new fun games, but nevertheless a vital part of us getting those cool games and books to you.
We’re also pretty jazzed about being able to put out more Virtual Tabletop projects (keep an eye out this month for the start of that), attend more conventions live and in-person – and still attend virtual ones, never fear, and to announce some more good news about both new and old deals outside of our own TTRPG area but into brave new media tie-ins!
2023 is going to be a wild year, I think!
We Resolve!
Every year, I ask our Onyx Path Monday Meeting team to look at the year ahead and fire off some thoughts on what they’d like to accomplish throughout it. These are their stories:
LisaT: Santa didn’t bring me a organizer – I guess I better take a stab at it myself!
Mike Chaney: New Year’s Resolution(s)
- Get the KS releases back on track. Had some setbacks, but progress is still being made.
- Fully rehab my right hand and wrist.
- Get back into semi fightin’ shape.
- To tackle the mountain of little plastic and metal army men while not buying anymore.
Dixie Cochran: I want to do good work, dive into new worlds and settings, and support the team to the best of my ability, as they’ve supported me when I was going through some tough stuff this year. I also swear the style guide will be updated by the end of January at the latest.
Travis Legge: I look forward to expanding and exploring worlds familiar and new this year! There are so many things in the works and it is an honor and privilege to be able to play a part in that.
Danielle Lauzon: This is going to be the year of brand new games. I’m so excited for people to see more of Storypath Ultra and the games we have coming for it. I’m not allowed to say much more than that, but y’all I’m so very excited to get these games announced and to have you feel the hype!!!
Ian Watson: Hoo boy! There’s a lot of amazing stuff for the Trinity Continuum that’s waiting in the wings to go out to the public — Adventure!, Anima, Aether, and more — and I hope we get as much of it out as we can. I hope we can continue our tradition of excellence in delivering fun and useful products and supplements.
Matthew Dawkins: I’ve inherited quite a few game lines over the last year, so my resolution is to ensure they receive the same (if not better!) treatment and supervision as they had in years gone by, to support the developers and teams on these books as much as I can, and to always be willing to listen to new ideas from the many creative souls on these many, many projects.
Eddy Webb: This year I resolve to find a new work/life balance for myself. It’s something I’m always working on, to be honest, but with me moving overseas this year, I’ll have new challenges, and it’ll be easier to slide either completely into work (to avoid the culture shock) or completely out of it (to avoid the challenges of working remotely overseas). I’m looking forward to charting a course for this new adventure in my life!
RichT: After this last year, wherein LisaT and I moved from our home of 17 years to a new town and new home – and all the endless planning and labor that involved; I’m looking at dedicating quality time for my coworkers – even if I just cut the amount of time it takes to get done reading a text for approval! More chats and social interaction with all of our creators – and our community! And also, carving out quality time to restore my broken body to a lighter, and less likely to break, version.

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
Yesterday was Onyx Path’s 11th year since being founded, so today we’re in our twelfth year of being in biz-ness! And even more importantly, today is little Ta-ta’s 4th birthday! Happy birthday, grand-daughter!
Cannot wait for Exalted Essence. Exalted has been one of my favorite game worlds since its release, and while I adore third edition, it’s far too crunchy and intimidating for my current groups. Reading through the manuscript, Essence looks to be just what we need to finally get my 20 year old campaign moving haha.
Very glad to hear it – allowing groups to use an easier “on-ramp” for EX3 was one of the prime goals for Essence. Let us know how it works out for your group!
Hello
Can you do a KS to print Mage : the Awakening, Promethean and Werewolf : tF 2nd ( a deluxe, traditional printing run) ?
This remains something not up to us, but to the folks at Paradox.
Would love to see more Chronicles games out, in addition to the grand plans you have listed. Hope Paradox comes around. Looking forward to hopefully not the last MtAw book…
Holy crap, my wallet would take a vicious beating for all those Deluxe prints, but it would be worth it!
If you were to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Chronicles of Darkness with deluxe printings of the revised Blue Book and the Second Editions of VTR through PTC inclusive, I would buy at least one of the resulting tomes.
I know. Still not something that’s up to us, however.
Wow, amazing HtV 2nd ed was so successful!
Also since this is a new year, and at the risk of being very annoying, can I please ask again if it would be possible to update the Redbubble store for Scion with the missing pantheon symbols from the Companion, Demigod, Dragon, and Mythos? Thank you!
Thanks, they’re still on the docket. When we have time, it’ll be great to be able to get those symbols on the store!
Thanks Rich! And the Deviant ones and updated Geist ones too please 😀
Any news or timelines for the forums coming back?
Great question! I did have a note to include the fix as part of our efforts in 2022, but skipped it when I wrote it out for the blog. Mostly because, in answer to your question, we don’t have any real news as yet. The process is processing. So far, so good.
You know, I actually haven’t talked about the new system name and whatnot. I’ll add that to my list of things to chat about!
d20 more like dog20 amirite
I see what you did there
So, for us systems geeks out there, can you talk yet about the relationship between Storypath Ultra and the present edition?
I have tried to get my group behind Storypath, but their complaint (my wording) is always that the presentation of the system is a bit to fragmented for them. Also, is there going to be a change to some of the naming conventions? Most of my group are old White Wolf players so having things use the term from those books, but with an inverse meaning, causes friction.
However it may come out, I hope for the best, and wish you and yours a happy new year
Danielle talked a bit about it either on a Twitch stream at a con or a YouTube video at a con. I don’t remember enough to be able to search to find it. There will be some naming changes, like hits instead of successes, I believe.
Currently looking over the Adventure manuscript and getting ideas for it by listening to old time Noir radio stories. While detective work man not necessarily be a Adventure focus, it does lean into the feel of the era. Some of these are post-war and pre war.
