Yes, that is my original copy of Vampire: the Masquerade first edition. Battered but still functional, like its owner.
This week, I’m flying down to New Orleans to meet up with a whole lot of other people who, I bet, still have their original VtM copies as well. Of course, I’m referring to the 2016 Grand Masquerade being held in celebration of the publication of VtM 25 years ago!
Not to mention everyone who got into Vampire: the Masquerade with the 2nd, Revised, or V20 editions. And those folks who first tasted the darkness with Vampire Dark Ages, the other World of Darkness game lines, the Minds Eye Theatre live action boxed set and books, the VTES card game, the computer games like Bloodlines, or even Kindred the Embraced on TV.
It has been one wild ride, with many beautiful and stirring moments, and quite a few ugly and bestial ones in there as well. For me personally, I mean.
From painting up what was essentially a sequential graphic story in first edition (who put things like that in an RPG back then?), to art directing and designing 2nd edition (some fond memories of how Chris McDonough and I ran alternating shifts outputting the pages 24 hours a day for a week in order to get it to press on time), to approvals and art direction frantically working with Justin during the Revised years (putting out a Clanbook a month, might have been, on reflection, a crazy idea), to the glory of coming back to art directing and laying out RPGs with Vampire: 20th Anniversary Edition (Eddy Webb and his Oxford comma corrections- Grrrr!), to the very satisfying opportunity to take the success of V20 and run with publishing beautiful new Vampire: the Masquerade books after years of torpor.
Hopefully your connection with Vampire has been equally amazing.
If you are at Grand Masquerade this week, please come by the booth and tell me about it!
Let me go back to that last bit in the big paragraph above: “to the very satisfying opportunity to take the success of V20 and run with publishing beautiful new Vampire books after years of torpor.”
I’m going to unpack that a bit, because it is actually a pretty big thing. Of the 25 years of VtM, the last five have been under the aegis of Onyx Path. Which is a very different thing than the previous 20 (or, you know, 20 minus the torpor years when the World of Darkness was “destroyed”).
And it all started with the Vampire 20th Anniversary Edition. The incredibly positive, and, to the higher-ups, unexpected, response to V20 validated the idea that tabletop RPGs are a legitimate way to build (or in this case, restore) a brand and build an audience. It allowed me to pitch the idea of Onyx Path and actually get traction with CCP with the idea that tabletop RPGs could be good for business.
And then convince them that they should license the IPs to this new company, Onyx Path, in order to make that happen.
Hard to believe after five years of enthusiastic response to our shepherding the line, but there you go: that was the atmosphere at the time.
That’s really how we continue to approach V20 and all the 20’s, and Chronicles of Darkness and Exalted as well: as a trust given to Onyx Path to respectfully rejuvenate these lines that were supposedly dead, or broken, or unplayable.
There were challenges, certainly, because of the limits of the license with CCP, but overall I think we have delivered as planned – and we’re on a roll with the books recently that I’m really thrilled with! I’m particularly happy with how we’ve been able to draw deep on the lore of 25 years while adding more layers of complexity and secrets to the mix. The Red List, Black Hand, and upcoming Beckett’s Jyhad Diary books all do this and are just incredibly engrossing to read.
And even more amazing V20/V20 Dark Ages books are yet to come this coming year.
Looking forward to the next 25 years!
Next week, I’ll be on the road returning from NOLA, so Rollickin’ Rose Bailey is going to step in and post the Monday blog with some thoughts of her own.

R the Ex3 books done printing?
Sections are finished, but that’s literally the printing part, not the assembling and gilding and cover binding and all that other manufacturing that goes on to form the book.
K thx ^^
Fingers crossed for MtAw 2nd POD this week!
In general, for a major release like M2, I’ll pre-announce when it is coming out that week. Sorry, not this week for M2.
I have a different con I’m attending this weekend, but I’ll be thinking about the Grand Masquerade. I mean, seeing y’all there on the 25th anniversary? Oh you know I’d bring MY (nearly pristine) First Edition AND my beat-to-hell Second Edition books to show off.
Someday…
Is it possible to get an update on what stage Hunter the Vigil / Slasher Chronicle is at? Couldn’t seem to find it anywhere above. Thanks!
If I can’t find an announced-but-not-yet-published product in Rose’s Report, I just assume it’s in that inchoate state before first draft.
Good thinking, that is exactly the case.
Pre-writing. Basically, all the prep work the developer goes through for the info they provide to the writers that gets the writers ready to write their sections of the book.
On one hand, color me surprised, that the first draft for Geist 2nd is In Progress while Hunter 2nd is in Pre.
On the other hand, it makes me think that Hunter’s changes are gonna be more significant than Geist’s.
All in all: exciting!
I’m really happy for the V:tM fans, and happy that White Wolf has continued to live on for over a quarter-century!
I’m hoping to hear that Werewolf: the Apocalypse will get love next year for its 25th Anniversary… a bit more than it got at Atlanta by Night in 2012.
I still tell folks about the “20 Years of Werewolf Retrospective” at the convention that turned out to be a small, but intimate conversation with the three of you and three attendees. And when I tell folks who were there at the con and missed it for the Vampire LARP, or other activities that happened, they regret not being there to talk to you and learn about the origins, the making of, and the stories behind the scenes. Again, thank you for that great memory from the 20th Anniversary. 🙂
Out of our hands, really. I definitely have memories of the first publication of WtA, as well as our KS for the 20th Anniversary edition, which I’ll relate next year, but as for a celebration at a con? You’ll need to talk to WWP and By Night and those guys. Although, do gear in mind that VtM started the whole thing, so it is both 25 years of VtM and of the World of Darkness as a literary thing. Without Vampire, we’d never have been able to create Weerewolf and Mage, etc.
“Handful of Dust PoD – waiting on the proof to arrive.”
Is this the Promethean chapter of Dark Eras being published as a stand-alone, or is it something else I’d not yet heard about?
Good eyes! I snuck that in to see if anyone would remark on it. It is indeed that chapter as a solo offering. More info on that next week!
Any hope of that Scion kickstarter going live this week?
Not while we’re preparing to ship out to three different conventions, including the Grand Masquerade, no.
And now I’m imagining Neall getting stuffed into a box and loaded onto a plane for shipping every time he gets fired.
Yes!
None at all. Please note the KS section in the Blurbs! for further details.
Here’s to all the 20th lines getting the kind of love and having the expansion of content Vampire has received when they reach 25.
First, we will get the projects coming out of their KSs finished up, then…
Just a lifted glass and a toast.
A tinge curious that Geist 2e seems to be starting in the first drafting phase before Hunter 2e. Any specific reason why or was it just the way things happened to work out, due to timing/scheduling/etc.?
The way things have worked out, with different developers moving at different speeds and with different working methods.
Not mention about VTM – Redemption?
Hmm…
Rich didn’t mention literally everything that the Vampire brand touched. Bloodlines is by far the more popular of the two PC games, so it makes sense that he’d mention it if he was going to mention anything at all.
Which is interesting since I think Redemption sold far more copies.
But yeah, as a cult classic, Bloodlines definitely holds more weight, despite Redemption giving me more playtime through the years.
Don’t worry, I know that was the reason, but, just I’ve recently said below, it deserves more love than it receives.
Now, as Unsilent Majority said, Bloodlines is a cult classic and that obscures VTMR, like once I had read a post giving a lot of credit to VTMB (which I presume, it was because of its status) and none to VTMR like it had failed, but, he ignored that at the time of its release, it was one of the best-selling video games, it was well received with some critical responses and it also had a couple of “bugs to fix”…
What about it?
Just saying it deserves more appreciation than it receives, because of everything it achieved and putting the gameplay aside, it’s a great Vampire: The Dark Ages/VTM video game, which also explored more parts of the lore than Bloodlines. On the other hand, VTM Bloodlines did a good job with the Vampire Politics and modern nights.
Geist!
Yes!
Is there any chance someone could nudge Rich Dansky? The same little bit about Art Notes has been there for months now in the MMN, and it’s a little disheartening to see zero apparent progress on the project.
Wraith is listed in Second Drafts. It’s not yet at the point where Rich would be typically be delivering art notes.
Yep… artnotes generally don’t head to me until the text goes to editing.
There has been progress, it is just very slow progress.
Any change we might see the scion Kickstarter this week. Made a reply earlier, but it seemed to have disappeared. Hope I’m not too much of a pain, for writing same question again. And thank you so much for Mage 2. Ed. Still having the wauw factor each time I read it.. So now I’m waiting for that pod..and Kickstarter.
As noted in the Blurbs! section under Kickstarters, we are still pulling the Scion KS together to go live in September. Thanks!
Are there going to be tilt cards?
For what?
The Pinball Wizard Legacy attainments. It was there, I couldn’t resist.
He likely means Environmental and Personal Tilt cards in a fashion similar to the Condition Cards for Chronicles of Darkness.
Is there any chance for a more detailed update concering the Tome of Secrets?
It has been in art direction for quite some time now (I’ve been crossing my fingers every Monday, hoping for it to move ;))
I’m not one for conventions (I don’t handle crowds well) but I always like hearing the news that comes out of them. 😀
I got into nWoD through Mage almost 7 years ago but quickly fell for Werewolf and Promethean. I feel OPP has done a commendable job with the IPs as a whole and look forward to what’s next. I’m also curious to see what the new WWP will do with the Classic lines.
As an aside (and if I may be so bold), I’d really like to see more offerings for the current lines/2nd editions rather than new lines every year or two. Mummy was excellent, Demon was pretty good, but Beast and Deviant are both leaving me “meh.” I know that Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage were nicknamed something like “the big three” but I feel that all the lines could benefit from such expansion once they have 2nd editions released.
Glad to see Geist on the list. My troupe’s got a game on hold right now (we finished the prologue that got us all killed and revived shortly after the GMC/2nd Editions started rolling out so we decided to wait for the updated rules).
Anxious for Scion’s KS. Hopefully I can scrape together some cash before the 30 days are up.
Geist 2nd Edition! Even if it’s just in 1st Draft its great to see it in the works. I have a player who is extremely excited for a update to that game line.
I’ll have a friend attending the Grand Masquerade this year, he’s coming over from Florida. Hope it’s a great event.
Any news on when the GenCon panels might go up?
Also, who is developing Geist 2e?
After Gen Con I went on vacation and since then I’ve been working on a handful of other things including prep for the Kickstarter, and the three conventions this weekend.
Once that’s settled down some I’ll have the chance to upload what I can from Gen Con.
Cool thanks, looking forward to it.
How is Secrets of the Covenants coming along? as one among many people really looking forward to it i was wondering if there is an ETA.
Anything new from Wraith 20th? It’s been stuck for ages.
There are monthly updates posted to the Kickstarter page. One just went out today.
Hi Rich,
Apologies if this has been answered recently and I’ve just missed it, but while we’ve been getting regular updates on the Matt Forbeck Exalted novel in these updates, is there any word on Jess Hartley’s Novia novel?
Glad to hear about the GM 2016. I had plans to go but right after the announcement, I had some things come up that abruptly changed my plans. Still, I’ll be drooling to hear what goodies came out of this year and hoping that I can make the next one.
I was at the GM 2011 and getting my hands on V20 and meeting everyone was a major highlight and treasured memory for me, to this day.
Ya’ll putting that book out got things going again for me and those in my crew that got into the game because of it.
May OPP have much success in the years to come.
So I see C20 is in editing, WOOT! Two questions
1- what does the page count look like at the moment(ballpark figure)?
2- have you decided the color of the two extra silk bookmarks?
Congratulations on Vampire’s 25th Birthday!
I’m looking forward to getting Changeling and Wraith when they are ready, and have to admit that I’m more than interested in looking at your range of Storypath supers games.
The future looks bright these days, as well as dark.
