This week, our meetings were a large part about Gen Con items and their status in terms of getting done, who would be demoing at the booth, and what materials would be needed for their demos. Our work from here until Gen Con will be focused a lot on those things as well.
But, I also brought up that it is time to pull together the Deluxe Beckett’s Jyhad Diary Kickstarter campaign. So we talked about that for quite some time.
Not because we never have before, but because now it is real. Now we make the what-ifs into reality.
In fact, because we’ve talked about the Deluxe Beckett JD Kickstarter before, I wrote my post last week about every project being different. If you missed it, and seriously, how could you? sob, please take a look before you continue this post as it sets the stage for this one.
The rest of us will take the time to peruse this freaky piece of art from Secrets of the Covenants:
Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is an unusual book. Not completely a game book, not completely fiction.
Even when Fast Eddy Webb and I first conceptualized the project, we really went around on the idea for a while. What I was looking for was a book that revitalized the mysterious nature of classic WoD by going into detail about mysteries,Β yet would also beΒ the narrative bridge that got us over the books leading up to and includingΒ Gehenna. So, a simple request, really.
It was Eddy who suggested the “unreliable narrator” be our old friend Beckett, which was a masterstroke because Beckett himself epitomizesΒ the kind of book I was looking for. A Noddist scholar who may or may not believe the lore he is discovering, beast-marked Gangrel who tries not to kill mortals, cynical loner who still got sucked into the machinations of the Jyhad. What would he write about in his personal journal, and how much can you believe?
Plus, the contents of the book aren’t just his notes from all the years; there are passages of fiction, and sections where authors Neall Raemonn Price, Joshua Alan Doetsch, Matthew McFarland, Myranda Sarro, Steffie de Vann, Malcolm Sheppard, Alan Alexander, Renee Knipe, and Matthew Dawkins provide ideas for all that and how to include Beckett’s notes in your own Chronicles.
Plus, plus, once we sent the text over to the new White Wolf Publishing for approvals, they had some excellent tweaks and changes that were very flavorful.
Which brings us to the upcoming Deluxe Beckett’s Jyhad Diary Kickstarter and the fact that we really want to focus on making the sexiest Deluxe book we’ve created yet.
First of all, we know that our concept is to create a cover treatment that feels like this could actually be Beckett’s diary. Something that he has carried for years, that has survived his most dangerous encounters. Battered, leathery, but cool.
Around 7″ x 10″, which is a Deluxe size we haven’t played with before, and specced at over 200 pages to start.
So that’s our baseline, and we are going to try and design this KS to keep the focus on this book being made more awesomeΒ specifically because of going through a Kickstarter, like I said before. Really, this was why we started using crowd-funding to begin with: to be able to do things with the projects we normally couldn’t. We’re not trying to build the releases for the game line like we often do with our KS’d projects.
But we’re not heartless, we still want to have a little wacky fun, so we’re looking into adding new V20 dice to this Kickstarter. 10-sided, of course, but what else would folks like in such a set?
We could go with higher end, carved dice from our friends at Q-Workshop who are doing our Changeling 20th dice. I’m not seeing them with anything that looks like marble, but green on black looks very Vampire, and some sort of thorns design around the numbers with an ankh for the 0 might be sweet.
Give me a yell here and let us know what sort of V20 dice you’d like to see us include as part of this KS!
Thanks!
Oh, yes, keep an eye out next week for when the KS will go live- might be next Tuesday even-

TODAYβS REASON TO DRINK: I hab a thold…so…Nyquil and bourbon.
Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is probably my most anticipated OP KS, ever.
I will throw all of my money at it for the hard work contained within.
With that said, I know what you guys are going for in terms of the look of the deluxe edition, but have you settled on the specifics? Colors, etc.?
And has any of the OP paid attention to e3? Any of you gamers of the video kind?
E3 was kind of a letdown for the most part. Very few new IPs, lots of smoke and mirrors, and EA is apparently releasing another Battlefront, when the last one wasn’t even a year old.
Hm. I’m loving it so far. Both Sony and Microsoft had a TON of games and new IPs I’m going to be heavily interested in the coming months.
So excited about that Beast Prestige Edition. My horror stirs in its slumber as the time draws closer…
since The Dreaming is now at the development stagee, could you guys make a open Dev posr about the Chrysalis of a Changeling?
Hello Rick,
Just curious about the development of the other Exalted books in the pipeline.
Can we expect any preview or development blog in a near (Or not so near) future ?
Thanks !
Alex
If the Devs send me a preview or excerpt, I’ll be glad to post it. I certainly think it’s a good idea, but such a thing has to work into their development process.
Gonna grab the Pack when it’s out on PoD! Digging Secrets of the Covenants art.
Two questions!
One, are we going to hear anything about a next Werewolf the Forsaken book? Or is it something we’ll wait for Gencon for? I ask because an older Gencon brochure said that Secrets of the Tribes was next, but AFAIK we’ve heard nothing of it.
Two! I know as much about rights to stuff as you’ve posted on the blog here and that Chronicles doesn’t seem to have the okay to allow most stuff to be made. But have you checked out Kindle Worlds?
https://kindleworlds.amazon.com/faqs?topicId=A3KK1A6E147K3E
It’s basically an Amazon-based fanfiction ebook system.
You will certainly hear about new projects for all the lines as we bring them forward. The GenCon brochure and connected announcements is going to be even further from a “schedule” this year than ever before, but with more details on upcoming projects listed with the lines.
We’re aware of the Kindleworlds projects and have interesting ideas for our own game worlds that we think could work along similar lines, but we don’t have the right to offer the WWP-owned WW IPs into something like that unless they tell us they’d like us to.
Seeing Changeling eek out ahead of Wraith on the timeline has me biting my nails a little. I am anxiously awaiting both projects, but am definitely hoping to see Wraith first.
It’s not a horse race π Each book will get the attention it needs and deserves before publishing.
Beckette’s Diary just sounds so awesome. I can’t wait. I’d like something like that for Werewolf. A new Silver Record style book.
Waiting for The Pack, MtAw 2.0, Ghouls 20th to hit PoD.
Will we see some previews of Secrets of Covenants soon?
Previews for SotC are up to Rose, but I did slide you an art peak this week. π
*arches an eyebrow* Wow..Changling 20th is rocking on to the step after 2nd draft, while Wraith hangs there still. Will Changeling be being held back if it finishes ahead of Wraith? Or will it really be, as it looks like, getting C20 before Wr20?
I don’t think so.
At least I couldn’t think of any logical reason do hold C20 back because of Wr20.
I am nervous about that as well, but honestly I have my doubts that Wraith 20 isn’t in development. They have been talking about “fully developed chapters” for a long time now in the kickstarter notes. I know each dev at OPP gets to use their own process and I’m wondering if Rich D. sort of works on various parts of the process simultaneously based on what they’ve released to backers and how they’ve described it as “doing one chapter at a time”. That’s what I’m hoping anyway.
Yes, RichD works on finalizing a chapter at a time.
We won’t be holding any of our projects back because of other projects. Really, why would we? As per last weeks’ blog, every project is different and each takes the time it takes to get them the way we want them and ready for ya’ll.
The full-size preview document doesn’t load on Drivethrurpg or Rpgnow for Dark Eras. It says the file is empty. This has been the case since the product went up, and is true on every computer and browser; not just a problem with the one I’m using. The same is true of Exalted 3rd Edition and The Pack. Other full-size preview documents, like for Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition and Beast: The Primordial, are opening the way they’re supposed to.
We’ll look into it, thanks.
You’re welcome! It would be nice to be able to see the full-size preview before buying.
Should be fixed now.
It’s loading for Dark Eras and Exalted but not for The Pack. Is it correct for the Exalted preview to start with the last page of the index (showing Chapters Six, Seven, Eight and Nine) instead of the first?
I dig the artwork that you’ve added to the Monday Notes. A nice touch.
I’ve been impressed to see that Onyx Path has 10 titles in top 20 Best Seller list (as of Monday evening)on Drive Thru RPG. Good to see.
“Give me a yell here and let us know what sort of V20 dice youβd like to see us include as part of this KS!”
I hope it is not rude of me to respond to this with something that isn’t dice related(apologies if it is), but seeing as ‘Beckett’s Jyhad Diary’ is going to be revisiting some of Vampire the Masquerade’s classic signature characters, perhaps it might be cool to do a re-release of the Clan Novel series as part of the Kickstarter. These novels featured a lot of signature characters so it seems appropriate (at least in my mind) to re-release these novels into print alongside the release of ‘Beckett’s Jyhad Diary’.
I know these novels are currently available as PDF’s, but I think it would be cool to be able to purchase physical copies of the novels as well.
I like the idea, and we’ll include that on our list if possibles. Bear in mind two things that might be mitigating, though, there might be missing files and such that prevent good PoD versions, and that we’ve seen a lot of anti-faction comments when we add those sorts of goals to our KSs.
“might be next Tuesday even-”
*THUD*
*picks up dazed body from floor*
Do you mean the KS itself might be next Tuesday, or the announcement for when it will be?
Either is possible.
*THUD*
Huh. Promethean’s moving forward fast. If the tempo persists, we’ll probably get it in July.
C20 is still available for preorder on Backerkit π
https://deluxe-changeling-the-dreaming-20th-anniversary-ed.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders
…and the vigil for Secrets of the Covenants continues….
Hello
Is Jyhad Beckett Diary and Black Hand part of the One World of Darkness storylines ?
Both books were designed for the V20 line, and were well in progress before the new WWP came on the scene with their ideas for a new edition. That being said, we have worked with WWP so that both books’ content “leans toward” the direction for the new edition.
So when can we look forward to the Scion 2 KS?
Pencilled in for sometime around September
Any chance I can convince you to post art from the pentex indoctrination guide? π
I really like the art featuring kickstarter live models. And I know some of us will end up in there. π
I’ll ask the Mirthful One.
Have I ever told you you’re the best? I really should.
Thanks a lot! π
I’d love to get a peek at the revisions requested by WWP, just to see where things might be heading.
But them I’m a nosy git. π
V:tM-themed dice is a cool idea.
I know there’s already been three V20 Storyteller Screens but I would love to see one for each sect, with appropriately themed artwork.
Clan bookmarks, a deck of themed poker cards and a V:tM document wallet for ST’s to keep character sheets and notes in would be fun.
Of course my reaccuring dream is for a Masquerade version of Prince of the City but that would be a whole Kickstarter in it’s own right.
What’s the status on last year’s announced “Deviant: the X” I realize that it might have gotten lost in the shuffle with the Paradox take over but I haven’t forgotten about it! What’s the word on this project?
Concerning the V20 dice, I would love them to be more practical than the ornate sets a lot of games have been releasing lately (C20, CoC7e, etc). Immediate legibility should be the prime concern. If anything, I think the quality and make of the dice could be the selling point. A new take on the classic rose could be cool and still be distinctive.
Hi !
Just one question about the CofD / 2nd Ed. versions:
Are the currently on Drivethrough available “2nd Ed.” versions of Vampire and Werewolf the last & correct versions concerning the “Chronicles of Darkness” rules or will there be a round of minor overhauls to fit them to the latest incarnation of “CofD” ? I mean we had the GMC then 2nd. Ed. then CofD … I just want to be sure that waiting for some more month won’t do me any good here …
And of course there is still the question if you’d do a KS for the CofD books in the foreseeable future.
Probably I have to wait until GenCon for that answer … π
We can’t imagine that we will be tweaking VtR2 and WtF2 beyond what has already been done. Go ahead and buy them with a clear mind!
Now that the big five cWoD lines are done or in the making. Any plans for Hunter the Reckoning, Kindred of the East or other smaller cWoD lines getting deluxe 20th anniversary handling?
I’d for a Mummy20 as I’m not 100% happy with Mummy:the Curse …
But I can wait until 2021 …
… but of course this year would be the 20 years anniversary of Mummy 2nd Ed …
Very different game lines, and one is for Chronicles of Darkness. No plans to do a 20th for any version of Mummy, though. Sorry.
The least odd way to say this would be: there aren’t not plans for some of those. Except that was odd, too. Maybe we go with: keep an eye out for our future plans as we announce them. thanks! Really, any of those are possible in the future.
Hi, I know that is something unlikely but not impossible. It would be nice in the future, negotiate with non-American publishers and make a combined campaign Kingstarter in several languages (German, Spanish, etc.). It would be nice to join the fans of both sides of the pond and it sure would unlock more goals.
I been meaning to ask, how long does it usually take to go through the “printer” process? maybe if you get notifications you can write on that next week? seems like BtP Prestige has been “at the printer” or something like that for a bit now. I won’t ask for a time estimate to ship, but surely since you’ve been doing this for a long time you can enlighten us on the steps and how long they generally take.
Good idea for a blog, sure!
Finally an OP KS I will be able to fund. Going to save as much as possible for it since there’s aways awesome stuff to get
Clearly legible dice, please. bold, strongly lined numbers. Nothing kills my dice rolling buzz faster then having to squint and peer at my dice.
… will I be able to pledge to the Kickstarter solely to get some of the dice? I still have several treasured sets of the World of Darkness dice you guys used to do. (If you can find some sort of… PoD dice maker, they’d be an excellent thing to do again on their own.)
Yes, that would be great if such a service started up. We would love that. For now, though, we’re not going to dive into the dice business so much as offer special dice as part of our Kickstarters for our books. Thanks!
