And That Was the Gen Con That Was. [Monday Meeting Notes]

 IMG_0102

Yep, that’s our booth, with both Mikes, Mirthful and Hollywood, wearing the Onyx Path colors and ready to rumble.

Er, uh, I mean: ready to chat about your favorite Onyx Path games!

Hard to believe that just last week we were all just getting back from Gen Con 2016. After all the months of hard work and planning, we dove into Gen Con and emerged on the other side happy, exhausted, and energized about all the good feedback we got from our community, creative contributors, and prospective creative contributors and business partners.

The crowds come pouring in on Day One!

Matt McElroy secretly counts how many books we have left to sell…

As you might be able to see in the pics above, we were experimenting this year with having our booth major in demoing and other friendly introductions to our worlds and Onyx Path in general, with a minor in selling books. Our minor, we got an A in, as we sold out of pretty much everything by Saturday. If we had been majoring in sales, I would have been concerned that we hadn’t brought more to sell, but as it was the booth kept hopping even without a lot to sell folks.

Eddy Webb running a Pugmire demo.

Our demoing went off amazingly well, with Eddy running 5 Pugmire demos, and Mike Hollywood running two; but the second was a huge eight person event that used both demo tables pushed together! Rose ran 7 Cavaliers of Mars and a couple of Chronicles of Darkness demos, and Neall ran several Scion 2nd Edition demos demonstrating the new Storypath System at the booth – and three actual multi-hour game sessions with our friends the Wrecking Crew in their gaming area.

Next year, we think we’ll structure the demos with actual sign up times. This year we kept it very ad hoc, with people in the booth ready to demo if asked, just to see how that would go. Even though we had the opportunities I mentioned above, I think letting folks know we’ll have certain demos at certain times, and still being able to offer impromptu sessions, might just give us the advantages of set times people can plan for, as well as being able to jump in with demos as folks come up with questions at the booth.

People really getting into the Dark Eras and DE Anthology signing panel.
People really getting into the Dark Eras and DE Anthology signing panel.

Our many panels went off really well this year. We think we managed to record all of them, but until Ian gets back, reviews them, and posts them, we’ll have to wait with bated breath. Rose points out that the Storytelling Tricks panel went especially well, with lots of great interaction from the audience, and the Pugmire/Cavaliers panel was easily four times the attendance than we had last year. Wonder if a really successful Pugmire Kickstarter was in any way a part of that?

We met with so many folks wanting to pitch ideas and find ways to work together, as well as what seemed like every old White Wolf employee we ever worked with (which, of course, wasn’t the case as there are still many, many, folks that aren’t in the business any longer). We also encountered, met with, had some laughs with and scary tales of death with, Martin Ericsson from the new White Wolf Publishing. Which was really great for the members of Onyx Path‘s team who had not yet met Martin in person. He even helped us tear down our booth:

And the walls came tumbling down!
And the walls came tumbling down!

Our pallet sits in plastic wrapped beauty waiting to be picked up as Martin and Monica discuss deep writing matters.

And with that, our time in Indy drew to a close. We ended it as it had begun, with shrimp cocktails at the airport branch of Harry and Izzy’s and the spiciest shrimp cocktails evah! I mean, they are so intense with horseradish that your head spasms and tears have been known to dribble down one’s cheeks. But in a really good, addictive, way.

I mean, I took a picture of the cocktails. I love them soooo much.

Next week: back to busy-ness!

BLURBS!

We’re looking at our next KS campaign being for Scion 2nd Edition in late August. Neall and I sat down at Gen Con to discuss the last details, in fact. More news when we have it!

    • I always let backers know when the books are shipping, no worries, and yes, we’ll be sending the books and screens together. That’s always the plan, even if the shippers sometimes accidently forget some screens. 🙂

  4. Just so you know, the status updates are full of A’s with tildes over them, and Euro signs, and other nonstandard characters I can’t type on my phone (or, at least, they are when I view them on my phone). The email notification got to my inbox without any such problems, so I thought I’d speak up.

  5. So, about those Trinity Continuum books in first draft… any chance we’ll see those Kickstarters before the end of the year?

  6. I am curious about Pentex. It’s been in the editing/post editing development cycle for a while now, but hasn’t gone into art direction during that time, when must other books do shortly after editing behind (like C20 and BoS did this week). Could you update us on what is different about the Pentex text that is keeping it out of art direction longer than the other projects?

    Reply
    • Right now, we need art notes from Stew Wilson that cover the changes/additions to the text. Until he gets those to Mirthful Mike, Mike can’t do the art buy.

      • Thanks for the update. Pentex is one of the upcoming books I’m looking forward to the most. I appreciate the info.

  7. Sounds like gencon was awesome! I will say was a little surprised their weren’t any announcements for any new classic world of darkness stuff. Maybe I missed it or it wasn’t as much in that regard this year.

Hoping you guys have some new v20 stuff planned!

Either cheers on a great event!

    • We had a whole panel about that very thing. During the panel, we noted that we have something like 8 V20/V20 Dark Ages projects that we still need to deliver and are focusing on through 2017 until next August. Anything past that date we wouldn’t be announcing anyway, and meanwhile we are talking with the new White Wolf Publishing about all sorts of things. But those things are not projects we can announce, as they aren’t just our things to announce.

  8. Cannot wait for that Scion Kickstarter to hit.

And hey, Rio is finally in layout! Did you secretly plan all along to have that release tie into the Olympics? 😉

    Reply
      • I felt very defensive when I read this comment, so I calmed down a bunch before I wrote a reply. I guess everyone is a little patriotic deep down.

It was probably a knee jerk reaction to the Lochte situation, and the Belgian judo guy. Two cowards trying to run from whatever little consequence their acts would’ve brought by kicking people that are already down.

Rio is, in many locales, a very shitty place to be. It is very dangerous. People get executed for making a wrong turn into a drug cartel controlled neighborhood. Like a cop did during the Olympics (don’t hear the media fuss though, shit happens everyday, right?). Like a doctor did just coming back from work a couple weeks ago. Like countless citizens have in the past.

I’m sorry if this is a bit of a ramble. I would just like people to understand that Rio has many problems, and the brunt of it is endured everyday by it’s citizens.

Murder, rape, theft, racketeering, police brutality… All everyday occurrences. I hope the writers had an inkling to that before the Olympics and these sorry side spectacles.

A few privileged jocks slinging mud on a filthy face as to distract from their indiscretions in order to “not get in trouble” with their girlfriends and moms, and hear people, including Olympics officials, refer to these 30 year old men as “boys” doesn’t make Rio scarier.

Walking in the shoes of a native certainly does, though. Necropolis Rio should reflect this.

        Reply
        • I think we are coming at this the same way. I wasn’t even aware of some of the stuff like Loche when I wrote the comment, but was referring to the other issues you mention. And I know how rough things are in Rio from the stories told to me by my friends and our community in Brazil. Also from the issues we have faced shipping books to backers there. No other country gives us the degree of difficulties in getting a package to a backer, and from what I’ve heard from folks there, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Yet despite all the challenges they face, the Brazilian people are some of the friendliest, most energized, members of our community I’ve ever met, and the fact that they can be so great in the face of the dangers of places like Rio is incredibly impressive.

          Reply
          • Thanks for your reply Rich. I probably had observer’s bias because of all the exposure from the Olympics being here.

Thank you for your response and for being, as usual, a gentleman while giving it.

    • From the post:

  9. Glad to hear about Scion. Disappointed it’s coming right in the middle of me getting ready to move my wife and I ~200 miles and get settled into new jobs. $$$ is going to be tight but hopefully I can scrounge up enough for a PDF copy.

Earlier (it may have even been in response to a Scion Development article), I requested/suggested a translation/conversion guide between 1st and 2nd editions and you were receptive to the idea. Can you “yea” or “nay” if that’s going to happen. I have Hero and have wondered if it’s worth finishing out the series or just skipping them and waiting for 2nd (granted, the above-mentioned move makes book purchases difficult).

    Reply
  10. I know you do not like to give estimates, but I would think the Exalted printer may be more likely to have some estimates.

Any idea on when all the interiors will be complete as well as when the final product will be done?

  11. Wasn’t there talk at last year about the next iteration of Vampire, (Vampire 4th Ed?) am I remembering that correctly?

If so, was there any news on that by chance?

    Reply
    • Short answer: as part of the purchase of the WW IPs, the new White Wolf Publishing asked us to stop work on the project we were starting, and they are creating a new edition of WoD in general and Vampire: the Masquerade specifically that takes the place of what we were calling 4th Edition. More news on our involvement with 5th Edition VtM when we are free to discuss it.

Long answer: I posted about this on one of the blogs after the WW IP purchase in some greater detail, and if anyone can post a link, that would be appreciated.

  13. Hey Rich. I’m loving Ex3 so far. That said, I’m actually looking forward to seeing Arms of the Chosen progress and release. I get that production on suppliments was probably put on the back burner until the core and Miracles of the Solar Exalted were released but now that that’s happened, I was sort of hoping for a little commentary on Arms soon. Is it still next in line to be finished? Anything else you can tell us about it?
