And I don’t mean the ones in Mage 20th…
But before we wave fond farewell to all the gaming conventions of 2016, and before I start blabbing about the ones in 2017, let me share with you some thoughts about just what Onyx Path did, and why, at our recent spate of cons over the Labor Day Weekend.
First of all, that pic above is our booth at the Grand Masquerade 2016 in New Orleans. Pictured from left is Booth Manager Bill Bodden, who did a fantastic job helping folks and answering questions all four days, as well as doing the set up and break down, and driving halfway across the country with our books and booth. Next is a vagrant straight off the hot and humid streets. Then the Gentleman Gamer himself, developer Matthew Dawkins, who flew over the pond to lend his painfully dry wit and games-mastering skills to our little band. And last but certainly not least, we have Mighty Matt McElroy, who also did the driving and loading for the booth, and was in what seemed like a zillion meetings.
These guys can attest to one of the points that I want to bring up about why I often talk about us attending conventions: they give us a chance to talk to folks who still do not know who Onyx Path is, what books we make, or that you can get them online or in select stores. Despite 5 years of business, we are still spreading the word!
Part of the reason might have been that Grand Masquerade, specifically, is much more of a Live Action Role Playing venue, and so there are attendees who have focused their gaming on LARPing only, and just don’t know or need to know what Onyx Path has been creating and publishing. Which is certainly part of the story, I think, although we do run into attendees at Gen Con who aren’t aware of us. So while we sold almost everything we brought, and we brought a fair bit, what we were most glad about were the number of folks we could introduce to Onyx Path and our game books. (To be fair, there were also people there who didn’t know about the new White Wolf Publishing, or who was who in terms of us or By Night Studios.)
So, quick recap: there is a new company called White Wolf Publishing who bought the rights to the old White Wolf‘s game lines. They have not yet put out any projects, but have big plans. The companies that are publishing the WW game lines under license from the new WWP are By Night Studios for Live Action gaming, and Onyx Path Publishing for tabletop RPG gaming.
Speaking of the old White Wolf gang, a bunch of the past owners and CEOs and stuff were at Grand Masquerade as well. Here we are with 3/5s of the new White Wolf:
Standing from left: me hunched over, Mark Rein*Hagen, Stewart Wieck, Mike Tinney, Steve Wieck, Travis Williams, Justin Achilli. Sitting, from the new WW, are Karim Muammar, Dhaunae De Vir, and CEO Tobias Sjogren.
Twenty-five years later, and it was just like back in the day. This photo was taken right after our “old WW” panel, wherein we tried to simultaneously look back on decades of decisions and events and analyze them, and also crack each other up. Before that panel was a new WW Q&A panel, which I understand was a bit more rambunctious with many direct and concerned questions from the audience.
There were many events, parties, dinners, and meetings. Dave Martin and The Wrecking Crew both ran many tabletop games for us and also recorded podcasts (I’ll let you all know when they start airing the ones we recorded at NOLA).
I had five or six game pitches at me (or promised to pitch), and even a typical “I’ll just take a seat in the hotel lobby (bar) by myself for a second” became a meet and greet between old WW friends, convention attendees, and new business friends. Which was awesome and friendly and fun. The By Night Studios gang were absolutely fantastic and welcoming and a special tip of the hat to their CEO, Jason Carl, who they must have cloned because I saw his unflappable and friendly face everywhere settling the usual problems for an event this size, and asking what he could do to make the show better.
Here we are again at the end of the “Dining With Darkness” dinner for special attendees, and I include this pic because it includes both Shane Defreest, who is now with the new WWP, and also Greg Fountain, who was one of the best marketing gurus old White Wolf ever had, and a wonderful person in general:
L to R: Stewart, Mike, Mark, Steve, Justin, Shane, Greg, me. And finally one more pic, of the remaining ex-WW gang who came down for the event, at dinner in the hotel restaurant, which was excellent:
I don’t know how he did it, but Matthew Dawkins managed to take this picture during the only time during the meal we were not laughing uproariously. That’s me, my partner in crime for decades Aaron Voss, and Chris McDonough who bravely led the fight for as long as he was allowed trying to bring the WoD MMO to life.
Meanwhile, in Canada, these two lunatics spread the word about Onyx Path with our brochures, running Pugmire games, and by sitting on panels at the Fan Expo Canada in Toronto. A good time was had by all:
Meanwhile meanwhile, Mirthful Mike had a birthday, and Rose held down the fort and stepped in to write last week’s MMN blog. Hope you all caught that and her recollections of how Cavaliers of Mars came to happen.
So now, old-home week in NOLA is over, the summer of conventions has passed, our projects begin to move forward again, and so does Onyx Path. This week, we are putting up for sale one of the Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras chapters as a discrete PoD physical booklet to see if folks would enjoy being able to get physical copies of just the chapters they are most interested in. We’ll be putting up these Dark Eras chapters when we can, as we see how this experiment goes. This week, it’s A Handful of Dust, the Promethean Dark Era.
Next week I’ll tell you about a couple of fantastic changes to our company, and we should be looking at the Scion 2nd Kickstarter starting sometime next week, too. Until then, here is some beautiful art, and a teaser pic of another project that is ready for backers:

TODAY’S REASON TO DRINK: To our friends at White Wolf: past, present, and THE FUTUUUUURRRRRE!!!
Overjoyed to hear Scion is coming so soon and to see Necropolis: Rio and Secrets of the Covenants moving along.
I have to ask, why would the Scion Kickstarter start Tuesday or Thursday, but not on Wednesday? Was there a scheduling conflict with the Tabletop RPG Illuminati’s weekly board meetings?
Don’t be silly. That is on Friday. They update the ‘for sale’ stuff for drivethru rpt on Wednesday. New sales at least.
And that’s actually a pretty good reason to avoid Weds with a Kickstarter, actually.
We’ve found that if we can’t get it ready for the Tuesday, we generally need two days to get it ready, not rushing to do it Weds. I think there is Lso some data suggesting that Tues and Thurs are days when folks are most attentive to online info coming at them. But don’t quote me on that.
Knowing, half the battle, etc.
Any news on when we might see Shattered Dreams finally release? Been so excited to see it, and get a chance to read Onyx Path’s awesome work.
It is coming soon. Very close now.
Interesting. I’m curious to see how the individual chapters of Dark Eras sell. I’m sure there will be a market for some of them.
Well, I think it is worth trying, at least. DE itself is a huge book, and it might not be possible for some folks to pony up the price.
I really appreciate this move for this specific reason. I have an article going up about the cost creep of RPGs in general today and I wish I had seen the commentary about the Dark Eras chapters before submitting it. Anything that shifts the hobby towards being a little more accessible makes me happy.
Plus it’s useful for people who are fans of only a few lines. If you like vampire you might not want to shell out for an entire book that only has one and a half Vampire eras.
I just bought Handful of Dust, even though I’m not particularly interested in it, specifically because I want to encourage you guys to release the rest of the chapters individually. I bought at PDF level, but there are other chapters I would buy a hard copy of.
I’m never going to buy the Dark Eras book. Too expensive, too many pages for ease of consulting in play, too heavy for me to consider transporting it to a gaming table. But counter-intuitively, if I was able to buy individual chapters, I’d probably spend an equal amount of money buying them.
The Scared Lands Players Guide PF seems to have fallen off the page. Is it still in pricing our is it out to backers?
The PDF of the Pathfinder version is off to backers. The Physical version of both will come out at the same time.
The PDF went out to backers last week. We’re working on the 5th Ed. PDF for backers next, then both will go to press.
:). Thanks. I wasn’t able to get in on that kickstarter, but have been in a D&D chronicle lately so I’m curious about for Scarred Lands does.
A Festival of Blades is a boss title!
With it so far along, is there any hope of us seeing a preview for any of the Dark Eras Companion chapters?
Will there be a way for people who missed the Ex3 KS to buy the charm cards, or are they a backer-only thing? If so, will they be PDF/PoD (online) only, or will there be a way to order through an FLGS?
We don’t usually do “backer only” products coming out of our KSs, so the EX3 Charm Cards will be made available on DriveThruCards once we get feedback on the Backer PDFs. No worries!
Rich, I know it’s a bit personal question, but do I get it right that Aaron Voss is your life partner, not just gaming buddy?
Aaron is one of the unsung heroes of old White Wolf. Not only was he responsible for coordinating all of our traditional printing efforts when I was in charge of Production, but he stepped up every time WW needed somebody who could organize, create, and lead. So he volunteered to lay out books when we were slammed, or seek out new merchandise possibilities when that area was languishing, or to do his level best to help all of the WW folks transition to CCP’s way of doing things and the MMO. Best friends and he’s the Spock to my Kirk, and we have shared so many life moments and hotel rooms (600ish) that it certainly seems like we’re life partners! But nope, we’re both happily married to wonderful women.
The Handful of Dust Dark Eras chapter seems like an odd choice as a first standalone release given Promethean 2E has just been made available and this chapter is very much for 1E. Why that one and not one of the chapters which is already set for one of the “current” editions?
It’s the one Mirthful Mike finished first.
I wasn’t able to back ALL of Dark Eras Kickstarter, and I wound up choosing the Changeling: the Lost ‘bundle’ option. However, I really, really wanted to get the Promethean one, too. After seeing Second Edition of Promethean: the Lost, I know that *I* am excited to get my hands on this piece of Dark Eras!
So yeah, maybe an odd choice, but it’s one that someone quite loves.
The first picture displays upside down when I click on it. Didn’t think you guys were in Australia.
That’s a special value-added feature. It’s interactive.
With the volume of alcohol consumed at the Grand Masquerade, it certainly felt as if I was upside-down at times…
I think I managed to end up out of date on who was going to be doing the writing for the relaunch of World of Darkness. Early after the buyout, it had seemed like White Wolf Publishing was going to write and publish the new editions with Onyx Path finishing up the 20th anniversary editions and overall creative control over CofD (subject to WWP approvals process.)
I’m guessing that idea came out of rampant speculation because now it seems more like WWP will be providing a roadmap and OP and BNS filling in the details with regards to the future of WoD.
WWP’s plan has always been to create the core document that all licensees can use as their guide to the property. How that is integrated with the creation of a new Vampire 5th Edition is something that continues to evolve. Remember, WWP hasn’t even had the ownership of Vampire for a year yet.
Can’t wait for the Scion Kickstarter! 🙂
With Scion moving into “Redlines,” could we get a review of what that means? I know that Redlines is basically a proofreading phase, but what’s after that?
Redlines are when the developer goes over the first drafts of the book text from the writers and notes where they want changes. Called such because the devs used to use red pens to make their notes on the printed out pages (Justin Achilli was known to give back notes so dense with red comments that they were called “bloody”). After that, the writer does a second draft (that we hope is the final) that incorporates what the developer noted.
I’m giving bloody redlines, even though – no hyperbole – these are the finest first drafts I’ve ever seen.
On my PC, they’re Purplelines.
I need to figure out how to make them red.
When is Vampire the Requiem 2nd edition coming back for sale in hardback?
Yes. We’re working on a database issue where the DTRPG server is arguing with the printer’s server. So, we’re giving them a timeout until they behave.
1) Last week, Rollicking Rose reported that MTAw 2nd was ready to go from indexing to layout. Did that happen, or did something come up to delay it?
2) Seeing that the brood of Beast RMCs is at press inspired me to check on the KS campaign page and see whether my pledge includes it. It does, but the list of included stuff reminds me that I’m not sure as to the status of the Dark Beast Beast chapter. Is that in pre-development, part of the DE Companion, or something I’m not thinking of?
Awakening 2’s index needed some tweaking in the text file. It’s now in my hands and getting dropped in as I prepare the book for print on demand.
Does that mean you’ll be releasing the final download version on DriveThruRPG soon? Maybe this week?
Final PDF will go up shortly before the release of the PoD.
Quick Question (as my memory of the kickstarter is vague at best): do backers who pledged get physical copies of the charm cards? or just the pdfs? Either way i’m stoked beyond words, just curious.
Just the PDF for the Stretch Goal, but backers, like anyone else, can order the physical cards when we get them up for sale on DriveThruCards. Thanks!
We interrupt this MMN to say:
SCION! SCION! SCIOOOON!
Thank you. You may resume MMNing.
Any idea of the timetable on when will Scarred Lands Player’s Guide for 5th Edition be available for purchase?
We have a timetable, yes, but it is our policy not to release our internal estimates and deadlines but to give these weekly Updates on project progress. Thanks!
