Good (Scion) God! [Monday Meeting Notes]

The Scion: God crowdfunding campaign on Backer Kit has entered its last few days!

We are so thrilled by everyone’s response to the campaign, and we’re hoping that nobody has been too confused by it being on the beta-test for Backer Kit‘s crowdfunder. Certainly, it’s doing great, but, y’know, we worry and compare, too. We really just want to be sure that our Scion community is aware of the campaign and everybody gets a chance to participate.

Plus, the more backers backing means that we’ll be creating more Stretch Goal projects in the months to come. Those really help us to include elements for the game and setting that might not quite fit in the main book. Either because of word count or thematically.

So please, here in the last days, if you know anybody who might be interested – let them know about it! They’ll thank you for it – as will we!

If you’re tired of hearing the usual hoopla from me: why, here’s developer Hiromi Cota with some fresh thoughts about Scion: God:

Scion: God takes the Scion experience to the next level, enabling players to explore the pinnacles of power and responsibility. Characters attaining God status have more options than ever. They can create a new Pantheon for their closest friends and allies. They can create (or steal) an Overworld for their new Pantheon, as well as found a religious Creed to shape how their worshippers act down on The World. They can create Incarnations, fragments of their Legend, to tend to their affairs and guide their Scions from children to heroes. With Scion: God, the sky isn’t a limit — it’s just another thing you can shape.

Team Scion has been blown away by the fans’ enthusiasm for our newest game. Even the small updates have gotten been received with massive love and excitement. It’s hard to express just how much it means to us that fans are this enthusiastic and supportive.

We’re nearing the end of this campaign, but there are still a handful of exciting stretch goals that our amazing players can reach. As I’m writing this, we have just unlocked the digital wallpaper and are $4,892 away from an expansion to Divine Inspiration. Divine Inspiration is a toolkit for Storyguides to rapidly build God-tier scenarios and even entire story arcs.

A little past that achievement, we have the fourth expansion to Scion: God Companion, which elaborates on how Dragons and Titanic & Mythos Scions work at God-tier. After our wonderful players unlock this achievement, they’ll be able to make their version of The World stranger and more complicated.

I’m excited to see what our players will do.

And here are a few thoughts from Matthew Dawkins, who has worked on this, and so many of our games:

It’s genuinely difficult to create a game where every character is what could be regarded as “high level” and retain a sense of elegance and balance to the system, let alone keep the game engaging and fun. I’m honestly amazed at how well the team behind Scion: God have managed all these things. This book is worth picking up just to see how masterfully it hits its lofty, godly ambitions.

Speaking of Kickstarters…

Our next one is slated to be for a beautiful Deluxe version Sidereals, for Exalted 3e. This version will go with the Deluxes of the other Exalted 3e “fatsplats” and will be very soon, indeed!

Seriously. Really soon.

We need one more OK from those who give us OK’s, but right now, don’t be surprised if we don’t get this baby out to you live next Tuesday – which is the earliest we can do so. That’s right, about a week from now!

We’re torn between giving a bunch of time to lead up and give folks awareness that it’s coming, and with not having another KS campaign over the holidays. That’s hard on everybody, even our most loyal Exalted fans – there’s just so much stuff going on!

So keep your eyes opened – because we will be yelling about this once we are sure the stars are aligned correctly. 😉

EDIT AND UPDATE: We are going live on Tuesday the 22nd at 2pm Eastern US time! And here’s the pre-launch sign-up page link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/sidereals-charting-fates-course-for-exalted-third-edition

Some Social Media Stuff We Talked About Today

Every week, we put together the Onyx Path Media section of this blog and in the listings for the upcoming Twitch shows that coming week, we also mention that these recordings will be posted on our YouTube channel after their time on our Twitch channel.

Well, hoo-boy is there a motherlode of great vids up on our YouTube channel right now! Everything from Actual Plays, to interviews, to character creation sessions and deep-dives into particular game lines. There’s really something for everybody up there – we’re even hearing that some folks have been inspired to create their own quick takes on our games on TikTok!

You too, can be inspired (although maybe not to jump on camera on TikTok, but maybe that too, why not?), so check out the Onyx Path YouTube channel!

Flip-side of that, our Twitch streams are in a bit of a slow down period with the holidays coming up and folks not wanting to get jammed up, so if you’ve thought about running a game or a series of games, please reach out to us. You can have an established streaming presence, or be totally new, if your idea sounds good to our social media crew, then now’s the time we have slots open!

November = Legendlore

I’ve talked a lot about how cool the character creation (chargen) is for Legendlore all this month, so far, and this Friday you can see it – or at least, hear it – in action on the Onyx Pathcast, as Eddy takes Dixie and Matthew through that very process!

Simply put: chargen is a very rich period during the game – as designed – and the transit from our world to Legendlore‘s fantasy world can really allow player’s to decide not just the details about their characters, but about the nature of the campaign. Well worth taking a listen to hear how the Pathcast Trio do it.

As we’ve done all year, November being the month we celebrate Legendlore means we’re offering celebratory sales on DTRPG and IPR, 90% off for the PDFs and 50% off for the physical copies respectively!

It’s Onyx Path’s 10th Anniversary Celebration, after all!

Anything Else?

Well, really, you folks tell me.

Are you getting the sort of info you want from this blog? It has evolved all through these ten years, and I’m always interested in knowing what works for our community.

Would you like different info, or funnier stories, or more art?

Should I put up more teasers of upcoming game lines and other initiatives or are those too frustrating to see every week while not know what they refer to?

We have a raft of projects that are coming and several big lines that we’ve barely teased, if at all, as well as new versions of our game systems, so I just want to be sure that you’re all good with our transparency and pace as we look into 2023.

That year – it’s coming up fast! Someday, I’ll need to change our weekly tagline…but that day is not today!:

TEN YEARS, MANY WORLDS, ONE PATH!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

He is the night. He is Justice. Let us celebrate the life of the voice of Batman, and the superlative standard that all other versions must be held to – Kevin Conroy, who passed away late last week. By all accounts, the voice actor was not the character he portrayed so perfectly, and Kevin was both approachable and truly enjoyed meeting his fans – truly a role-model!

  1. Hi !
I’m a CofD / WoD fan – and not so interested in the other RPGs you’re developing.
So I like to read about anything concerning that.
I know that you cannot tell much about the communication with Paradox, but probably you could just tell which projects you did pitch, or ideas for books that you internally discussed?
For example I’m a bit sad that there is no Hunter20 – even though there is a Hunter 5th now. I thought that the 20th Aniversery editions were also used as a way to prepare for the 5th editions by Paradox …
Well, whatever you feel safe to share about the WoD/CofD- I like to read.

    Reply
    • I know that it is out of your control, but I second the wish for a Hunter20 as well as a Demon20. I understand that Paradox wants to focus on the new stuff but I would still like to complete my set of 20th Anniversary books. 🙁

      Reply
      • Indeed, it is not our call. Hey, I’m just glad we were able to create and deliver the 20th’s for the original five WoD core games!

        Reply
    • Glad you’re a fan of the WoD/CofD lines! So are we! But I have to ask: what’s stopping you from trying other games? Subject matter? System?

You’re right, too- we can’t talk any more about communication with Paradox. All of that falls under non-disclosure in our license contract. All we can say is that Paradox did not approve any further WoD 20th core books, nor anything further for CofD. At this time. Could change tomorrow, could change in a year, and it might not ever change. The whys and wherefores of their strategies and decisions are up to them to discuss.

      • Hi Rich,
my taste for role playing is pretty refined – after over 30 years of playing.
        – I want deep personal stories with real emotional impact (which makes me prefer the Horror genre of RPGs)
        – I prefer rules light games that move the focus from following rules to experience a story (actually the CofD is already a tad to rules heavy for me nowadays, but I know the rules by heart, so it still is in the comfortable zone for me; the system I currently like most is KULT:DL – and I really hate the D&D rules system)
        – I love the many possibilities for PCs and NPC due to the strong crossover potential in the CofD (and I own every core rulebook there)
-as a GM I created a “CofD sandbox” in Vancouver, and I’ve been playing there for over 15 years, add some new things there is much easier for me than creating a completely new campaign (you know job, kids …)

Still Onyx Path is my most loved RPG publisher – and I rarely play anything not created by you…

Your fan since Vampire 2nd Ed.
        Ferdinand

        • Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Seems like if modern horror is your thing, and simple dice pool rules, I think you’re going to like some news we’ll be putting out next year-

          • Now you really spiked my interesst !
I am really looking forward to a time when my favorite publisher will provide more RPGs that are fitting to my personal taste !

  2. I know my opinion probably doesn’t count for much, but I for one vote for waiting on Sidereals until after the holidays. PLEASE, my wallet can only take so much of a beating.

  3. Since my birthday is on the 26th of December a Sids KS shortly before would be a very nice gift.

…I doubt that’ll affect anything but I’d put me in such a good move going the new year.

  4. I paused to think if I could provide some feedback on the Monday Meeting Blog; and I don’t have anything specific to tell you. That said, this might be worth knowing. Monday Meeting Notes is my primary, and often only source of information about Onyx Path games and media. I have become disenchanted with social media platforms, and I generally only hit forums and Discord channels when I have a specific need or specific question. Those places are not hangouts for me. They’re not doing anything wrong, I’m just not personally tied into the community. So I hit them up when I have specific needs.

But I always know I can come here, every Monday, and get the skinny on what the company is doing. Even if it’s just a link to another blog entry like the monthly publication recap. But Kickstarters, new games, new products… I get all that news here. I may not even read it on Monday, but if I wake up in the middle of the night during the week and want to look at something on my iPad, I come here for the latest news.

I think more art and fun stories are great things. Go for it! Just don’t lose sight of what you do best with this blog- in my opinion anyway. For me, it’s your best, well known, consistent platform for promoting your products.

    Reply
    • Exactly my opinion!
Please continue the MM Notes ! I also don’t use any social media/Discord, so reading the news in here is always a great start for the Tuesday (here in Germany).

    • You can see it in progress on the monthly progress report linked in this very blog post you’re commenting on. Not the weekly, but the linked October monthly. Hope that helps!

  5. Any chance for preorders to be turned on for the God campaign? I missed the close by a day or two but would love to kick some cash over.

    • Of course we will once James works through the next steps with BackerKit. Remember, this is our first time with their crowdfunding site and it’s still in beta. Once he has all the connections made from the crowdfunding campaign to post-campaign, we’ll have options for folks who missed the campaign itself. Thanks!

        • It’s all up to Paradox, the IP owners. We operate on a license to do TTRPG books, but they have to OK them before we can start making them. Unless they do, we aren’t legally able to just jump in and create something. Fortunately, we’re still doing some great CofD projects that are still coming out, but some lines can’t move forward without an OK from Paradox.
