Nice piece of fiction! However, I’m not sure the narrator has actual ground to state:
“If they can manipulate people like that, turn what people know on and off, no wonder they’ve remained hidden for so long.”
I mean, he has no way to know how long they’ve been there, or at least he hasn’t told his friend how or why he knows. So I guess it could be more like:
“If they can manipulate people like that, turn what people know on and off, I wonder how long they’ve remained hidden out there.”
…Or else maybe a sentence or two could be added hinting that he also found additional evidence that, while sketchy, nevertheless pointed to those things being part of our world since “at least “.
