Let’s Look Back at the Lore of the Clans Kickstarter [Monday Meeting Notes]

lotc deluxe

First off and fair warning: Fast Eddy Webb will be filling in for me next week here at the MMN blog with what will, no doubt, be a funnier, pithier, and muuuuch better written post than I usually can fumble through. I will be at Disney World forcing people to be photographed wearing World of Darkness T-shirts (see Kickstarter Achievement notes below).

Today, we talked a lot about the just finished this weekend Deluxe V20 Lore of the Clans Kickstarter. Proposed cover of the book pictured above. I’ve often said that each Kickstarter is different, and that each, for us, is an experiment. So it is standard procedure for the Onyx Path team to get together and share our thoughts on what worked and what didn’t. Some might call this process a post-mortem, but for me that implies a finished process. And I don’t think of our Kickstarters as being finished in any way just because we hit the funding date. But it is definitely a snapshot review of what we know, what we experienced during, and what we can improve on for the next one.

Naturally, because it is sort of the point as to why we use Kickstarter, we first talked over both the amount we were funded and the number of backers. We were pretty happy about both. Impish Ian had let us know during the KS that Lore of the Clans had become our top-funded V20 Kickstarter besides Deluxe V20 Dark Ages, which is pretty impressive for a Deluxe version of a supplement. Right now, I look at the Deluxe W20 Changing Breeds Kickstarter as the benchmark for supplement KS’s; for number of backers, amount raised, and the amount of community excitement (more on that part in a second). Lore of the Clans did very well in those areas.

We used only the tools provided for us by Kickstarter as well as our social media and some banner ads, even though I was bombarded by no doubt well-meaning representatives of companies interested in helping us with their marketing connections. Maybe next time we’ll explore their offerings, but this time we needed to see how well V20‘s look at the Clans would do compared to Deluxe V20 Companion, Deluxe V20 Children of the Revolution, Deluxe Hunters Hunted II, and Deluxe V20 Anarchs Unbound. It did very well, as stated above, and a lot of that we chalk up to the more universally usable and desired subject matter.

Other areas we reviewed:

Overall activity/posts: Steady, with the expected busiest times in the first and last few days. Nowhere near as energized as the posting during W20 Changing Breeds, though. Some folks mentioned that they felt the Clans were not as interesting as the Bloodlines as there were already a good number of books about the Clans. So the V20 philosophy of polishing up the favorites might not provide many surprises? Also, Eddy had previewed a fair amount of the writing, so perhaps the discussions occurred during the Open Dev Process and most folks had had their say? Or, as we discussed, it might just be that Eddy’s team had written such awesome text that folks were just happy with the material and had no need to argue, etc. 🙂

Developer Updates: We try to use our Developer Updates in all of our Kickstarters as a regular ongoing core of information that we get out to backers – and those just checking out the Updates. This was one of our most successfully regular series of updates, but again, not much commented on. In this case, though, we feel more like our audio delivery method for the info was more the issue. We thought it would be a fun new way for folks to enjoy the updates. Actually, we think that it was a harder way to get them than just text, and not as compelling as video would have been. So, unless we hear a huge chorus to the contrary from the backers, we’ll be going back to written until we can try out video in one of our upcoming KSs.

Posting attitudes: The above being said, the general tone of comments was really positive. Brand new backers were assisted by the comments community really well. Maybe not a big deal to most of you, but not only does how folks are posting make a huge difference for us in how we enjoy the Kickstarter, but it also indicates to me that we have an experienced core group of Kickstarter patrons that know and generally like what we do. Thanks, if you are one of them!

Rewards: We pretty much offered our standard set of Reward Tiers, with a couple of tweaks like the signed picture of Eddy’s Pug. Here we noticed a lot of interesting info, so this part might get long. There was little interest in the “upper level” Reward Tiers, although enough to be glad we included them. At this point after four previous V20 KSs, we figure folks might just not need to be an artist’s model again, as one example. Also, after a couple of other chances to get what is essentially the same Storyteller’s info on the Screens, we saw a huge drop in the pledges for them. We do always change the art side, but I can totally see why folks might not be as into the Screens yet another time around. We’re looking at other options with the Screens.

But the most interesting positive change for me was the large number of Retailer Reward Tiers that were pledged for. That’s fantastic and I hope a sign of good things for our community that wants to support their Friendly Local Game Store. We’re very glad that more retailers pledged this time. Thanks!

Stretchgoals: Like most of our Kickstarters for Deluxe supplement books, this one stayed focused on two areas: adding a bit to the book itself that it did not previously have the budget for, and creating a new project that we probably would not have gotten to for years, if at all. In this case, that was a V20 Lore of the Bloodlines companion volume for V20 Lore of the Clans Not a deluxe, but a book we probably would not have done at all. Although, the sheer enthusiasm for this Bloodlines project has made us think more about them as a viable subject for further books. Both the required amounts for each Stretch Goal as well as the time it took to hit them seemed to hit the sweet spot of appearing worth striving for, but not taking weeks to achieve.

The Stretch Goals were being rolled through with great momentum until we were hit by a scam artist that Kickstarter flagged, losing us $10,000.00 in one fell, but ultimately necessary, swoop. That seemed to pull the wind from everybody’s sails for a couple of days, but momentum kicked up again and we ended strong. Lesson learned? We’re going to ask Kickstarter if they could implement pledge caps that creators could set. Also, our backer community is great and can get re-energized even after that sort of downturn.

Achievements: Last but not least, our newest addition to our Kickstarter bag of tricks was adding in Achievements. I “adopted” this idea from a couple of other KSs because I really liked that it provides an additional way to enjoy and engage with the Kickstarter activities. Some backers are into the Kickstarter Rewards themselves, some into the Stretch Goals and the excitement of unlocking more stuff, and there is another kind of backer that wants to participate. Which is where the Achievements come in. Plus, from my point of view, I like adding a reward or two that isn’t tied to the pledge amount going up.

Well, we had around 250 pics sent in, with a fair number of them coming in during the last couple of days. Every Clan-based Achievement attained at least the first level, and a couple hit the second. We got an upsurge in Likes on FB and followers on Twitter, and even though we didn’t get many, if at all, shots of folks wearing WoD shirts at Disney World, most of the other categories had entries. Great work! We adjusted the number of entries needed during the KS, because even then we realized we had way overestimated the number of entries, and will plan to reduce our expectations further come the next KS with Achievements.

As for what worked, the postings added a level of conversation to the KS comments, and we really liked that. We plan on getting those pics out on our social media A LOT mroe than this time, as we think more folks would have posted if they’d seen what other backers were accomplishing. Some of those pics were very well shot and moody. So a successful experiment that we can revise and evolve and use again.

And that’s the look back from us.

  1. Beast out of editing already? That was fast… Any kind of timetable on Werewolf 2nd Condition cards and GM Screen? There’s a whole lot of new conditions and modifiers to keep track of. Also, glad to see Book of the Deceived getting some recognition. It’s like 4 or 5 different kinds of awesome.

  2. Ow, Secrets of the Covenants jumped form First Drafts directly to Second Drafts, that’s nice! Can’t wait to buy and read it, if it’s anything like the Clanbooks it will be a very amazing read!

    No, I do not care.

  5. I didn’t listen to any of the audio commentary in the Lore of the Clans Kickstarter, but it wasn’t due to lack of interest. I couldn’t get the audio to play on my computer.

I’m incredibly excited about the Lore of the Bloodlines stretch goal! It got through enough of the stretch goals to be a really comprehensive look at V:tM’s bloodlines, most of which have never had much more than the two page spread!

    Reply
    • As Eddy mentioned in the comments, I think, we’re looking at each Bloodline write-up being roughly half of a Clan write-up from LotC. So, certainly more than a two page spread, but not like a whole Clan.

      Reply
      • Certainly, bloodlines really shouldn’t have the spotlight that the clans have, but it’s still exciting to have a closer look at stuff that’s never had much examination past the standard two page spread.

        Reply
        • I agree. The material on the clans was top notch, but detailed info on bloddlines is very uncharted territory so I guess that’s why it got people so excited about them.

  6. Hey Rich, what do you think of Pug, and will it have different breeds of our canine and feline companions in it, as for Dog Royalty it wouldn’t be a Pug, but more like a Poodle or a Boxer me thinks with a German Shepard in the role of guard dog and a breed like say a Lab as a sheriff or such as they make good watch dogs. Though with that being said, I am excited for it and me thinks that the fish species would have a similar outlook along with the reptiles and birds to that of the Cats, the man is a beloved servant type of role.

    Reply
    • Pugmire will have different breeds of dogs fulfilling different roles within the society the dogs have created. Cats will make an appearance, but our plans are for them to get their own game if Pugmire does well. Almost any dog breed could be rulers of a different state; we chose to focus on Pugs and the realm they rule. We haven’t discussed whether fish have been uplifted at all yet. 🙂

  7. Unfortunately I couldn’t pledge this time, so thank you to everybody who did. Getting the True Brujah into the Bloodlines book made my weekend. I can’t wait to hear them tell their story.

I actually really liked Eddy’s 5 min. commentaries on the clans, but the whole not being able to pledge thing meant I couldn’t comment on the KS. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on the defining characteristics of each clan and how some of the newer visions for them came to be. I’d love it if he could record more 5 min. commentaries for the Bloodlines when that book nears completion.

Hope to have my PoD copy of Forsaken 2e by the end of the week, so that should be awesome. Glad to see Avarice is able to move along now, plus both Demon books advancing is great news. Just a little more proofing Phil, you’re almost there!

  8. Hey! Just wanted to thank both my fellow backers and the developers of Lore of the Clans. It was a great kickstarter, but as Richt noted in this blog some new, higher pledge tiers might be needed to attract people to pledge at that level. Otherwise I think we did a great job at hitting those stretchgoals and unlocking Lore of the Bloodlines with , what was it.., 9 different blodlines?

I personally would gladly pay for a really thick deluxe edition of a “Lore of the Bloodlines” type of Book, which could include things such as History, Lore, Mechanics – New Merits/Flaws, New discipline levels, combination disciplines, sorcery and more, in a similar fashion to Lore of the Clans.

I am also really happy that this kickstarter proved that theres a huge interest in the different Bloodlines and that Richt noted in the blog that they might get some more focus in potential upcoming products.

As a final note Im also interested in which kickstarter is up next. Will it be a CWoD or NWoD line? Or something completely different? Just curious 🙂

    • Another way to generate more funds to Lore of the Clans and any future KS’s is to add more Add-on’s or Reward Tiers related to the project.

For example, I didn’t see a single option to add the V20 core book or any of the already produced supplements as Add-on’s or in the Tiers. Although I (and probably most other backers) own the core V20 book; perhaps new players that learned of this KS through Social Media don’t. They may have passed on backing because they couldn’t get the core book along with the new supplement.

I for one, just got my V20 core book after supporting the Wraith20 KS (which offered all the 20’s as a Tier) so I missed the other KS’s for V20 products. I would have upped my pledge if I could have added on the earlier supplements that I missed out on. That could have bumped my single pledge from $30 to over $100.

  9. Just wondering if Rich and Eddy have any plans for the Bloodlines and clan variations that didn’t make it into LotB. While i appriciate those Bloodlines that did make it into LotB i don’t think it is fair for the other Bloodlines to be excluded just because the kickstarter didn’t make enough money, it wasn’t realistic to begin with that we would hit enough strechgoals to include every Bloodline, clan variation and Antitribu there is. So when will the other get the same treatment?

    Reply
    • Sorry, where did we say that our plans were to include “every Bloodline, clan variation and Antitribu there is” in the book? That was never our intention. What was our intention, and as I mentioned above, was to use the Stretch Goal set up to bring together a set of Bloodlines that otherwise would never have been given further write-ups than what was in V20. Now that we know there is interest, yes we are looking at other possibilities.

      Reply
      • I’m sorry. I never said that you guys said that.
I just feel that it is unfair to the other Bloodlines etc (and their fans) not to be included in this book, and (and this could just be a fear of mine) never get the same treatment just because they didn’t make it as a strechgoal.

I, and i’m sure alot of the other fans, would gladly buy a supplement that details the rest of the bloodlines. A LotB 2.0 if you will.

  10. About the activity and post: my case.

I commented and discussed much in the Open Development process. When the preview PDF was released, I was pleasantly suprised to see how much fan input had its way to the text.

So, yes, the main reason for me is that all work was done and everything was alright.

  11. For what it’s worth, I’d just like to say that I actually really like the screens as backer rewards. I’m fairly new to the World of Darkness, my group just started playing a few months ago but it has quickly leapt up as one of our all-time favorites. The screen was my main impetus for pledging at the $70 level as it seems like the KS are the only ways to get them.

If you are looking to do something different with the screens, may I put forth the suggestion of a landscape-orientation screen? I’d be willing to throw another 70 for one of those in a future KS.

I could be in the minority, but I actually preferred the audio comments. Video’s get in your face and usually come of as boring (even if the discussion is not), and long commentaries in text tend to lose the personal touch.
When it comes to non-monetary activities during a KS I think the voting frenzy of the Dark Eras KS was the most engaging so far. But there has to be something relevant to poll about… Eras was unusally good for that, but I’ld like if it can be used in some future KS.

    • it would have been a good option to make polls about which bloodline the next stretch goal should be about.

  15. I actually really liked the audio developer commentary. It was an easy way to consume the information without reading through a really long update. I thought the music was great and it was fun to hear the voice of the dev as well as get tone that can be lost in text. I hope that I’m not the only one that feels this way and that they don’t disappear.

I thought the idea of picture achievements was a super fun idea, but from an community engagement aspect I didn’t feel super engaged. In the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t contribute any pictures, but I also didn’t feel like there was a lot going on. Maybe it was an update that I just missed, but I didn’t know how to find out where we stood on achievements until we got alerted from the updates and I didn’t know how to view the pictures that had been submitted and accepted by you guys. I was looking forward to that, but wasn’t quite sure where they would be. I’m guessing that maybe you guys put them on facebook? I don’t really use facebook or twitter though. Mainly I interface with Onyx via this site or KS updates.

If it’s helpful my assumption when I first read about the achievements was that they would be displayed on the website somewhere as they came in and where approved. And that we’d get a link to where they were in the KS updates.

That being said, the KS was still super fun and I still really enjoyed it. You guys are doing a bang up job. 🙂

  16. First off, I love the kickstarters you guys put out. They are engaging, and whenever an old one finishes, I begin looking forward to the next one.

As far as the audio logs, I really enjoyed them. I often listened to them in my car on the way home from work between episodes of the History of Byzantium podcast. I’ve begun hunting down V:tM and V:tDA podcasts as a result :).

The Lore of the Bloodlines achievements were some of the most exciting aspects of this kickstarter. I’ve always itched for more info on the lesser known quirks of Caine’s curse, and I know these new spreads will add a great deal to my games. I realize that you guys have a lot on your plate and that this isn’t in the picture for the near future, but I would definitely go for a Bloodlines Codex detailing each of the bloodlines in depth.

PS. Do stretch goals like the V20 DA Tome of Secrets make it to the Development Status list? I’m relatively new to the party so I’m just curious.

  17. Can’t wait to get my physical copy of Werewolf 2nd Edition; our Saturday group just wrapped the short adventure we’d been running with the PDF in favor of preparing for our long term chronicle once we have the book in hand.

There’s just so much cool stuff coming out!

Once our Vampire 2nd Edition game wraps in a few more weeks than we’re gonna run a general WoD game to help prepare for the coming of Mage 2nd Edition. The plan is to teach the players how to be Mages by teaching their characters during the course of the game; tried this before with a totally fresh group of players and got a pretty good response.

The “How Do You Do That” (HDYDT?) book for Mage 20 will probably be invaluable for the same purposes when we play Mage20. Speak of which: keep up the proffing Phil! I believe in you!

  18. FYI On where M20 is at: Satyros Phil Brucato I am 16 pages from done with the redlining, and then need to input corrections for Chapters 1-5 and the two Appendices. Then it goes back to Mike, probably Wednesday or Thursday. He gets his time with it, and then…” he is also waiting to be finished with M20 before he starts on the ST Screen for obvious reasons..

  19. and FTGM, on the FB MtA page people have been having some success using the m20 quickstart, as it for players new to mage is easier to digest than revised or second edition. You could however start off with the QS and ease them into it once they have gotten their foot in the door or go what the hell and throw them all in the deep end..

Do you still expect Origins to be out this year with the game system still being In Development? Also since I’m not clear on it is Origins and Hero coming out together or is Hero slated to be out later?

  21. Exactly what is going to be for each bloodline.
Is it just going to be more background or will there be Merits/Flaws, new Discipline powers and other rules.

    Reply
    • The bloodline chapters will be about half the length of the Clan chapters, but they will have roughly the same proportions: a third historical information, a third modern lord, and a third mechanics bits. That might flow a little in each direction due to the smaller size, but there will be mechanical bits.

  22. Hi, i want to give my opinion on audio commentaries.
I’m not an English speaker, I can read, write it, and speak it in a clumpsy way, but I cannot follow an audio commentary. I cannot speak for a lot of non-English speaker Wed fans, but I know some people that, like me, haven’t listen those audios. I used to be really interested in that kind of info, but this time it was a little complicated for me.

I’ve doubted if participate in that KS or wait for a normal PoD, and I’ve chosen the second option. I don’t know, maybe if the comments would have been written I’d had been more interested in the book.

Thank for all your efforts anyway. Glad to be part of that community.

  25. About the audio commentary.

I read these posts, as well as backer updates, when I have the time usually while either doing something else at the same time, there just aren’t enough hours in a day you know, so I really had no opportunity to take tome to listen to them at all. I can read even a longer text easily in small measures stealing a moment here and there and continuing where I last left of but with the audio this isn’t really possible.

So while they might have been informative and even entertaining I had no opportunity to listen to them at all so all such updates kinda flew past me.

Due to these reasons I would far prefer the updates to be in writing, I would have similar problem with a video after all not having time or opportunity to watch it in peace.

  26. Hi Rich

I really enjoyed seeing all of the Bloodlines that are getting covered due to the kickstarter, it will make a great companion book for Lore of the Clans. If you guys feel like making an exclusive Lore of the Bloodlines t-shirt available to go with the Lore of the Clans shirt I wouldn’t complain about that at all. I’m not asking for it to be discounted like the Clans shirt, just to be made available. It’s just a thought, it’s nice seeing the Bloodlines getting some extra attention.

  27. Hi Rich / Eddy,
I’m trying to set my internal calendar w/r/t Lore of the Bloodlines, which is why I backed the LotC KS TBH. WHile it would be great to see it released simultaneously, am I far off in expecting a lag of three or four months between the LotC release and the LotB release given that it is an entirely new book that has to be developed from scratch?

    • I’m not anyone who works for Onyx Path, but I think you’re being awfully optimistic in your Lore of the Bloodlines time frame. Lore of the Clans (except for the appendices added by Kickstarter) is in its second proof now. Lore of the Bloodlines doesn’t even have an outline yet.

I highly recommend not worrying about a release date for it. Sit back, relax, play awesome games, and before you know it, you’ll have a cool surprise waiting for you in your inbox.

  28. For me I really enjoyed the 5 minute audio pieces – they personalised and explained the thought process behind the change process. I might not have necessarily liked all the changes or comments but I understood the reasoning. Just reading it would have been bland.

I picked the $250 tier and added the screen. However, quite a few of the higher ones felt they were missing elements I expected to see. For example, an earlier tier included all the extra PDF’s but the more expensive included none of them – very odd. I’d have happily bought a higher tier including those as well but somehow the necessity of adding everything on top put me off as I had all the original sourcebooks and novels anyway. It felt a bit like being nickel and dimed which is weird in a kick starter! The other obvious omission were the previous V20 books as this is the first one I’ve bought in this series having stopped at Requiem. I’d have snapped up the option of picking up everything.

One oddity is the open review process that kept being referenced – a link to it would have been appreciated.

The achievements side left me totally cold – I understand how some people could have got excited but for me it didn’t do much as an older gamer. Perhaps a linked gallery so we could see the photo’s as they were submitted? That would give it a more communal feeling.

  29. Thank you for the Monday Meeting updates. It keeps me sane knowing the Kickstarters I have pledged are moving forward. Additionally, it is great to see other projects that are in development which I may have missed.
    Keep up the great work.

  30. >.> remind me to double check which monday meeting i post in. i accidently posted this on last weeks. x) oops.

maybe I should put this up as a thread instead =/ but im curious internet: what led up to your first experience with WoD/exalted/scion/trinity/other WW/OP game line.

    for me:
exalted: was in the 2nd anime club in high school (the first one flopped due to problems w/ soda spills) saw guy from my first period. cue talk about anime and later favorite games. one day he brings in the 2e core and shows me it when our teacher let us do whatever we chose to do. that was roughly early 2012 =)

VTM: again in high school. tried to set up a trading card game/Tabletop game club. was asking around, met latin teacher and we started to talk about games we enjoyed. she then off handedly mentioned something like D&D where you played as vampires. 4 months later I get bored w/ neverwinter nights and decide to look into another rpg that could run on a crappy pc. found bloodlines (someone should make a sequel, one w/ access to all the clans instead of just the camarilla), then I realized the licenser was also the same company that made exalted. been a fan of vtm ever since (at least from a distance. q.q no one in city plays it from what I can tell).

so what about you internet? any more interesting stories about how you came across your favorite WW/OP products?
